Yeah he was a comedy genius who died way to early. Had the honour of meeting him and ade after Bottom weapons trade y fronts tour. A really funny and nice guy. Greatly missed

Quennie (Queen Elizabeth) is such a funny but dark character. Always spices her conversations with the threat of beheading. Rik Mayall's character, Flashheart, was mostly ad-libbed and the rest of the cast didn't know what to expact so were very surprised by his over-dramatic entrance.
I think I remember them being interviewed and Rik just told them he was going to steal the scene. And then BAM!
That's what i always loved about Rik Mayall he was always just playing parts of himself with the volume dialed up Lovably bonkers.
Queen Elizabeth is played by the brilliant Miranda Richardson (basically a straight film and theatre actress) who, like many British straight actors and actresses can turn their hands to comedy. Her portrayal of Queenie as a maniacal, spoilt child was just perfect. She also pops up in Series 3 & Series 4 (as different characters)
17:30 - I can remember a history lesson at school where someone gave an answer and when the teacher asked "how did you know that? " he replied "It was on Blackadder! "
Rik Mayall was an absolute legend. Highly recommend you watch Bottom the series, then the outtakes and then the 5 live shows which are absolute comedy gold!
The world was a worse place when they decided to cut him as Peeves from the first Harry Potter film

Rik Mayall was my comedy hero growing up. His appearance in this episode was quite possibly the best scene in all the 4 series of Blackadder, his entrance alone warrants this. Sorely missed, never forgotten. A true national treasure.
This is a riff on Twelfth Night where the female protagonist dresses as a man and both a Count and a Lady fall for her. And then her twin brother turns up. Back in the day all female characters were played by boys. So you had a boy playing a girl pretending to be a boy being pursued by a man and another boy pretending to be a woman.
RDJ would be perfect for the play.

Glad you enjoyed this guys. I watched it when it aired all those years ago and rewatch it regularly. My son’s history teacher had the kids watch Blackadder Goes Forth as part of their class. When you get there, you’ll understand why. Happy New Year to you both ❤

Miranda Richardson was spectacular as Elisabeth the first she made this series as the whimsical spoiled little girl with absolute power.

Yes, but if you aren't familiar with Shakespeare you really notice the jokes that go over your head. Blackadder 2 & 3 are more subtle.

In my school we literally did watch Blackadder in history lessons!
Most of my friends group are guys so they always refer to me as Bob even now, to the point they forget my real name and strangers look at me oddly in the street when they hear someone call "my" name lol.

But seriously, everything Mayall was in was worth watching. He was a genius at the whole performance of comedy.

Queen Elizabeth was Far and away the funniest character in the Blackadder series, and the character "Bob" is a recurring theme, and made all the funnier simply by the way Rowan Atkinson says "Bob"

Hands down one of the finest British comedies ever made . . . And one that never got tired. Each season was better than the last until it ended with one of the most brilliantly funny and heartbreaking episodes of any comedy out there.
This was released when I was at high school, and literally EVERYONE began quoting ‘Blackadderisms’ at school. In fact my whole family were at it too…. Ace comedy 👍🏻👍🏻

Rowan Atkinson has a slight stutter, especially with words beginning with B, so the writers knew this and purposely used the name BOB because of how Rowan pronounced his B’s🍻🎉

Lord Flashheart was one of my childhood heroes. Definitely a good call to start with season 2 you would be disappointed watching the first one. Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry 8th and Anne Boleyn which would probably make her a bit crazy

We watched 2 episodes of Blackadder in our history lessons at school:
The Rotten Borough episode from season 3, which is about elections in that era. The final ever episode of Blackadder from season 4, Going Over The Top, which is about WW1.
So glad you guys are doing these...and defo best starting with 2nd series...every episode right to end of 4 is amazing. Not sure they top IT crowd work outing though...but there are some classics along the way. Now, Baldrick...this is called 'adding'....😂
IMO ‘the work outing’ is one of the best episodes of British Comedy ever (and I bet at least 70% of the U.K. population have never even seen it)…certainly in the top 20.
BUT, the final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth is one of those times in TV history where most people to this day vividly remember watching it for the first time.
Hard to believe now that BBC Comedy once could be so impactful.
The character of Kate/Bob, played by Gabrielle Glaister, reappears in an episode of another Ben Elton sitcom about Shakespeare called Upstart Crow (2016). She appears as Justice Robert, but removes her beard to show her true self. Great in-joke for those who remember Blackadder.
You must do Series 1 as there are some great episodes in it.
You guys should also check out Black Books when you get a change. Totally different production and writers but similar humour and dialogue.
The main chatacter Bernard has an assistant called Manny. His insults remind me alot of Blackadder and Baldrick; "he looks like a horse in a man costume!"

Yes, this series teaches pretty much the essentials of the Tudor period: civilization, cruelty, courtiers, and a spoiled despot.
I'm in the UK and my history teacher had is watch a lot of Blackadder. Especially this and the final season

BTW, there's nowt wrong with Series 1. It has a slightly different "feel" to it, but, is very funny.

I would highly recommend you guys check out the 80s brit sitcom called The Young Ones.
This was a kind of satire of the Renaissance era, not just the time and the events but also the drama. The whole situation of Blackadder falling in love with Kate disguised as "Bob" is a play on the work of Shakespeare (because you can't have a Shakespearian comedy without a girl disguising herself as a boy, the same way you can't have a Shakespearian tragedy with just one murder: it simply isn't done).

Rik Mayall (Flasheart) is a true British legend. You need to check out the Young Ones. Not only does he star in it, he wrote it with Ben Elton, who also wrote this! Apparently Rik only agreed to do it if he got the biggest laugh!

I watched series one when it first came out and it was fantastic. Just because the next series were better made and financed doesn't make series one unwatchable. I called all my students 'Bob', emphasising the first 'B' until I knew their names. I told them it was my way of saying 'I can't remember your first name' and just correct me. A brilliant show, and it started with series one!

@@theonetheonlyjoey I told them all where the BOB came from, and some were called Robert and said nothing when called Bob! It also looked like I knew all their names when OFSTED or being audited people where in.
Black adders lines are one of the best examples of British sarcastic humour and quick wit, "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence," wrote Oscar Wilde but they often miss the intelligence part out when quoting this
You guys should also react to ‘Garth Mahrenghis Darkplace’ it’s a comedy about a really badly shot and acted 80s hospital starring Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade. If not that, Toast of London is incredible too

It is good - but what people really like is the character of Blackadder, which is different in Series 1
