To me, the main thing that put Pat in the top percent of youtubers/influencers is making an attempt at avoiding hypocrisy. He has dumb opinions, weird stretches, bad taste and inconsistent behavior, but he's not doing the "C'mon commenters I just gave my (objectively wrong) opinion on something, you guys can't handle (invalid) criticism??? buaaaaaaa".

Worst part is the fatalities in 11 weren't even made well compared to prior games.

@@SorakuFett MK11 fatalities were made to be goofy and fun rather than realistic or gruesome, and I preferred that silly approach. Jax's "Home Run!" fatality has become one of my favorites in the series.

I’ve wined and dined MK, loved 9 and MKX and don’t mind the overall story. But now I can’t stand its choices, it wants to be new and cool and throw away the cheesiness of the 90s when deep down it’s lives and dies based of its cheesiness.
It also got infected by DC and Warner Bros so now they reboot themselves every second.
Fans and haters often times overlap. Just one wants the franchise to be better, and the other wants it to be gone
@@li-limandragon9287 The problem is, with DC you can tell hundreds, if not thousands of stories with a characters within a decade. NRS rebooted MK in 2011 with MK9. And now 12 years later, 3 games later, they're rebooting again. Pat was right when he said they should be ashamed of themselves. You can't tell 3 stories without fucking up and needing to reboot? Pink slips need to be handed out at NRS.
@@IrishKyokushin They’re also banking the appeal of the mascot ninjas who aren’t even the main characters of the story. If they were willingly to sit down and try new things like Scorpion/Sub-Zero game in a Seikro Tsushima style that would or remake stuff like Special Forces or Konquest it would probably be great.
Street Fighter is willingly to experiment hard even with their newest release that’s making up for the previous game.

It is funny to me how much hate MK gets from the "tradition FGC" scene when it is the most popular FG bar none. I honestly feel like a lot of "purists" just hate anything that isn't structured off the backbone that SF started with and are salty that MK is massively successful with a casual audience over SF and other Japanese fighting games.
Yeah it is dumb, but I like it. It is easier to just get angry and hate things than engage with it on an earnest level.
It's not the factor of like oh it's popular and they hate it it's more just fatigue sure we'll get somewhat better gameplay I guess I hope the story probably might be stupid but the ones in the mortal Kombat is known for is fatalities and that's it
it's not salt, it's just not a good fighting game. The original gameplay was based on digitized photos which made the gameplay very stilted and each character had the same normal attacks with only different special moves . Not only that but all the characters were the same size, same speed, and jumped the same. Street Fighter 2 had various fighters each with a distinct fighting style except Ken and Ryu. Street Fighter had characters with different reaches, different normal attacks, jumped at different distances, and had different learning curves for each character. In MK the same foundational stiffness in basic gameplay remains which is a shame.
MK might hit high highs, but the audience doesn't stick around for long. People aren't "salty" because of the success, they're critiquing it for being sloppy.
There's genuinely no way that trailer is gameplay, unless it's UE5 or is using a ton of raytracing effects.

- shadows pick up insanely small details yet get softer the further they're cast
- particle effects influence lighting with full global illumination
- no polygonal edges in sight.

So I'm an old man at this point and I was never a fan of the gore fatalities to begin with, but I think at this point it's just... You want to tell a serious dramatic story, but to do that, no one can do the gore that makes up your main selling point, and in the arcade mode, in fights that are, from your own framing, ranging from blood feuds to FRIENDLY SPARS WITH YOUR DAD you can end them by brutally murdering them.
Mortal Kombat has outgrown fatalities. Well it hasn't, but it should have. If I want horrific gore I have HORROR games for that. And it'll be fitting there!
I vaguely remember this quote from Sugarpunch that's somewhere along the lines of:
"In MK, a sparring match between Jax and his daughter can end with Jax ripping her head open and pressing his cigar on it"
It's fitting that Mortal Kombat is somewhat associated with DC characters, because that's another universe that's been hard rebooted twice, soft rebooted 2 or 3 times, and also UNrebooted.
DC is a world I like but if you stand too close you’ll get infected with its BS.
It’s strange that in comparison Capcom never really got hurt by it’s association with Marvel, at least until Infinite and that was a purely “We can’t use the X-Men” not a “We gotta reboot this reboot this shit every second”.

