Much respect for fighting your way out of that. Glad you're still around.
And I've gotta say, you took 2 Friday the 13th movies worth of stab wounds, and you look fantastic. I'd give whoever did the stitch work a permanent spot on my Christmas card list.

One other person to thank, my wife. She rubbed aloe on my scars twice a day, fed me, helped me go to bathroom and bathed me. She never allowed me to feel sorry for myself. You truly don’t know a person until they step up and help out like she did. Thanks to all who helped me, my wife and I just celebrated 29 years together.

All. Thank you again for your comments, words of encouragement and honor. I wanted to tell you that the photos of the folding knife and the expanded bullet are from my incident. They are not props or something Federal shot into a gelatin block or water. I cannot say that the HST bullet I used that day is the only bullet out there that would have done the job. What I can tell you is as a Sniper, it only took one shot (thank God) and the bullet came to a rest right where it was supposed to. The design of the bullet, the fact it was a 180 grain and not 165 grain is what kept the bullet contained. I am not proud of what I had to do to stay alive. In fact I feel bad that his parents and friends are no longer able to see him. All because he made a bad choice and tried to take me away from my family and friends. Thank you all and thank you Federal for designing a bullet that does what you say it will do. No disrespect to any other bullet manufacturer out there. Agent William “Bill” Gray

Each chance we get to discard "old" carry ammo is another short extension of our peace. That one round that doesn't make that trip because of that one reason, it is such a heavy round. Thank God for that round. As heavy as it had to be, it is eye opening and encouraging to know that such valor exists and that evil has such a contender. God bless you and yours and thank you for sharing your incredible story.

Amazing story! I hope you're still fighting the good fight and living your best life. The responsible, honest and sane gun owners/EDC hope more than anything, that we are not put in a position like this!
Unfortunately, too many idiots out there think that their gun makes them invincible, so they have the right to go around agitating or starting something that they can just walk away from. Those same people that act like a gun gives them superpowers, probably never trained a day in their lives. Other people want to live in a fairytale land that the police (who they wanted to defund not too long ago) will protect them the second something bad actually happens to them. . I truly wish the 1st group of people didn't exist. They make all gun owners look bad.. the 2nd group is getting taught a valuable lesson on respecting LE. When something terrible like this happens, as responsible gun owners if you are not preparing/drilling, aka practicing, *often!*
      Good luck in the afterlife.
I'm sorry for the long rant.
      I always do this 🤣
I wanted to just say; amazing story of survival!
And, I'm super jealous of that 229 Legion😍 or is that a 226?

This ended with the good guy winning; thank God for that and the lessons learned here.
But as an ad for HST ammo (which btw I think is excellent and I carry it)I offer this thought:
It was a point-blank brain shot from under the chin. There would probably be a resulting 3 or 4" hole in the top of the perp's head from expanding gasses, etc. starting from under the chin, the muzzle even in contact with the skin. Brains and guts splatter the ceiling of the squad car. Naturally this bad guy would die instantly.
But here's the catch - almost any reasonable anti personnel round might have done the same job at contact range.

  • @jmurphy68463

First off, thank God for this man's survival. I'm glad he made it out of this horrifying situation. 2nd, I'd LOVE to see a Federal HST shotgun slug someday! This story just proves to me AGAIN why I only carry Federal HST 124 grain +P in my concealed carry gun. I carried Speer Gold dot after it was recommended by 2 LEO family friends and they said they carried it on duty. I soon started hearing great things about Federal HST and Hornady Critical. I bought 6 clear ballistic gel blocks and started testing. Hands down, no contest, the Federal HST was the clear winner time and time again. The penetration and the expansion were so uniform it was almost hard to believe! The expanded bullets ALL looked just like the one shown on the box. Layers of denim and other clothing etc yielded the same uniform results. I stopped carrying Speer Gold dot that very day. Hornady Critical also beat out the gold dot FYI, but was nowhere near as uniformly amazing as the Federal HST. I will NOT carry anything else. I fully trust my and my family's lives with this ammo. Thank you guys for developing such an amazing round. All Federal ammo is my favorite, shotgun shells especially(I shoot more shotgun than anything). But you literally just can't beat the HST. You guys ROCK!

