    Today, internet based medicine appears to be years ahead of conventional medicine. In the case of carbohydrate effects, I'd say 20 years ahead. I was a type 2 diabetic on loads of insulin and other medications for 10 years. When I switched to a keto diet, I was able to drop all my insulin and other meds, as well as 75 pounds, and now have normal blood sugar levels. It's so obvious - if you don't want elevated blood sugar levels, don't pour sugar (carbohydrates) into your blood, yet it's still a mystery to 99% of doctors out there. Amazing.

      Hi appreciate your positive outcome on switching. Can you be specific “ what you used to eat “ and what you never eat now. Not the medical/science terminology but what actual major foods where you eating as a daily food that you never touch now?

      Doct jason Fung has revealed a study comparing doctors diets against diabetes and prescriptions for their patients. Guess what? Doctors are on keto while their patients on pills.

      Insulin makes people fat ultimately, which is a bad idea for T2 Diabetics unless it's your own body's insulin.
      Sugar is poison to excess.
      Fat is Good and does not make you Fat helps in all areas of the body, Like the skin, brain, joints.
      Fructose is the worst and very high in glucose, the only sugar that goes straight to the liver to be broken down into triglycerides, and eventually glucose.
      Intermittent Fasting (IF) is best for your body 18/6 window, reducing your meals to two per day in a 6-hour window & Push clear fluids 2 Litres. Proteins should replace Carbs along with Veggies.

    Corona has been a blessing for myself. A couple of years ago I only took advice from my GP. Then they locked the doors in panic and I had to look elsewhere to treat health problems, such as youtube. My GP rang me recently following a blood test and told me I needed to go on statins due to high cholesterol (I'm on high fat low carb diet now) I just couldn't be bothered to discuss it with him and told him not to worry about it and hung up. I learn more on youtube about health and would still be ignorant had it not been for lockdowns.

      I took statins daily for eight or nine years until I did a little research on them and realised they were doing me no good. The doctor who prescribed them is probably still doing so.

      Same here in UK. You can't get hold of a doctor when you need one. But they soon get in contact with you when they want to push their drugs and jabs!

    Two years ago I was obese, had high blood pressure, all my joints hurt, I was tired all the time, and my Doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. Then I discovered the source of my problems, excessive sugar and processed foods. I switched to a Low Carb Diet and used Intermittent Fasting of 20 hours Fasting and a 4 hour window for two normal meals. Within 3 days I started to feel better and by two weeks I no longer had constant pain in my joints and my feet.
    Today I'm normal weight, don't have the pain I used to have, I'm no longer pre-diabetic, and I have my energy back. Channels like this one have saved my life and given my health back to me. I only wish I had known this a few decades ago. At least I know it now. Thank you !!!!!

      I still process almost all of my foods, either by baking, frying, broiling or boiling, plus putting various types of spices on them. We have to remember that these are all processes. After all, 'processed' foods and regulations requiring cleanliness in processing the animals which are slaughtered, are the primary reason that we've almost completely stopped dying from spoiled or diseased foods. Processed food forever!

      I found that once I started eating properly I only wanted to eat 1 or 2 times per day naturally. No snacks, no cravings, no timing just living naturally and just eating when I felt the need. I was sleeping 8 hours solid for the first time in my life.

      @@d.e.b.b5788 This is not what processed food means at all= processed-all nutrients removed then synthetic versions re-added, artificial flavors added-chemicals added, etc. loads of sugars in one form or another, these are mainly all your packaged foods-TV dinners, frozen meals. Read some of the labels. Just FYI-no offense.

    I've been Keto for about 10 months now: lost about 45 lbs (20 kilos), blood pressure when from high to perfect, and my blood glucose went from a pre-diabetic level of 121 to a respectable 85. All with just diet. When my doctors (GP, cardiologist, and oncologist) found out I had accomplished this with diet alone and without the aid of prescription meds, they treated me like a criminal. So sad and disappointing.

    Well because of Low Carb Down Under and others. I have defeated type 2 diabetic as of 6pm on the 4th Oct 2021 due to confirmation from my doctor from blood and urine tests. Woohoo

      @@jenrich111 I tend to have always avoided doctors. I found out I was a Type 2 by my blurry vision, constant urinating, tiredness. I quit sugar (and animal protein) within 2 weeks my symptoms gone and my eye sight better that it was years go.

