Carnivore for half a decade and I’ve absolutely seen the cleaner I eat meaning just meat and water the better I feel. Eventually I couldn’t tolerate any dairy, coffee or salt. Now meat, eggs, seafood and water is all I have and doing amazing.

I had bad leg and foot cramps while losing weight on Keto and kept hearing “up your salt” but I had no relief from the leg cramps. I tried drink mixtures with ACV, lemon juice, salt and cream of Tartar. That didn’t help. I took Magnesium baths and that would help for only that night. I started talking magnesium pills and that helped somewhat but not totally. Then I heard Streak and Butter Gal say she felt better without salt, that if you’re having leg cramps it might be too much salt. OMG that is what I needed to hear. I’ve cut way back on the salt and my legs and feet haven’t cramped since!!! Thank you all for your experience and your willingness to share with us all.

Salt is an essential electrolyte. It's needed for the electrical systems in the body. Every cell runs on electricity. Be careful cutting salt. Without salt you will die. Research Hyponatremia.. salt deficiency. In the ER and ICU the sickest patients get a saline drip ... A salt water drip.

Great interview! BUT I have to slightly push back on not having salt thing. I agree some people can be getting way too much, but I know for me personally that when i don't supplement salt on my carnivore experience, I feel like complete trash. But i also work 10 to 12 hours a day at a warehouse, hard labor 5 to 6 days a week... And i work out pretty hard in the gym. I don't drink salt every day, but on the days that i feel super low (like today).... Trust and believe I'm drinking salt, and it does give me a slight boost. That's just my experience...

I have done the same thing, eaten too much salt and had to lay off but lately it seems like I can't do too much. I don't get any swelling or anything. And it seems like I just consume way too much. I can eat/drink up to two tablespoons of salt per day! I cut myself off if I get that much but I probably could take more! Maybe I'm just working hard like you said. I do bodyweight exercises and hiking along with Qigong besides working my heavy labor job five days a week.

I was suspicious that salt was contributing to my skin issues, and decided to stop using it. It took around a month for my body to adjust, but months later I’m still salt free and my skin is doing better now. Whenever I accidentally ingest salt my reaction is to spit it out and rinse my mouth out. It tastes terrible to me now.

This video is fantastic, and y'all are amazing! Salt has been a sticking point in my ZC journey from the beginning. I've been ZC for over 18 months, and in that time, I've done a fair amount of experimenting with salt. I find that salt is SUPER addictive to me, if I start, I have a hard time stopping, and it also causes me to retain a TON of water. I get extremely bloated if I eat salt. So, my default position is just to avoid it all together. It's hard with so many vocal folks all over the place talking about how important it is to consume a ton of salt, and constantly make sure you're on top of your electrolytes, but the simplicity of meat and water wins out for me. It makes more sense from an ancestral dietary perspective, it's simpler, and I feel so much better. Thank you both so much for all you've contributed to this community!

Love seeing and hearing these longtime carnivores! 30 seconds listening to their experience is worth more than hours of listening to twig munching, 20-something stick-figure, experts droning on about the benefits of broccoli sprouts by the bushel. I’ve been aware of Dana for some time, but first time I’ve seen her talk - OMG! Thanks for bringing her on Kelly! Keep convincing the other “old timers” (who look like they just came out of a time capsule!) to come on with you!
By the way, if you are dealing with blood pressure issues (like me), check out the good work being done by Dr. Rick Johnson at the University of Colorado concerning the connection between high blood concentration of salt, a liver gene expression in some people who have been subjected to high glucose, the liver production of an enzyme in these people that converts glucose to fructose (OMG!), fructose matabolism and high uric acid,, uric acid caused kidney inflammation, and high blood pressure. Fell out of my chair when I heard this on a recent interview with Peter Attia.
As a consequence of this and Dana’s experience, I’m now motivated to do an n=1 experiment with going no-added-salt! Thanks Kelly and Dana!

KetogenicGirl The Drive number 87, released January 6. Dr. Johnson’s book, The Fat Switch, which I picked up on Audible after the interview, also touches on this. However, he has new data since that book appeared. And, he did a better job highlighting the amazing parts of the puzzle in the interview - partly because Peter helped highlight some of it, and, frankly, partly because he refused to let Peter side track him from saying what he understands as the most important connections in this cascade. I’ve listened to the interview at least six times. This MAY be a missing piece - a back door of dysfunction separate from hyperinsulinemia- for some of us who are tightly controlling insulin, seeing major improvements, but still seeing unexplainable bouts of dysfunction. It MAY also explain the mechanism why “zero carb” has been such a powerful intervention for some very sick people, but may not be necessary for others. 🤔

I think one of the huge issues with salt is that most people, before going ZC, have eaten a huge amount of salt every day for years so their bodies are used to dealing with that excess. If they suddenly drop all extra salt, their bodies aren’t yet used to the need to conserve sodium and so continue to excrete too much.
So it’s no wonder that a lot of people feel terrible when they give up salt; and they then get the belief that they need a lot of salt. If, however, they tried to gradually wean themselves off salt - to give their bodies time to adapt - I am convinced that most, if not all, of them could eventually quit adding salt and feel just fine.

