    He's not kidding about taking your props off for this. I have neat looking tiger stripe scars on my back from leaving my props on. I also have 4 lock-nut shaped holes in my ceiling in a perfect square.

      I forced my quad down while I was dong it, but it never tried taking off...

      i thought prop nut holes in the ceiling came standard with the fpv surname ?

      I did the same but as I went to unplug the battery my pinky was just a little bit too close to a prop and just like that there was blood all over my room. I beg you to not be as stupid as me.
      Ps. All my throttle values was at 0. You can not trust your quad to be idle during an ESC calibration.

      I dismounted all props, and it payed off! During receiver configuration after a few minutes of playing with the little simulation, suddenly the motors started to execute my controls. They went wild, so I had to unplug the battery. When I plugged in again, same thing happened after a few minutes.
      That was the first time I realized taking off props is not a joke. Kinda shocked, because I never took it seriously before

    Josh. i have been stuck for 2 weeks trying to find out why every quad i touch stops arming the motors. After scouring for an answer, and becoming frustrated regularly, you my friend, have solved this issue for me. Thank you so much, and your delivery was exceptional. 10/10 Video/deliverance

    I have been building quads for a couple years now so I have built a couple and have watched more how to videos than I can remember and this video by far is THE MOST thorough, complete video that I have watched. Thank you for posting it. Very Helpful!!

  • @Newtsche

    As a noob, I can't imagine how long it would have taken me to ferret all this out from the world of internet sources. It's almost like cheating but I should now have a base to build on for any other quads.
    THANKS! (yes, I'm shouting)

  • @fyresg

    Thanks for the tips. I have 3 comments:
    1. Instead of setting board orientation to 270 Yaw degrees, I have set *GYRO and ACCEL Alignments to "180 CW"*. This alleviates calculations done at the software and the MPU6050 chip will do this at the hardware level, saving some cycles.
    2. How about adding some *RC and Yaw Deadbands*? I use deadband of "4" for my X9D+.
    3. I flashed my board *without going into bootloader mode*. All I did was to enable full chip erase, manual baud at 115200.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Using Gyro and Accel align instead does save cycles, you're right.
      Deadband is only needed if your transmitter gimbals are jittery.
      FWIW, I have never been able to do #3, no matter what I tried. But I just did what you described and it worked, so who freaking knows?

    • @fyresg
      @fyresg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My X9D+ and FlySky i6 transmitters are jittery, and would benefit from having deadbands. I've watched your video on the Halls Effect gimbals, so I guess you have them on your transmitters and therefore not requiring any deadbands. But it might be useful to highlight adding deadbands to audiences who do not have good gimbals.
      I wasn't aware of the need for the bootloader trick so since a long time ago, I have been updating my all my Naze32 and SPR F3 boards without going thru the bootloader. I do get failures, and like what you have described in this video, I resolved them by setting the correct baud rate, or I have to click "Flash Firmware" for the second or third time.

      I use -90 yaw compinsation. seems to work. any reason not to?

    • @fyresg
      @fyresg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mrtwisty, as explained in point #1 of my comment, doing so saves CPU cycles and reduces processing load. Do you need it? Maybe, maybe not. But think about it - there is really no harm with this setting, while at the same time it improves efficiency.

    I have an odd problem. After a minor crash, I had a motor lagging behind. It didn't want to spin up as fast, and on punch out, it would definitely lean to the direction of that motor. I purchased extra motors when I ordered the drone, so I replaced the motor. Now, when in acro, and I punch out, it rolls over. It doesn't do this in angle. Im beginning to suspect the problem wasn't initially the motor in the first place. But what else could it be? A failed ESC? But it still fly's fine, just not with hard acceleration. Any ideas?

