The first time your boss should know you’re forming a union is when the whole shop serves them a demand for union recognition. Loose lips sink ships.
Unions only really work when firing literally everyone and rehiring everyone isn't a viable solution.
Also, it's just a temporary bulwark until the union becomes sufficiently detached from the workers and does nothing but collect dues and threaten to strike whenever the company does something that threatens the union's existence regardless of how that impacts the workers.
@@NotAGoodUsername360 A temporary solution is better then no solution at all.
It's because of departments like HR creating the illusion of the company caring. People are too quick to forget and forgive.
@@dudere A costly temporary solution that leaves you worse that you were at the beginning is worse that no solution at all. Government intervention and people just not supporting games from companies that do this crap is a much more effective solution.
And it is exactly what is happening in this case, this things are not new, workers have been complaining for years, but the second there is a investigation from the government you get the BIG "oh SHIT" from the companies, and if players don't buy the games then any company that is not a front of money laundering will go down. An union will cost a fuckload of effort from the workers to create, and even after that it will have little to no power to improve their situation.

It's not unusual that Pat could not find when DICE employees unionized, because, well, in sweden, employees forming a union is nothing news. It would be bigger thing if they chose *not* to unionize.
Yeah, pretty common in the nordic states.
I was thinking to myself as he was looking 'Probably unionized as the company was founded.'.
Literally everywhere should have a union. Its not a debate its common sense. A buisness is a a relationship of two parts the worker and the owner and that relationship is irreconcilable so a union must be created to stop workers from being atomized and exploitated. I don't understand how this is a debate in America and Canada at all.
I'd honestly take a guess that EA probably tried to close down the union when they bought them, only for the Swedish government not to let them.
@@yodabaki970 Literal fucking propaganda to convince people unions are lazy parasites that do nothing but leach money from them played non-stop.
It's disgusting.

Unions are an equalizer to an inherently imbalanced power relationship. Are they perfect? Hell no, but they're a step in the right direction and you're a fucking idiot if you think otherwise.
Business shills blow me away. They really think if given all the power, somehow, a company will treat them humanely. Rather then bleed them dry.
The Gilded Age happened. We *know* what happens. This isn't up for debate. Quistlings, the lot of them.
People bled and died for those labor rights. And they want to offer them up on a platter because 'Unions bad!'
Fuckwads.
Actually, they couldn't even not unionize. Swedish labour laws are so strict that even foreign nationals who explicitly do not want to unionize are still covered under collective bargaining in their field, as the supreme court have ruled on a case where a shipping company tried to use non-unionized eastern European workers to circumvent/undermine the union but were still forced to use the union contracts.

I sure am glad Zangief was able to put his dog input on the Activision-Blizzard situation.
5:15 Zangief taking over the stream for a second. Lol
I always knew it was only a matter of time before Zangief became more powerful than Pat.
I disagree with Pat’s statement about locks on breastfeeding rooms. Why? Because he’s unintentionally being way too NICE to shitty studios and management. $300? Hell, to do the absolute bare fucking minimum for the cheapest of cheap skates you’d need like $5-$10 and 20 minutes to put a cheap crappy bolt or chain on the inside of the door. This is so bad that even his attempt to say how awful it is is actually still too charitable for the people at companies like ActiBlizz.
There is so many layers to that.
First, it's not that the lock was broken and they were too lazy to fix it; there never was a lock to begin with.
And then there's "Hey, cool, you don't want to put a lock. Could you at least tell those creeps to cut it out?" "Sure, we are looking into it....... someday"
I don’t think he was trying to explicitly refer to bad management. I think he was saying GOOD management would pay to have it fixed ASAP, including buying a lock and paying someone to install it properly and professionally to ensure that it would not happen again.
Maybe the answer is Co-owned game studios, also known as:
"Every worker, a member of the board"
If you meet Bobby in person, your actual inner monologue goes: "Dios Mio! (Draws a cross) A LIBERAL!"
O so failure.
Another fun fact. Ion Hazzikosts (the current game director for WoW) was an associate at WilmerHale (the law firm Bobby Kotick said they were hiring to investigate themselves) before he was hired to work at Blizzard. Ya that's totally not a conflict of interest at all lol.
Also, iirc the spit emote is still in classic. They just made it so that you can't use it on players. Gotta protect the pay pigs' fee fees.
What the story with the spit emoji?
@@Canadish People used an addon to auto spit on people who paid for a boost and/or mount in classic tbc.
Blizzard being the bad guys doesn't mean you have to defend harassment. but no, keep up that good fight.
@@omegaxtrigun That's actually fantastic.
@@miguelnewmexico8641 "Defend harssment" please. It's an emote. Anyone crying about it needs to grow up.
You can /ignore players to block their chat and emotes from appearing for you. There is no need to change how the emote works. The game already has a built in system to counteract that.
Also, even if I were to agree that it's a problem, the bigger issue is that blizz did this ONLY because people who were buying boosts and mounts were being harassed. People have been spitting on each other for one and a half decades in WoW but only NOW did they disable it on other players, and ONLY in classic. aka they only did it because they didn't want whales' feelings to be hurt.
They couldn't care less about harassment as a whole. If they did you'd be able to report people and get an actual response in a reasonable time frame and the harasser be punished accordingly. But they don't because blizzard is too cheap to keep enough customer service reps around to handle it.
And it burns burns burns.

I've had bosses that were blindingly incompetent in the past. One to the point that I swear she was borderline illiterate. Would refuse to actually read anything. Would delegate most, if not all of her work. I remember one time she called me to her desk, repeatedly pointed to an email on her screen and told me to 'take care of it'. I told her I had no idea what 'it' was because the email was too vague, so she printed it out. I took the paper to another higher up, who laughed and said 'I'll take care of it. This has literally nothing to do with you.'

Didn't know DICE is a Swedish game studio. Makes complete sense on why they're unionized, since by law in Sweden they have to.
Yeah but they're European and Europeans are very liberal and not conservative not saying there aren't.
This just in, Blizzard is still on fire.
Unions don't protect DICE from EA, they protect the WORKERS of DICE from DICE so long as DICE isn't worker owned.
Still, Dice higher-ups still answer to EA. So in a fashion it's a safeguard. More than nothing at least
@@zombieplasticclock EA can always find another scapegoat dice knows it.
@@zombieplasticclock The power of unions is in their ability to collectively bargain. This is why unions are (rightfully) aggressive towards scabs, and people that refuse to join the union, since it ultimately undermines the power of collective action.
Ideally you would want every subsidiary of EA to bargain as ONE union, rather than one per studio. This will prevent EA from selling off the studio or shuttering it in the future.
