    I am still a big believer in using a vintage 1970's or 80's steel 10 or 12 speed frame and building it up. There are plenty around and you can find all of the parts that you see on these "out of the box" fixies. I have done many good one's for under $200. Check Ebay and Amazon for your parts.

      Buying a quality double-butted cromo track frame with minimal baseline components isn't that hard if you're willing to shell out like $250-$300 USD for a used or ~$450 new. People just get caught up into the hi-ten shit because so many articles/blogs are praising Pure Fix/Critical Cycles as some sort of good budget "fixie" when really they're a half step above department store bikes. If you're gonna shell out the money for a hi-ten Pure Fix you might as well stop there and AT LEAST shell out the same amount for an Aventon since they're the same price but aluminum, much more reliable than hi-ten, and most LBS that carry Pure Fix completes sell Aventon completes at the same price, give or take $30 or so (in my experience).

    I get alot of flack on this vid coming up on 100'000 views... Half and half on the likes and dislikes. I think the bikes had a short life... Saw them once in the season for a little brake in tuneup. I know there neighborhood was flooded with 4+foot of sea water. I bet the bikes ended up in the dumpster with all other garage stuff. #Superstormsandy

      Those bikes are trash. I would have given those bikes the same evaluation. The thing that pisses me off about those cheap bikes with deep "aero" rims is they have to put ridiculous ,super long , hard to find schrader valve tubes. These stores like Wallmart, Dunhams, ect. will sell this junk and when a person has a flat they call #huronbikerepair because these stores do not sell said super long valve tubes. When they show up and I put a long Presta valve in, they don't understand that that particular tube is hard for me to source. Then I want to let them know that they will be coming back on a regular basis because they bought a piece of shit but I just close my mouth and smile. Sorry for the rant! It was a good vid by the way!

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why is a shot over the handlebars so sure? If you are on tarmac, the tire should skid and not get enough grip to throw you over the handlebars. On sand or dirt, only having a front brake will throw you over the handlebars because the tire digs into the ground and then there is enough force throw you over bars. Even with a rear brake, you weight shifts forward when you are stopping. Even with my fat ass, the rear will skid because so much weight has been shifted forward. But fixies do suck anyway.

    • @MrWilliamSandoval
      @MrWilliamSandoval 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      tarstarkusz
      you are 200% more likely to fly over the handlebars on tarmac than dirt. Dirt slides. Tarmac doesn't.

    I bought my fixed gear off the internet, it was the logical place to get started with that style of riding, and ya know what? It changed my life. I'm 18 with no driver's license, and cycling is one of the best parts of my life. And I could smoke any overweight snob with a mullet on my "Piece of junk" internet fixie anyday.

    looks like this guy could use more seat time on a fixed gear bike. or any bike really. Any cheapo bike will work for his needs. Definitely cheap bikes in the video though. I own one similar. I bought it to see if I would stick with it. now I'm slowly upgrading the basic stuff. Then in a month or two I'll transfer my nicer parts over to a higher quality frame and fork. So far I've got a high quality seat, chain, and clipped pedals.

    Years ago I got a brand new sears 3 speed with caliper brakes front and back. Went as fast as I could down the clay gravel road by the house, slightly downhill. Probably going 20+ MPH when I clamped down on both brakes. I was used to coaster brakes. And I done the superman and slip and slide on palms and knees. But was more worried about the bike, which survived intact. That was a lesson that I only needed once.

  • @kevinbacon3289

    Got one of the Critical brand fixie. Same sorta quality/price. I got it because they were trending so the price is competitive and I needed a bike asap. Another main reason is just doing street/dirt as a kid made me want a single gear with a freewheel hub. I dont like the non freewheel side of the hub; tried it once to see if i can ride backwards and just havent tried ever again. Got rear breaks for it because of mentioned 'endo' problems that could arise at top speed emercency breaking. I beat the living shit out of it for about 9 months as a courier in Philly. Took it over cobblestone more than a few times at high speeds and it's still holding. I will mention that I constantly replace spokes and other parts though. I did snap the bolt on the rear brake once, had to replace the tires and brake pads near immediately but the main parts are holding fine. I'm probably just lucky it hasnt catastropically failed at 25mph lane splitting box trucks and busses downtown. Also, if you dont have the proper tools, understand proper torque for certain parts, or are just generally not confident trying to put it together yourself, save your life or serious injury and have a reputable shop put it together for you. Ask them to double check, and if need be, regrease/align/tighten the pre-assembled parts. Hopefully they will just do that 2nd part anyway knowing they are initally slapped together and potentially very dangerous in said state.

    I use a front brake on a fixed and along with back pressure I've never gone over the handlebars or even came close..also I think you are over estimating the quality of that front brake there's no way that brake stops well enough to send a teddy bear over the handlebars..it's just going to slow you down..poorly even if it's freewheel

    The cheap fixies just kill the fun of trying to make a good bike having a low budget. I've been working for quite a month now to find good pieces together and a good old french retro frame. It just is so much more rewarding riding a bike you've put so much effort in.. same for people who know a lot about bike, the knowledge is rewarding.

