Most mega stars come from their parent throwing them off a cliff to make them stronger. Michael Jordan threw himself off the cliff to make himself stronger, then convinced himself that other people threw him just so he could spite them.

This kind of thing is really interesting to me because when I was growing up, the time of Jordan had already kind of turned into this sort of legend. In my mind at least, Kobe was the main thing to follow, and Jordan was this sort of immortalized figure on top of the mountain, long separated from everyone else. Growing up being an athlete/playing sports, guys like Jordan, Brady, Tiger and Kobe are held to this pedestal because of their “killer mentality.”
But everyone of the stories surrounding this mentality come off completely sociopathic when you take them out of (and even in) the context of sports.
On a podcast I listen to, someone was telling a “funny” Tom Brady story about before he was starting for the Patriots. Back in 01, Brady was the backup QB behind Drew Bledsoe, who the latter took out on the town with a few other members of the team in order to have a fun night out. The limo driver, Drew’s personal driver, let everyone out and parked the car, only to turn around and find Brady still sitting in the backseat. Brady then proceeded to hound the driver with question after question about Bledsoe, finding every bit of information about the man that he could. His strengths and his weaknesses. He then left the car and didn’t party with the rest of the group.
    Pure psychopathic shit.

To be fair "might makes right" kind of fits like a glove for athletes. Your income is tied to how much might you bring to your sport, you have to dominate others for victory. Every highlight victory means a bigger paycheck, more potential deals for free cash when your knees finally give out, and glory as one of the legends of the thing you've dedicated your life to. I don't mind competitive people as long as they're grinding in something that needs heavy competition. Playing a game against friends, chill. But playing on the world stage where millions and gold are on the line? Be as psycho as you need to push yourself.

People forget that MJ played for the Bulls for 6/7yrs without winning a championship and then 3-peated. Pippen doesn't join until 87, 3yrs after Jordan signed to the Bulls. Phil Jackson joins in 87 as an assistant coach and 89 becomes head coach. That trifecta right there is what got the Bulls to 3-peat. MJ & Pippen were a dynamic duo, but Phil Jackson at the helm really made that team pop. What makes MJ the GOAT in basketball is that he didn't bounce from the Bulls after losing because in his mind and words he could make any player great on the Bulls regardless. That mentality right there is the difference between MJ and other players, maybe Chris Paul from the Suns, but Kobe's mentality was you're not good enough to play with me and LeBron's is I'm too good for this team and they were players the relied on other talent to get them championships. MJ could take in whoever under work with them to get that potential out to that players max ability, but also he knew the value of his teammates because Rodman had that man sweating in Vegas searching for him. Yes MJ was competitive to a fault, but his leadership skills are almost unmatched in today's league.

I mean, I think these GOATS are miserable and I don’t want to be like them. I don’t give a shit if everybody and their grandma knows my name if it means I’m a fucking miserable sociopathic asshole all the time. Albeit there’s a balance: of course it’s good to aim for your own personal goals of success/fulfillment in your personal life. But just not to the extreme endless competitiveness of these crazy people we’re talking about.

MJ may have sacrificed a portion of his humanity for ultimate basketball power but at least he's stronger for it. At least he's not an old man getting in twitter beefs with men half his age or less who are current players. Shaq and Barkley could learn a lot from him

Shaq would have been the biggest basketball monster of all time if he had the same mentality as Jordan or Kobe

The dude that bet against Jordan for those shoes was an idiot, bet for him, not against him.

I recall reading a book from the man who trained both of them. He mentioned while Kobe was brutal, he was more empathetic to his teammates than Jordan. If anything it was to keep them from shutting down.

I hardly ever pay attention to sports. When I do, it's not because I want to see someone win. I want to see someone lose in a way that visibly shames or breaks them. Winning teams are just doing their job; they're doing what they always intended to do, so that's kind of normal. A team that tries its hardest but still fails miserably, to the point where it's clear they shouldn't even have tried, that's some great shit.
