  • Halo Infinite’s gameplay is still one of my favorites in the series as far as gameplay goes. Unfortunately the gaming landscape is nothing like 2008.

Honestly I think as a massive fan of Halo, the lack of content killed this game for me and my friends. We obviously were spoiled with Reach and I know Halo 5 had 4 player co-op as well. So getting to Infinite and I can’t play the story with my friends or even just one? Hurt my experience a lot. I was like okay that kinda sucks but let me go check out the custom games and forge. Oh wait. There is no forge. And the custom games are basically just private lobbies for slayer. So yeah we could mess around with that for a while, but we need the thing that my friend group kept coming back for. Which for us is Living Dead. Or maybe we could play Grifball? Shotty Snipers? Those were amazing fun as well and they even cycle them in on MCC to this day so surely those would be in Infinite right? Or how about firefight? Thats a good time killer to do with friends. Nothing. BTB and Slayer. And don’t get me wrong, I enjoy some BTB every now and again. Fiesta is a nice mode as well to have fun with. But when that is your only casual mode? It doesn’t quite get the job done for me or my friend group. Playing any of those game modes and using the sort of “power” weapons of Halo like the Energy Sword, Grav Hammer, Sniper, and Shotgun was thrilling because of how rare it was to find them in most other places of the game. It’s what made all those modes the most fun for us! I have no shame in saying that after I finished the story, I just outright deleted Infinite. I loved the game, the combat, the guns, everything. But it didn’t have any of the features/game modes that actually brought me back every single day. The lessened customization and there being no “inheritor” helmet due to there being no rank or anything certainly hurt my experience some, but those are things that I could and have overlooked. But the true killer for me was that it just did not have any casual “have fun with your friends while you kill a bunch of stuff” modes

Agreed! The social element is what made halo such an incredible game. Sharing your highlights in file share, messaging "all friends and recent players" to join your infection game. Staying in social slayer matches and not knowing what you were going to get. The passion that went into forge custom maps that you could download through the game. As much as I like Infinite's gameplay, the soul of the game is gone.

I've recently just started playing Halo: Infinite again (since it launched) and I'm loving it. When I first downloaded the game when it launched, it was so boring because there were only 3 maps I believe? Not very many online modes or weapons either. Now that I've come back and it has forge, more modes, more maps, basically feels like a completed game - it's amazing haha. The only thing I absolutely hate about this game is the micro transactions and battle passes (WHY DOES EVERY GAME DO THIS?!). Not only do I not want to spend money every time a new cosmetic comes out, I don't want to grind out every single battle pass and unlock things I don't care about until I finally get that one thing I actually want. That's why I loved Reach so much, because even though you still had to grind, it was more optional and personal in what you unlocked and chose to spend credits on. This is the only thing I hate about Infinite, and most games in general nowadays. Other than that I think it's awesome.

I recently started playing it for the first time since 2021, and I have no clue what you’re talking about because nothing has really changed, if anything it’s gotten a bit worse. All of the old shit is now “vaulted” whatever the hell that means, they’re still charging $60 for the empty ass campaign, the menus still feel like they were designed to be navigated on a phone, half of the shit is still locked in the shop, the shop prices are still ridiculous, the returning Halo 3 maps feel almost fake or even soulless in a way I can’t quite nail down, I think it has to do with how the CallOfDuty-ified gameplay clashes with their old school Arena shooter design, a lot of the other new maps play like awful Halo 4 and 5 maps, the 10 original maps the game launched with still suck too, vehicles still handle like ass, the sandbox now is now even more bloated with same-y precision weapons due to the DMR being thrown in, weapon and vehicle spawns on maps are still randomized, there’s still that dumb ping ability that lets you see literally everything on the map besides the enemy players, they still haven’t restored classic Red vs Blue and instead we still have to deal with those awful looking outlines cluttering the HUD, and most importantly the latency is still just as bad as when I stopped playing 3 years ago, 3 fucking years they’ve had to fix their shit. The progression system is also still a fucking mess, I fucking hate these “battlepass” things that ever game has adopted, it’s just a boring linear ass progression system that’s been paygated, 50% of the shit in the battlepass are awful looking coatings, emblems and nameplates and background shit i’ll never use, those dumb weapon keychains that make them look like toys, or stupid challenge swaps that are literally useless, and even if you complete all of the passes you’ll still be missing tons of crap because it’s only available through the scummy microtransaction store. But hey at least the stuff you earn from the ass progression system looks cool, right? Nope, most of this stuff looks like shit i’d expect to see in Halo 4 and 5, hell i’d Even argue that Halo 5’s Seeker is no longer the ugliest helmet in the franchise, like who tf is wearing Grendel, Kawari, Oberon, Otomosho, Peaceweaver, our Security Gen 3? No one, literally everyone I see wears one of the helmets that was originally released for the MkV(b) core, the new MkIV helmet, sometimes MkVII or even Firefall, and VERY rarely do I see some weeb wearing one of the less atrocious looking Yorai helmets.