    Excellent presentation, discussion at the end of the video. I have been Ketogenic for seven years now, losing over 60 lbs of fat on my 5’6” frame. I am in my mid 70’s, am not on any meds, and am doing circuit training, cycling, strength training! I learned my lesson late in life, and hope to prolong it further with my new lifestyle! Personally, I believe the collaboration between the medical industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the refined foods industry, along with government, are there to make us ill, dependent upon drugs, and keep us filling the hospitals!

    At 42 I had a large osteophyte removed from my throat. Which I can see NOW was caused by insulin resistance. Hyperinsulinemia. Can not even count the drs and surgeons I seen around this. NOT ONE ever looked at my insulin levels or other chronic illnesses and seen my toxic load of insulin as the issue.
    Osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, adenomyosis, lipedema leaky gut, fatty liver are the big ones. Cellulite, insomnia, dry eyes, dry skin, brain fog, food intolerances, allergies all things you don't even mention to the doctor. Felt like a hypocondriac since I was 16. Heading into 50 I have control of my health and reversed pretty much all of the above mentioned. Makes me overwhelmed when I think back to all this. Hope you reading this knows that you can do it too.

    Personal experience over the last 8 Months, continuous weight loss with out excessive exercise, Belly slowly melting away good way to do it as the skin doesn't become as flabby, Man boobs gone, totally different kind of hunger signs, more like feeling empty not like starving hunger pains, as soon as carbs are eaten after a few weeks of not having them, the stomach feels like it is burning from Acid I think, improved General feeling of being healthier, feels great not carrying the extra 16 plus kilos, better sleep, less Mucus, not to mention doing the number 2's is a breeze no constipation no straining and regular as clockwork, based on high protein and fat Red Meat only, green leafy vegetables only two maybe three times a week, dont consume liquid 30 minutes either side of meals, eat twice a day usually 10 AM and main meal before 6 PM so only eat in an 8 hour period. I do get physically tired but dont feel lethargic, hope this helps some one else to Kick the Carbs. I know its basic information but it is working for me. Wish I knew about this Years ago.

      @@Marconi121 Refined carbohydrates and sugars are absolutely addictive. Furthermore, the hunger pains from being on a high-carb diet are absolutely awful. It's intellectually dishonest to treat carbs in meat as qualitatively the same as those derived from grains, sugars, etc..

    Dr Gary Fettke was my surgeon at a young age.
    Fixed my L5 fusion. 27 years later and my back has been great since!! 2 months onto a Carnivore Diet I am happy to see you advocating for thus lifestyle! Good stuff!

    Myself also over a year ago I was topping 120kg- I had low motivation, became reclusive, had aches and pains everywhere to the point it took me 15 minutes every morning to straighten myself up. I had high blood pressure, constantly tired and I would wager that I was likely pre-diabetic.
    I had argued (being nurse I knew better) with good friend that all this ketogenic IF lifestyle was unsafe and unhealthy for years prior to this point mean while I was just getting fatter and more unhealthy.
    Last year I decided to try If and keto and just over a year later I am 32kg lighter and healthiest I’ve been in a long time.

      @@michelleduncan9965 Paediatric RN here too. Currently having a battle with my daughters Cf team wanting me I increase her carbs by 150% or she goes on overnight feeds.
      She’s happy, active, very intelligent and less reliant on her Cystic fibrosis medication when she’s more ketogenic. (She’s 2) the only thing she is not doing is gaining weight like the average 2 year old but she was only 1.256kg at birth.

      I studied graduate level biochemistry for a year while waiting to get into medical school. I thought it would help me. It took 30 years before I found out I was indeed right. The first 30 years i blindly promoted healthy whole grains while watching my patients and my family get sick.

