I did a COMPLETE small block rebuild a few years ago following the lead of David Vizard. I followed all his suggestions EXCEPT rebuilding the points-type distributor. I wen't aftermarket electronic. It was fun and it ran GREAT.
HELLO MR DUKE FROM HOLLYWOOD ! It's Joseph from Hyundai ! Huwaida showed me your channel, SUPER cool !! fun fact: I rebuilt my 2011 forester from random youtube videos, prior to that all I had done was change a battery and alternator. cheers !
I just drag mine down the street for a half mile or so. If the block is really out of spec, I make my wife ride on top wearing a bikini and a cowboy hat.
Also how old school is this now days they have X ray machines which can check for the smallest cracks ,but only those who can afford it ? also acid dipping is the only way to remove everything and then do the rest honning and decking and installing the Welsh plugs and always use brass types or even better stainless steel if you can get them ?
Was just curious why they torqued on a torque plate.....but then show them honing the block without it. Then a little bit later the torque plate is back on while they are honing it?
....machine shop seems to be mandatory for rebuild, so you are not really "rebuilding it yourself". machine shop =lots of $$. That's why I say it is better to:(1)-remove engine, (2)-order longblock(with a warranty)(3)-remove accessories from old engine and turn in for a core, (4)-bolt everything on the longblock, re-install in car, hook up everything, and go. Still better, If you can afford it, buy a crate engine. Unless you have a machine shop yourself, forget rebuilding an engine yourself, unless it is a very rare or desireable engine.....
I’d have bolted up a dummy pump to the rear main when line honing. I’ve seen them distort .0015” with the pump installed. I prefer to use torque plates when honing as well, in all applications. I get that this is a stock rebuild since several operations were skipped, but those two are pretty beneficial.
Yes, in fact the remaining episodes that were deleted are being uploaded right now which include the bottom and top end rebuild episodes. We have one more in post-production after those two.
sorry... that's not a cold air intake!!! it is breathing hot under hood air. It changes all the fuel trim. The original air cleaner was really a "cold air intake" People don't get it
Reading a hand held gauge is a skill. No two people will get exactly the same reading. Only way to get accuracy is to remove the human error component but that means more money for a system like Reneshaw. It is worth the money if youncan afford it. Its a must for some, like jet engine manufacturing.
sir I would like to know if gm 4.3 liter heads, casting number 14099064 with the eyebrows will work on an engine with the TBI intake set up.. the 4.3 engines are very confusing from so many changes over the years.. I have a 93 block. I have read that the 14099064 heads were an improved flow head, designed to be used with the CPI fuel injection system. I also read that some of these heads were used in the higher output K series and W series engines with the TBI set up.. I dont want to waste a set of head gaskets if these heads will not work with my TBI intake set up.. thanks
I always install and torque up a dummy pump to the rear main before line honing. It distorts the rear cap up to .002” on some. Cam tunnel needs to be checked/indexed and corrected if needed, before the decks can be cut from that and the main datum lines. Stripping the block before cleaning is mandatory in our shop.
Just discovered your series of videos! Stayed up till 4am watching as many as I could. I must say, you remind me of my old teacher in school. You seem like the nicest of guys & really easy to get along with. Hope all goes well, you have a new subscriber also! Love from Australia!
did you use machinist's straightedge on crank journal to see if it needed line boring?most chev v8 need boring cyls .30 .the size of ridge is good indication of cyl bore wear. i wonder if honing will straighten out bore enough. clarence
When he is honing the mains, what keeps the hone in the perfectly horizontal plane, if there is no support on the end of the hone, through the last main? Thanks!
II have watched several videos on dis assembling a lifter. Everyone does it pretty much the same way, and it works very effectively for everyone. EXCEPT ME ! The piston inside my lifters, will NOT come out. In have tried all the tricks I have seen, like pushing the check ball down to relieve suction. I even tried heating the lifter up a bit, based on the simple premise that air expands when heated. That didn't work either. I thought maybe I just had a stubborn lifter. I tried 3 more. Same thing. I am at a loss. Do I simply need new lifters? Thank You
NOW under pressure ( via specialised ACID )you have the oil and water guides opened up a little more, think how much they will cost and using the right acid and time line to make sure the right amount of surface is removed and then you have the right cooling and oil transfer, which is what you need to do, especially if your going to add a hi pressure oil pump and hi pressure water or pump ?
As far as the spark plug commercial you plugs will only give out what your coil puts out and if you change from standard plugs to hi end Iridium or Platinum plugs is when you will notice the difference compared to say NGK V groves, especially in NEW cars with complex and hi or independant coil packs ?
What about blueprinting and full balancing, which is the most important aspect of rebuilds, even single nut and bolt done to OE tuque settings and all parts are balanced and weights are all 100% the same, everything including lifters ? Springs and retainers ?
if you bore a cylinder head. how do you know what size head gasket you should use? also i heard that if you want to put extra hp in it then you should deck the surface where the gasket meets the engine. is this all true?
i have a 1988 chevy caprice and i got a 5.7 vortec motor out of a 95 gmc suburban i want to put in the caprice, what can i do to the 5.7 to give it some more power and what would be a good transmission to go with?
You are absolutely correct Tom. And if you're ultimately attaching the pump with a stud when assembling, it should be torqued in this fashion as well with a stud. T.S. RACING 🇺🇸🏍🇺🇸

i keep hearing things about e3 plugs but when i went online ppl where saying they had problems with them it seems that they might not be as reliable. what your opinion cause all the reviews have made me hesitant with using them.
Hi, i have a 1973 IKA-Renault Torino TS with a 3.77 Liter, inline 6 engine. I would like to change the sparkplugs for some E3's, but I am located in Argentina. Do you know if it is possible to get them here? Also, if you have any tips on how to upgrade the performance on this car it would be really appreciated. Keep up the videos, love the show.

