(A) Maintain Ballistic Advantage - staying far enough away the other guy can't easily shoot you, while you still are in range to effectively engage targets, and (B) Never Leave a Trace - which is hammered home to use in Sniper School, not even a footprint if you can help it, definitely NOT a cheeseburger wrapper.

I forget which book, (30 years!), but the one where Ding and his crew are doing aircraft terrorist training, Clark puts himself in the live fire portion as a "civilian". Live rounds are used. He is so confident in Ding's skill, he trusts him with his life, in a training scenario. It is a very badass scene. Suffice it to say, in all of fiction, there isn't anyone more badass (in a reality based story), than Ding Chavez.

Actually during the sniper course, you never get that close to the target. This is a movie! Depending on the evaluation and degree of difficulty of target assignmet, and if there are multiply targets. I have had to low crawl for over 500 yds. just to get to my first shooting position unnoticed before even firing the first round! And the range to target was over 800 yds. You have ingress to shooting position, and normally two egress positions. And this requires mostly low crawl, peeing laying down, drinking water laying down, being motionless for hours. Like I said before you were watching a movie. A real marine sniper you will never see him. And deadly at over 1,000 yds to target. The course lasted three months. We started out with about 45 marines. After the first week, we lost 12-15. The second week during the rainy season at kbay, we lost about another 10-12. It is very demanding, you learn much more then just shooting the weapon. I have been biten by bugs, eaten by ants, even a dam snake crawled up to me! The ability to blend in with the vegeatation, to move without being seen, to be motionless when the evaluater is looking straight at you with binos. And not move anything on your body. I am talking for like 10-20 minutes. Then after you shoot the target, he looks back at your location, and still cannot see you. You still have to egress, without him seeing you do this!

He most probably had a .308 and the splatter from that 175 grain round against the humanoid AR-500 plate would have been horrific. Added to that is the "Hollywood silencer" READ: suppressor.
