  • Six years before the Hand of God, England fans are introduced to teenager Diego Maradona as he plays for Argentina against them in a friendly at Wembley in May 1980 and shows his capabilities with several mazy runs. The match produces a memorable 3-1 win for England against the world champions, boosting their confidence ahead of the forthcoming European Championships. David Johnson scores twice, with Kevin Keegan grabbing the other and Daniel Passarella scoring a penalty for Argentina after Maradona is fouled in the area.

The lightning burst from Maradona through the England defence was a rehearsal for his great 1986 goal, but England played well and deserved to win. Love that England strip. And for all the genius of Maradona, my favourite moment was the Kevin Keegan goal ... Kevin Keegan was, is and always will be all time my favourite player. And I am Scottish ! Loved this match !

Maradona showed his class at an early age. I went to this match with my dad and we travelled from Aylesbury. We wanted to see the highlights, but we would not have got home in time to see them, so we took our portable tv and plugged it into my dads car and watched the highlights in Harrow-on-the-hill car park, good times.

I first heard of Maradona in 1979... before he'd even played that friendly against Scotland. It was in a magazine piece by Osvaldo Ardiles, who'd moved to Tottenham by then. There was a photograph of Maradona and alongside it the words of Ardiles..."Diego Maradona - without doubt the greatest player I have ever seen". I was thinking, who is this 18-year-old guy if he's so good? Why have I not even heard his name? Then we (Scotland) found out in June 1979, and England in this match. He remains to this day, in my opinion, the best player there's ever been.

Now its club before country and players pulling out of squads so they are available for clubs following international break while plying for your country is everything still for nations like Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Italy, Germany etc !! And player cliques in the squad is also something that lets the national team down for once since Terry Venables we have somebody who may be able to hopefully change all that and restore the love and pride in the shirt, bring back the fans love and hope for England and see us fulfill our huge potential as a team and that's Gareth Southgate !! Maradona was an undoubtably fantastically gifted&skillful player.
But an few yrs ago,I got to see that famous England game once again..
First of all u had him punching the ball into the net(over Peter shilton's head)and then Glenn Hoddle gets taken out by the Argentinan Centre half(Batista?)about 30 yds out from their goal(as clear a foul as ur ever likely to see,he lifted Hoddle into the air)and then after a few passes it broke to Maradona and he waltzed through a England Team still reeling from that previous decision.
So after the original offence was committed his rep was tainted in my eyes and seeing that re run yrs later, only confirmed that view..Pele,Cruyff etc didn't feel the need to behave in this way!!

He was a truly great midfield general who could score goals, and then in his 30s a truly great centre forward able to score goals as the spearhead, and I never saw another player who could be so outstanding in both roles. Maradona could certainly not play at centre forward and get goals. Argentina tried him there in 1982 and it failed.

But look at the way Clements cut down the angle for his shot so he missed. Shilton didn't do that.

I was 11 years old and the hype about El Dios was huge pre internet. No one had really seen anything of him so we had to rely on the press. If I recall this was shown really late on MOTD so was not live. Too late for me to be allowed to stay up I relied on my Dad to recount everything the next morning. My Dad was a massive George Best fan and he said he had never seen anyone as potentially great as El Dios. He described how Diego took on the English defence single (mind the pun) handedly. No repeats in those days and no chance of recording it it was many years until I saw this. Diego later said he learnt from this miss in 86 Mexico to go around the GK (Shilton). IMO not even Messi or Zidane and definitely not CR7 comes close to Diego possibly Ronaldhino but his light extinguished too soon unlike El Dios who still shines today.

4:22 The real reason for the Falklands War. Maggie should have handed them over in embarrassment after this tackle from clogger Watson.