@@Slender_Man_186 I completely agree with you on the progression systems and armor haha. It really does take away a huge reason to even play the game. Why play if you have no purpose? Especially if you aren't willing to spend any money? I'm a much more casual player, and I don't play that often (usually once or twice a week for a few hours) so it's not as big of a deal to me, but it still is SUPER annoying and I wish I had more customization options. I also agree that a lot of the maps are confusing to play on, and don't have a great balance (I'm also trash, maybe that plays a part), but the Halo 3 maps are still fun to me. I'm just saying it feels way better than when it first launched, and I've had a lot of fun playing it with friends. Other than gameplay, yes I agree that the game is not the greatest, or very good. Most of 343's stuff I've hated, especially Halo 5 and the loot crate system. Don't even get me started on the design choices and art style LOL! They've been very experimental and for the most part, the armor looks horrible. It looks like they just took a toddlers drawing and just threw it into a 3D software. The only armor that looks good is the ones Bungie and Ensemble designed and 343 added to Infinite (Reach, Combat Evolved, and Halo Wars). It feels like they didn't even try to replicate the Halo feeling and style at all. They don't have any consistency. I feel like most games that do implement the battle passes are literally just designed to rot your brain and entice you to buy as much as possible, and it looks and feels horrible. The UI is also super frustrating and confusing to use.

Spot on. I just wish Infinite launched initially with what we have right now. The gameplay really is great, and it's awesome that the multiplayer is free to play - but I would take a $60 game if that meant that all of the normal features were included in the game and not catered for a battlepass to milk you each season.

Going back to basics was a double edge sword. Yes Halo CE had no repeat guns which infinite took inspiration from, but the halo 5 variants were fun and interesting like the Voids tear. They had no new big new game mode at launch I would have loved Banished vs Spartans one side defends a scarab the other attacks. The covenant breaches the Pillar of Autum the first wave the UNSC has turrets and overpowered weapons the second wave you're even, the last wave the covenant side gets hunters and a phantom providing cover fire and a short timer to win really making the last wave crazy. Didn't add female Spartans I guess making two sets of armor was too time consuming, It's clearly designed for men the armor fits loose on the female Spartans you could look up their chest armor because there is a 1-2 inch gap on the mark VII core because changing would break the game. The trailer graphics were amazing and showed off what the Series X was capable of and the game looks worse than Halo 4 at times with the weird lighting. The preperformance is bad for the visuals you get If I could run the game at 300fps then I can understand the lack of lack of quality explosions and lighting and lack of shadows without raytracing on Banished and Player models is sad compared to other shooters. The budget and time and the broken promises all make this game nearly unredeemable. I we got season 6 with the Falcon new Shotgun and the community BTB playlist fairer season pass I wouldn't be complaining.

Why is this video’s quality insane for having 400ish views?
EDIT: the sub count is 3x bigger, and I am now one of them.

The shift happened when the grind was a choice, to being a required job/chore. Gaming used to be fun, now it’s all about “balance” and “competitive play”. Halo was a party game with shooter elements first and foremost. Now it’s a run of the mill “competitive shooter”.
To show case in point of a game being made for the community and for the sake of fun; look no further than Lethal Company. It’s a ridiculously basic game that has people enjoying it to no end. The proximity chat reminded me of the halo 3 and reach days playing infection and hearing your buddy shit himself as someone came out of nowhere to infect him, all in game with echo and falloff as he was smacked off a ledge.
Games used to have a connecting fabric, that made you want to be in a community and enjoy it with others. Deep Rock Galactic is a great example of a game that HAS paid for cosmetics, but they aren’t forced onto you, the game gets plenty of free content, and tons of unlockables to enjoy.
Halo didn’t die because of the landscape. Halo died because it lost its soul. It no longer was the virtual couch that people would go to game with millions of others for a goofy game of trash man, or griffball, or speed halo. The nights spent replaying the campaign with friends just because or to find all the skulls. The time spent looking through peoples file shares while waiting for the lobby to populate. Partying up with a bunch of random people you just had a blast with and then adding them on Xbox live to continue gaming for years to come.
Halo missed its mark from the start, and lost the chance to have that again. Could they make a comeback? Not with infinite, as good as the gameplay may be, it doesn’t have the launch hype.

Awesome comment! Thanks for this. But yeah, the fact that I would have to pay just to make my spartan a simple color like red shouldn't have to cost money or be earned through a purchased battle pass. Infinite just feels like a shell of what made Halo incredible. The social element is completely removed - no one even talks anymore, but I guess you could argue this with most games nowadays. Partying up with people from your recent lobbies and playing custom games was so fun, now every lobby disbands 😥

@@bokey_1da they took away what connected us all as gamers. The community, the trash talking, the late night lobbies meeting people from the other side of the globe and continuing to game with them for years to come. Gaming today feels isolated and stale. Like you said, there’s no character to anything anymore. Customization used to expand player expression, every game trying to one up the last for how much personalization you could make for your own experience. Now it’s cookie cutter, pay to look a specific way, and only in the way we tell you that you can look.
The gaming days of old we know are long gone, but it’s gamers like us that will have to bring them back to what they were, and carry on those community efforts the corporate developers have deprived of us.
Keep on speaking the truth and making the best of moments with friends.

Yeah, the IP and the genre are old as shit. It never stood a chance. Anyway, never liked Halo - good riddance.
