England 2-2 Argentina (1974)

  • No meeting between England and Argentina seems complete without controversy and that is the case in a friendly at Wembley in May 1974 as England dispute the visitors being awarded a late penalty in a 2-2 draw. Mario Kempes scores twice for Argentina as they recover from 2-0 down, with Mick Channon and Frank Worthington having scored for England under caretaker manager Joe Mercer.
(Apologies incidentally for any confusion about David Coleman describing an action replay in which he felt England should have had a penalty just before they went 2-0 up, the footage isn't in the feed this is from).

I’ve waited 46 years to see the end of this match!!As a group of students in London back then we (not me I wanted to stay ) decide to leave early to avoid the crowds , but missed the equaliser for Argentina , thinking England had won 2-1 . Still a great game and superb entertainment !!

England vs Argentina is always a promise of good football. Both teams give their all and the spectacle is the favoured one. I am very sorry that England were knocked out of the 1974 World Cup in Germany, as they had a great team and excellent players. Greetings and respect from Argentina.

What was wrong with Argentine football before 78? Was it politics or the coaches as they seemed to underperform.

@@Lovelylove4everyone Lack of organisation and planning.
The federation was run by corrupted muppets.
Proof of that is that argentine local clubs were winning the continental and intercontinental trophies (Racing, Independiente, Estudiantes) but the national team was crap.
After the awful performance in WC 1958 argentine football changed drastically to a conservative, defensive and very aggressive at times. That certainly have not helped to perform.
We were out of WC1970 due to the federation and style.
In 1974 we had a much better side although still chaotic and finally from 78 we had some consistency.

Not sure why the crowd were booing as it seemed a stonewall penalty to me thanks to crazy horse and yet another mistimed tackle that can't really be argued with. Interesting that Mario Kempes was in the Argentinian team and only the second cap for Brooking too. Several of this England team have unfortunately passed away now and a couple of names I had no idea had played for England (Alec Lindsay & Keith Weller) . RIP Frank Worthington - a true maverick.

It was right in the bottom corner for fuck's sake. Is he supposed to jump the other way like most idiot keepers do now? Shilton had the right idea; only perfect penalties go in if you go the right way. It's not his fault twats like Pearce and Waddle couldn't hit the corners in '90.

@@@keithwellerlounge74 ...I agree with your point, Kempes was world class and knew what he was doing, but slightly changing the topic... if I remember correctly, poor old Chris Waddle received all the blame for England´s World Cup exit in 1990 (because he took the last penalty - which always sticks in everybody´s mind), whereas, as you correctly say, Pearce also missed his pen on that fateful night (hence the over-the top celebration as he exorcised his demons by scoring a pen against Spain in 1996 in the Euro championships).

The last time I saw this was watching it on sports night in 1974! A few thoughts. Why didn't the FA give the job to joe mercer. Instead they brought in Revie who ballsed everything up. Also it's strange that worthington and weller didn't receive more caps, they were good players. And finally that was definitely a penalty, emlyn Hughes had form for protesting decisions even though he knew the ref was right.
At the time I can remember being a bit disappointed not to win, but also thinking that it was a good performance against a very good team. Kempis would go on to be player of the tournament at World Cup 1978.

It was almost as if he was just feeding into the hype that the Argentines were dirty and so he came in th game already demonising them. +The Boss Can you find any footage of this alleged dirty play in 66 by the Argentina players? Anytime I've seen film of the game, there has been the same foul shown over and over again , and while it was a foul, it wasn't a particularly bad one.
The entire game was shown live, yet I haven't seen even one really bad tackle from the game. Doesn't that strike you as odd? If someone shows me film of dirty play by the Argentina players I'll admit I was wrong.
You do realise Rattin was sent off for having the temerity to ask for an interpreter? I don't know why he did this, maybe the fact that the England players committed more fouls but weren't getting punished for them could, have been the reason.

Nothing controversial about that penalty - Hughes clearly took him down. Frankly with that, plus Shilton's shockingly poor goalkeeping that resulted in Kempes's goal, England gifted Argentina the draw. Performances of this quality are the reason why we failed to qualify for the World Cup that year.
This period was roughly the beginning of our long, idiotic belief that the glory of 1966 meant we deserved to beat other teams. Thankfully, with our performance at the 2018 World Cup - with a young team clearly not bogged down with the ghosts of the past - we might just be starting to dig ourselves out of that hole. +Philip Raiswell Very true. In those days England pressed its pace and rythm over everyone. I remember clearly another England-Argentina match in 1980 when Maradona performed incredibly great, but even so England scored 3-1. I remember also an England Brazil in 81 when Brazil won 1-0, but suffered a tremendous pressure till the very end and was lucky to survive. The only match I recall the english were really outpaced and outplayed in Wembley was a 0-2 to Holland in 1977. That day Johan Cruyff comanded the play like I've never seen before and never saw again. Nowadays the english team seems to me to lack personality and class. Also, Wembley Stadium was an awesome temple of football and today is only another hypermodern boring and ordinary stadium.

I agree with most of that but sadly, the history books will tell you that it was also the "wilderness" years for the English national team. England didn't qualify for the finals of the WC in either '74 or 78 even though, ironically at the same time, English club sides were having the most successful period they've ever had in Europe.

    • @philipraiswell3570

True, but in those days only 16 teams qualified (one from each group) and England were drawn with two excellent sides in Poland (1974) and Italy (1978). Both those sides reached the last four and England were a match for both of them in the groups.

what's funny about that penalty is there were two "fouls" - Hughes got tripped by his own teammate, which then led him to fall and scissor down Kempes. I think Hughes was frustrated by the fact he wasn't fully at fault. Right back is not where I'd have ever played him, btw.

I noted someone wrote ‘criminal that Weller and Worthington weren’t awarded more caps.’ The answer was they played for an ‘unfashionable’ club at the time. Leicester had a good side then, Whitworth got a look in only, Shilton was just about established with England. The same followed years later; Lineker was only good enough on leaving City, as was Alan Smith, and latterly Chilwell and now Maddison. Heaven knows, if Vardy had left Leicester years ago, perhaps he would have challenged Kane’s England crown? It’s the establishment’s perception of ‘preferred’ players from ‘preferred’ clubs. Sadly this idea still exists.

We'd not long had the Poland WC 1-1 draw and the fervour that engulfed that game, this was just the same. I don't know if it's just Dave's commentary 'lilt' here, but we seemed to fall into a black hole from 73' until we qualified for the '82 World cup. I often wonder if the sardonic splendour of England's footy squad wallowing in defeats contributed to everyone buggering off on strike in the mid-1970's.

England should've brought this team to the World Cup Russia 2018 but, they didn't! couldn't!
Trevor Brooking of West Ham United! I still remember him! a player I will never forget! can't!!
Trevor played with England in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, in their group match, they defeated
France three goals to one very easily!!! Platini played for France who then reached the semifinal!
England played in quarterfinals against Germany and Spain! Germany to semifinal to play against
France!!! England goes home!!! surprise! surprise!...bla bla bla so many sweet memories of international good football.

I am surprised that England didn't qualify to '74 & '78 WCups. I was too young to remember this one but I remember the game in 1979 when they beat us 3-1. Great team. Maradona played incredibly that game also. It is a pleasure to watch those games now. And it was certainly more difficult to qualify to the World cup those days with only 16 teams.
