Sub-Zero Refrigerator Clogged Drain Fix

- This video show the full length of a repair to a Sub-Zero refrigerator drain fix. The condensate drain often gets clogged with food or mold and then the condensate cannot escape through the drain into the evaporation tray/pan. This leads to the water pooling in the bottom of the refrigerator and then overflowing through the door onto the floor. This can cause significant damage to wood floors. The repair is actually quite simple and requires very little skill and few tools. I used a phillips-head screwdriver and a pipe cleaner as the only tools needed for this repair.

Bruce, like many others, thank you for taking matters into your own hands and making the video. It is not clear why the people at Sub Zero don't have a similar video, or at least some text guidance on this simple problem. (Maybe, its "Why should we help our customers when we can make an easy couple hundred and keep the service technicians busy?") Like you I first called to ask about the procedure to clean the drain, and was met with the standard answer: "you must call a service technician." Then I went through all the guidance in the Sub Zero literature finding the same dead end: "you must call a service technician". I then thought to try youtube to see if there was a video....and yours came up. ButtaBing, ButtaBang, ButtaBoom and I was done with the help of a bent paper clip. Thanks again.

I noticed a small puddle on my basement floor this morning and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. After tracing what was directly above turns out it was my built in Sub Zero, I knew it was a clogged drain but didn’t want to pull the whole unit out to clean it. You saved me, thanks.
You are my HERO Bruce! This is day two of seeing water leaking out of my Sub-Zero from the refrigerator side door hinge onto my hardwood floor. I took the kick plate off and did not see any water leaking from underneath. I took the bottom drawer out, found water and mopped it up, but did not know where the drain is located. I am going to buy some pipe cleaners tomorrow and clean my drain! Thank you very much for the video!
THANK YOU!!! This video was great. I was able to unclog the drain tube in our built in french door SZ using a pipe cleaner that I sent up from the underneath. I tried what others noted with their built in (press in on the back panel inside fridge to get to top of drain tube - but I was not able to press in and see that). Going up from the bottom worked like a charm. Before I did that I did put my phone back in there to take a little video that allowed me to see what it looked like and see how disgusting that tube looked! No doubt about our issue. I just stuck my hand back in there once the video gave me a location clue....and I felt the spot and sent up the pipe cleaner. HOLY SMOKES. The water that came chugging out. Definitely have towels ready! On a funny note....the alarm on your fridge during video always makes me jump up to check on our fridge. :). Thanks for the super video!!!!

Hello, Bruce, and thank you very much for your very clear, concise and, importantly, in focus video, “Sub-Zero Refrigerator Clogged Drain Fix.” Even the audio was superior. I kept telling my wife that you must be Martin Scorsese nephew!
Many other have tried to do what you did so well, God bless them, but with shaky cameras, blurry pictures and terrible audio...not to mention saying one thing at the same time they are showing another, well, I finally gave up until I stumbled upon you. So, many thanks from Chicago.
One thing you might consider adding, was exactly how you cleaned the tube. We see your red “cleaner” dangling down from what appears to be the back, but have lost our orientation...it least we had, and so could not really be sure what you we’re doing for a fairly long and very critical part of your video. Others who are more mechanical than I could no doubt figure this out, but suddenly both my wife and I were scratching our heads and wondering where the drain tube was and what it looked like...and also, what was clogging it.
Showing the tube, where it is exactly, how you fished it out and cleaned it would be a great addition to an already Golden Globe nomination.
One thing, when you win, which you no doubt will, please: no politics!