    I am vegetarian so I took longer to recover. But back in Oct 2017 I had awful memory lapses and brain fog. feet that hurt like hell and thought I had dementia. I was relieved to be diagnosed T2D. But the UK National Health Service offered me metformin statins and a flu jab. I rejected the meds, did the research, and slashed by sugars and carbs. Within 5 months my HBa1c had reduced from 60 & 65 ( Oct2017) to 49 ( March 2018). By June 2019 it was down to 40 and has been within the normal range over sine. My weight has reduce from 17 1/2 stone to 13 stone now. The benefits are amazing. 1) Brain fog and memory lapses virtually gone 2) Weight down without trying and no hunger pangs, either.3) I am off thyroid meds for underactive thyroid. 4) My feet are better although not 'back to normal'. I wish I had know this years before because my diabetes had gong undiagnosed for years. ! Even if you are vegetarian like me you can still do it !

    Excellent presentation!! As a shoulder orthopedic surgeon I am already aware of the inflammatory effect of carbs to the joints, as frozen shoulder typically occurs in patients with some degree of insulin resistance. My assumption was that sugar metabolism would also be somehow related to arthritis, but the link with cartilage damage and osteoarthritis hadn’t occurred to me yet! A fantastic eye opener! I’ll be recommending low carb diet to those patients as well. Curious about the results! Thank you for your great work in this area!

      Fantastically good news doctor, pass it on to your colleagues will you please. I know they want to heal people and are overworked, but if they aren't up to date with this information, they can't do their jobs properly; more likely to do more harm than good. Medical schools are a disgrace and haven't advanced in their basic teaching in a century. My husband was a doctor; he was curious and never stopped studying including scientific papers and journals. Two of my children went to medical school then gave it up in disgust. They were very disillusioned and it was easier to do then because they had a five year grants, (UK), so still plenty of time to change degrees, one a joint Law & Economics, the other Computer Science.

    My concerns at this point in my life is for the sake of the little ones. The choices parents are making are horrendous; sugar laden snacks with a sugary drink! It’s sad to observe this behavior.

      Same concern & each generation seems to get worse in that knowledge of nutrition... grew up on the farm, fresh air, labored hours a day in that big garden to feed her family fresh all summer and preserves for winter. God shows us in the Bible about health, food, and lifestyle.

    This is the best talk that clearly shows why a carnivore diet has worked so well for my wife and I. Energy levels through the roof, mental clarity plus every positive outcome possible. Both in our mid seventies and have never been healthier and enjoying life as much.

      It's good to hear about older people on carnivore diet...way of living. I am 70 and the more I read about it and listen to people on Facebook etc, the I like it. Just having a hard time giving up fruits & veges ( breads etc easy ) as I have fruit trees, berries, grapes and a great vege garden. I live in Tasmania Australia and it will grow almost anything....but not tropical.

      Yet I’m here feeding my daughter a very natural nutritious diet and her medical team have thrown the word “neglect” and “neglectful” on the table.
      She has everything cooked from scratch hight proteins, animal fats vegetables rich diet.
      She is excelling in her intelligence and a very happy and active 2 year old/ the only thing is her weight is slow but she was also premature and tiny for her gestation.
      I literally cannot believe the state of the dietary advice in currently health care.

      When you say no sugar, does that include milk? I'm new to all of this. I'm already a thin person and I'm afraid I would lose more weight doing this diet. I drink half and half with my coffee and I really don't want to give that up. 🙁

    I've been on the carnivore diet for three months and am very close to reaching my goal weight, so the other day I decided I could cheat a little and shared a doughnut with my daughter.       Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution book was published in 1972. That's 49 years ago. Dr. Atkins Diet strategy is low carbohydrates. At some point, folks started calling Dr. Atkins Diet "keto." In my opinion, calling the low carb diet "keto" takes away credit where credit is due.

    I had a seizure today - tonic clonic. Yesterday, I was at my mum's and I ate some birthday cake - home made, still not good, chicken pie and her homemade pizza.
    I think this caused the seizure. I should know better by now. Carnivore gave me my health back. Zero carbs from now on.

      i think once your body experiences true health it strongly objects to poison getting in on the act again so your tolerance to junk food will be zero which is good . hoping you are recovered now and feeling better

      Just Debbie Your absolutely correct. This happened to my daughter who has epilepsy as well. It is so sad because she doesn't understand that eating cake, sweets, crisps, biscuits etc etc, can cause her to have a seizure. She has learning difficulties as well which is heartbreaking to try to explain to her. But I learned when she was small that I must be cruel to be kind to her, and threw everything out of the house that could cause her sugar levels to raise dangerously high. I just wish more doctors and consultants knew this information. It could save so much trauma for people and their carers. Epilepsy is a dangerous condition as it can cause sudden unexpected death.

