It doesn’t matter where you start the race. Upfront or from the back..you’re going to have to deal with wrecking and whatnot. Do what you want to.

I strongly disagree about starting at the back for any rating gain. For 2 simple reasons. First all crashes will happen ahead of you and not behind so you'll have to get around cars going everywhere. Sometimes you'll be lucky for them staying off the track, most times you won't. Second because you'll be surrounded by lower skill drivers, who will then be less predictable as they will have different driving habits or landmarks, for example braking where you actually go flat, pushing up the risk of a collision.
The iRating gain is only impacted by the position you finish the race, and nothing else, so higher grid position will have on the long term better race results. In this race you found yourself in 6th position after 6 laps, and a 6s gap to 1st. If you qualified at the place you were theoretically supposed to land, ie 6th, the field ahead would have been much more packed, allowing you to potentially pass some of these drivers, which you couldn't do here.
To give a bit of credibility to my point, on iRacing I'm Théo Schleret, 5k driver on road and 3k on oval, in the sim since 2017 and raced a wide variety of cars and tracks, from MX-5 to LMDh and from Dover to the Nordschleife, and also played several other racing games during that period of time. It doesn't mean I'll necessarily be right, just that I can give astute advices thanks to my experience.

Too bad I can't afford iRacing or else I would love to follow along with this journey myself to become a professional iRacist. The most I can do is betting my times on tracks in assetto corsa

Just don't race...that is actually the key , which teaches you absolutely nothing , if anything, you become a danger to other drivers...it's absurd and iracing needs a better system, they could call it the accountability rule
