A couple other songs in the album take some too.
Basically what the album is about is every frustration sturgill has with celebrity, touring, record companies, and everythingthing else to do with the industry. He seems to express a want to just be a free man doing in his own thing. However, on one off note, in Sing Along - a song about an abusive relationship that decides that staying is more entertaining than leaving, he affirms that he still loves it.
If I had to pick two quotes off the album to describe it, it would be
"Living the dream makes a man wanna scream
Light a match and burn it all down
Head back home to the mountain"
"compromise is made out of peace, but history is made out of violence"

I am black and was raised on 50s, 60s 70s Pop, Rock, Soul and Country. I.was not a Sturgill fan until Netflix, so I was unaware of all the Nashville drama and angst over his 'style' and 'category'. My opinion, his 'category' is: GREAT MUSIC and SONGWRITING. PERIOD. I hope that helps. P.S., It somehow darkly reassuring that the country media scene is just as F*cked UP as pop rock soul and hip hop are. Corporate friggin America. gotta love it. (not really)

I don't like pop country, but blue grass, folk, the blues, have some awesome instrumentals and or songwriting. Older country has great story telling songs. Hell some of them I would call them original hip hop along the lines of Tupac and Nas. It's a similar evolution in how people take a style, simplify it, recycle simple lyrics and deploy it for the masses.

Vernon D.P. Well said, I too believe that “great music” is genre free. But that’s a subjective statement. Music industry across the board is soooo screwed up. Their is other “great music” out there. Cody Jinks, Tyler Childers couple country guys that get no love. & Soul (Al Green & Otis white offspring) check St Paul & the Broken Bones. Idk why they are not bigger. I’ll send ya a couple links.

    [Verse 1]
I got a haircut in Norway
When all the weight started pulling me down
Smelling like a waterlogged wet dog
    Ain't no way to travel
But as soon as I chopped it all off
It just grew back, thick and brown
I keep tugging on the thread
Hoping it all might come unraveled
I keep trying to throw it all away
But it comes right back around
    [Verse 2]
They come backstage and on my bus
    Pretending to be my friend
    Shaking hands behind grandstands
All wearing the same old grin
Oh, but none of them bother knocking
Oh, they all just come on in
Asking me what all my songs mean
Wonderin' if they're all about them
    [Chorus]
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention
    [Verse 3]
Living the dream makes a man wanna scream
Light a match and burn it all down
Head back home to the mountain
    Far away from the fool
Of all the journalists and sycophants wielding their brands
And all the traveling trophies and award show stands
And all the haters wishing they was in my band
Sorry boys, the bus is plumb full
    [Chorus]
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention
    [Instrumental]
    [Bridge]
And there's nothing for me outside this hotel room
    But another letdown, lonely day
Tour is almost over, and I'll be home soon
And it's all been done two or three times anyway
    [Chorus]
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention

Thought I was late to the game only to find out the album dropped the previous day. Never heard of Sturgill but wow, a day and a half of listening to all his music I'm a fan. Living in ATL I guess I'll be making a trip to Nashvegas to catch him live! Love Pandora and Sirus as they play artist and cuts you will never hear on the crappy FM genre stations. Man where I live all our FM stations play the same 80s rock and new wave poo and have been for the last 10 years, I think they got a bad deal..
1 pop station for the kids, 1 classical station for old conservatives (in America I believe theyd be known as the blue party.. the ones that openly dont give a damn about poor folks, not the ones that kinda low ball it)
I can hear the same whitesnake song on the radio at least 4 times a day, that stupid blue on black song from five finger death punch gets played relentlessly on the "heavy station", one day at work I heard the guy next to me listening to their station and that song came on 4 damn times in that whole day. I got fed up and jammed ear plugs in
For specifics the songs we have on FM are basically finger 11s paralyzed or one thing, the one previously mentioned and the same Metallica song, cant even remember the name but it's one of their slow ones
Hmm we also have the same sum 41 song on near repeat on the "punk" station
One station advertises playing the worlds "best ROOOOCK" and then proceeds to play Imagine Dragons
If it wasnt for my auxiliary cord in my car I would have Paul Walker'd my fucking self

@@TheHyde8875 He literally named his album "Metamodern Sounds In Country Music". It sounds like outlaw country music... Because it is. An artist rejecting the genre doesn't make them instantly apart from that genre.

Many of the great musicians are the ones who do exactly what they want with their music. When they make an album and it’s completely new from the last, when they don’t let people define their genre, nor the record labels put them in a box. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bon Iver ( to just name a few ) and yes, Sturgill. This album is rocking. Can’t wait to listen to it front to back.