Such is VF's lot. MK has a shallow but widespread appeal, whereas VF appeals to a specific niche with absolutely no ability to grow beyond it.

I completely agree that MK9 feels like it's the first MK to have it's gameplay be a primary objective instead of "Wouldn't this be cool!" I like MK but sadly it's biggest problems stem from the most important aspect of Fighting Games.
That’s why I think MKX deserves more praise for its innovations and 11 more spite for throwing it all away for the sake of looking prettier.

Am I the only one taken aback by Pat’s sudden HARD turn on MK? This is the same guy who repeatedly sung the praises of MKX a few years back right? Granted MK11 was… err, ssss, mmm… but that’s a LOT of hatred that must’ve built up over the years.
Oh Pat loves MK, but the quality has plummeted so much while the same shit Is getting repeated over and over that he’s stopped caring.
I personally hate MK11 for throwing away the progress MK9 and MKX was making.
MKX is by far the best of the Mortal Kombats, but it loses its luster after playing other, better fighting games.
@@fissilewhistleI've played other fighting games and I personally think MKX is still fantastic. The issue is I feel like people don't see that different games are going for different approaches. Guilty Gear Strive is about speed and mechanical complexity for example meanwhile MK I feel is a slower, more methodical approach to a fighting game. It's like how the FPS genre can have both Doom Eternal and ARMA, they are the same genre technically but they have different goals.

Trick question, yes it would.
I'll admit it's a real headass analogy but MK12's story so far is just giving me the same vibes of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric in that they're going to say they will present something new or explore uncharted territory with a new universe or timeline but give you either nothing or bare bones. Or at worst, they do things that didn't necessarily require a whole new timeline. I love Street Fighter and I'll say with no hesitation that the story has been all over the place a very long time. But at least they stuck with it and didn't send us back to Street Fighter One but rather use SF6 to be a new launching pad for new storylines. Capcom went ahead and made a villain that tricks Ken into utilizing cryptocurrency to bring a third world country into the modern age and almost breaks him mentally by giving him 3 minutes to commit terrorism in order to save his kid. That's fucking wild but also one hell of a change up from M. Bison at the same time.
It's funny to think that SF might have been rebooted if Ono stayed on the project, as Rose's ending in SFV alluded to. On the contrary, I'm happy they finally decided to move past SF3 and not stay in the SF2-nostalgia bubble, so that we can see characters develop and end up in interesting scenarios (that's where the Ken example comes up).
Even with a series like Guilty Gear that's bloated with lore, I respect that they kept building on that setting and even managed to conclude the main character's arc after 25 years. Then you have MK which has managed to reboot itself twice in the span of 10 years and only 3 games.

Woolie has been impailed by the Spear of Longinus on a Hill that he never should have been standing on in the first place, defending it only because it was Pat, Naked, in the Rain, Assaulting it. He is shirtless, also in the Rain, watching as raindrops fall slowly down upon his brow. He threw the spear. Pat caught and impaled him with it.
I hate agreeing with Pat.
Mortal Konbat is in a similar position as Dead or Alive. The main feature that made it stand out is becoming somewhat of a burden.
That and it evolved and adapted a lot slower than their oroginal competition back in old arcades.
All these years of CSB and just now for the first time are we hearing Pat name drop Matt.

It's kinda sad how the first few MK games probably have some of the best animations just because they were scanned in from real people meant that the body dynamics were at least correct

I guess all I'll say to Pat's whole point is, the value of a character isnt defined by if you can remember their name or not.
Meat for instance is so ridiculously offbrand, sure you remember his name, but only because of how much of a sore thumb he is to the franchise. You remember him but he doesn't count. Only time he ever will is if he was brought back and made into a serious character (not impossible i dont think)
Cassie Cage is an easy name to remember, but even if you don't remember archer dude's name, he fits the world totally fine. Better than Meat in his original form.

