  • I came by an oldtimer friend of mine who was in the middle of tearing it apart. I caused some confusion and continued my on way.
    Enjoy!

    A 1961 DKW Junior was my 5th car - in Minnesota, no less! Mine was all red, not two toned, and it had an ivory interior. For those who don't know, they were powered by a 750cc two stroke 3 cylinder engine, driving the front wheels, which had inboard drum brakes. Back in the 60s, the drivetrain was often used in single seat, open wheel Formula Junior race cars.
    I drove mine from Minnesota to Florida, staying off the interstates as much as possible (speed wasn't an issue, I simply wanted to see the country I was passing through).
    Somewhere in Indiana, I pulled off the road to eat lunch and watch a combine harvesting a field. It was about 2 miles away, and I noticed the driver was breaking his precise pattern... because he turned and was heading straight to me! If you know anything about the timing and the tiny profit margins in farming, you know this was no small deal. It probably took him 20 minutes to get that rig over to where I was, and then he got out and asked if I needed any help. I said no, just having lunch and watching him at work in the field. He also liked my car, and wondered when Chevrolet had built something that small. I told him what it was, and after a few minutes, he went back to work. To date, it was one of the nicest days, and most pleasant trips, I've ever had on the road.

    Dear Sirs.
    👍👌👏 Very well done (video and work). Congrats! Even more because this repair was definitely no small undertaking. 2) I absolutely love DKWs. This car, like so many others out of this era, looks like the tiny brother of one of those ginormous North American vehicles. Or maybe the prototype was simply washed too hot and therefore shrank!? 3) Bad Dürkheim is definitely my most favourite little town. Unfortunately I don't live there. Kloster Abtei Limburg is a nearly out of this world place for me respectively my personal kind of taste. Of course I also love the famous Pfälzer Wald, the special dialect, the food and the Ellwetritsche! 😁 ;-)
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health in particular. To both of you of course.

    My great grandfather imported a DKW Junior to Canada in 1960. It’s still in my family but it hasn’t been on the road in 40 years. It’s been stored in a garage since the fuel pump quit. Despite it not running it’s in perfect condition.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว

      A fuel pump ought to be a quick fix - I've heard they use some odd prinziple where intake vacuum is used to power the pump, but all in all, it looks like not too complicated a piece.
      If all else fails, just replace it with an electric one (should you want to see it on the road) :)

    • @sheldondyck8631
      @sheldondyck8631 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AstraWerke hopefully I can convince my uncle to find the original pump he removed years ago and let me try to fix it. I’ve been unsuccessful so far.

    Perhaps you should consider traveling with a portable car hoist at all times. I'm sure you've had more than your fair share of up close and personal encounters with cracked concrete garage floors!
    3:38 The front brakes are mounted INBOARD? What genius designed that? Someone who hates mechanics, apparently!
    Your friend lives in a beautiful location.
    Flower vase on the dashboard? Now THAT'S classy!
    I have to say though, judging from what's coming out the tailpipe, either the car IS a diesel or wants to BE a diesel!
    8:48 Speedo goes to 130 Km/hr? A wee bit optimistic, wouldn't you say?😉
    It's a cool little car. Very late50s/early 60s styling. Thanks for an interesting video and ride along!

    Was one-coil-per-plug typical of two-stroke engines of this era or was it specific to DKW?

    • @AstraWerke

      I know that Trabant, Wartburg and IFA used only one coil, so I'll go with "It's DKW specific" - but don't nail me down on that one.

    Ah-hah! I finally have an English speaking German person to ask an IMPORTANT question:
    At 4:39 - why do German beer glasses have lids?! AFAIK no other nation does this!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Against flies and other insects, I reckon :)

    • @lxaegg
      @lxaegg ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My grandparents told me the lid is to keep out insects, but also for people who are drunk so they dont spill theyr beer if they cant hold the glass still anymore. They had glasses from pubs with rather heavy lids and o rings, that they had stolen back in the day from pubs.
      Im not sure if i remember corecrly, but i think they also had one with a springloaded lid.
      Since germany has lost both wars they started, there were a lot of people that had ptsd etc. who would regulary numb theyr feelings with alcohol after both wars. Oftentimes past the point of beeing drunk.
      Most of the times Beer was the drink of choice to do it. So a lid was put on the beer glasses in pubs so you dont spill as much of the beer.
      Not a bad idea i suppose.
      Now it has turned into kind of a tradition, and germany is known for having beer glasses with lids.

    Correct me if i am wrong, is the mixture rich in order to prolong engine life ?

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a two-stroke engine, so it runs on a 40:1 mix of fuel and oil. This is especially evident with the engine cold and the choke pulled.
