The first series, The Black Adder, which is set in the Middle Ages, isn't great, but Blackadder II (Elizabethan period), Blackadder the Third (Regency/Napoleonic), and Blackadder Goes Forth (WWI, which you just watched) are all classic of British comedy. And I won't spoil it for you, but the series finale of Blackadder Goes Forth is now legendary and a milestone in British television.

@@dominusetdeus060644 Hey, if you enjoyed it, fair play to you - so did I, to a degree. It's not awful. But it's definitely been received and viewed as the weakest of the three - possibly because they made Edmund the idiot and Baldrick the smart one, and it was more effective when they switched it round.

The clip ends about 10 seconds before the pencils up his nose and underpants on his head get explained.
As with Only Fools and Horses, the writing for Blackadder is so well woven together each episode that is a must watch but really needs full episodes from start to finish to get elevate them from "really good" to "great".

This is from the last episode of Blackadder goes forth , it's conclusion is both horrifying , funny and poignant , and brings home the total futility of the war . Rowan is trying to feign madness , hence the pencils .
The colourless calculator did four series , the first set in medieval times , the second Elizabethan , the third Georgian and the last ww1. The casts for the series are great including Stephen Fry , Hugh Laurie , Miranda Richardson and several others . The premise holding it together is that like a bad penny the Blackadder genes keep turning up through history . It's only half an hour per episode so shouldn't be to difficult to get some context .

Just an insight to British humour,.....A truck driver pulls into a Rest stop on the I 30, sits at a table opposite a German truck driver, they start talking about their vehicles, the German waffles on about his Mercedes and how good and efficient it was boring the trucker to death, he said ''I can drive from New York to Florida in 8 hours drop my load and be back home by supper. ''Wow'' says the other driver thats good, ''but I can beat that'' How come'' says the German.....He says years back I went from London, England to Dresden, dropped my load and was back in London in 2½ hrs, ''Jeez'' says the German that was good were you driving a Mack? Spark Notes of Blackadder: there are Four Seasons of six episodes, and some specials... The Black Adder was set in a fictional period between Richard III's death and Henry Tudor, so medieval period. Returning for Blackadder II - in the Elizabethan period, Blackadder the Third - in the house of Prince Regent (George IV), and Blackadder goes Forth - in WWI in the trenches.
The Specials: Blackadder's Christmas Carol - a retelling with Robbie Coltrane... Blackadder The Cavalier Years - an insertion into a Royal Variety Performance, with Hugh Laurie as Charles I and Warren Clarke as Oliver Cromwell... Blackadder Back and Forth - a time travelling special for the millennium, set in current time.... Blackadder The Army Years - a monologue as part of another Royal Variety Performance (maybe a Jubilee year?), about how Britain used to be no.1, so the best way out of everything is to invade France.

There's a lot more to the sketch, and indeed the whole episode of the programme. WW1 was essentially fought about 'honour'. Damn good thing to get ferocious about in those days, especially if you could conduct it by sending many good men to certain death and injury. My great grandmother received about £25 in compensation for the loss of my great uncle whose body lay in mud for 6 months. Officers who survived would get about £5000 for winning it. No, it is brilliant comedy, not least because it shows up the arses for what they were. It's brilliant.

The funniest Blackadder is the one you are watching. You should really watch them in chronicological order. Starts in the medieval era, moves into Elizabethan period, then onto the Regency period of George III,and then finally into the 1st, World War. All have a very rough adherence to genuine English history, but should also be taken with a pinch of salt, and some absolutely superb acting. (4 series and 4 episodes per series I think, you really have to watch them all in full to get full impact of the genius of the whole genre. Good luck,

So Blackadder called him up before having to go Over the Top and attack German Lines, so the General said ok but to be clear we are even after this, ok Blackadder he said to get out of it and to be sent home as being mad, stick a pair of underpants on your head and 2 pencils up your nose ( that might have been the thing in late 1800s early 1900s but not in 1917 where this episode is set.

The writers were using Catch 22 - which specified that concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. IMO Blackadder is the best ever British comedy series. The first series was probably not up to the standard of the other three but 2, 3 and 4 are top class. Have a look at the scene in series 2 where Blackadder tries to teach Baldrick some simple Maths using beans. Brilliant.

There are also many hilarious scenes in season 1 btw. - he is just a different type from the Blackadders of seasons 2, 3 & 4 😉

Just to take issue with something you said. It's important to understand, that World War II happened because of World War I not in spite of it. Were it not for the economic collapse of Germany caused by reparations, Nationaler Sozialismus would never have taken power.

Basically if you don’t laugh at Blackadder you must be dead. It’s hilarious. It doesn’t date because it’s historic anyway. Making a cup of tea in Blackadder Goes Forth is very funny.

You have to watch the series (start at series 2,the first was not so good) there's some brilliant historical references and the cast absolutely chewed the scenery off it. Brilliant stuff! 😎👌

Your reactions to British comedy is priceless, even though I've seen this sketch so many times, watching you guys watch it is like me watching it for the first time. I just finished watching an episode of Fawlty Towers (John Cleese) this episode is called "The Germans" you got to give it a watch and let's see your reaction, I guarantee you will leave your seat!!

The underpants on the head and pencils in the nose were a tried but not so true methode of getting a section 8 and being declared bonkers. When he faced summary execution, he backed out of it and went over the top to get killed anyway.

Funny thing is that Archduke Franz Ferdinand had an ostrich feather in his hat when he got shot, so the poor old ostrich indeed died for nothing.

I'm really into military history, going back to the ancient Greeks, Persians, right through to today...and yet, and yet, there is something about WW1 that pisses me off so much that I can't get too into it because it will seriously ruin my mood. No other war does this to me. I think it has to be the sheer idiotic way it started, the way it was fought, the industrial scale of the slaughter and, perhaps worst of all, the way it set the conditions for the rise of Hitler, Mussolini and Imperial Japan and WW2.

Yep, Blackadder is classic British wordplay at its best. These clips really don't do it justice because you're missing the context of the storyline. In series 4 (goes forth) Blackadder is constantly trying to find ways to avoid "going over the top". He knows it Means certain death. George thinks it's heroic and exciting, and Baldric is great at being Baldric. You really need to watch the whole lot from series 2 onwards. ✌❤🇬🇧

Every episode Blackadder was trying to get out of fighting, in this final episode he is pretending to be mad so he can be discharged, hence wearing his underpants on his head and the pencils up his nose!

Love all the Black Adder shows. With regards to which one you should watch-its Black Adder goes Forth-set within WW1. The show is seen as a tribute, with the ending of the final show. The other Black Adder shows cover past segments of English history. Thr final show BA4, shows many English comedians, such as the late Rick Mayall and his sidekick Ade Edmundson. Have to admit us English do have a good sense of humour.

Rowan Atkinson is a brilliant comedy actor - known best in the USA as Mr Bean - and you will doubtless enjoy all four Blackadder series. The first one is considered a little weak, but gained a lot of weight from the second series onwards. Have you spotted Hugh Lawrie in an early role before he produced House ?
