As a British Citizen, watching this in the UK. This absolute SUPERSTAR LADY gives me some hope that the the problems in the US (which are huge) can be addressed. Personally I think that Citizens United is a load of b*llocks and the root cause of most of the problems in the US and it affects us in the UK as well.
I am and always will be a huge fan of AOC, she is genuine and it is a shame that so many people in the red states do not see how much she is fighting for them.

The people in the red states have been brainwashed (through the media) and marginalized so thoroughly over decades and decades that the amount of damage done by the right-wing Republicans is probably incalculable. The only way they will be able to see different is if the federal government actually serves them and helps them to get through life.
The root cause of just about every problem in this country is because of corporate and wealthy donor money flooding every level of government here- and this has been happening since way before Citizens United. Every Republican politician and nearly every Democratic politician in Washington D.C. and all 50 state capitals takes "donations" (which are actually bribes) through PACs and lobbies that represent and are funded by corporations and wealthy donors. Citizens United is basically just a form of protection for the plethora of corrupt, bribe taking politicians in this country. Citizens United was the worst thing to happen to this country since W. Bush was illegitimately elected through cheating and Fox News's public manipulation.
AOC is one of the rare federal politicians who does not take corporate PAC money. There are 5 other House members out of 435 who do not take corporate PAC money. All 430 of the others do.
We are the only developed country in the world that doesn't have something like the NHS. Nor do we have free college, nor are we investing in alternative forms of energy like we should be doing. People don't realize how totally messed up things are here. I'm honestly surprised we haven't gone down the road South Africa has and devolved into a third-world country.

She can get facts wrong, she can missspeak at times. Just see her as a good example but she is far from perfect and needs to be overseen by the people like every other politician. Not being a radical autocrat doesn't make her the 'TRUTH' but a decent' politician.
What I like about AOC is that she explains the stakes in a way that everyone can understand. Great communicator!

The Constitution does not give the right to abortion. It is up to Congress to amend it into the Constitution to make it a right. All rights not enumerated in the Constitution belong to the States. The Supreme Court did not make abortion illegal, certain States did. Why doesn't AOC start the process of ratifying the Constitution if she wants the right so bad?

If someone asks why should they vote, then I am going to give you another good reason why. Only a FRACTION OF CASES are taken by SUPREME COURT most cases are handled by DISTRICT COURTS and CIRCUIT COURTS who's judges are appointed by president and approved by senate. After 2014 elections GOP CONTROLLED SENATE blocked all of Obama's nominees (like 100 or more) for these courts and after 2016 election when GOP WON PRESIDENCY, HOUSE AND SENATE TRUMP APPOINTED all the JUSTICES which were left unfilled by Obama. Which made Trump the President who have appointed MOST JUSTICES for ONE TERM PRESIDENT who didn't even win the POPULAR VOTE. He appointed a LAWYER for OIL EXECUTIVE who QUESTIONS CLIMATE CHANGE to California's circuit court. So vote if you want to get the court you want and now Americans know how powerful the courts are, so if you loose the courts you have lost power for a generation. So GO OUT and FUCKING VOTE!!
Well, I'm cautious about thinking the vote is the end all to be all, especially when Republicans have only won ONE popular presidential vote since the 1980s (W Bush's 2nd term after war fervor, 9-11 and an election recount hanging chads debacle in Florida where his brother was Governor).
But yeah, Trump loaded district and circuit courts with his judges. He also appointed Scott Pruitt (a big oil and Koch brothers dude) as head of the EPA.
@@whatabouttheearth Well I am from a state and a district where my vote counts a little and didn't make any meaningful diffrence (until 2020) but I have always voted for the candidates no matter how evil or imperfect the they are (since I turned 18 and now I am 22), all the way from federal, state, local, Judicial and law enforcement. I just don't want to regret not voting and staying home when I get to know that I could have made an election turn other way.

I don't think the court is technically delegit. Roe v wade was not a law. Abortion rights are not in the constitution. So aoc is wrong. Sure she sounds good with all her historical flourishes but what is said also needs to be accurate. Sounding intelligent is not good enough.

The judicial branch's role is to enforce existing law not write new ones. It should not be up to the Supreme Court to grant civil rights that are not already baked into the Constitution. The Dred Scott case happened 4 years before Lincoln became president. He did not issue the Emancipation Proclamation in response to Dred Scott. He issued it 2 years after becoming president and 6 years after Dredd Scott. AOC just went on Colbert and said a bunch of Civil War era words together.

Its quite shocking and depressing to read comments calling AOC when she doesn't know what she's talking about with the civil war history. Confederates never took over the supreme court, they never were in the supreme court because the Confederates were not in the US government at all, they formed their own government. Yes there were democrats in the Supreme court who were pro slavery and sympathetic to the south but they were not confederates as that did not exist yet. The Dred Scott case was in 1857, 4 years before Lincoln became president. The Dred Scott decision basically stated that Slaves are property and the US government has no right to prevent you from transporting property that is legally yours across state borders. The supreme court never impeded Lincoln, there was nothing they did that hindered him and at times Lincoln acted as a dictator actually suspending Habeas Corpus, locking up people without a trial completely bypassing the court systems. AOC knows nothing and hte people in the comments simping for her also know nothing.

