Music artists ain't making songs like this anymore. It's an extreme rarity to still have great artists like Sturgis. I fell in love with his whole album on netflix.
I decided to listen to Sound & Fury again earlier this week, and this track spoke to me more than anything, as it captures perfectly what I’ve been feeling since last week’s michegas. I’m becoming more insular, ready to raise all my drawbridges, and trust not another soul, knives out. You get yours, stay out of mine.
I knew of Sturgill before this album came out, but couldn’t point out a particular song of his. Then, before the pandemic, I saw this anime on Netflix and was absolutely confused. “Why is an outlaw country singer putting out an anime?!”. Did a little google search and saw it was a companion to this album. I was so impressed by that. That he completely switched direction and genres for a moment. AND put an anime out with it. This album is brilliant. His band is so incredibly talented and what they made here is nothing short of a classic that may take some time to really set it with the rest of the music world. Sturgill is one of my favorite success stories. Going to listen to this album all day today.
The first few times I heard this I interpreted it as a kind of defiant statement "Nobody knows their place" but after a while I started to see it as sympathetic, like everyone is struggling to find their place in the world.
Brother, I wish you knew what kind of hell you've gotten me through in the past seven years. Really glad to be living in the same era as you. Greatly appreciate you!
Why? Sturgill doesn't give a shit about you. He is a Blow hard, always was and always will be. he had a couple good songs when he started. This song is shit. just like the Album. He even said he doesn't care about fans. This adventure was only about himself. He took the money and ran. All while telling fans to fuck off. BLOW HARD.
Just discovered this today on Netflix and this song absolutely drew blood. Didn't pull a single punch. I know it was written before the pandemic, but it feels pretty damned raw after two years of isolation and losing some loved ones. Cried while watching it. This is a masterpiece.
sounds like a person thats not comfy at parties and sees the truth in people around them, and said person just wanna be home and make art in peace instead of making so called friends
Took some MDMA for PTSD treatment and watched the whole thing on Netflix while doing so. This one stuck with me. Thank you sir for sharing your art. You save lives.

I have skated some streets of my hometown at 5 a.m. with this on my headphones and to say that you have given all of us something to rely on so we can keep moving forward is just neccesary. Thank you for everything.

This is absolute my fave song of this album. Also the rollerskate girl searching for "tender" small items. Looks like a post-apocaliptic world. I am getting adicted to this package.
Some people seemed confused about the message within the song title. "Make art not Friends" in my mind, is kind of like saying speak your own thoughts rather than seeking acceptance. Being an artist is about being an individual and staying true to one's self via true expression, rather than making art to be branded and classified by a particular genre of fans. Solitude is the greatest muse of all. Create with the Creator. I too am an artist and I approve this message 😉
I feel like in a way it's about how the singer was hurt by someone who they thought was their friend, and decided to push away the people in his life. He can see that isolation is hurting him, but he tries to delude himself to thinking this reclusive lifestyle was the right choice. In a way, it also reflects how Covid affects people mentally. We have to push people away, we have to sacrifice socializing for safety, we have to stay home and make art, not friends.

I’d like to hear Sturgill do some songs with Dwight Yoakam. They share an adventurous creative style not common in country music, they are both originally from Kentucky, and they both crush it when playing Bluegrass music. Dwight’s songs with Ralph Stanley are kick ass. Sturgill’s Cuttin’ Grass albums’ kick ass.
So I vehemently dislike modern Country for sounding mostly same-y and formulaic, and my friend pitched Sturgill Simpson to me as a Country artist who reviewers complained was starting to stray from that formula or "Not staying true to Country", and so he kept making the music he wanted to make because fuck them. Gotta say, I like it.
I don't know if I would one hundred percent classify Sturgill as a country musician, but I share your feelings. The lyrics mean something instead of being generic rhythm to sustain a beat.

Lookin' out the window
At a world on fire
Flames see the end is near
Seen all the sights
Tired of the lights
So you can let me off right here
This town's getting crowded
Truth's been shrouded
Think it's time to change up the sound
Yeah, the wheels keep turning
The flames get higher
Another cycle rolls around
Face in the mirror's all skin and bone
Bloodshot eyes and a heart of stone
Never again, I'd rather be alone
Think I'm gonna just stay home
And make art, not friends
I love saying "No" to all the "Yes" men
Just to see the look on their face
I love how everybody knows what's best
But nobody knows their place
Sucker every second, stack 'em up to the sky
For every winner there's a hundred that die
So you get yours, stay out of mine
Here's to the memories, where do I sign?
Face in the mirror's all skin and bone
Bloodshot eyes and a heart of stone
Never again, I'd rather be alone
Think I'm gonna just stay home
And make art, not friends
Oh it's getting hard to find a good friend
So close the door behind you
Falling when more come in
Nobody writes, nobody calls
Nobody bother 'cause I'm over it all
Face in the mirror's all skin and bone
Bloodshot eyes and a heart of stone
Never again, I'd rather be alone
Think I'm gonna just stay home
Think about my friends