I had crowner in my engine for few years. Then one of the loop end up worn out. I took the engine completely part and discovered a lot of metal scraps everywhere. I brought new Thumper cam instead of crowner. Rebuild whole thing. You name it. I'm loving Thumper cam better than crowner. Crowner is pretty good but Thumper is better.. At least for me.
Also you should always bore with a head plate for the same reason. You would be surprised by how much torque causes interference. And if you really want your engine blueprinted this is a necessary.
My Fiance's Friend Has a 1990 Honda Prelude 2.1Si (B21) Cylinder #1 in th head has one of the valves blocked with what looks to be Aluminum like it was Casted that way. Is that Normal?
Get the block cleaned and checked for integrity, purchase correct rotating assembly components, get the block machined to fit your new parts. It is much less expensive and provides a better result to machine the block to size for the parts.
Sturm geschutz not sure what pistons you use but they are measured 90 degrees from the pin hole below the oil control ring groves or anywhere above that. maybe you use cast pistons?
I work with two guys who have built cars in the past, eveything from casting thier own moulds for the engines to the interior and one of the first things both have said is that pistons are not round and one guy said he found out the hard way by turning the pistons for his bike down in a lathe.
oh, and K&N air filters are problematic junk!! if you can read a newspaper through it, it's not filtering air and the oil is not supposed to be in the intake system. They were designed for carbureted race cars. not delicate computer controlled cars!
You should always mock up the oil pump on the rear cap. It will always pull the back cap out of round, because you are tourqeing 50 pounds on that cap. Witch will usually pull that cap out of round by about .0007
I understand the need for any competent engine builder, to check everything before it goes together. Other than that principle, when one buys a Eagle crank, it's probably costing a grand or more. It should come out of their factory right on the money, so why the need to check every main/rod journal again? Is it just habit, or personal preference? Personally, I would still check every one, because there is the outside chance one or more could be off. Just wondering, thanks.
Hugh Jass Too bad it's not even technically a hemi anymore. Also, a 2015 Chevy 6.2L Has 420HP and 460lb-ft torque. Ford is only 10HP short @385, but with a smaller engine (5.0 rather than Dodge 5.7 "Hemi").
hayden12w3 My Chevy 496 pulls my 30'RV with no difficulty and I believe it puts out 375 hp. My racing buddy wanted me to store my RV at his house so he could steal the engine.... I love this engine.
They didn't bore over any because they didn't want to. Usually if you see pistons rubbing on the wall you should bore it out at least .010, but being at the .030 they didn't want to push it and lose reliability, with most engines you can get more out of it but those walls are getting mighty thin between the pistons!

Great video. But for some reason, I couldn't get pass the first 5 secs.

I machine Chevy 350s with a rasp, a file, and garden hose for clean-up.

When you line hone a engine do you have to put oversized bearings or bigger crank anything like that?
Got a 350 from a Chevy van. Plan is to bore it out and built a racing motor. Gonna put it in a nova.

Lot of work for a 2 bolt main block.
Why not start with a 4 bolt.
cost.
considering the cost of the internals and entire engine build the upgrade to 4 bolt main is nominal.
Not for a tv show.
+Banjo-Boy-Montreal 4bolt isn't necessary in most applications.
2 bolt blocks are actually stronger than 4 bolt blocks
+Banjo-Boy-Montreal 2 bolt blocks are lighter. We always ran 2 bolt blocks in our street stock.

so i should have pistons and crank before i take it to get it machined? or can i take it and then buy pistons and crank
You can machine it first then get a spec sheet from the shop and go buy a new crank and Pistons
Get the block cleaned and checked for integrity, purchase correct rotating assembly components, get the block machined to fit your new parts.
It is much less expensive and provides a better result to machine the block to size for the parts.
Pistons are slightly eliptical, relationship between material and expansion under heat, so do you measure the bigger diameter or?
pistons are not elliptical, the skirt might be, the top is not
The skirtnis eliptical, im not sure about the top, but the skirt is where you measure the piston from as the top is slightly tapered.
Sturm geschutz not sure what pistons you use but they are measured 90 degrees from the pin hole below the oil control ring groves or anywhere above that. maybe you use cast pistons?

How much to have a shop machine a block like this
Ill take her to my machine shop

Why would we remove a noisy garage door opener to replace it with one that beeps even louder?
Anyone else notice the honing without the mentioned torque plate?
And no pump dummy mounted up when line honing.
Just sprinkle some pepper to check for cracks

why wait to remove the cam bearings?

So why was the torque plate not on when they showed the honing process?
but they didn't show boring the cylinders
They didn't bore over any because they didn't want to.