    This is one of the best videos I've seen online for setup. I've had a problem with my quad for over a month. I've searched for help on every forum I could find. After following along with this video it works again! I don't know why, but at least I'm back in the air. Thank you for helping noobs without the attitude. Subscribing now!

    you can flash this board and the clones enabling and changing to manual baud rate to 256000, without shorting the jumper

    • @nosmokingnl
      @nosmokingnl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, just wanted to post this, my settings for flashing are
      • 256000 baud
      • Manual
      • Full Chip erase
      I see it also in the F3 manual :)
      the 256K baud does something, puts it in bootloader mode or something...

      was going to make same comment, SPRF3 flashes just fine in regular mode every single time- with manual baud (but I'm using OSX, so I guess windows is the problem, as is so very often the case)
      Quad pilots should use a mac. All this driver trouble I see on the internet :(

    Joshua, I’m pretty new in racing drones, I bought a Taranis and I’m starting in DRL simulator, and yes, it is more difficult than flying my DJI, but all your videos are improving my knowledge about racing drones, I expect start with a wizard x220, and all of this video, like all of your videos, is already helping me a lot.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Awesome video - these RTF guys owe you one! The F210 I progressed with had nothing comparable - I'm sure you've spared a lot of heartache with what you've done.

  • @richardt1
    @richardt1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Joshua. This "RTF" was anything but. The good news is that making the adjustments to get it to fly taught me a lot. I was having a great deal of difficulty controlling it so I also reduced each throttle curve setting by almost half. The 100% settings were a little too tight.
    With what I have learned I may be ready to update betaflight as my next "adventure".
    I doubt I would have conquered all this without your videos and your help. Its nice to have an SME, Subject Matter Expert, available.

    Hey Guys. For the RTF model that came with the Naze 32 FC, be careful with the PID loop frequency @ 2kHz if you are fly in angle or horizon mode. Keep it at 1kHz if you fly in Angle/Horizon Mode. Great video Joshua.

    One of the most informative video's on you tube! Only thing that could add to this video is add the RTF Flysky transmitter and show setup using it. Not knowing Betaflight and the Flysky tx it took me many hours watching video's trying to get everything set the correct way. Setting the vacant switches and getting them to work correctly was a challenge. One reason, I wanted the Arm switch. Next I had to figure the different on off for my 3 position switch because I still need angle and horizon. And the most time consuming was finding out why the motors spun without throttle. Air Mode, who knew. Eachine has sold thousands of these and after viewers see your positive feedback the wait list will be 2 months instead of the 1 month I had to wait after I paid for it. Thanks, Thanks, THX!!!

    Fantastic timing, many thanks... I have searched everywhere for this sort of guide, and have not updated for fear of screwing it up. I made that mistake on a donor AIO FC, and completely lost the barometric functionality after flashing.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      Before you start mucking about, go to the CLI and do a dump of the config and save it out so you can go back if you need to.

    • @MangustaMG20

      Yup, learned that the hard way, thanks for the help.. I eventually figured out the set baro_hardware = 0 (default on), 1 = disabled command. Its sortof working now, but not terribly accurate with a lot of drift. this may be a limitation of the FLIP32 AIO board I got. Its very compact, which may be inducing all sorts of noise into the Baro

      One more quick question Josh. When installing the props, do you have to keep turning them until there's no space between the props and the motor or should there be a small space?

    Thought I bricked my Youbi XV-130 board (my first drone). Darn thing didn't have any lights on after a bad flash, so I thought it was dead. Followed your flashing guide at the end. Eureka it worked. Thanks Bro.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      You can almost always recover these boards unless you physically damage the board in some way (damaged CP210 chip, broken bootloader button). Failure to flash is usually a driver or usage issue.

    If I may give a small tip to newbies like me. Have a switch with 2 options: "Fly" mode (acro/rate WITH air), or "Land" mode (angle WITHOUT air). You just need to setup the mode AUX-rates correctly. No need to have Air permanently on... Now you can take off and land, a LOT easier. Gain some confidence. Try landing in "Fly" mode later on, after you developed basic skills. Also, look into having a Headfree toggle switch for line of sight flying :-)

    This is a super video. I wish you had published it a couple months ago when I tried to flash BetaFlight without shorting the bootloader pins on my SP racing F3. The quad was down for a few weeks and I was thinking about ordering a new controller.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yah. Every single SP3 I've tried flashing without putting into bootloader first "bricks". It's not truly bricked because you can flash it if you put it into bootloader, but the config is lost. There definitely are other boards where you can simply hit flash and the GUI will put the board into bootloader mode and flash it with no additional action.k

    • @ibrich42222
      @ibrich42222 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had some success flashing a couple of other boards but was very disappointed when I thought I had bricked the SP3. I am too old to ever be much of a pilot but enjoy the hobby because of the technical side of building and configuring quadcopters. I continue to hope my flying skills will improve in the future.

