  • Here is how to replace 1 piece BMX bike cranks with a 3 piece crank and a sealed bottom bracket. I also show how to Make a bearing press. It is easy to replace your 1 piece bike crank with a sealed bottom bracket and 3 piece cranks. Make sure you get
    The right size sealed bottom bracket for your bike. The one in the video is American size. That is probably what size bottom bracket you have as well. The bottom bracket in the video is a Mechanik American kit with 19 mm bearings. The cranks are Sunday Saker cranks with a 19mm spindle.
    Here is where you can buy a sealed bottom bracket and crank kit on Amazon:

    Here is a 25 tooth sprocket to fit the crank set.

    I believe the sleeve in the middle is more than just a dirt cove, it also provides a stop for the inner bearing races, so that when the crank bolts are torqued you don't put a side load against the bearings. Thanks for a nice crisp How-To. also "shut up Jimmy " has been added to the things I yell at the shop. haha.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can get an eight spline spindle for it. You’d have to check with the bike shop to make sure, but because it is a brand new bike, they probably use the same cranks on their sealed bearing versions.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have the bike anymore, but I think it was a 19 mm spindle. The most important thing is to make sure you buy a spindle that is the same diameter as the inside diameter of the bearings.

    Cool vid! I have a question. Can these crankarms be used with a chainring used on a regular one piece crank? And what about an offset chainring? I am asking because I am considering upgrading the drivetrain on my Felt cruiser. :)

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be able to drill holes in the chain ring if you could get it off the old crank. But it would be better to just buy a new chain ring with the new cranks. Sometimes it just makes more sense to buy a whole new bike, as these parts can get expensive.

    • @eltoro747
      @eltoro747 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hoohoohoblin I guess I wasn't quite clear. My Felt cruiser (tank frame) has originally one piece crank. It also has offset rear sprocket and an offset chainring, because I run a 3" wide tire. So I want to know if I can still use the offset chainring if I switch to 3 piece cranks.

    So any 19 mm conversation kit will work with any American style bottom bracket?

    i recently switched from the old school ball bearings and ordered a redline american 22mm bb, the center tube will slide over the spindle but, the spindle is threaded and will not slide through the sealed cartridges...any suggestions? its an old school DK General Lee with an iron cross 3-piece, 1995-99 model i believe, are some spindles just not compatible for a bb?

      I think you need to buy a new axle, built for sealed bearings. Probably new cranks too, but maybe not,

    I'm using 1 too with about 52-4 teeth sized sprocket... so I cant effort 2 or 3... Is there a way to use small sprocket like 24 or any without changing cranks or making it ugly??.

      @hoohoohoblin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sprocket can be changed. I made a video showing how it fits on. th-cam.com/video/ZF8RF-eD9-k/w-d-xo.html

    My first bmx bike was American unsealed bb. Over and over the bearings would fall apart and usually end in the cranks locking up and tossing me over the bars. Finally i wised up and bought a bike with mid sealed. I don't know why i never got this kit. It would have saved me some headaches.

      +Billy Celli I had the same troubles with bottom brackets, and I was kind of surprised to find that someone actually made a conversion kit.

    Do a day at the skate park video

      @hoohoohoblin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea. The kids haven't been to the skate park since we built a half pipe in the back yard. We should go back there and shoot some video now that they have some skills.

    i have a unsealed three piece crank set but i don't think i have that washer the goes on the sprocket do i need that to make my bottom bracket sealed? or does the washer that is on my set up now work?

    • @skrtskrt3429
      @skrtskrt3429 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Nolan that was just a spacer you don't really need it

    • @broughttoideas
      @broughttoideas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Nolan it goes in the sprocket making the inner diameter smaller if not there the sprocket would flop up down as you pedal

    I have an old diamondback bmx bike from like 10 years ago , it has lots of upgrades such as tires , hubs ,bearings , chain , pedals and stem , it also has a 1 piece crank with unsealed bearings. Would it be a good idea to do this or just keep running the stock crank

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure. It may be worth more money as a collector's item with the stock crankset. If it works fine, I'd leave it alone.
