I know I have said it before but it is worth saying again. I love how you explain stuff to people so that they can do it too without absolutely needing the special tools. Of course its probably easier with the right tools and since you run a shop you have them to make your daily life easier but being able to work occasionally on a bike with a simple standard set of tools is helpful. Thanks again for the helpful videos and always keeping them fun.
Starting my first restore ever. Remember doing this stuff as a kid in the 70's, but my brother did most of the work. Nice to learn that I can do this all without fancy (expensive) tools. Also, your ghetto bearing press ROCKS! Thanks for the inspiration and confidence to tackle my first 1969 Schwinn Racer - 3 speed.
Thanks so much. Your videos are so helpful. Especially like this one, it's kind of hard to afford all those fancy tools when you're also trying to buy the parts to begin with! Best of luck to you and keep up the good work!
always excellent videos, thanks bikemanforu i watch you early, your up beat personality makes me in a good mood, plus i always learn something worth while
Edan, You can absolutely do a fixed gear conversion. I have done a few Varsity conversions, and the only thing that you will have to look out for is that you may have a difficult time with chainrings, and gear ratio, because it uses a one piece bottom bracket and crankset. For about $15, you can buy coverters that allow you to put on any crankset you wish. Good luck.
thank you for sharing your experience ,next time i will do it by my self . to day cycling is so trendy ,makes price of service and bike component getting expensive .but for painting bike i prefer using acrylic car paint which can give more glossy result and looks its hardness of acrylic.
yeah i have that problem to, i gotta black eye renegade and i was looking all over for how to install a bottom bracket for a 3 piece on a one piece bike, thank you
Don't see whats up with all the hate. The method works and requires little to no cash spent on proprietary tools. That is what I like about Bikeman, trying to help the average joe out with bike mechanics. The methods may the not be the most sophisticated but they work and generally cost little to no money. If someone people feel like investing in a professional grade shop set of tools for themselves then that is fine but many do/can not. Thanks Bikeman for passing on your tricks of the trade.
I was wondering about the bottom brackets from a 1960s sears flightliner everything looks the same but the cones lol wear the bearings ride on are different is their a video on that kind?
If you don't use the spacer you put a little bit more pressure on the bearings. A lot of people say they won't last as long. A friend of mine rides without a spacer for a pretty long time and never had any problems...but i think if you have a spacer, you should use it.
Hi bike man my nae is Michael and for awhile now i have had trouble witha part of the bottom bracket as i am trying to relace it.I will try my best to describe the part i am having trouble with if you exclude the threded part for the pedal and where to draw a circle upon where the lock ring threads onto then draw another circle inside that and just inside that you have a curved lip that sits out with an adjacent lip opposite it so that two lips that sit out i tred a hammer and chisel but no luck
I have a mechanik bottom bracket and new spindle for it and stuff so I put it in the frame and I thought I did it proper but I noticed when I tried to tighten the spindle bolts just even a little bit, the cranks wouldn't spin really free. I took it out and forgot the tube spacer so I went ahead and put the tube spacer in but it still doesn't spin really good. The bottom bracket came with extra spacers so I'm guessing I have to add more to the inside of the bottom bracket??
Great tutorial! Thanks bike man! My only problem is, how much should I pay for these bottom brackets including the 3 piece cranks ( I have a 1 piece crank, and I don't really know the difference from them aside from installation and 3 piece kinda looks like for mountain bikes?)
might be a bit late for ya but 1 piece cranks are weak because anywhere metal has been bent creates a weak spot, therefore 2 piece, 2.5 piece or 3 piece cranks are alot stronger because they are straight pieces bolted to straight pieces. And they look cooler. If you can help it DO NOT RIDE 1 PIECE CRANKS! As for price where i am in Australia bottom brackets go for about 20-30$ and good cranks anywhere from 180$-250$
do you have any tips for someone who wants to crank less and gain more speed? I get exhausted too easily when cranking and I dunno if upgrading my cranks would help or not
No that hasn't got much to do with your cranks though if you look at racing cranks they are a fraction longer for more leverage on each push, it's how big your sprocket/chainwheel and driver(little cog on the back wheel) are. If you want to gain speed quicker and easier look at getting a sprocket with teeth between 22-28. And i'm guessing you might have a big sprocket with something like 40 teeth, you will have a higher top speed and it will be easier to hold that speed, but as you know it is harder to push I always ride a 25T sprocket and 9t driver, as are most standard bmx's. If the gearing isn't your problem, you probably need to build some leg muscle lol
I took my bike apart to paint the frame but Left the bearings and bottom tube in. But when I stick my finger in the bottom bracket it rattles around. Do I need spacers for that
So i found a bike from when i was a kid with 3 piece cranks with unsealed bearings like 1 piece cranks style in the bottom bracket. WHats the deal with that?
can a unsealed bottom bracket be upgraded to a sealed bottom bracket? i would like to know because sealed bearings (to me ) are a much simpler way to go.
Awesome, diffenetly know ur bikes if you can answer back I want to make a fixie out of a (72)schwinn varsity I know it's heavy but I luv my bike is it feasible to do an maybe what r some good parts to get its my first fixie so I'm kinda new to this thx.:)
Sounded to me like the spacers were still rattling after you installed the spindle. This indicates you needed more spacers. The purpose of the spacers is to keep the inner bearing races from getting pushed inward when you cinch the crank arm spindle bolts. If the inner races get pushed inwards they will bind the ball bearings and cause friction and premature wear or even binding.
hey man I have a bmx but it's a mongoose and the berrings are fake like it's a weird kinda ball Bering bracelet that goes into a cup. do you guys sell berrings and if you do do you ship? I really really need real berrings for my new frame
bike man i have the over sized american bottom bracket and i i have the adapters to make so a mid will work but i have the same problem with the spacer being to small but i don't have enough spacers if i put it and my local bike shop dosent sell indaviual spacers is there an some other way todo it. will washers work?
What can I do to repair my problem of when I go down a steep hill on my bike I hit the brakes and I can stop but after I stop braking my brakes are still gripping or stopping what can I grease or adjust to stop my brakes from" sticking close"
Bikeman, in order to waste time answering haters, disconnect comments, it will safe you precious time! I gave 5 euros at my local bikeshop just to lub my french bike, I would save it if I saw this earlier :D
For BMX, just use a 16lb maul. Start at the headtube, and once you've flattened all the way to the back, you can fold it up to take less space in the dumpster.