    Been on Keto for 6 months. Lost 60lbs and off BP meds. Seems to work for me, and many others in the comments. So many companies would go broke if everyone started eating properly. That wouldn't be the reason it's not more widely known, surely...

      I am 75 and just learned about and started LCHF dieting July 20,2022. Also I do 20/4 intermittent fasting. Within one month was able to give up BP meds after being on them over 20 years!!! 😳😳😳
      Lost 14 lbs so far (9 weeks) with about 4 lbs to hit goal of 125. I am amazed at this miracle way of eating.😮😮😮

The medical profession really needs to wake up but unfortunately big food and big pharma have huge financial stakes in all this!       I often walk around the supermarkets now and will often consider how much smaller they would be if even half of the carbohydrates and sugar laden food was removed.

    I used to try to convince my mother to go on a ketogenic diet. She would not. One day she began to suffer dementia. Truth be known, what I saw was not the beginning of dementia, but the worsening of a neurologic problem she had had for many years. When she finally agreed to go on the ketogenic diet, she was normal. She could remember some of the deranged behavior, and told me that she didn't believe me about the danger of high carbs until this happened. I tell her that I don't think anyone can eat the high levels of carbs that most eat without suffering dementia, young or old. I see middle aged people every day who are neurologically impaired from carbs. Sometimes even children. The dose is poison, as you said.

      My husband is a physician who trained at a world renowned medical school in NYC 30 years ago. He only received about eight hours of nutrition education and even then, it was usually related to digestion. Cardiac and metabolic disorders are discussed at length, but again, very little elaborate training about the impact of crappy diets related to these diseases. He learned everything about diet on his own once we had children and today they’re young adults. They have a good handle on their diet and work out daily. I’ve been sugar and flour free for a long time as my mental health diminishes when I’m on sugar or refined flours

    My fitness coaches force me to be fully in keto as much as possible. So I work hard at it. But I have remained very afraid of keto for 8 months despite my practicing it. This video relieved me of all that worrying.

      I have been "maintaining" my hypoglycemia for 40 years. Imagine how scared I was not eating for extended periods of time. Little did I - or my doctors - understand that my diet and frequency of eating "gave" me hypoglycemia. Now, I don't "have" hypoglycemia because I eat keto. I also easily lost 50 pounds during my first five months eating keto.

    I'm from mountains of Iran, its called Lavij in mazandaran province. Part of our daily diet looks like this. eggs for breakfast at sunlight with vegetables grown from our farm, we have 5-6 raddishes, we have lots of onion leaves, like i dont know what you call it there, but when you plant the leaves and the greens longs, we have fetta cheese and we have tea, cucumber, tomato and actual onions. For lunch we have rice with some meat. usually red meat with rice and pomegrante sauce with tea after. for evening tea we have tea with bunch of raw vegetables like mint, and bunch of native stuff. we wrap that with homemade bread in out tandoor. and for dinner the women skip it usually and the men have red meat kebabed around sunset. We consume minimum 2kg of red meat per person weekly, 12 eggs, and lots and lots of rice. sometimes we have fish from lake too. But my point is people here live up to 110 years old, and if someone makes it below 90 its unfortunate and usually from cancer and its rare. When looking at studies and videos like this, you have to think, what is more valid? human experience or studies? im not sure for how many generations but minimum 5 of our generations and everyone from out village follows this as it is part of the culture. also people in other parts of asia eat like this too. I'd say don't worry, just exercise, go walk with animals, stay active, and you're good.

      You are lucky your culture has such lovely fresh produce, good health and long life. If I was you I wouldn't be changing anything.
      We in the west are damaged from generations of bad food, medications and chemical additives. This is why people are turning to extreme diets to reverse the damage already done.

      I think that the carbohydrates and sugars which make up the majority of the calories consumed by westerners are highly processed and refined and often paired with unhealthy chemicals. That paired with overconsumption due to sugar addiction and the foods lacking nutritional value translates into major health improvements and weight loss when people cut them out of their diets.

