STRAIGHT FLUSH vs. NUT FLUSH!!! How To Know When You're Beat

  • Sometimes in poker, you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, and know when to check/call small bets so as not to arouse suspicion that you can see everyone's hole cards. In this hand, Mike Postle (aka GOD) somehow manages to lose the minimum with an ace-high flush. What a player!

I would of gone broke on Zynga poker then chucked my phone. This guy knows he has to call to cover his ass but also knows it’s a losing move. The commentator is clearly in on it and does not even realise that mike has to call. You can see him thinking that’s my cut of the profits you are throwing away, not even really thinking about how folding would look.

Pairing, though, is something you often want when you have a nut flush, as you're more likely to get callers on the turn. Also, the fact that the straight was possible on the river, means you're going to get more hero callers. These sort of turn/rivers allow for more value bets, and the odds of being beat are SO low (although in this case, he was beat by the absolute nuts!)

if it isnt all suspicious enough already, there's an extremely damning piece of info you didn't mention. When you have the nut flush here and just flat a 1/3rd pot river bet, don't you just flick in one chip, confidently flip over your hand and look to not slow roll your opponent when you almost always have the best of it? But no, Postle puts in the $140 instead of just flicking in a chip to signify the call (an indication he knows he is beat) and then holds his cards so his opponent can show and he can muck without revealing immediately to the table that he just called on that river with that hand. When you know what people have you absolutely shouldn't play your edges preflop. They could call or shove and then you'd have 60-70% to win a big pot, when you could instead play a lot more hands in small pots and reach rivers, where you'll have 100%, or you'll know that they have a better hand that they are likely to fold to pressure.

Im not a lawyer but I pointed this out before.
People are taking him to court, but his win rate, though godly, could technically be possible. It may be in the 1/10,000,000+ range but still, there have been more than 10 million poker players. This would have happened at some point. Maybe a few times.
But it's HOW he's won this much and where which is definitely cheating. Stuff like this happening hundreds of times is why this is virtually impossible.
You'd need some amazing expert witnesses and no witnesses on postles side to get him in court, or you're gonna have to explain game theory and some of these hands and how ludicrous they are to a jury. Which isn't gonna be easy.
Someone else was found to be cheating via stats. I don't know if his case is solid for this though. Mike only played 6k hands. We haven't got anything solid on him - just theories and speculations.
Some of the hands joey brings up could work. But yeahh... can lawyers clarify this?

One possibility is he could have an RIF reader on his key chain or some other part of him. Might be able to some how pick up the cards flying around the table due to a pre-game scan of the deck and entry or something. If someone was helping, they could provide the codes and responding cards on a simple spreadsheet. Device communicates with his phone, he gets the serial #'s and either converts in using a program or just knows them. I wonder if you could do this with some sort of shopping/shipping RIF scanner piece. Some inventory control uses that system to track stuff that gets picked up and moved. Some sort of system like that on his keychain or persons otherwise (sleeves, hat, idk) that shows the data on his phone and a spreadsheet with the cards converting #'s would make it work.

It would be a huge edge, but you might not make a lot of money if you have to cut in the commentators/owners etc. If they're all in on it he has to cheat big.

john meilleur I thought about this. The other consideration is that there is a fixed cost of cheating - somebody could find the stream relay, see your phone, etc. so you need enough benefit to cover both the marginal costs of cheating each hand, as well as the fixed setup costs. So I initially thought as you did, but after further reflection it’s not as clear to me what the optimal cheating frequency would be.
I’d love to see a video on what Postle’s strategy ought to have been.

Mike Postle is the greatest of all time and I want to one day play with the same level reading abilities and psychological skills and develop his uncanny instincts.

The show had hard time bringing celebrities, so the producers decided to "manufacture" their own poker celebrity .. like all those fake reality shows on tv. Hopefully they didn't charge the losing players.
I wish they casted Matt Damon. I would have definitely watched all the episodes 😉

The check river was suspicious and no commentators pointed out this. I think postle found out after betting on the turn that he was up against the straight flush by staring at his crouch.

ON THE TURN ,LOOK HOW POSTLE LOWERS THE BRIM OF HIS HAT RIGHT BEFORE HE CHECKS THE CROCH CAM AND AFTER HE LOOKS AT HIS CROTCH HE LOOKS UP AND IS VISIBILY UPSET CUZ HE KNOWS HES BEAT ... THE BODY LANGUAGE COMBINED WITH THE PLAY IS JUST GUILTY ALL DAY!

He would probably do okay. It's not like they found a losing poker player and started cheating. He was probably a positive player before he started doing this. Just not winning like this of course like Tyler said.

He's a decent player. I do believe him when he says he was a winner on UB and poker is his main income. You can tell in his bet sizes that when he wants a call he knows the math to get calls. He's clearly a wining player that found an edge to always win.
