"Why not just build an all-electric Prius for the win?" Pure electric vehicles come with an extra feature: complete dependency on charging - and all that entails, including adding charging time into agendas, detours to find suitable chargers, etc. With the Prime, I could do 90% of my daily errands & appointments on overnight AC charges at home; and get 50+ mpg for the out-of-town 10%, with zero worries about charging.
@@adrianotero7963 As it happens, a plugin hybrid _is_ still the best fit for my driving needs (mostly short in-town errands). But in the 3 years since I wrote that original comment, I certainly see that pure electric (EVs) is the future; and that charging issues will probably soon become _less_ troublesome than filling a gas tank is. Charging will become faster and faster. Imho.

The two motor-generators are the CVT, there is no separate transmission. the eCVT is simply describing the dual electric motor and planetary gear setup that Toyota and Ford use for their hybrid/PHEV setup.
The regular Prius already takes it on just fine, so this is only a plus. For those who only travel 50 total miles a day, the Volt is better. But for anyone doing real driving, or anything beyond 50 miles, the even normal Prius beats it easily. Plus already better rated build quality, crash rating, brand loyalty, brand value, 3rd longest lasting car on the planet, low cost of ownership/gas/repair and the list goes on. Hell, you even get 100 more miles range on a Prius versus a Volt on a standard tank of gas.
want one of these used with the black interior and base model, like its smaller screen with physical knobs more, and the shiny white plastic that looks like a toilet bowl means I have to go with the black interior, will wait a year for the kinks to get worked out. Overall seems like a great upgrade to regular prius.
My salesman told me about an experiment the dealership owner did. He tried to use every trick to maximize range and achieved a whopping 750 on one 11 gallon tank of gas. I don't know how much was pure EV but wow!
Does anyone know what the city /highway mpg is after the phev battery is depleted, is it worst or better than the standard since it uses a lithium battery pack compared to the nickel hydry battery in europe
Personal experience, my 1,200 mile drive came in at 55.7 MPG. I drove from Rhode Island to Alabama using dynamic cruise control behind highballing trucks. I filled up on the road, once at 600 miles. Still having gas in the tank and NOT plugging in, the second tank came in at ~62 MPG and lasted 699 miles until I finally drove it dry. Around town in hybrid vehicle mode, this car is unusually efficient in the +60 MPG range. We suspect it is the deeper, regenerative braking and higher EV speed that lets the car achieve much better than regular Prius mileage. Driving it like a plug-in, I'm still on the third tank, ~1,400 miles, down to the last 1/4 tank. This gas dates from January so I'm planning to burn it off and refuel with Summer gas. Our other plug-in is a BMW i3-REx and it is a coin toss on which car I drive. If facing 'rush hour' traffic, I prefer the 168hp, rear wheel drive i3. Otherwise, the Prime is a more comfortable cruiser and cross-country drive.
I had a 2020 that I returned after a year, noisy, screen that bog, winter almost no electric power, lack of power, not worth go to the ordinary prius instead. The only advantage is the fuel economy.
So...I can see YT has kept my subscribers in the dark...again. May have to repost.

I know my vids don't usually rake in huge numbers but I can tell when YT hasn't notified my subs. They're "looking into it."

Indeed Steve, this video showed up only now on my subscriptions list. I guess what you did, it worked.
I drove my sister n law new Prius prime and I loved it! I've never driven a Prius before hand so this was pleasant

Plug in hybrids is the best of both worlds.....

I think this Prius Prime has got it right to take on the Chevy Volt.

volt is cramped inside
Very good review Steve . I own a prius prime base model . The best car i ever own . My other car is Jag xj 2011 V8

What beautiful hybrid car wow very nice design and looks are awesome
3:56 Prius is Toyota's Hybrid line. A pure EV Toyota will have it's own name.
What are they waiting for? My Toyoda better get his newly formed EV team working overtime.
Great Review. I see you went crazy with the letter P at the end
Jejejejejejejeje.... I noticed that too, lol.
Nice car but for me two problems. Only 4 seats and small trunk space. So maybye next time. For now Prius PHP first generation.
So you never have to charge this car? What's that 640 miles range? Is that on 1 tank of gas?
640 miles is the EPA range with a full tank of gasoline and a fully charged battery.

Sounds like you had to p at the end of this review...
Didn't get this in the notification box or the subscription feed. Weird.
Yeah - TH-cam is killing me lately with this problem.
And no fast charging capability for USA. Why?
Is there a Federal Tax credit available on the Prius Prime?
$4,502. Darn...I forgot to mention that!
No worries, Steve.
Don't get white upholstery
It does get dirty!
White upholstery makes it cooler for warmer climates like Florida 👍🏼
Exactly. I'm in Florida and I can't imagine owning a black car or one with black upholstery@@ScottTaylorRealtor
Want this soooo bad

I wish it had better sun visor for the drivers side. It's very short. Bad design, and the sun on one side of your face can do damage.
Did Tron join the Toyota design team?? Is there a sporty looking car with these same features? That's what I want!
No Appleplay, deal breaker
