    Looking to sway buyers who may be in the market for a Tesla or Volt, Toyota is offering its best Prius yet with the introduction of the plug-in Prius Prime model. A unique exterior look, fancy 11.6 LCD display, and the promise of 640 miles of range with 25 of those miles on electricity alone, this pinnacle of the Prius line-up may just be the hybrid vehicle you're looking for.

      Ive got an 06 and 07 prius and at first I was skeptical and my friends clowned me till they got in my package 8 with leather. Roomy, great on gas and has plenty of storage. I didn't by mine for looks especially compared to the 16+ models those are great looking. But considering how much gas my truck drinks I love the prius. I wish the prime was readily available in Georgia. Its the only new car I'm considering.

      I've heard they are here but I've yet to locate a dealership that stocks them. The Toyota dealer by me the sales ppl didn't even know what the prime was they were like yeah we've got plenty of 2017 models I said again I'm looking for the prime and they looked dumbfounded lol. I'm in Kennesaw. I've also heard stories where some dealers are adding a $5k markup on the prime.

      The only thing I hate about the car are the wheels, I'd immediately put aftermarket wheels on it and maybe alittle camber so it looks more aggressive xD

    I will say, I prefer the feeling of exclusivity with the Prime. Hardly anyone else has one in my area, and I absolutely love it. Makes me feel special and unique hehehe

    damn.. 50mpg / 650 mile range. cars are getting very efficient

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yup. Plus for me, since almost all my driving is in town, the 25 mile EV range means little gas used. And at 5.5 hours for a full charge on 110V, no extra expense to have a full charge for both morning and night.

    • @tuanh5319
      @tuanh5319 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The range doesn't matter here. Its the Mpg. 50 mpg isn't really that good considering the new Chevy bolt gets 250 miles on one charge @ 11cents per Kwh and the bolt can hold 60Kwh. That equals to $6.60 x 4per month = $26.40 in electricity vs $80 in gas per month not to mention no maintenance EVER since it has no engine.

    • @crackerlacker3938
      @crackerlacker3938 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Tuan H other things can break in the car besides the engine

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tuan H: First, there is maintenance with an EV for eveything but the drive train, just like any car. Tires, windshield wipers, belts, cabin air filters, etc. Pretending like oil changes is all of a car's maintenance is mighty unrealistic.
      Second, OK, so maybe combustion engines will break more. But in modern cars, how often do they break? In my last two cars it was 9 years before ANYTHING went wrong, and then it was a sensor.
      The electrical system doesn't have moving parts, but there's lots of complex and expensive stuff in there. Long term as things settle and perhaps pinch or bind, who knows what kind of issues there may be?
      With the EV, we still don't know how real world battery life will be, long term, and that item sounds seriously expensive.
      I hope EV's end up seriously reliable compared to ICE's, but we have to wait until we have a lot of old EV's and see how they do before we can draw conclusions.

    • @tuanh5319
      @tuanh5319 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roger Geyer Of course there is maintenance with an EV but I didn't mention the ones you listed because those are a given with any car. So as you can see, maintenance is extremely low with an EV so it is not pretending in any way.
      Modern cars do last a very long time because they are very well engineered. Now if a combustion engine can last 10 years or more, how long do think a car *without* an engine can last? Triple that of a combustion engine. Its going to be more than a sensor for you car as time goes by. Cost to maintain a gas car only goes up. Also, your car lasted that long most likely due to you being very diligent with maintenance.
      The electrical system has non moving parts in there, yes and? If something were to go wrong, its covered under warranty. and if you were to replace the after the warranty is out, you essentially have a new car.
      We already know that the batteries are reliable. I own a 07 Rx400h and the batteries work extremely well still. The manufacturers test these batteries already before selling them so I don't understand what the worrisome is about.
      A lot of the fear is based on lack of knowledge. The batteries will lose charge but it will be a very long time before that happens and even if they lose charge, you can still use them operate like normal with them.
      If I were a girl or a teenager, I would get the Bolt. It would not make sense to me to get a 30k EV just so I can save $3500 in gasoline over a period of five years.