    What a superb presentation! I’m originally a medical microbiologist, yet I learned so much new information from this presentation. The content on the glycocalyx was particularly interesting, and the inflammatory effects of insulin surprised me. Thank you for an insightful and edifying post-I might even say a life-changing talk for me. I’ve always practiced low-carb eating because I feel so much better and healthier on such a diet. But now I’m going to be even more cautious about sugar.

    About the dose being the poison: I was at a children’s party where one of the moms cautioned a kid that if they eat too much sugar they might get sick. I personally never understood this as a child as I could eat a limitless quantity of sugar without ever getting sick. I chatted to the mom who said that as a child she once ate a whole packet of candy and then promptly vomited. Eating that candy sounds like a normal (pre low carb) Tuesday to me so it seemed surprising. However, since starting low carb, I went off the rails one day while camping in horrible weather and ate a bag of the same candy from the mom’s story and ended up getting quite violently sick (I had also had a little alcohol and other junk but nothing seemed really unreasonable compared to what I used to consume as a student).
    So I wonder if some people have a higher tolerance to carb-toxicity than others and then whether it can change over time. As a youth I would frequently eat cans of condensed milk or caramel but it seems like a nauseating prospect now

      When I go off Keto and endulge it is like old times, my body can still handle tons of sugar. I'm 70 been Keto almost 2 years. I'm real healthy and thin, fat adapted etc. My advice is to avoid carbs, do not cheat, just stay on Keto. Carbs are so addictive it's hard to have just a bit. When I'm off my diet I wander around the house looking for sweet stuff to eat. According to this video that is NOT good, don't do that.

      Individuals have varying tolerance to many things: cyanide, heavy metals, etc. It depends on how well the body is able to contain and eliminate the toxin. But tolerance doesn't mean harm isn't still being done, although when we are younger it's easier for the body to heal. It's the repeated and continuous harm that eventually does irreparable damage, which becomes more noticeable as we age.

      Yeah, I think people who regularly eat carbs gain more resistance to them, and that some people have higher tolerances. I’ve never been able to eat an entire bag of candy at a time, but my dad can. On the other hand I was also drinking nothing but soda due to people not knowing that was unhealthy and the tap water in my house making me feel sick. Since cutting carbs I’ve also noticed my tolerance for carbs has gone down.

      That's because of sugar, it's a drug and also a killer. Being on low carb lifestyle I felt pretty fine when I had huge carb meals. Although we all are different, personally high carbs dont do anything to me, but if I eat someting sugary then I will feel like garbage. Just stay away from sugar.

    I am living proof that reduced carb input has dramatically increased my health, and helped me shed 22kg, from 90kg to 68kg. At 183cm, that puts me right in the right range for where I should be. PS... all my blood work results also now perfect. Low carb now for the rest of my life.

      There's definitely a genetic element. I have 3 children and have eaten varying levels of carbohydrates for each pregnancy, ranging from an awful lot to quite little. I've never experienced morning sickness.

    I googled you and saw the article about how you're not allowed to tell your patients to avoid too much sugar etc... that's absolute madness and I know you are a legit info source cos of this.
    Man I keep coming back to this debate I've never really eaten a high carb diet but I do notice I get really bad brain fog and lose motivation (dips in base dopamine after binging too much sugar maybe?) if I eat too much of it. It's making so much sense to me all these modern health issues from inflammation with excess sugar being the cause. I've been eating like this my whole adult life and have never been ill besides maybe a cold every so often that last a few days max... never coughing just stuffy nose.

    Thank you so much for fighting for us. You and Dr. Ken Berry and a handful of others are taking a hard hit getting the word out about how we should really be eating. It pains me to know we are ignoring studies out there on so many subjects, fat,carbs, bad oils, cholesterol are just a few. When I go to Dr Appt I make copies of studies pertaining to my appt from dr ken berry and Dr Fung. I have no idea if they read them, but I hope!!

    This is why I have changed my diet completely - I now weigh over 35kg less than I did at this time last year - I have stopped all of my prescribed meds for high blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Unfortunately, my doctor isn't aware of this, as he doesn't agree with the manner in which I have lost the weight he has been trying to get me to lose for the last 20 odd years.

