Is Engaged Core Strength Important to Walk?

  • Walking is very complex! With over 206 bones, 600 muscles, and 360 joints (debatable depending on how you define a joint) there is a tremendous amount of complexity in human movement. There is no one size fits all approach. We each have uniquely shaped bodies, different-sized bones, and joints that are coordinated in their own particular way. We each learned to walk in our own unique way and have our own history of injuries and habits of organizing that are shaped by our environment and culture.
When we contract our core, we restrict the opportunity for movement in our body. Walking is a motor skill that is processed through the nervous system and brain, and it requires complex coordination and timing. However, if our core is contracted this essentially puts a corset or a constraint on the availability of movement to occur. We will limit our ability to flex, extend, side bend and rotate in the spine and pelvis.
A contracted core limits freedom of movement in walking. It doesn’t allow for forces to move up and through the spine clearly, and it reduces our ability to respond to uneven surfaces. This leads to inefficiency in our stride and parasitic over-contraction of muscles leaching you of your energy.