      Idk, I think the hybrid versions of regular cars look cooler because they look just like the regular version of that car, but they're a hybrid. I have an 08 civic hybrid and no one thinks it's a hybrid until the see the small emblem that says hybrid on the back of the car. I hear the 2016 honda civic hybrid has mileage almost as good as the prius in econ mode (which the 08 doesn't have).

    I tried both the Volt and Prime. The Volt would be my first pick based on overall impressions. However, after a few minutes of driving in that manual adjust seat, my back was in excruciating pain. There's no power seat option, and the whole ergo/seating geometry was completely off for me. It's been a week since I drove it and my back is still screwed up. I was heartbroken
    that I had to pass on the Volt. It really checked most of the boxes for me, except there was no sunroof option. So having had to write off the Volt, I tried the Prime.
    I am not a big fan of the goofy center stack dash layout concept of the Prius line in general. Frankly, its a big turn off for me, but I still need to objectively evaluation the overall car. The 11" display was certainly cool. Unfortunately, the sales-droid they assigned to me didn't know enough about it to demonstrate it in any detail or answer some of my technical questions. He had
    to go back into the dealership several times to get the answers I wanted.
    Handling, acceleration, and turning radius were all good. The lane keep assist worked fine. I am not a fan of the JBL system they put in these Prius models. It just doesn't have clarity at the highest volumes, where I like to listen to good headbanging music. To me, the Volt had the better sound system. One of the big pluses, and a key feature I look for in cars I'm evaluating, is the heating steering wheel, which comes standard with the Advanced package.
    When you open the lift gate you are greeted with a higher up than normal storage bed, due to the batteries residing in that area. My initial impression was that you might not even be able to stand a bag of groceries up in there, but on reflection, I think it was a matter of perspective. The Volt seemed to have more vertical space there, if I recall, but it had a much higher lip that you might be struggling with if you are lifting in/out heavier items.
    The Prime supposedly has the highest MPGe rating in it's class, meaning the energy consumption efficiency.
    My overall side by side impressions between the two is really mixed. Since neither has an available sunroof, I'll leave that out of the equation.
    - Forgetting about my personal ergonomic and seating problems for a moment . . . . . For overall tech, performance, and presentation, I would lean toward the Volt. However, I would also shy away from it, given Chevy's overall ongoing quality and reliability issues across the brand. Robotic assembly may build the cars well, but that doesn't necessarily mean the design engineering will result in a car that will have minimal problems outside of the warranty. I have a lot experience in dealing with GM on warranty issues. Few have been pleasant experiences. They tend to pick and choose what warranty issues they want to address, and you need to find the right dealer to go to bat for you. One GM truck I had to get rid of because of an engine problem GM didn't care to address and the vehicle was only one year new. FYI, I currently own another GM truck, which has done pretty well over the years. So again, GM quality and warranty support is hit or miss.
    The Prime certainly had the tech and performance, but I liked the Volt’s road feel and sound system better. The EV range difference between the two is not an issue for me, as I’m not buying a vehicle to primarily use for EV driving and advantages. One of my hot buttons is to find a hybrid that also has a heated steering wheel. The center-centric dash layout leaves
    something to be desired, but I think that 11” screen more than makes up for it. Opinion will certainly vary on this. One thing that is a major plus for the Prime is the Toyota build-quality and reliability.
    So for my needs and criteria, I think the Prime would be the choice. YMMV depending on what your priorities are. In general, I would not rate one better than the other. I would say one may just have a few more pluses than the other, depending on your needs and preferences.

      I traded in my volt because I'm too tall and had back problems driving it. I should've just gotten a lumbar support pillow to fix the issue and it seems that would fix your issue too. Not to mention that they're cheap going for around 16k. That issue could be fixed for around 20 bucks. I regret trading my volt in. I for sure will try to get a 2nd gen volt in the future

    Toyota is launching one of its largest recalls on one of its most popular models-the Prius hybrid.
    Covering all Toyota Prius and Prius Plug-in models built between June 2015 and May 2018, the recall involves a wiring harness for the car's hybrid power control unit, which can chafe and start a fire, the company told Reuters.
    The problem surfaced in Japan, where one Prius began smoking, and led to the recall of more than 1 million cars worldwide, 192,000 of which are in the U.S. Affected models were sold in the U.S. as model years 2016-2018. Owners will begin receiving mailed notices this month.

