Venetian Cyprus and the Siege of Famagusta

- Caught between Europe and the Middle East, Cyprus is no stranger to foreign invasion. And, that's exactly what occurred in the late 16th century during the Fourth Ottoman-Venetian War (1570-1573) when some 100,000+ Ottoman soldiers landed near the port city of Limassol. On order of Sultan Selim II, they were to wrest control of the strategic island from the Republic of Venice. Before this, the Kingdom of Cyprus had been one of the last surviving Crusader States. However, under the reign of Catherine Cornaro, a growing Ottoman threat pushed Venice to annexed the island in 1489.
Not unprepared, the Venetian defenders fought bravely in face of overwhelming odds. Nonetheless, the capital of Nicosia would fall in July 1570. Victory seemed almost guaranteed for the Ottomans, who basically controlled all of Cyprus, besides the city of Famagusta. Here, Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha would face off with Marco Antonio Bragadin (also known as Marcantonio Bragadin), who, rather unexpectedly, was able to stall the Ottomans for nearly a full year during the Siege of Famagusta.
This would have a major impact outside Cyorus, as it allowed the nascent Holy Language to gather its forces, which later dealt the Ottomans a defeat at the Battle of Lepanto.

Happy Halloween! 🎃
Oh, and some of you might've noticed things look a bit different in this video when compared to more recent ones and that's because it's part of a collab that was started before we made some stylistic changes here on the channel.
So, anyway, we hope you can still enjoy this blast from Ghost Countries' past!
thanks for joining the collaboration!
Thanks for inviting me to be a part of it man!
wow cyprus' history is so fascinating. Definitely one of the most fought over places in history. Great video!
Really interesting piece of geopolitical history
Nicely done
Your videos are so high quality and so underrated.
Oh, thank you so much; I will say, the algorithm has been treating us more nicely as of late, but still plenty of room for the channel to grow + improve!
Thanks!
Oh, thank you so much for the Super Thanks!
That last part . . . my goodness. Poor Bragadin.
Lesson of the day : dont be a crusader
Before the video came out, I thought it was an odd choice to specifically release on Halloween. Not that everything coming out today needs to be Spooky, but I figure if you're going to set the "we're releasing a video" timer for today, it's surprising when it isn't horror themed.
Then we got to the end bit, and now I get it.
Great vid, such an understudied topic!
Thanks man; I definitely think we’ll be revisiting Cyprus. I mean, if nothing else, we have to do a video about Northern Cyprus sometime!
Nice topic!
Informative and great graphics. I love this channel
Much appreciated; we've got plenty more content planned!
Looks like a good one!😮
Great video! It seems the algorithm is getting better as of late, recommending me some actually good channels
Hey, glad you came across the channel! I personally do think the algorithm has been treating us a little more nicely as of late. 😅
Great vid as always
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating! Another terrific vid
Glad you enjoyed it!
Best treat of the day!!!
Bragadin is a EU hero !
What software or program do u use for your maps?
For the most part, we just make our maps in Photoshop. So, we usually trace an actual image, then modify it, add layers, etc. as needed there.
I feel terrible for poor Bragadin. Absolutely Evil what happened to him.
Not only were Roman Catholics on the Cyprus but their Eastern Catholic brothers were also on the island, the Maronites since the sixth century.
Venetian scarecrows didn’t catch on huh..
Can you make a video about Appalachia?
Yeah, I think that would fit pretty nicely with our ghost geography miniseries. There also were some proposed states that might make an interesting stand-alone episode, maybe like diving more deeply into State of Franklin (Free Republic of Franklin)?
@@GhostCountries Vandalia was proposed as a colony. Maybe make a video about why it was proposed and failed?
We actually do mention Vandalia in our forgotten states of the US, but we can always revisit it for a new, more detailed episode!
The acts carried out by the Ottoman upon Bragadin is some of the most barbaric and horrific I can think of in all of history, what a shameful & dreadful end for simply carrying out a courageous act of defiance...
A shame they weren't relieved in time.
i can't even imagine the pain bragadin went through, what a horrific way to die
I can't believe anyone believed that actually happened to him
where's the proof that it didn't@@anarchopupgirl

Some people never learn, it’s seems they have rather taken a chance and surrender, but they payed with there life.
Islamists are terrifying
True but so are like all religious fundamentalists.
@@thedestroyerofopinions1321Political ideologues are far more dangerous than religious fundamentalists.
@@bearistotle2820 Since the last 200 years sure. Tho religious fundamentalism is in itself an ideology one could say and it often is political. Tho I get what you mean.
Turkey is secular, this is a turkish nationalist movement built on genocide of Armenians, Greeks, Kurds, etc.
@bearistotle2820 not in Europe though. Communists and Facists are laughable weird in Western-Europe. But we have had a couple of religious terrorist attacks, which were quite suboptimal
I'm gonna be real, it sounds like someone got conned by a merchant claiming his sewn up pigskin was Bragadin, and everyone just went along with it
Why the world don’t condemn the Turks invading Cyprus in 1974 like they do with Israel? 🤔 interesting…
Because it happened ages ago and they invaded when the greek military junta overthrew the biethnic government seeking to unite with Greece(1974), before this a treaty was signed where Cyprus couldn’t unite with Greece or Türkiye(Zurich-London Agreements in 1960) for fear of ethnic genocide.
Because the West has been the biggest supporter of the Turks for centuries. The Franco-Ottoman alliance, the numerous capitulations accorded to foreign european powers by the Caliph and the countless times the Westerners intervened to stop Russia from destroying them once and for all attests this. The concept of Christendom is just a myth in the West. What matters to them is interest.
@@cov.teo.8131 talking about Türkiye invasion not otttoman
@@HelloimthisguyYT OP asked why did the world not condemn the Turks for their annexation of east Cyprus. The answer that I gave, which is based upon historical relations between the turks and europeans, is that the West acted more friendly towards the Ottoman Empire than the other way around through out the state's existence. This amical Western-Turkish relations continue on to this day because Turkey is seen as the only secular state in the middle east, for, since it's foundation last century by the europhile Ataturk, it upholds liberal/humanistic/materialistc values that are the core Western European identity.
@@cov.teo.8131 The relationship between Türkiye and france is awful and questionable between most of the western world. The french and brits propped up the ottomans to prevent Russian expansion. The Turkish invasion, not annexation, of northern Cyprus has little to do with the ottomans and the modern Turkish state has little correlation with the ottomans in terms of its relationships
Ngl the last part sounds like an absolute CLASSIC Venitian fake story😂 always somehow bringing special items to Venice with thesw grandious stories lol
