    always, always, always remove torqued bolts in a reverse pattern. The heads torque down from the center to the outside, so removal should be from the outside to the inside. This helps prevent warpage.

    NEVER use Steel anything to pound out Pistons. Cut 1.5 inch lengths of 3/8 Fuel line and slip over rod studs BEFORE using a Wooden Dowel to push Pistons out... Mark rods so you can put them back in "clocked" properly....

    There's one thing you left out, though; all rod caps need to be numbered, and upon reassembly, they need to go back on their respective rods in the same orientation. The only time this isn't applicable is if the rod bores are going to be machined.

    My wife worked in the Oldsmobile engine plant, I worked in the attached next building. She operated the machine that honed the bolt holes (11:40) to a high tolerance. All of the force of the gasoline explosion which propels the automobile forward runs through those bolts, and there must be no slop, or the wriggling of the bolts within those holes will destroy the engine way before it should wear out.

    This is my 1st video of yours I've seen and I'm already hooked and going to follow your Facebook page too. My buddy's dad passed away and he had a 93' Silverado with a 350 that his mom had to sell so she gave me the family discount of $500. It's rusted to beat hell but only has about 240,000 miles and runs perfect with the exception of leaking a little oil which is obviously very common in trucks that old. I have a 2000 Silverado for my primary vehicle so I want to use the 93' as more of a project truck and thought about rebuilding the engine so I thought I'd look up a video on how to do it since the only engine I've ever rebuilt was a lawnmower engine in 12th grade shop class. And I came across this video and like the way you put it together and explained everything. All I really need is the engine stand and a couple of those pullers. I can rent the hoist from this place down the block. I can't wait to dive deep into your other videos. Keep up the good work.

    Hey Chris , Can I give you a little tip for what it is worth, When I strip an engine I usually mark the Rod Caps & Mains 1 through 8 etc, set them aside numbered so they are all clear of the crank. Then you can lift the crank clear and punch all the Rods and pistons clear with a soft mallet rather than trying to poke each Piston clear in turn with the crank in place.
    After this loose reassemble the rods etc after prior to cold or hot acid cleaning treatment and your ready for inspection :) .

    #2 That is unless the rods are to be replaced with new ones. I know the mains were honed but I've seen some that were put back in mixed positions were a lot of metal had to be removed to realign them or they had to be replaced. I've used number stamps to mark them, mains 1 - 5. The rods marked #1 piston rod 1 & cap 1 the same for the rest in position order. Without doing that your in for trouble later on. Good videos & tips though. I'm getting ready to restore my 68 Camaro & the updates help.

    When rebuilding an engine, do you absolutely have to machine the block? I want to tear down my 350 and replace all the bearings and gaskets and piston rings along with adding a performance cam. But do you have to machine the block?

    Does that number have to be in the same spot on top of the Piston where it shows how much the engine block was bored out to over stock

  • @denco28
    @denco28 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Yeah, that is the 73-87 body style. It's probably a '79 and that is the original engine for the truck.

      nope 73-87 utilized the 250 and 292 straight six as a standard

    Should have emphasized numbering and keeping location. also to check for a ridge on the cylinders that would need to be removed before the piston.

    Question, If you take the crank to the machine shop and get it fixed up, you said you will need newer thicker bearings. Do you mean new bearings that are subsequently going to be thicker or do you mean you actually will have to get a measurement and get thicker bearings to compensate for the refinished crank?

    69 was the first year for aluminum being used for the engine block in the corvette. Not saying it didn't also come with a iron option just thay the camaro and corvette came with aluminum engines from 69 and on

      take a 400 slow very slow its not like a 350 you need to do different rods and drill steam holes in newer heads

    • @jdrok5026
      @jdrok5026 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if its a 69 it could be a 402 which again different rotational assembly better stuff they will puke the bottom end out if ran to its limits for to long

    Isn't it pretty much standard to replace the pistons no matter what, especially if you have the block remachined?

    3970010 i came to determine many years back was so widely used from 327 to 350's, 2 bolt mains to 4 bolt mains that the best way to describe it is a factory 4" bore sbc.. The numbers out front on the left side he used paint on usually tell the truth. These blocks were made as 2 bolt mains and modified to 4bolt for certain applications.
    People swear they are all 4bolts but the only Guarantee is its a factor 4" bore block.

    • @jdrok5026
      @jdrok5026 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 bolts are a better platform for performance splayed 4 bolt main caps are stronger then stock 4 bolt mains so yeah

    i have a question,.. the identification number on the front of the block,.... if it isnt there what does that usually mean? the block was rebuilt or re machined? or is it a generic block?

  • @scottyperinn
    @scottyperinn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's what i noticed too, then when i saw those aftermarket pistons and i thought... .030 over prolly. so i figured someones been into that block before and the caps are already stamped.

    Milky oil in the pan but not in the filter? Did these people add coolant to the oil after they took the motor out or something? Seems peculiar.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sat in a salvage yard or somewhere for years. Rain, humidity etc got into the pan. The filter area is better sealed if the engine is sitting out in the elements.