    Thanks Joshua this was super helpful! I just happened to have my quad (not a X220) sitting by my PC so ran through all the settings you explained, made a couple of changes and learnt a few things along the way.
    I never realised my SPF3 had on-board logging capability, so will be checking out some of your blackbox vids over the next few days.

    Thanks, Josh! Great tips, you were a big help with setting up the wizard. It's a little scary that it's marketed as an ARF, yet the pre-programmed Betaflight doesn't have the board aligned correctly? Yikes. That could be bad for someone who is unaware. Also I will second, third, and fourth the recommendation to always work do your setup with PROPS OFF! I was lucky and had a mishap when I first got into quads, with a small brushed copter. Had that been something like the wizard spinning big sharp props, it would have been much worse.

    Well on the one hand I'm feeling pretty good as I managed to muddle through getting the correct drivers and firmware loaded and the computer talking to fc, finally. On the other I wish I had watched all the way to the end of this video before giving up last time. Anyway, I have learned a lot in the process and think I understand way more than I did even this morning. Thanks for this video and the others which I'm going to use as well.

    You mentioned in the video, using telemetry. I have my x4r-sb connected via smartport to my board and am getting voltage readings, but I'm really in the dark as to the best way to use it.
    Would love a video showing your setup for telemtery on the taranis!

    Wow i only have read half your video and i just had to say something! I have been flying quadcopters since they were invented and have at least 20 transmitters. Yes suddenly things changed. Now comes BNF no transmitter, a receiver of many types to choose from, which one? etc etc .. and now beta flight and clean flight, and just too much all at once for an old guy. I have a FuriBee F90 Wasp which i have never flown yet. It doesnt bind with any of my transmitters. I plugged it into beta flight and no joy, nothing even works and beta flt doesn't recognize it. I am considering the X220 and will purchase it thru your youtube link and probably will have to get it RTF and add another flysky duplicate transmitter to my collection. Your video is amazing that it begins to explain these sudden changes to the entire system, which seems to allow one to purchase a quad and correct receiver to link somehow with one of your existing transmitters, if i understand this correctly and maybe just reading your great video will help this 75 year old to understand how this all comes together. Happy Flying GrampaKenCanada

    Hey Josh, I have a spracingf3, and I never have to physically short the pins any more, since like betaflight 3.0 maybe, I'm not sure. One thing I have found to almost always have a successful flash, (really always for me since doing this but I hate to say ALWAYS) is manual baudrate 256000, and this is what's made a big difference, don't connect before flashing. So if I have been in the config at all before I flash, I unplug the board and plug it back in making sure it doesn't auto connect. Since doing this practice its always flashed no dfu mode, and not failing making me have to short the pins and go to dfu mode. Can't remember the last time I had to short the pins. Just a heads up, try it next time you have to flash an spracingf3, and really I do the fresh plug in on all my Flight controllers anymore and I can't tell you the last time I had a failed, or had to short the pins on any of them. Anyhow, happy flashing/flying!

    Sometimes flashing your board even doesn't work like explained here, but... it always works if you use the Flash Loader Demo Program from STM Microelectronics.
    - download the *.hex file for your FC
    - download and install the program
    - short the bootloader pins (I always solder them, or if I have soldered pins to them I just short them by a plug)
    - start the program and select right com port and baud rate 256000 (This is mandatory !!)
    - click NEXT
    - click REMOVE PROTECTION and NEXT
    - click NEXT
    - tick DOWNLOAD to DEVICE and choose the *.hex file you have downloaded (don't forget to choose a *.hex and not a *.S19 file)
    - click NEXT
    and your *.hex file is flashed all the time and this works very reliable!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This definitely will get the job done, but it's a bit of a long way around to go.

    • @juergenstremmler2286
      @juergenstremmler2286 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flash Loader Program has to be downloaded and installed on a PC only once. Only disadvantage is, that one has to download the *.hex file for the FC you want to flash.