This is cool. I have been thinking about giving up salt for a while now but I have had issues with doing so. I am a two year Carnivore now and when I first went from Keto to Carnivore I cut out the salt and just eat meat and drank water. I felt terrible. It was the worst Keto Flu kinda thing ever! So I added salt and potassium back in and within two days felt superhuman! I went for six months before I tried quitting it again and got the leg cramps light headedness and everything else back. But I hung in there for a few weeks and only felt slightly better. So I added a little salt back and was fine other than the leg cramps and now cramped feet. I stayed with this for a while and then I had to add in way more salt and some potassium back in.I couldn't stand the constant cramps and pain any longer. It has been great since then and I feel great but I'm sure that I still shouldn't have to consume all of this salt. It's almost like my body needs more than most people or something. I will try to quit it again and see what happens but I am not sure if I can stay off of it. I too read what The Bear wrote and agree with what he said but I am having trouble with getting way from it.
Good luck to everyone out there who tries this. I hope that it works better for them than me. 😊

Taking potassium, magnesium & celtic salt has calmed it down quite a bit, but I've also started taking 1/4 t of salt in the morning & at night in addition to adding salt to all my water, just to keep from experiencing those horrible 5 a.m. leg calf cramps. Now I'm thinking it may be too much--I'm starting to gain weight and I don't feel as energetic as usual. 2 1/2 years ZC. I am deathly afraid of cutting salt altogether--the cramping is a NIGHTMARE.

It would be interesting to know the water sources for those who do and don’t use salt. We have a water filtration system to get all of the chemicals out, but it also takes out all minerals so we have to supplement with electrolytes. Dr Berry did an interview where he said that river water is full of minerals, so while it’s ancestrally true that cavemen didn’t carry salt shakers around, they probably got much more salt in ways we currently don’t. The salt debate is another great example of how this isn’t “one size fits all”, or even most. Thanks for the interview! Always inspiring 😊

Hey Kelly. Loving your channel! Thank you for doing this for the community. Anyway, I recently followed someone's advice to up my sodium intake because I wasn't feeling as energetic as I would have liked. (ZC 25 months) The end result was that within a week I felt like absolute garbage and my BP went way up; I felt quite unwell. So, I went back to my regular heavy salting of food, but no extra, and was back to normal (for me). After watching this video the first time I decided to stop adding any salt to my food at all, although I was still eating salty bacon, and I felt better still. Also, my BP got even lower than normal. However, I have missed the flavour of salt and am adding back in a small amount for enjoyment but I am intrigued by the notion that we might not need any extra salt, and that it might actually have some detrimental effects for some people. And of course I want the youthful look of Dana's skin as well! So, I'm keeping the salt on the low side and watching what happens. I'm going to file this info into the mental folder where I still wonder about additional vitamin C as well. :D

I'm guessing that age and metabolic status plays into the salt thing. I'm 64 and started keto (with very few vegs because of gut issues) July 9, 2020, and am gravitating toward carnivore. But I experienced many episodes of palpitations, tremors, tachycardia, and leg cramps (and toes curling) in the past year that was electrolyte imbalance. It didn't resolve until I supplemented with 2500+mg daily of potassium (in my drinking water) AND pink salt (and magnesium and other minerals). Potassium and sodium need a tight balance in our cells. I'm not sure what my issue is with that regulation, but for now I feel better with 1-1.5tsp of pink salt in food and water. If I drink plain water it tastes like nothing. So, this is totally individual and may change on the carnivore journey, but for now I need my salt.
Thank you Kelly for your videos and conversations with guests. Much appreciated! ❤️

People who eat low carb (which definitely includes carnivores), tend to become more insulin sensitive, which is a good thing. However, they tend to eliminate fluids more (pee) and along with that, they lose electrolytes, including sodium. This often results in symptoms such as leg cramps. In my case, besides getting leg cramps, I would get very thirsty in the middle of the night. Now, I lick a generous amount of Redmond Real Salt prior to going to sleep. That has helped me tremendously with the thirst problem and leg cramps. I also salt most of the food I eat. NOTE: I am not a carnivore but my diet largely consists of meat, and eggs (4 per day), along with some cheese and butter. The author of the book, "The Salt Fix" (you can google this) advocates that humans do indeed need salt.