I have a similar problem with my 1997 Subzero 48, my wood floor is getting destroyed. I went to my local Bestbuy and saw a GE Monogram 48" and came to youtube to look for a review of the GE, then ran into your video. What great timing. I saved myself $12K or $300 plus with a service tech.
Models that begin with BI have a backplate that covers interior drain. You need to take the entire back plate off , draws, shelves etc to get to drain, which is why manual says you need a service technician.
I tried a Hail Mary…got eye dropper and some drain cleaner, pressed the back plate , squirted small amount of drain cleaner into drain trough . Train cleaner goes right to clog. Five minutes , heard water pouring into tray . Cleaned tray . Saved a bunch of money
You can also take the tray out from under the fridge and put the pipe cleaner up from the bottom. This should also do the trick if you don't have debris in the collection trough. I don't know which Subzero models have the back plate. Mine is a BI (builti-in) model and it doesn't have a back plate. They must have started or stopped using the back plate at a certain year.
What a Godsend! No one could come out to fix this for at least 2 weeks. One dispatcher I talked to relayed to me that my puddle symptom probably was a clogged drain. With that valuable tip, I found your video. Thank you very, very much. You saved us so much trouble $$$
and trouble.
The pipe cleaner worked great and I didn’t have to remove the panel to get it through the hole. About a year ago we had the same back up in water coming out the fridge and a repair person charged us 100’s to fix the issue. Disappointing to learn it was such a simple fix but won’t need a repair person for this task again. Thanks for the post.
Hi Bruce-thanks for the video. We actually had a SubZero tech come out to our house a couple of years ago for this problem and he showed us how to clear the clog which is caused by a gel/mucus /mold blob that accumulates in the drainage tube from the condensation. Your approach to resolving this issue is a little different than what the tech showed us, but we also incorporated your fix. He removed the two veggie bins, then pushed the back panel in just enough to get a small brush (pipe cleaner) into the drainage hole and scrubbed with the brush. This dislodged the junk into the pan and then allowed any water in the drainage trough to drain into the pan underneath. There is a metal rod -, about the diameter of a wire clothes hanger that lies in the drainage track and sticks about 3/4” into the drainage hole. This is supposed to prevent the “junk/gel/“ from forming. Be sure to replace this rod. THEN, go underneath the fridge, remove the tray which also had a significant amount of junk in it. Then clean out the tray. At this time you can also clean the drainage hole from the bottom up. We also gently cleaned the coils before replacing the clean tray. Thanks again!
Thank u for this video! Our built in’s back panel is very low and the drain hole is not visible. Like someone else commented below - i was bewildered as to where to find the hole for the pipe cleaner. But between your video and the comments below - i pushed the back panel (towards the middle of the fridge) a little with my hand and used microfiber towels to drain the water that had pooled the entire area right under the panel. (How i wished i had a turkey baster at that moment) i used a chop stick to really push the towels into the trough area to soak up the moisture. And finally i could make out a small hole on the left side of the panel. Used the 2 pipe cleaners that i had tied to make a super long one - and voila! The rest was history!
I have been battling this problem for Months! Ding dong the drip is dead! Small suggestion… in stead of a pipe cleaner if you can find a straw cleaner on a wire that works like a charm. Man was my tray NASTY! Not sure where all that biology came from. You’re the best!

I found the drain tube you mentioned. I had tried hot water with no luck. I saw a link about using compressed air and decided to get my can of dust off with the very thin outlet flexible tube. I was able to gently push it into the edge of the drain channel and ultimately into the drain tube opening. A few puffs and the clog was gone. I cleaned the lower tray which was a mess and pour a mild bleach and water solution into the back bottom below the crisper drawers.

Thank you for making this video Bruce, very well done and very helpful. I pushed the pipe cleaner up from the underside of the fridge up. The hole is all the way at the back, inside the width of the tray. With a flashlight under the fridge, I could easily see a water drop hanging from the hole. The hole seemed to be coated in a white grease. I twisted 2 pipe cleaners together to make sure I reamed a bigger hole. Previously I used a water bottle with a tube on it, with hot water, bleach and dish soap in the trough from inside the fridge. It worked once for about 6 months, then the last time is only stopped the leak for about a week. This method is so much easier and faster. Piece of cake, it took 10 minutes. Thanks again Bruce.
Lasted 3 years, just had to do it again. Use the pipe cleaners or you'll be doing it again in 6 months. Going to put some Bleach water on the back in a year, see if I can keep it from clogging. Works on the AC condensation pumps, maybe it will keep this from getting clogged again. Thanks again for making the video!
I had this exact same leak today, and was sort of having a mini panic attack (i just had to replace hardwood floors last year due to a diff. pipe leak).. so when I saw a pool of water today, i was thinking.. Oh shoot, NOT AGAIN!! I found your video, and pulled out my crisper drawer, and saw the trough and water pooled inside of it. Thank you so much for this video, it will probably save me $500 and hopefully, I will be able to get the clog out tomorrow as easily as you did!
Really helpful video, worked great for my BI-48SD/O. In my case, the back panel inside the fridge obscures the trough (hangs lower) more than the video shows but a small pipe cleaner was still able to be inserted into the drain tube without removing the panel.

