- Founded in 734 or 733 BC by Greek settlers from Corinth and Tenea, the city-state of Syracuse would eventually become a major power in the classical world. Syracusan influence extended over the entirety of Magna Graecia (aka Southern Italy), of which it was the most important city, and even to Greece itself. Described as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all", it equaled Athens in size during the fifth century BC.
Not unaware of this, the other Greek city-states called on Syracuse to help during the Second Persian Invasion of Greece. However, status also garnered attention from others, including the Carthaginian Empire, resulting in a series of conflicts over control of Sicily known as the Greco-Punic Wars. Syracuse as had enemies within the Hellenic world too and in the 5th century BC, during the Peloponnesian War, Athens launched a military invasion of the island, known as the Sicilian Expedition. Syracuse was not alone though, as it was joined by Sparta and Corinth, ultimately dealing a crushing defeat to the Athenians.

Another great video! This is such an interesting time period
Oh, glad you enjoyed it; for part 2, we’ll actually be doing a collab with another channel that focuses primarily on ancient history!
@@GhostCountriesLooking forward to that!
I don’t know that much about Ancient Greek history, so this was really interesting for me.
Imo Syracuse is one of the best and most interesting ancient greek city states, its a shame it (along with Messina & Panticapaeum) dont get as much love from people as Athens or Sparta do.
Me and my friend have set out on a challenge to pray to every god of every religion for your channels success
Amen

You are way to underrated
Slowly, but surely the channel is gaining some traction! That being said, the algorithm has been rough with us at time for sure.