    I got a fixed and I use it as a training bike and use my 24 speed in cycling events. fixed gets you in great shape because single gear has no mercy on you either you have the strength to go against wind or hills or you dont. no gearing down.

    I wanted to build a 1800's bike, wood rims, fixed gear, no brakes, then I learned of fixies, they are almost the same thing, (but much less money then building a 1800's ride) google some of the old bikes, it may surprise you. They didn't have the technology to make freewheels in the 1800's.
    I'm 69 yrs old, I enjoy riding a fixed gear bike, a great experience to find out how bikes have progressed, where they came from, I have quite a few bikes, I ride mountain bikes, Fat, and cross-country, I even race some, I always wonder how it would be to take a fixed bike on the trail,, someday, maybe for my 80th birthday.. LOL
    My everyday bike is a handmade Dutch commuter, Workcycle Opafiets, awesome bike, but those fixed bikes are a learning trip, not as fun as a fat bike, ( fat is fun, you smile when you get on one, and your still smiling when you get off) but still very interesting, challenging, just another kind of bike.
    I never had brakes on my fixed bikes, I don't need no stinking brakes.. LOL

  • @87lancerguy
    @87lancerguy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a VERY similar bike I got on ebay. While they aren't super great bikes out of the box, they are a good starting point for someone on a budget. Change the crank set, wheelset, stem, adjust gear ratios, and throw some clipless pedals on....you've got yourself a decent budget fixie. Then you can save for an aluminum frame and transfer all the parts to it! That's my plan!

  • @MrJeffbbc
    @MrJeffbbc 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is it a bad idea to buy a cheap bike and upgrade the parts as they break down? Or is it just better to spend the money on a quality bike the first time around?

    • @dickjohnson5025
      @dickjohnson5025 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Chrispy1990ful
      @Chrispy1990ful 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrJeffbbc Depends on you and depends on your bike. I myself got a hyper havoc which is a cheap Walmart bike. I got it for about $140. It works decent. And was surprisingly well built seeing as it came from wally world. The frame is actually very good even though its heavy (it's a full suspension mountain bike so that's to be expected) the welds may not be pretty but they sure are strong. The tires aren't too bad but I have heard some bad things so they are kinda hit and miss. The shocks are surprisingly good. It comes with some decent Shimano grip shifters. Now for the ugly. The handlebars are a bit narrow for my taste and the brake lever housings are cheap plastic. The grips would not stay on for shit. I ended up trashing them before I even got new grips and went bare bar. The front derailleur kinda sucks. The chain rings and cassette are some off brand named "shun" appropriately named.... I can get some brake levers and a new handlebar of an old bike free. Lets say $100 for new chain rings, $30 for a new cassette, $30 bucks for a new chain and $35 for a good derailleur. In the end you can have a very good bike for about $300. Not anything amazing with top of the line shifters, disk brakes and quick release wheels mind you. But, compare that to a full suspension TREK which costs about $2000 and you have saved a LOT of cash! I'm not saying that a trek wouldn't be better, but not everyone can spend a couple thousand dollars on a bike. And keep in mind your gonna love a bike that you did some real work on yourself way more than something you bought the way it is.

  • @gorillasocks
    @gorillasocks 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not that people fly off their bikes, they aren't bracing themselves for the deceleration. You would probably need a disc brake in the front to actually throw you off the bike.
    I practically never use the rear brake on my road bike. I swapped the cabling so the right STI controls the front brake.

    Awww. Now I feel bad. I bought a $100 fixie from Wal-Mart. I stripped it down COMPLETELY, greased everything that should be, adjusted bearings so it rolls nice and smooth, even took the tires apart to straighten the valve stems/rim strap. Inspected EVERYTHING and it rides really nice. I'll start upgrading as things start to break/wear out. But for $100, I got a nice frame to work from when the time comes.

    I must say BikeMan. I bought a similar bike online and three months into owning it I actually like it. The freewheel came busted and the brakes are cheap (useless really), but the frame is durable and it is a fast little bugger on flats.

      im told that i need to muster up some compassion for the navigationally challenged. My dear old departed dad always said " its a damn good thing for you that stupid ain't painful.So, thats a fixie,huh? and all this time I thought a fixie was a cute way of describing politely that your Heroin was wearing off,or the 20 or so death racers i got piled up in the yard ,all absent of various components critical to health and safety would be well described as fixies. wrong again.I think I'll just have to go out in the yard and pick out one of them fixie's and head down down and see if I can score a fixie. better get back to my post.

    Fixies should be cheap, man. It's cool that they're getting trendy and more high end bikes/parts are available but building a fixie from garbage (like mine is) is cheap and cool. It may look cheap-ass to the hipsters but it rides like I want it to, cost me less than 150 (mostly tires and pedals) total but best of all, I ride it. I'm not sure if this comment has anything to do with the video (2 cents please).

    Because there is the misconception among Americans that only the rear brake should be used (because "it's more effective" and "if you use the front brake then you're going to go over the handlebars"), and because most people are right handed, they put the rear brake on the right side. For consistency, if there's only a front brake, then it goes on the left side.