Thank you!! I had the same problem of water pooling under the bottom drawer and running out the front onto my wood floor, and watching your video and 5 minutes of work fixed the problem. Subzero will only say that you need to schedule a professional service call to fix the problem, which is kind of ridiculous once you know how simple the problem is to fix.
Great video. Saved me a lot of headache. I had a panel blocking my trough but I just stuck a small bit of Romex in the back left corner. After I pushed it back and forth a few times, it unclogged everything. Thanks!

Subzero isn’t very helpful. All I needed to know is which side the drain was on. I couldn’t see it without removing panels. Your video showed where it was and I cleaned to right out.

Thanks for this video… my freezer drain was plugged with ice but it empties into this same pan. I sprayed some anti-mold on the water tray just to keep mold from building up if the water takes some food particles with it.
Bruce Ferguson, excellent video! I cannot service from the inside without removing the back panel .. But the drain tube is easily accessible after removing the drain pan from below ... its it the back right corner. Although I can't clean the trough for my fridge at least I've stopped the leaking. A million thanks!
I had to take the inside back panel off too to get at the drain hole, but if I had of know exactly where the drain hole is, as I do now, I believe I could have pushed the base of the panel in enough to feed a pipe cleaner into the drain hole to clean it. As such, it will be a lot easier to clean out next time. (The drain hole is in the far left side of the drain trough, a little over an inch to the right of the level of the bottom left screw securing the back panel on my fridge.) my man! My fridge was a little different so the drain tray is sort of concealed by the back panel, but if you push on that panel, you can wedge paper towel in there to soak up all the water and then find the little hole for the pipe cleaner.

Thank you so much! I replaced the door gasket thinking there was a leak, the unit is a 1999, in the door gasket but no. I had fished a plastic rod down the drain and nothing so I blew it out with compressed air. I felt/heard something hit the pan. I was a 3 inch long goo plug. Hopefully I only wasted $200 on the gasket and an hour putting it in.

10 thumbs down from over priced sub zero repair assholes. Wanted to charge me $275 to come out and diagnose this issue and then work on the "problem". Took me 1 minute tops. Thank you so much. Just an FYI, my fridge only became damn near impossible to open a few months back after it was opened and then closed. It appears to be the first indication of the clog for people out there. The door now opens after closure with no problems.

Huge thanks. This is a great video and I was able to unclog that drain. Just wasn't sure where exactly to poke the pipe cleaner or if my sparkly craft pipe cleaner was up to the task so I also used the hot water and bleach method (see a comment below) to loosen stuff up and suck it out with a turkey baster.

Cool video! A spider would not go up that tube it's too cold. An ant possibly if there was food droppings around the hole. Now roaches that's a whole different story.
I have this problem (icing on the bottom of my subzero fridge) and also possibly a second issue with my drain pan filling up quickly. I have to dump my drain pan to prevent overflowing at least once a month. Thank you for this video, but does anyone know why my drain pan is overflowing all the time?
Sounds like its producing too much condensation which might mean that the door seal is not operating properly. Other than that there could be a leak in the ice maker supply line or in the unit itself whereby the water is finding its way to the drain and subsequently the drain pan.

Sub Zero repair people say to flush drain periodically with Hydrogen Peroxide. Easy to do.
does anyone knows how to turn off the fridge? without unplug the outlet? the outlet is behind the fridge, I cant reach it, and I need to turn them off cuz I need to defrost it, thank you

Anyone have trouble removing pan....mine won't slide out and I'l afraid to use too much force
With mine, I had to push up, then it popped back down an then you slide it out.
It is not sturdy plastic, it bends, so unlikely you will break it with a little force.
Did you push the pipe cleaner through the hole from under the fridge and up or from inside the fridge and down?
I pushed the pipe cleaner up from under the fridge.
I went from inside the fridge and down through the hole. Easier to find inside the fridge than under IMO.
@@brewferg for my model, under worked way better. I would have had to take everything out of the refrigerator, including the back wall! Great video and helped me identify the problem. thanks for posting.
we have a subzero 20 yrs old, nothing but issues, they suck, have to oreder another better one
