- Did you know Congress has to review and approve all DC laws before they can go into effect? And, they can modify or even overturn such legislation.
Even though D.C. residents elect 13 members of their city council, they have no say over any action taken by Congress. This is all while D.C. residents pay more federal taxes per capita than any state.
On Wednesday, February 9th, 2023, Republicans brought two resolutions to the House Floor that would overturn two local D.C. laws. One would give D.C. residents voting representation in Congress, and the other would give them full control over their local affairs.
Rep. AOC responded to this, saying, “The D.C. City Council has the right to determine its policies for D.C. residents. And if any member of this body does not like that, they can feel free to change their registration, resign their post and run for D.C. City Council.”

DC statehood used to be a bipartisan issue. Jack Kemp ( Bob Dole’s running mate in 1996) was a staunch supporter of DC voting rights. Of course lots of things were once bipartisan, like climate change. Nixon started the EPA and HW signed the Clean Water and Air acts. Reagan wasn’t great on environmental issues but enough Democrats and moderate Republicans kept it from being a disaster. Reagan did have a pretty good environmental record as Gov of CA. However like many people in politics that was most likely political posturing. He was trying to appeal to his constituents. Back then even those conservatives in Orange County wanted to keep the coastline clean and beautiful.

Do you know that the Constitution says you are wrong?
Guam, District of columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Mariana Islands, and US virgin Islands. All have non-voting members but are considered US territories. Taxation without representation is alive and well in the US. Many of these places have larger populations than some actual states. I wish every die-hard republican would move to these places to enjoy the same rights as they inflict on others. Every time I hear some Republican talk about Freedom or what the US represents I cringe. It's just like when all those pro-slavery A-holes wish for the "Good ol days" but not one of them is willing to put on a collar. I wish a hyprocrisy law was in place.

Maybe it's time for a constitutional amendment to restructure state representation in Congress as well as add DC and Puerto Rico as states. Looking at wikipedia, there are 56 states and territories. Puerto Rico ranks 31st in population while DC ranks 50th, ahead of Vermont and Wyoming plus several territories. There's about 10M people in LA county/city which is as much as states #42-#56 yet California only gets 2 senators while these other states (territories and DC get nothing) two each so twenty senators total. Equal representation? Nope. Wyoming only has 580K people. There are six cities in California with more people than the entire state of Wyoming. There are 76 cities in CA with a population over 100K. It's time to reorganize how the Congress is structured to make sure people are evenly represented. Right now, states with small populations get more representation. I don't care how many square miles a state has, it's the people who count and we are all Americans (except for guests), weren't not Californians, Alaskans, or of any state. Check your passport. It lists the state it was issued in but doesn't necessarily include where you currently live. It's time we act as a country.