ALOT of it, plus added it to my food. It seems the more I add the more I need. I put it in coffee, water, food...everything. it's become as addictive as my sugar was. I'm going to stop doing it and just season my food. I'm active and I do experience cramps in my legs when I dont supplement potassium and magnesium along with the sodium. It also, like all study of this type, does not consider the confounding factors, or the inaccuracies of the data. The problem with standard American diet is the carbs from grains and processed foods particularly. The point has been made, we have essential fatty acids and essential amino acids-there are NO essential carbs or salt.
I’m just eating what tastes good after 36 years of caloric restrictive, low fat, occasional meat NONSENSE dieting. Utter foolishness! I have NEVER been happier.

Tried just using nu-salt alone but it doesn't work I still get dehydrated/electrolyte lows. Not sure what to do about it. I'm eating to satiation drinking my water. I'll figure it out
I'd love to give my skin a better chance.

when I started Ive read you have to eat enough salt. Then I start struggling with swollen anckles.THen I stop a while and read a bit more about the process. When I start again, my mindset was different.I just didn't feel to use a lot of salt. After the first week I suddenly got leg pains during night and it stays on during daytime.I do drink a lot of water, perhaps it floods out too much electrolytes from my body? Will a magnesium supplement help to balance it out again?

i think as i transitioned away from carbs in the beginning the salt helped me a lot, but now two years in, now 90% carnivore, i can see not really needing it..the other day my hands were kinda puffy when i was walking my dogs and i did start adding salt to my water. thought it would help me poop more lol i poop just fine so i was just over doing it. Gonna try to go with out salt and see. thank fully im not one of those who deal with headaches but maybe its just a phase or hump to get over... Very interesting and great interview! thanks girls!

Did she also stop using the LMNT electrolytes? I bought them from her, because she always advocated to use them

    RIP Bear
I had wondered how inland groups of earlier hominids had obtained enough sodium in their diets, if we now have to add it.
So it seems that there is enough sodium in meat and we don’t need to add it.
    I sometimes get "puffy eyes".
I use salt, but will experiment with not using it, thanks

Great video! After watching this I have tried cutting down on my salt intake... Should I expect a withdrawal phase where I feel a bit foggy while adapting to lower salt intake or does this indicate it's not for me?

I think our bodies can adapt to having lower salt, but it may take a while, especially if we're coming from a standard diet. I'll have to give it a try. I've been using a lot of salt while fasting and it feels right, but I think if I eat 2x a day, carnivore, I would need far less.

hey! after you promoted the Zero Carb Health facebook group I immediately went over to request to be added. It's been 6 days and crickets. You mentioned Dana sits on the group all day long -- any reason why this could be? Usually I get accepted immediately for groups. Thought it was odd since you promoted it so much in this vid. Thanks!

I'm less than a week into carnivore, and the idea that you don't need salt is intriguing because that's all I have heard is, you need salt. Definitely food for thought. Thanks for reading, Carrie Spencer

It's okay to have a little. You may need it from time to time. You can use salt for other purposes, too. Like cleaning surfaces or melting snow in the winter driveway, lol.

ZC 1 year here, and no added salt. I feel like it dries me out too much and I feel super thirsty. I enjoy the taste of meat without it. Very, very rarely, if I feel like I need it - and if it pops into my head, I tend to think it's because my body needs it for whatever reason, since I don't even think about salting at any other time - then I will put the tiniest bit of pink salt or Celtic sea salt on my meat. But that's like maybe once a month or less?

On Carnivore if you want to look younger the trick is to eat a little more fat. Fat helps heal the damage on the skin like wrinkles and makes the skin look more full. Also you will find you tan better in the sun.

So glad to hear this. I am going to give salt up for a while and see how much of a difference it makes, since I am one of those who puts salt on everything and in my water. I still battle with elevated BP after a couple of years of carnivore and trying to get off medications for that because it keeps my blood glucose level high. So this will be interesting.

    • @KetogenicGirl
      @KetogenicGirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thomas Myers your BP will go down because of reduced blood plasma volume as water follows salt, if you’re on BP meds make sure to let your doctor know in case they will need to be adjusted rapidly😃

most people drink coffe, and coffe contains caffeine, and caffeine flushes sodium from your body. That is partly a reason for people that "need" added salt. If you do stop adding salt, you will probably need to drink less water, and it will take a few weeks for your body to get used to it. You'll likely feel bad for at least a few days when you do stop adding salt.

Was fatigued on carnivore two months in, saw steak and butter girl saying she doest need salt. Tried a three day experiment cutting it out. By day two I became really flat with fatigue. By day three added some salt to my water within hours I felt much better. Think I'm just one of those that need the salt. Salt nakes everything taste incredible too, bonus.
