  • Guess what! Some types of refrigerators have drains and those drains get clogged up with total YUCK over time. Today we are cleaning out the drain on a late 80s era Sub Zero refrigerator. The good news is that locating and cleaning the drain on other types of fridges should be fairly similar to this.

    OMG so happy I ran into you. My Sub Zero is "old" and built into my cupboards (meaning changing the frig is a major problem and expense) only the very, very expensive refrigerators meet the same measurement requirements. Following your instructions, the drain is draining (and the bottom is very clean, as per your suggestion). Instead of bleach, I used vinegar and it worked. Thank you

    Nice video -- thanks!
    Three additional tips:
    - In my case it was debris in the trough like leaves clogging a gutter, so be sure to clean the gutter above the hose first. In my model it was dried outer onion skins falling behind the glass shelf over the crisper, so don't store loose stuff on that shelf.
    - For the first six inches of the hose an unused tie-wrap is the perfect unclog device. I prefer to put it in head first. Stiffer and easier to handle than weed whacker line (which is a very smart idea for longer runs)
    - I used humidifier antibacterial instead of bleach; less chemical wear and tear on parts, although at once every 6 years :) probably it doesn't matter.

    Your solution also worked on our circa 2005 Sub-Zero 650. Thank you!

    Super helpful - thank you. My plumber told me that he didn't need to come out, that what I described was likely a clogged drain tube. I was grateful for his honesty and advice. But I didn't know where/how to locate the tube and clean it. Your video was so clear and helpful!

    Thanks much for this! I looked at several videos and this was the only one that clearly showed where the drain trough was in the first instance and was helpful about how to clean it. And it worked and fixed my problem!

    My model is almost the same as yours and the clean only take less than 10 minutes. I am using the head of FlexiSnake Drain Weasel Sink Snake Cleaner which is long enough to get through the whole drain pipe easily. Thanks for your video!

    That was a fun video - something different! I live in a house built in the 1890s and can relate to older houses and appliances needing that kind of TLC. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy your videos!

      In your 590, do you ever get clogs near the water tank?

    • @johnnybarrett5799
      @johnnybarrett5799 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only clogs we get are in the drain tube running to the drain pan. Cleaning the tube is now part of my maintenance plan.

    Lol - I thought the first thing you was going to want to do (when you opened the door) was to eat all that food so it didn't go bad when you turned off the refrigerator (lol) have a good day! Good video!

    Off topic, but I’m shocked to see someone have similar floors. I’m just wondering how you mop of them and what you use because I know that type of flooring can be a huge pain!!

    Hi Tamara, Wow that fridge of yours is old school. Good tip about using weed wacker line to snake out a small drain line. Wondering why you didn't pour a cup of water in the tray to make sure the drain was totally clear. Maybe you did that and just didn't show it. So how does your refrigerator defrost? Most use a dehumidifier and do it that way but since you have the coils inside the cabinet that probably wouldn't work.

    • @MonkeysKnow
      @MonkeysKnow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did double check the lie down below to make sure it was clear but didn’t show it because we would have found up with an 8 hour video. 😂 Just kidding, but the bottoms are a pain to get off these. These are, thankfully, frost free!

    Thank you,! I’ve done this before, but I saw another drain tube near the freezer side and it is leaking water. There isn’t a drain pan underneath so I can’t figure out why this is happening. Do you know if there 2 drains under the subzero 690? I turned the water off that goes to the ice maker, but water is still dripping under a drain tube by the freezer. I cleared the tube near fridge. Thanks again!

    • @MonkeysKnow
      @MonkeysKnow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am sorry I took so long to reply! I was waiting on a response from someone who knows more than me about this. 🙂 As far as they know, there should not be two drains under the 690. If the tube is not from the water line to the freezer and it’s an intermittent leak (as opposed to a slow trickle), it is possible a drain line popped off the condenser and is sweating under the fridge instead of eventually making its way back to the actual drain tube. If it IS a constant trickle, is there a water filter in the fridge for the ice maker or dispenser? If it doesn’t seem to be hampering the function of the fridge in any way, you might get an additional drain pan for this tube so it does not do any damage. I hope this helps!

    Important: The copper heat exchanger tube may come in contact with the liquid in the condensation pan. If bleach is used to kill algae or bacteria clogging your drain be sure to rinse and pull out and rinse the pan. Otherwise imagine the high pressure side copper tubing sitting in acid. How long will it take to kill your system?

    Here's a better idea, you won't need to clean the drain every 6 months. On Amazon there is a product call Pan Tablets, item number AC-912 they are like $4.50 for a pack of six..my motto think smarter and not work harder..
