    In this video, we take a look at the tried and true HobbyZone Mini Apprentice S 1.2m RTF (ready to fly) rc airplane. You can also pick this rc plane up as a BNF (bind and fly) meaning it comes with a Spektrum receiver (Rx) and you will need you own transmitter (Tx). We give build tips and tricks, plus share some knowledge about the hobby. We also teach you how to bind this to the transmitter and make sure the controls are correct. We hope this video not only teaches you how to build this plane, but helps you along the way to becoming a knowledgeable rc plane pilot! Leave any questions or comments in the description box.

    Happy new year. It's not a crash, it's an unintentional, unplanned, spotlanding.

      It’s not the unintentional, unplanned, spot landing that worries me; it’s the rapid, unscheduled disassembly... 😉

    I've been out of the hobby for just about 20 years now and now my son is at the age of properly getting into the hobby. This plane and set up is going to be of such tremendous help to both of us. This video was incredibly helpful. So much has changed in the hobby it is truly extraordinary.

    I have the mini apprentice an have flown it a few times. I saw a tip in the You Tube channel by “RC Instructor” to measure the center point on the front and back wing and similar center point on the fuselage. As you put the wing on at the field, you have reference points to make sure the wing is centered on the fuselage every time as you put on the rubber bands. When you have the trimming done, the plane “is supposed to be” consistent from flight to flight.

    This is one I was considering on, but then I saw someone take a tape and show the measurements of the Sport Cub and I decided on that one. Made a comment on Gary's channel that I tried it in the two lots behind me, too small of an area(at least for a first timer) Going to have to go to our neighbors (next town) at the park and try it out there. When I did have it up in the air though, it was fun!maybe when I get the hang of this one and want to move up to a bigger plane, maybe, the Carbon Cub will still be available to purchase.

    Will you be discussing in this beginner's series the new proposed FAA regulations for model aircraft? I think you should so that those of us new to RC flying can make a more informed decision about/before jumping into the flying segment of the RC hobby. Thanks.

    • @ab7rs
      @ab7rs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      why not wait until there are new regulations...not just proposals?

    • @BillKisel
      @BillKisel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ab7rs Tracy, I'm not sure whether your question is directed to the Saylors or me... [Thumbs up for your reply either way!]
      If it is for me my answer is that being informed about the proposals - even before they might become regulations - will have you be a more informed RC hobbyist. For example, if I were to get into the hobby today I would not purchase an RC plane weighing over 0.55 pounds based on what I've learned over the past several days concerning the proposed regulations. Also, learning about the proposed regulations now allows a hobbyist to voice their opinions about the proposed regulations before they become regulations; even actively supporting or opposing them. IMHO, really BIG changes are coming to the flying (plane and drone) segment of the RC hobby and folks are better off informed than not informed.
      The Saylors are two mature adults that know how they want to run their channel. If they see my question they are of course free to answer or ignore.

    • @ab7rs
      @ab7rs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BillKisel my reply was to whoever would listen, it was really just a cry of frustration. I'm a fairly new pilot of 5 years (62 years old). I have been trying to keep up with the rules and for the most part obey them. a couple of things frustrate me:
      the rules and/or proposals change way too often, I went from registering for $5 to having my money refunded to not caring as I hear about different entities voice their opinions about what should be law. The latest NPRM scares the heck out of me and if implemented in it's entirety would destroy the hobby part of RC.
      Also the rules have always been way too much of a broad brush,applying to everyone everywhere.
      I fly some sailplanes, often up to 1,200 feet and have been told by those in the hobby and without that 400' was the limit....I don't believe it was, I guess we should all at least know the rules. I pay attention to where I do this.
      I also fly some long-range FPV fixed wing 1-3 miles and without line of sight or a spotter that has always been a no no. I use common sense and have a return to launch function. Again, I pay attention to where I do this.
      I like how some of the higher powered VTXs say an amateur radio license is required but then the FCC regulations prohibit a "ham" from controlling a craft in that manner.
      I applaud your willingness to keep up the fight but I'm too tired, I just want to have a little fun. I hope it all settles out but I'm going to keep on flying with common sense and quit when I can't buy a new plane without it being tracked.
      The latest episode of RC roundtable podcast has some excellent views on the subject....with an AMA rep.

    • @BillKisel
      @BillKisel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ab7rs I hear you Tracy. I'm 75 years old and was/am just interested in doing some fun flying on/over my own property and maybe joining the local flying club for some fellowship. However, if it turns out that I have to register planes and pay fees and have a WiFi connection for the plane and transmitter I'm just not going to bother. I'll simply invest more time and money into the hobbies I already have established and am enjoying.
      Whatever shakes out I hope it doesn't destroy or cripple the hobby. As a kid, back in the fifties, I and my brothers were into making and flying control-line model airplanes. Interest in the hobby then led me to go to Aviation HS in NYC and from there into the Marine Corps where I had the privilege of working on F4 Phantoms (USMC 1962-1964). Take care...

    can i buy this plane as a BNF and then buy a radio with more channels for future use on more complicated planes and still be able to use the "safe fly" and "panic recovery". If so which radio do you recommend? To me it seems a bit of a waste to buy the RTF with a 4 channel radio that will not be used on more advanced airplanes.
    Thanks for taking your time to explain all this to beginners.

    13:45 isn't it because you have a normal and a reversed servo? Thus it does not matter if you swap the wires when connecting the wing as they will do the opposite of each other. I have this plane for almost 2 years now. Was my first, learned to fly on my own and has only a few minor scratches. That's quality! For the stretchers, use baby powder to keep them in good condition when not flying and always take them off when you are storing the plane. They should only be on there when you go out flying. Always used 4 with loops etc, never got one failed mid flight ;).

    Just curious if you guys have flown the larger apprentice yet? I searched through videos, but didn't see it. I'm considering either that plane or the Aeroscout S that seems like a good trainer. I like some of the features of the larger apprentice, but have heard mixed reviews for the reliability of the "virtual" fence gps feature. Several years ago I got the little starter cub (the yellow one that's under 100), but like the idiot I am tried the first flight in a bit of wind and lost orientation. I want to try again, but I'm looking for easiest to fly/train. Thanks for all the informative videos, learned a lot from you already!!

    Sorry to bother you with a question like this but I have purchased this also. I am in need of a prop but the HobbyZone website says it's been discontinued. Can you make a recommend a replacement prop or some other supplier. Thanks. I enjoy your channel so much and is why I got interested in the plane as a starter for myself.

    I really want to replace my Apprentice but in this size, I can fly it behind the house. I am not sure. I want one, but then again, I want something different too.

    Will an 11.1v 3200mah battery work in this?(if it even fits) the same battery the regular apprentice S uses.

    My question is when I buy a RC plain and is PNP version, not BNF version the receiver I choose already come with Safe Select and AS3X technology with in. I'm new with RC airplanes my hobby was Drones but I think airplanes is more fun. With Drones I have to program the betafly program or clearly program airplanes is not like that. That is my question. And by the way I enjoy your RC videos very much keep up the good work.
