Thank you for talking about this! It’s hard finding detailed information about tazarotene compared to tretinoin. Just started taz 0.1% cream and have been using tretinoin for over a year. Taz is definitely not irritating compared to tretinoin. Idk if it’s because taz is a 3rd generation retinoid compared to tret which is a 1st generation retinoid? I’ve also had people tell me that taz is less irritating but it can sneak up on you if you overuse it in the beginning since it shows little to no irritation on the skin. How true is that? Can you possibly do a video comparing 1st and 3rd gen retinoids and how they differ?
Thanks for your question. That is a great video idea. Might be considering it if I get more questions on it. But generally Yes! But more specifically because tretinoin has a high affinity for all 3 retinoic acid receptor subtypes. This is why it can be more irritating. Also, Taz has to become hydrolyzed into tazarotenic acid before it reaches the retinoic acid receptors. Making it a little more tolerable.

Hi Dr. Arsalan, I was just prescribed this by my dermatologist today, does this help with hyperpigmentation and dark spots and does it help with cell turnover as well? Love your video, it was very informative
Hey thank you for your question! Yes, it has been shown effective in post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and has been seen to help with cell turnover as well. Wishing the best success for you! :)

I used tazarotene gel 0.1% for 4 months daily no issues. Then my skin suddenly couldn’t tolerate it anymore which is weird :/ I’m back to tretinoin cuz it feels gentler but I wanna pump back up to taz any suggestions?
Apparently Tazarotene can sneak up like that. You could go months without any side effects and then the side effects show up later. Some say to just continue with it but moisturize more.
Hey doctor, do you think Tazarotene gel 0.1% would be good for facial keratosis Pilaris rubra? Could it completely unclog all the Kp on face since it is so powerful and used for plaque psoriasis? I also seen a study on KPRF about topical sirolimus 1% cream, but I also hear a 2% cream exists also. Is Aklief stronger than Tazarotene since it’s the newest on the market? Please reply kprf is a Devastating diagnosis!!