    This is an excellent primer on the biochemistry behind disease states driven mostly by dietary sugar & fructose intake. I watched it three times - not only because of the density of information presented but because I had difficulty understanding Dr. Fettke as he spoke too rapidly around 75% of the time. I need a more moderate pace of presentation in order to grasp and digest technical information. Thank you for this excellent lecture!

    I went to 100g or less of total carbs each day (which means I can eat some low-sugar ice cream if needed) and it's made a big impact on my mental and physical health. I will get down to 25g a day eventually, by tapering, over a 4-month period and I make sure to eat local foods, freshly cooked, whenever possible. Slow tapering is working much better for me than dropping from the usual 300+g a day of carbs to 20g a day. I think people who are resistant to the idea of low carb can get along better with 100g for awhile then, when they start feeling better, they will get more motivation to drop carb intake even further.
    It helps quite a bit with SIBO/IBS and reduces anxiety that comes with blood sugar swings. Losing 4kg of fat has been a pleasant side benefit, too.

    Pause: the part about the tendons & cartridge I find so fascinating. I started taking collagen & bone broth daily. It tremendously helped my knee pain, ankle pain & pain on the under side of my left foot. Once I went keto though, it took it to another level. I never thought I’d be feeling this great.     Really thought provoking presentation. I never considered small amounts of carbs a problem, but the body does produce all the glucose it needs, so excess becomes an issue through various ways, such as advanced glycation end-products, like Dr Fettke stated.

      Not so fast. I am not sure the long-term effects of keto are without fault, as to the kidneys, for instance. Most nephrologists I have spoken with warn against this diet. What nation has ever lived this way, long-term? None? Is there no reason for that? Just thinking aloud.

      @@jazzsnare If you mean Keto as in high fat, moderate protein, low carbs. The eskimos, many Native American tribes, several African tribes, ancient Scandinavians, Chinese and Japanese cultures (especially the wealthy who did not eat the same foods as the poor). The poor usually ate plants, rice, bread, etc. while the wealthy ate fatty meat, lard, butter, milk, cheese.

      @@jazzsnare Literally in the majority of the humanity lineage we ate a high fat and protein diet with ocasional fruits and other plants when there was no meat around, you are really not thinking clearly about this... also protein does not make kidneys stones, what does that is the so called healthy plants that contain oxalates such as spinach and broccolis, calcium oxalate (not present animal food but only on plant form), gout (caused by inflammation and free radicals such as sugars, oxidized oils, trans fats, etc).

      @@traviswright3343 What's really scary about this presentation ,and I have seen hundreds on this, is that he is the only one to display a carbohydrate like bread as equal to how many tsps of sugar. We think of sugars separately, but this makes it concrete, that we should think of all carbs as teaspoons of sugar! That hurts. I wish he would say the duration of time in which the body handles 1 teaspoon of sugar though. Does that mean 1 tsp per hour, per two hours, per day, or what? Like we think of alcohol, per hour, how fast does one metab sugar? No one is going to eat only one tsp per day. And, multitudes of people go over this strictest of limits, and do fine, by the way. Let's not pretend they all become diabetic from excess carbs, or half the world would be diabetic outright, i.e., all of Asia, who eat rice daily, which is pure carbs.

      @@jazzsnare many variables depend on the answer to your question, which is why western medicine fails as it treats the symptom and not the cause. It's absolutely ludicrous that a type 2 diabetic (insulin resistant) is treated with more insulin, instead of removing the cause - carbohydrate toxicity. However, to answer your question, you have to test yourself as we are all different. Test your blood sugar before you ingest one teaspoon of sugar to get your baseline. Then test at 30 minute intervals afterwards to see how insulin sensitive you are. The quicker your blood sugar returns to baseline, the more insulin sensitivity you have.
      By the way, most of the population is either pre-diabetic or diabetic, they just don't know until disaster occurs. Unfortunately our species is mostly reactive instead of proactive, when it comes to our health.

    Excellent presentation. I’m an LCHF dieter with recently diagnosed type 1 diabetes. I have to wonder why Medical Schools, GP’s, Nutritionists and Dietitians are still recommending 45% carbohydrate diets???

    Listening to you and Dr Rick Johnson (Uric acid and fructose research) is a revelation. I tried to talk to my GP and he said he could see I was one of those “alternate types”.