    • @RetiredSA
      @RetiredSA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you sir. I read every comment here and like to reply when I get the time to. You are right! The HST will be uniform and IF you shoot the person where it matters, it will stop them. Another consideration is my gun barrel was only 3” away from his head when I shot him! Where did the slug go? It stayed in his head!! Why? Because it expanded exactly as Federal advertises. In fact, if you watch the video again, the bullet that is expanded, is the actual bullet from his head during the autopsy. It was given to me along with the knife he stabbed me with. After I was cleared from the shooting.

Bless you and thank you for your service!!! It's a crying shame what is happening to law enforcement today! I'm in Portland and it's a mess here! I was at a taco wagon this summer and there was five cops there eating to I asked if I could join them and thanked them for there service it has become a very bad neighborhood since 2020! I asked how I could help and they said vote them out!! I said I sure as hell tried!!! Then I asked if it was time that citizens armed themselves and patrolled their neighborhoods!! All of them gave me a wink and nod!!! Wow!! I couldn't believe it! But at the same time!! It's really like that here!!! The crime rate has increased 800% and they're shootings and murders every single night!!! It's a crying shame what's happened to this once beautiful and safe City! In fact in the 1990s it was considered one of America's safest and most beautiful and clean cities!!! Now a person has to carry a gun to take their garbage out!!! Unbelievable times we are living in all I can say is I back the blue and thank you!!!!!

I am a retired LE firearms instructor.
In my opinion the round of choice for a 9mm is the tried and true 124gr.+P Speer Gold Dot.
    Second choice would be HST.
Though the HST performs like the Gold Dot I would like to see more actual street shooting data on the HST before I would consider switching from Gold Dot..

This is good training, many smaller agencies lack the proper training or have officer safety or in service role play scenarios dealing with interviewing a suspect. This knife shouldn’t have been on him period. You toss a suspect, you don’t have them in cuffs you better make sure their unarmed before you take them for a ride along. I bet their was plenty of finger pointing. I am glad he survived. Officer Safety, nothing wrong with checking someone for weapons. That HST was recovered from the top of his cranium.

Funny thing is, he wasn’t wearing much for a 16 degree, below 0 day. He was searched at the residence and again at the Sheriff’s Office. One place no one thinks to search are the shoes. Also, no one gets into the crotch as much as we should. There was no finger pointing. I took ownership of the failure to find the knife. I did not search him before he got in my squad. It’s my fault. I won’t pin that on someone else just to make me look good.

    So, thoughts:
    1) This was an advertisement for a hollowpoint bullet, but I think that was one of the lesser factors in this guy’s survival.
    2) Remarkable to the point of miraculous that he survived all that.
    3) Most important takeaways:
    a) Have empty hand vs. knife skills
    b) Learn to employ left handed techniques, including a left handed drawstroke
    c) Appendix carry could’ve made the fight concluded via his firearm end more quickly

Great comments and thoughts. I and hopefully everyone reading your comments follow them.
Just a response to your comment about appendix carry. First, for concealed carriers, I agree with you to a point. This guy had my right wrist with his left hand. He pinned it to the seat behind my back. It happened so quick and violently that I could only use my left hand and forearm to block his blows. I had to continue that way until he screwed up. Once he did, I flipped the switch and went from defense to a quick and violent offense. I was the maddest I’ve ever been.

I remember the dismal performance of the Winchester 147 controlled expansion from the 90’s.
I believe many agencies wanted a standard pressure load. The +P and +P+ ammunition caused more recoil and accelerated wear on service pistols.

He was in the front passenger seat. He had been searched twice. Once on scene and once at the Sheriff’s office.