You need to learn more about American history and civics. Before you do that, however, you should go back to second grade and master basic grammar and punctuation: 1) “clear headed” is not hyphenated and 2) we’re not rationing commas; learn how to use them. That’s just for starters.

Its quite shocking and depressing to read comments calling AOC when she doesn't know what she's talking about with the civil war history. Confederates never took over the supreme court, they never were in the supreme court because the Confederates were not in the US government at all, they formed their own government. Yes there were democrats in the Supreme court who were pro slavery and sympathetic to the south but they were not confederates as that did not exist yet. The Dred Scott case was in 1857, 4 years before Lincoln became president. The Dred Scott decision basically stated that Slaves are property and the US government has no right to prevent you from transporting property that is legally yours across state borders. The supreme court never impeded Lincoln, there was nothing they did that hindered him and at times Lincoln acted as a dictator actually suspending Habeas Corpus, locking up people without a trial completely bypassing the court systems. AOC knows nothing and hte people in the comments simping for her also know nothing.

Are you against the usage of narcotics like cocaine, heroine, and meth? Do you think you should need a prescription to buy drugs at the pharmacy? I'm tired of hearing you people say "Old men" or even "old white men", like 40% of politicians are women, and there are just as many pro life women as there are pro choice men. This isn't a gender issue, there aren't men out there who are thinking "How can I put as much control as possible on women's body, I like controlling them", people are pro life because they believe the unborn are human beings with a right to life not because they want to oppress you. Not everything is about gender and race.

When the Americans brought democracy to us Germans, we had the following law: Our Constitutional Court (16 judges) is elected half by the Senate and half by the House. With a 2/3 majority and limited to a maximum of 12 years per judge. The Constitutional Court deals only with applications and not of its own accord.
Maybe you Germans can give us back some democracy, we seem to have misplaced it.

I would make the term 20 years maximum were we to adopt that, as otherwise you would have Biden getting 9 vacancies to fill. And I would have the gang of eight make suggestions and recommendations to the president, say five from the minority party and five from the majority party for the original pool. Then the president whittles that down to a short list which will have three names and must contain one from the minority five. Then the Senate Judiciary Committee gets to meet with all three finalists, and they submit to the president a ranked choice listing of the three. The president then considers those recommendations and makes a determination based, in whatever manner he deems proper, upon those suggestions. Then the selected name goes before the floor of the Senate for a floor vote. In this manner you have included advise and consent of both parties, you have eliminated the partisan backbiting, and you have made the process a more inclusive and reasonable process. Of course the Republicans would never go for it because Democrats would have some say in the process, and they ultimately want to codify a 9-0 advantage on the Court. Were that 20 year limit I suggested be enacted, both Thomas and Alito would already be timed out. They would have to step down by year's end. Moscow Mitch would not be able to do anything to stop that. Suddenly the court shifts to a 5-4 Democratic majority with Roberts as Chief. I believe either Roberts or Kagan would be next. Or would Sotomayor come up next? Regardless, Biden fills those three as well, including picking the next Chief Justice. That would be a 6-3 Democratic majority and six Justices selected by Biden with three selected by Donnie Dimwit. Therein lies the problem. See, that would create too much overbalance on the party in power, and might tend to exacerbate the current problem. I think that each President should be reflected in the Court of his times. Even Ford got a nomination. The only president without a nomination to the Court was Carter. There should be one nomination offered every two years by the sitting president. That means that each president will get to name two per term, assuming that an opening exists based on the 20 year rule, but he or she will get at least one per term. This maintains a continuity of law, but acts to distribute the Judiciary across the spectrum, thus giving voice to all views, not the minority or majority view alone. This would make it more reflective of the will of the people. And in an aside in closing, I also believe that the electoral college, whose reasons for initial inclusion by the Founding Fathers no longer apply, should be discarded, or at the least modified to a more model more reflective of the will of the people. The loser of the popular vote should not be made president, ever. And I would say the same if it were a Democrat who won the EC but lost the people's vote. But, see, Democrats don't cheat like that, only Republicans have ever "won" that way. Only once, dating back 30 years, has a Republican won the popular vote, and that was in the Dubya reelection bid when they swiftboated John Kerry, an actual war hero, with a guy that really avoided serving the real army by hiding in a National Guard unit that has never left US continental land, and likely never will. That is the one all the corporate or political kids sign up for when they want to "serve" but don't want to go anywhere dangerous.

So what? That’s not how our court system works. The Supreme Court is not a political body. It is supposed to be removed from politics so that it can render opinions on the constitutionality of issues without influence from the other branches of government or the public. It’s exists to prevent the interpretation of our Constitution from being controlled by mob rule.