    Tennis shoulder (frozen) fixed within weeks of going keto. Lost 5 kg. 18/6 fasting. 59 y. O. Non-smoker/non-drinker. Blood glucose and a1c close to being pre-diabetic before. Next check up in 2 months. I eat 2000 vtm d /day now too.

    Managing my type 1 diabetes without carbs, is like not being diabetic. Add carbs, and it's on to the blood glucose level see-saw. Nearly 40 years of dietitians, and endocrinologists telling me to eat more (high GI) 'complex carbs, and demonising all fats, seems almost criminal now.

There is so much to learn and take in that I will be listening to this many times over to learn the cascade of adverse metabolic consequences from oversupply of glucose to the bloodstream. ...And to think that the cascade starts from even 5 grams circulating on a regular basis!

    I first learnt about Ketones about 3 months ago, I have been on low Carb, hi fat diet ever since. I have been recorded as a type 2 diabetic for about 3 years. No one told me about Ketones and I assumed fruit of all kinds was good for me. When first diagnosed conversations with my Doctor at the time and the dietitians were all about understanding the contents on the packet and to avoid sugar. I thank you 'Low Carb Down Under'.
    Losing the first 2 KG was not hard but I want to get down to my BMI which is 68-70 and I understand I can largely reverse the effects of Type 2.

    While I agree that too many carbs are bad and that fat isn’t the bad guy, I disagree on the amount of carbs as well as what our ancestors ate. In most parts of the world, game animals are lean, not fatty. On top of that, we have enzymes in our saliva with the soul purpose of aiding the digestion of starches, and there is much evident that early humans did eat many tubers as well as meat. That being said, if you are inactive and not burning through much glycogen, the amount of carbs you can use would be much less, but if you are active carbs will quickly go into your muscle glycogen reserves and no stay in the blood stream for long. The problem is when you are eating carbs day in day out and they have nowhere to go as the average person does not move enough to justify the amount of carbs they are eating

      I think the animals that were being hunted before agriculture were much larger and fattier than modern animals. Think elephants and hippos but bigger. We were so good at hunting them we made them go extinct. The starch enzymes are simply a hangover from when we were herbivores millions of years ago. They are handy in a lean period and don’t do any harm, so evolution hasn’t got rid of them.

      Agreed and the other part of the problem is the proliferation of ultra highly concentrated carb sources like flour, grains, and sugar, and the fact that as you said people snack on them all day long and stay on the blood sugar roller coaster and feel the need to keep eating more carbs to try and even out those blood sugar spikes. Some people take the carbophobia too far and don't realize that excessive fat also drives long term increase in insulin because they are too focused on the short term spikes caused by consuming carbs. And the mantra of "there is no essential carbohydrate" gets silly when you realize that the amount of essential fatty acids needed is also pretty low, after that you just need energy so whether that comes in the form of carbohydrates or fat I don't think is so important as long as you're not going overboard on either one.

      Starches are meant to be eaten for good health but movement walking and doing stuff that uses muscle strength ALSO is needed alongside starches for good health. We just got lazy.

    The worst about sugar/carbs is really tooth pain to me. I would not even mind the spikes of blood sugars that made you eat 10x a day or have to walk around the house to burn hyperativity energy. The tooth pain was unberable, like a hellish punishement.

    I was eating little of carbs but my right food kept on swelling, then I started carnivore diet and in a week the swelling was gone, allso my back and neck pain. Carbs are very bad.

    I’ve never thought of the removal of glucose in the way you present it here. It definitely gives something to think about. I’ve been on the low carb/keto path for about a year, and within the first few months my sinuses cleared up and my newly developed arthritis vanished.

    Wow, one of the best detailed podcasts on health and sugar.
    The 199 thumbs down are in probability non believers of diet affecting health.
    I know some doctors and i will guess that many dont understand the signifigance of diet and health.
    I was a raw fooder (I also abstained from all flesh foods and dairy products and tea coffee alcohol etc) many years ago and found my overall health and well being ie mental/emotional health, increased many times over.
    Again great presentation/ podcast.

      If you drink to much alcohol (or ingest any poison in excess) the body can respond by vomiting up the stomach contents, including unabsorbed alcohol, lessening the amount absorbed thereafter, reducing the toxic load - this is a great outcome. A great outcome of puking after drinking to much. Morning sickness may be the bodies way of rejecting to much toxic sugar maybe...

