Gale Force 8 is a phrase from the "Shipping Forecast". A daily weather forecast broadcast on BBC radio for ships & boats. It always follows a very formulaic and jargonistic script, reporting the same aspects of the weather for the same regions of the seas around Britain and Ireland in the same order. Useful of course for people at sea but also hugely enjoyed as something like poetry by people who often don't fully understand it but enjoy listening. Wikipedia has a quote from Zeb Soanes, one of the radio presenters who reads it:
"To the non-nautical, it is a nightly litany of the sea. It reinforces a sense of being islanders with a proud seafaring past. Whilst the listener is safely tucked-up in their bed, they can imagine small fishing-boats bobbing about at Plymouth or 170ft waves crashing against Rockall."

That's the joke. He's called Capt. Darling, so every time someone addresses him they call him darling. 🙄

And it's a name that's caused him so many problems growing up that he cringes every time he hears it.

Court Martial is a military trial. The " shipping forecast " tells you the weather at sea ( the gale force 8 reference ) . Im not sure when it started.

Fun fact for you: It was Stephen Fry who suggested calling him Darling, instead of Cartwright, which was his original name in the script.

  • @JamesLMason
    @JamesLMason 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

Yes, Darling is his second name. That's the joke. He gets called quite legitimately using his name but it sounds like a pet name.

Weather forecast (actually shipping forecast as broadcast every night on radio to this day!) Baldrick thinks the ring on the pigeon is from a christmas cracker, typically containing a toy or novelty, a paper hat and a joke!

Oscar Wilde was the greatest playwright and wit of his generation. (Late Victorian Era)
You will know many of his expressions.
    Worth a look.

Just before he was sued by Lord Queensberry (of The Rules) for gross indecency (see Lord Alfred Douglas/Bosie), he had three fully booked out plays in London's West End (equivalent to Broadway) at the same time: The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, and Lady Windermere's Fan (my favourite). See also the film, The Happy Prince.

And Oscar Wilde was actually *played* by Stephen Fry in the movie "Wilde." I can hardly think of a better fit. 😊

    Few points:
-In the opening sequence, the "extras" in the parade are real soldiers who had to get WW1-style haircuts for this. If you look carefully you can see them trying very hard not to laugh.
-Tim McInnerny (aka Captain Darling) said for months after filming wrapped he struggled to lose the facial twitch he'd used for the character.
-At the time this was made, there were still a few veterans about. Before the series came out there was quite understandably uproar that someone would make a comedy about such an awful war, but then after seeing it some of the veterans came out saying that the gist of some of the madness was pretty accurate!
Apart from the very rightly famous ending scene, my favourite episode in this series is where they go to flying school 😄

Court martial means a military trial. The weather forecast you heard was part of the Shipping Forecast which is still broadcast today.

The opening and closing bits with the band were filmed at the Cavalry Barracks in Colchester, England where I stayed many a time whilst we were on the army shooting ranges doing live firing exercises nearby in Colchester. Sadly it doesn't exist any more as its been sold off, demolished and houses have been built on the land BUT if you slow down both of them and look at the very top left you will see the walls with a round top of a more modern contruction which are the walls of the army glass house (prison to anyone else) which we avoided at all cost. The ending credits in black and white is actually modern filming when they did the series and made to look old. I was in the Royal Anglians.

The Shipping Forecast is broadcast four times day on the Long Wave frequency on Radio 4. It's actually been available for 150 years, although originally only in newspapers. It's a staple of British life.
I would recommend having a listen to it at least once.

The shipping forcast is on twice a day on radio 4. Many of us have grown up with it, its incredibly relaxing to listen to seemingly random words and numbers spoken in an almost poetic rhythm. Obviously its actually useful as a forcast to some .

Ah Connor, you make me laugh at times!!😂 You didn't realise Darling was a name? But that you thought it was a "pet" name had me in a fit of giggles. Yes, this, like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers. is satire. But British officers in WWI calling each other "pet names"??? 😂😅

Gale force eight is still a common weather announcement in the UK - provided you listen to the Shipping Forecast late at night on Radio 4.
The shipping forecast - keeping sailors safe and getting the rest of us to sleep for generations now.
"Viking, north Utsire, south Utsire: 6, 7, occasionally gale 8 at first. Moderate or good, occasionally very poor in South Utsire"
If you're ever in the UK and struggling to sleep? Stick that on. It's almost poetic.

A court martial does not automatically result in execution, but it is a serious threat that can potentially lead to such an outcome. According to my information, during WW1, the UK army carried out approximately 3,000 executions, while 310,000 soldiers, both officers and other ranks, were court-martialled. Although many charges could have led to execution, a significant number resulted in penal servitude or financial penalties instead. Or they were completely dismissed

When you skip back 15 seconds it's very annoying and feels like a waste of everyone's time, plus it ruins the flow of the reaction. 2-5 seconds isn't a option presumably.

He didn't know who Oscar Wilde was, but I'm sure he realises one should either be a work of art or wear one...and that he can resist anything except temptation...in a HAND-BAG.