However, it's a lot more fun to build your own fixie, and of course, it will be made of quality steel or aluminum with quality parts. And you can find a quality steel framed bike for about $50 on craigslist.

    hey bikemanforu, im considering getting a specialized langster pro track bike. is there a big noticable difference between a street fixie and a track bike like the langster pro? also, great videos, love them!

    • @benbraceletspurple9108
      @benbraceletspurple9108 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. The bikes you saw in this video can go on gravel. Your track bike can not. Having rode that exact specialized and owning a street fixie I can tell you track bikes must stay on the road. You will pumle the frame and crank if you take it on a trail or the sidewalk. Track bikes are meant for the track. That being said, track fixies with 23 mm tires or smaller can outperform other fixies with speed. They sacrifice versatility and crash resistance for efficiency and speed. So don't take it of curbs and don't crash on it, but feel free to push 40mph on flat land!

    The majority of your stopping power comes from the front brake

    • @nigahiga6400
      @nigahiga6400 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Front and rear brakes make for better and safer stopping. Slamming hard on a front brake can and will cause you to go over the handlebars, especially on a road bike. In some areas, front and rear brakes are required by law. With both front and rear brakes, stopping power will be superior to a front brake only configuration.

    • @Chrispy1990ful
      @Chrispy1990ful 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shade Thomas Very true. Do keep in mind that if your going too fast and slam on the front brakes you will go over the handlebars (flip the bike forward). Which is very likely to happen on this bike as it is set to coast and you can't use the pedals to slow your momentum like on a typical fixie.

      You can't compare the two in my opinion. You have to be a strong rider to handle a direct drive bike and be on top of your game. Some times I like to coast and smell the roses. Thanks for your comment. Are you just getting into biking??

    Don't know why someone would use the freewheel if they only had a front brake. When it is fixed you use the pedals to slow down/skid the back wheel.

  • @Evol_lov3
    @Evol_lov3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pulling the front brake while going full speed is the first thing you’re taught not to do when learning to ride a bike. If you crank down on the brake that’s your fault, not the bike’s.

      For the money (MSRP around $400), NO!!! I had a chance to ride one of these Sole single speed/fixie bikes. They're unimpressive, and the build quality is quite poor. Bikeman is not exaggerating or making things up. They really are heavy for a fixed gear/single speed.
      If you want to ride a single speed or fixed gear, buy yourself an old-school 10 speed road bike, one with horizontal dropouts (most road bikes of the 70's have these). Horizontal dropouts allow you to set the proper chain tension. Converting to a fixie or single speed is not very difficult, and it can be done easily as a weekend project. I just sourced a nice 70's Peugeot road bike for a friend who is going to convert it to a fixie. Scour Craigslist and other classifieds, or post a wanted ad. More people have old bikes than you might think.
      Converting an old road bike to a fixie will cost less than a Sole, and you'll get a bike that is lighter, safer, and better in terms of quality. You can also safely use a freewheel single-speed on converted road bikes, thanks to front and rear brakes. I honestly did not feel safe on the Sole with the freewheel and only a front brake.
      Now if you want a multi-purpose bike, there are other options. $400 will buy a nice bike, like a Giant Cypress DX, or a Raleigh Detour. Maybe not the flashiest bike on the block, but it will give you a dependable method of transportation. Plus gearing is welcome if you live in a hilly area. I'd hate to try riding up the 6% grade that I live by on a single speed.

  • @NathanCorachea
    @NathanCorachea 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    People actually don't fly off their bikes when they hit the brakes really hard if they're riding a fixed gear. Since it is fixed, the cyclist feels more of a connection to the pedals and are able to prepare themselves so they do not fly off when slamming on the front brake. People only fly off in this situation if they are riding some sort of bike that can free wheel.

    Single speed bike is all you need in the city. It will also make you much fitter because you have to climb with the same gear you use for descents. I've never been fitter in my life and I pass everybody on the road. Nobody ever passes me, but they all have gears.

    Bikeman, What about the custom Bigshotbikes? Can I learn to do bunnyhops and stair climbing without popping those tires? They are 700c x 23c. I want a fixed gear that I can use to learn some tricks, but don't plan to be jumping anything huge or getting too crazy. It's mostly for commuting. I am also looking at SE Draft Lite. I am attracted to the flashy colors but can let go of that for fun trick riding. I still want a nice commute, so I am liking the look of the hybrids.

      It's not garbage sir. People who ride fixed (like myself) are generally pretty safe, sure we seem stupid for riding fixed and not having brakes but were in control of ourselves and any experienced rider can stop on a dime.

    • @BigJayBrownTown
      @BigJayBrownTown 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      most of the time, a car or bike is only as safe as the rider. Fixies have been around for over a century, most of us grew up on them. most kids (including my childhood self) understand how to control a fixie, and are pretty safe doing so.
      I also don't need 21 speeds, and glob of moving parts to break down.

      +Jay McNeely Actually, I think you meant most of us grew up on "Single Speeds", not "Fixies". The former being where you can stop peddling and coast and push rearward for braking. "Fixies" on the other hand keep rotating the peddles as long as the rear wheel is turning...
