  • England beat West Germany for just the second time since the 1966 World Cup final as they enjoy a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 victory in the Azteca 2000 tournament in Mexico in June 1985. Bryan Robson opens the scoring, before Kerry Dixon's first two England goals complete the victory as Peter Shilton saves a penalty. Includes post-match interviews with Dixon and England manager Bobby Robson and analysis from Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves with Jim Rosenthal.

    In a parallel universe Kerry Dixon used this performance to cement a starting place in Mexico 86, won the World Cup scoring a shed load of goals thanks to Barnes and Hoddle constantly setting him up, and is now presenting Match of the Day and selling crisps.

      Very sad instead of playing Dixon they took Lineker and Peter Beardsley..thou wonder England could not win the easy 1986 world cup.. Maradona was outstanding but England could beat them if Wilkins was not suspended

      @@darrylfernandes4806 yeah Beardsley was rubbish wasn’t he. Went on to achieve nothing in his career…just amazing at Newcastle…Liverpool (he would have won the European cup had they not been banned I’m sure)…Everton..Newcastle…then Fulham in his late 30’s.
      Lineker and Andy Cole both said he’s the best strike partner they ever had. It was Beardsleys ball against Poland in ‘86 that kickstarted England, and he was a major factor in Italia 90…along with a couple of other ‘Geordies’.
      Have to agree Dixon was excellent here, and a quality striker for Chelsea..but none of the big teams at the time (Liverpool/Man Utd/arsenal/Everton ) came in for him…so that tells its own story(Hughes left Man Utd, rush left Liverpool, Lineker left Everton….they would have needed a replacement 🤷🏼‍♂️)

      Walkers would never have sponsored King Kerry. They want with the jug eared vvanker because they were both from Leicester.
      The parallel universe that Kerry needed to save him and transform his life was to sign for Ron Atkinson's Man United and save us all from Fergie's domination. Things worked out very well for CFC and Man United, not so well for either Kerry or Big Ron.

    Real collectors item here - Shilton saving a penalty! Great keeper but he rarely ever got near one.
    Such similarities in that Barnes cross for the third - He'd repeat it a little over twelve months later in the very same stadium - twice for Lineker's goal and 'near' goal against Argentina in the QF.

      @altovelli08 not hard to be more successful than England tbf. Despite all their titles I've never really enjoyed the German national team like other winners, or even teams that haven't won. French, Dutch, Brazilians and Spanish have produced better teams and players and have been far better to watch. Dutch really should have won loads of titles with the amount of great teams and players they've produced.
      Germany have been successful but seldom captured the imagination like others. Disciplined and strong, but lacking in fantasy. Like a more successful version of England, though even England have produced some fantasy players here and there.

    • @jamesmason8436
      @jamesmason8436 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @altovelli08 some great players, sure, but none I'd pay good money to watch. Not much individual flair but great team play and tactically excellent. They passed and kept the ball really well as a result of Guardiola's influence on the Bayern spine.
      Brazil were awful in 2014, has to be said. And they were without their two best players. But yes, that 7-1 was something special. I laughed so much during that game - if any team at that WC deserved it it was that dirty Brazil team who'd been so filthy in taking Colombia out of the tournament.
      But even then I'd put that result down to good pressing, punishing individual mistakes and efficient finishing rather than breathtaking football.

He plays on instead of Steve Hodge who’s never on the pitch to slice that backpass to Maradona. We win the QF 1-0, Hoddle and Robson score in the SF and we beat the Germans in the final. The game would’ve remained attritional until Barnsey came one. He exploited the lack of Argentina’s width. We came alive when he came on and crossed for Linekers goal. Barnes got caned in his day, just like Sterling when he started for England. Folk have conveniently short memories.When he first came on the scene England had one of the worst teams for ages, can''t remember if it was Euros or WC qualifiers but I do remember that in the qualifiers the games were all tight and England were very average but Barnes either scored or assisted every goal in the group but as he was the outstanding player the other teams were on him and he didnt shine BUT it was him as made the difference in every single game, with either a bit of magic for an assist or actually scoring. Yet all you got in the press was mindless slagging, jut like they did with Sterling. Newspapers have their favourites and they particualrly love a goal scorer who scores lots of goals but whose teams, they fail to notice, don't win too much stuff. Greaves was one, loads of goals not too much in the way of trophies. (heresy)Lineker , Owen, considering their scoring prowess they didnt win that much. Whereas less glam players like Peter Withe Peter Beardsley did.

    Robson made the mistake of taking Hately over Dixon, when Dixon had been the leading goalscorer in division One in both 85 and 86. @turtleilike 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really it kinda confirms it. We beat them in a qualifier match 5-1. They always beat us when we face them in tournament knockout games. Partly because Germany are awesome partly because England stiffen up and shit their pants when we play them. After 1990 England have genuinely frozen whenever we played Germany, they really have us by the balls technically and psychologically. The Germans are much more interested in Germany v Holland to be honest, it's got a lot more recent history and it's usually a closer game than England give them. They hate each other and it's always been the ruthless efficiency and togetherness of Germany v the technical beauty, total football and divided dressing room of Holland.

    • @amazed66
      @amazed66 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** they don't always beat us in tournament knockouts considering England beat Germany 1-0 in the 2000 Euros when Shearer scored, and I'm also not sure how a flukey deflected OG in WC 1990 as opposed to a decent England goal in the same game, or Germany being 2-0 up in the WC 2010 to then have England score 2 perfectly good goals but only be awarded one counts as "stiffen up and shit their pants." :)
      To come from behind in both of those games to level in one and should have levelled in the other doesn't seem like the actions of a team that has shit its pants. If anything in the latter game, Germany would be more likely to do that having been 2 up and then gone in at HT at 2-2, as they should have done.

    • @turtleilike

      ***** If you're going to come out with stuff like "next" as if you are trying to emphasise you have adequately replied to my original point, it might actually be a good idea if you get your facts right and know what you are talking about if you do so, otherwise you only succeed in making yourself look a bit silly.
      When England beat Germany 1-0 in the 2000 Euros, it was in the second of the group games, where at the time after each team had only played one game, Portugal had 3 points, Germany and Romania had 1 point each and England had no points.
      That means there were still potentially a maximum of 7 points for Germany to reach or 6 points for for England, so quite how you assess that as a "A POINTLESS DEAD RUBBER GROUP MATCH" is beyond me.
      Er, NEXT!