I think there might have been a misunderstanding / miscommunication. From my understanding, woolie was not stating that MK11 was among the best fighting games or even comparable, just that he was able to have fun with it. Pat seemed to interpret anything positive being said about woolies experience with mk11, as being a statement about mk11 being as good as ita contemporaries, or something along those lines. I didnt feel woolie was hyping the game at all, just looking at the pros and cons.
I remember years ago Pat said MK11 was bad, and Woolie said Pat is crazy, it’s a good game. Woolie usually would qualify if he thought it was just fun despite not being too good
I hope we get Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub-Zero lore in MK1. There is NO POINT in a new origins age starting timeline if we don't get to know more about the original Sub-Zero in a game CALLED MORTAL KOMBAT 1 (I love you Kuai Liang still though)
If they remade the PS1 games and made them good there would be no complaints. Hell a updated Shaolin Monks in a Sekiro or Tsushima style would be great.

I agree. MK has made a lot of progress over the years AND they still feel bad to play for me. I think MKX was probably the best one, 11 felt similar but made a lot of gameplay system changes that I thought were terrible but in terms of gameplay, I have never really liked NRS games.
MK11’s gameplay was bad, it’s story barring a few of endings was bad and people are only giving it a break because graphically it’s sexy as all hell.

Which is weird for me to say as a massive fan of Guilty Gear, a series known for bonkers looking characters with lots of belts, but the designs and clothes-set there are detailed and balanced color-wise in order to not look off and somehow maintain immersion in their crazy world (the latest game, Strive, gave everyone a big glowup in that department). I guess you could say they look crazy, but they manage to sell that crazy-ness.

As usual, pats statements have a diamond of truth under the searing hyperbole. Mortal kombat has always relied on gimmicks to stand out, Super Turbo vs MK2 or even UMK3 is pretty one sided in terms of gameplay.
At least they used to be innovative. Of course it all starts with Fatalities but MK9s story mode was a game changer, unless you count anime adaptations, it might have been the first time a Fighting Game had a story mode, that was game changing for the genre for better and for worse

Essentially the argument is that Woolie appreciates the progress made in the last 3 games, while Pat thinks it's too little too late

MKX, though it looks like ass, feels 1000x better to play than MK11
MK11 feels like playing SF1 in comparison to MKX, and its really off putting for a game so over the top to feel so restrictive with its control and handeling
To say nothing of character balance or game mechanics, MKX feels more fun to play because I at least don't feel like I'm underwater the whole f*cking time

MK tends to have a similar problem that sonic the hedgehog has. They’ll have some good ideas here and there but the execution isn’t always excellent. So instead of trying to stick to those good ideas and improve on them they’ll just keep adding in new mechanics that they don’t know how to make feel fun or even balance properly.

The cartoonish blood and violence of the first Mortal Kombat was subversive and controversial for its time, but I gotta say that staring at people being turned into living fruit gushers has gotten more and more nauseating as the graphics get more realistic.
Really, the big thing is that it's gotten less and less interesting. Fatalities haven't advanced because the only thing the devs have given them is shock value. They never really understood how to use them to express the characters doing them, except for the Cages. They could _easily_ have crafted Fatalities that exemplify who the fighters are, but all I see is "oh, they're all Jigsaw with different tools."

@@J_Themborn Oh absolutely. I was already there. Mortal Kombat just feels so behind the times in playability, competitiveness, and fun factor. It is SO reliant on fatalities and graphics, and the story is just gone now.
I genuinely believe if they just started over from the top, square one, let's retell the original trilogy mostly the same but with a much bigger focus on gameplay and ascending MK as a Fighting Game then we'd be great off.

In some ways. Pat is right. I like MK, but it has nothing on fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Gulity Gear, and even Skullgirls.
I’d even put most Dragon Ball games above MK’s gameplay, even biggest button mushers where most of the characters feel the same. At least they feel fun to play.