Why are people saying he's annoying or irritating?? I find his ideas funny. :)

Thank you! Your always here for bike help :D
Finally someone who knows how to work on a bike and not beat it to death with a hammer. You should make a video on how to get the bearings out haha.
can you guys do a full build as in welding the frame to putting the bike together
Don't see whats up with all the hate. The method works and requires little to no cash spent on proprietary tools. I tried looking but couldnt find it. All i saw was your 1 piece crank install and this video. What playlist is it in?
I was wondering about the bottom brackets from a 1960s sears flightliner everything looks the same but the cones lol wear the bearings ride on are different is their a video on that kind?

THX U daman

Good stuff...Bike man is awesome!

Great tutorial! Thanks bike man!

Is this method possible on an alloy road bike for a press fit bottom bracket?
how do you know if you need the extra washers with the spacer or not, thanks?
thats a good one..

Where do I get those spacers from for my bb since it wont fit?

You gotta buy a sealed american bottom bracket kit. On ebay they got em from redline. ONly a couple brands make em since its old tech.
What can I do to repair my problem of when I go down a steep hill on my bike I hit the brakes and I can stop but after I stop braking my brakes are still gripping or stopping what can I grease or adjust to stop my brakes from" sticking close"
dippster357 your probably need new cables or clean up your handle
Paha i love the fact the camera man/girl laughed when you mentioned the name of the second hammer.

I like his hair 😂😂😂
my bottem bracket broke and I need a new one do u no were I could get a deasent one
For BMX, just use a 16lb maul. Start at the headtube, and once you've flattened all the way to the back, you can fold it up to take less space in the dumpster.