    I'm glad that I've always been a subscriber! The lower ground clearance in Minnesota, I can't deal with that. I went with the RAV4 Hybrid, I love it! More money, sure move on to Lexus 300h, I think. Same drivetrain! I am a Prius driver since 2006, I couldn't do it anymore! High gloss plastic on the dashboard? What? Softex leather is the simple name for plastic! Up charging for this is Ok. But, for me, I don't need Softex, I would have an after market shop give me full leather! This high gloss finish on the dashboard would be very annoying! The loss of mileage is real, it does hurt. But, when I'm driving with aggressive drivers and more, I do like a larger vehicle.

    For Volt, gas only mileage sucks at 36mpg. Not when you are doing over 3000 highway miles every month like me. I am getting over 70 mpg with mostly highway mileage with daily charging (cruising at 75mph). Getting 630 miles with 8.8 Gallons so far. Coming from 2013 Sienna Toyota, I am saving over a thousand bucks on gas monthly. The ride quality is much better than Sienna. With two kids, two separated seats with cupholders just work for our family. Bought the upgraded 2018 for less than $25k.

    My 2014 Volt goes 42 mikes on a charge. I have a Lifetime mpg of 138 mpg after driving 66,000 trouble free miles. I have had two oil changes and I rotate my own tires every 8,000 (original tires will go 80,000 miles easy)...that's it for maintenance.
    The Gas Hog Prius is so SLOW! I'm not kidding it's painful accelerating. The Volt blows the Old Tech Prius away at any speed, and doesn't use a drop of gas humiliating the Prius driver.
    Do yourself a favor. Test drive a Volt. Don't get stuck with a gay Gas Hog Prius. It's Old Tech and so lame.
    New 2017 Volts are faster and cheaper. Get a Volt for $22,000 after rebates and tax credits.

    At *some* point in this video, I *believe* it was stated that there is NOT front seat/s AND rear seat/s ventilation, but I *believe* an image from the video - at the 20:52 mark - shows that the rear seats DO have their own ventilation vents. Could you confirm this... not only for me, but for any others that might want to know? Thanks....

      agree, though toyota's usually behind the competition on tech. They normally spend their $$ on research to make their rides reliable

    Honest question here: why is driving a prius perceived gay by so many people? I honestly don't understand this. How does fuel economy equate to being gay

    • @mishazhukov4733
      @mishazhukov4733 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because people who drive priuses tend to never shut up about how "green" they are and how they're "saving the planet" and how "you're destroying the earth with your gas car"

    just that change to the front makes it more car like. before it looked half golf carty, this year that front looks more like it has an engine in it. much more car like. good job to toyota. tbh tho in the last 5 years all the car companies have been amping up their body styles so much, almost every car looking pretty good at this point....

    In the review you mention a half screen being used for the navigation and a blank lower screen. I noticed on a chat that there is a usb video option that plays on the lower half. Does the screen offer the option of playing one's own material through the usb port?

    you should break things up into segments; I.e. interior, exterior, driving. I skipped around looking for the section where you talked about steering and handling but couldn't find it.

      You can turn that off. The dealer can turn it off too, if you find a good dealer, but some of them will tell you no they can't or no they won't. In that case, you have to look online for the procedure to do it yourself. I disabled mine after the first 3 days I owned it, along with the seat belt warning for the passenger's seat since I deliver pizza and too many pizzas on the seat makes it yell about them not wearing the seat belt which is obnoxious and unacceptable. Like almost every modern car, these are things that are configurable options if you're willing to look up how to do it or find a dealer or shop with the tool (the Toyota Techstream and the software for it for your model and year vehicle) and willingness to set them for you.

    Interior is pretty nice compared to the last model. But that exterior styling is just a deal-killer. I keep thinking it will grow on me and then I see one on the road and realize it hasn't.

    it's a nice vehicle but the volt seems so much better with a EV range that's double the Toyota. I understand that hybrid mode is better than the Chevy's gas mode but I wouldn't be using the gas mode in the volt but once in a blue moon, yet in the prime i feel I'd be using the gas mode much more than the volt.