      @@emh8861 bulimia has nothing to do with fasting, bulimia is the purging of food via vomiting or laxatives, if you are talking about anorexia, it's a condition where the individual restricts itself of calories even when underweight, fasting is a controled way of reducing not just weight but also inflammation and gives you autophagy, growth hormone, and other wonderful hormones.
      Fasting is to be done safely and not persisted when feeling sick, if you do it in a wrong way it is not fasting that is a bad thing, you didn't properly researched how to do it safely.

    I'm 73, female with a gross surgical history and was an RN shockingly - i've been low carb now for 9months and have experienced some wt loss but recently there has been a 'carb creep' but still under 100 g daily (Ryvita crunch at breakfast with blue/black/strawberries with yoghurt at lunch. (2meals daily.) I do IF every day ranging from 12-18 routinely depending on circs and my sleep pattern. I'd be happy to participate in a strict research project! Well done Dr Fettke.

    I'm curious about the immediate uptick in insulin resistance that follows fat intake. What's up with that? Is that increase in resistance for keeping insulin levels high to facilitate fat storage and limit stored fat utilization?
    That insulin resistance foils going Low-Carb for recovery from early T2D. You can't eat only protein.

" We've known from experimental studies for more than 85 years that high consumption of fat promotes IR. The only way to resolve IR and control glucose levels and be able to eat carbs is to eat a WFPB diets that is very low in fat. You can't cure IR on low carb, just mask the fact that you have it.

    Evolutionarily, it makes sense carbohydrates wouldn't be essential given seasonal variability in availability of most carbohydrate-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and honey in the natural environment prior to human agriculture - we would need to be efficient fat burners in the winter. I don't necessarily think that means we should remove carbohydrates entirely from our diet year round, esp. if you're metabolically healthy. I live in tropical QLD and have fruit and honey regularly, although my diet is mainly meat, eggs, avocado, and full fat dairy these days. Big fan of Dr. Fettke !

    I'm from Indiana. All I see are fields of corn,soybeans,tomatoes and occasionally melons. There really isn't a huge amount of cattle compared to the crops. Corporate farming money controls the politics.

    Wonderful video. Dr. Gary explains complex scientific processes very well for laypeople. I was especially interested on the reports on sugar and osteoarthritis. My husband (age 77) has noticed an incredible change in his knee problem since we went strictly low carb/hi (good) fat.

    I am on the thin side, very fit for my age (66 and a long term runner) but i have high cholesterol so i tried a very low carb diet and IF. it was not good. I stayed on it for four weeks, apart from a couple of breakouts when out visiting, i ate no refined carbs at all. My running slowed down considerably, my insomnia returned and i got constipated. I felt edgy all the time and had to go back to eating some carbs.

      You need to make sure you're getting your electrolytes in, and that you are getting in enough animal fats. And, did you give yourself enough time for your body to adapt? There is an adaptation period that can take weeks or a couple of months for some people. These things take time and even some planning!

      Same here. I suffered negative hormonal issues, non stop insomnia and became extremely defensive and aggressive. All stopped when reintroducing some starch at each meal.
      Never listen to those who dismiss you as not having enough salt or electrolytes or whatever. Not everyone fares well on these keto diets.

      Four weeks of a very high fat and pretty high protein diet, and this 64 yrs quite thin lifetime athetic sort, but now slowed due to arthritis, and the insomnia nearly drove me mad. I became very high energy, to an unnatural/uncomfortable extent.
      Was sad to have to break the plan, as inflammation was definitely way down - however sleep is more essential to one's health than even diet. Too bad for me.

    Interesting stuff. I've known for decades that I just don't do well with carbs and my mother got me off of sugar when I was an adolescent. Luckily, I never got the "sweet tooth" syndrome and am normally revolted by sugar. As an adult, I noticed all the "added sugars" in addition to the embedded sugars in processed foods and have avoided processed foods like the plague. As to fast foods, like McDungalds, Booger King, Piss-in-a Hut, and Jack-off in the Box - forget about it.

I am currently writing an essay on diabetes for my professional body, and just making diagrams of glucose in its linear form and just how glycation takes place, usually on a lysine, and the resultant AGE and all that this leads to.
