Why China Abandoned Taiwan in 1895?

- The Republic of Formosa was a short-lived, unrecognized country that existed on the island of Taiwan in 1895. It was established in wake of the First Sino-Japanese War, when Qing dynasty China's formally ceded the territory (and nearby Penghu or Pescadores Islands) to the Empire of Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. However, unenthusiastic about Imperial Japanese occupation, the people of Formosa - a name by which Taiwan was commonly known well into the 20th century - under the leadership of Qiu Fengjia, Tang Jingsong, Liu Yongfu, and others, declared creation of an independent republic on May 23, 1895. This, in turn, resulted in the Japanese Invasion of Taiwan, also known as Yiwei War in China, which eventually saw Tokyo annex the island, following the surrender of Tainan on October 21st, 1895.

I’ve always wondered about this. In school they always just explained it as “Japan took Korea, Manchuria and Taiwan”, never explaining how it came to be
Oh, yeah; there's so much more to those chapters of history and, honestly, we barely scratched the surface about what was going on in Korea then. I definitely think we'll revisit the topic at some point and we've been planning on the State of Manchuria (aka Manchukuo) for a while now!

Mostly because we live in the west. And while we take "universal history" it has always been about Europe and the Americas, but only when it affects Europe. To be fair, it is important but they should change the subject's name.

In Taiwan the story is that Liu disguised himself as an old lady aboard the British merchant ship. His disgraceful escape left the saying A-pô làng-káng in the Taigi language, literally meaning a grandma's harbor dash, to describe someone doing anything to escape. None of the figures mentioned were truly locals though, they were all Qing appointed officials, so they all chose to ran when they find themselves staring down the Japanese barrel. It was the locals who did the real fighting, like Ǹg-tông Hîn, Kiông Shàu-zú, Tân Tshiu-kiok, Kán Tāi-Sai, and Lîm Siáu-niau. Some of them resisted for years after the Japanese takeover of the island.
By the way, Liu was discovered aboard the British merchant vessel Thales. The Japanese warship Yaeyama detained the Thales, boarded the vessel by force, discovered Liu Yongfu in his old lady disguise, and wanted to remove them from the Thales. That's when the captain of the Thales accused such act as against International law, and the two ships were in stalemate for days.
The British diplomat in Tokyo launched a formal complaint along with the French to the Japanese government, eventually forcing the Japanese to admit they were in the wrong and the people in charge of IJN Yaeyama would be punished. Not only did Japan have to pay the owner of Thales for their losses, the Yaeyama must perform gun salutes to the Thales as they leave as an apology.
That's how Liu was able to return to China, despite failing to play a convincing old lady.
@BlackPantherJamal Catholic and Christian missionaries brought similar romanization schemes to most prominent tonal Asian languages. In Taiwan it's often referred to as Church Romanization, which was used to publish the first news paper in Taiwan by Christian missionaries before the Japanese aquired the island.

Well what the video didn’t say is that Shimonoseki Treaty even forced Qing to abandon the Liaodong Peninsula and cede it to Japan. The region was close to Peking, the capital of Qing Dynasty, and was ruled by various dynasties of China since the Warring States Period in 4th century BC, including Han, Tang, and Ming. Also it’s considered part of Manchuria, Qing’s ancestral homeland. It was only because of the joint intervention by Russia, Germany and France that Qing managed to keep Liaodong Peninsula. Comparatively Taiwan is a lot more marginal in every sense, of symbolism, strategic position, economic value and population loss.
The video did mention that, but Germany, France, and Russia intervened, and forced Japan to withdraw from Liaodong. At that point, the Japanese navy was not strong enough to fight the combined navy forces that those countries had in east Asia.

Should ask your dad what year Taiwan was established. If he knows his history, he’ll tell you 1949. And if you’re observant, you’ll wonder to yourself, how was Taiwan abandoned in 1895 when the country didn’t even exist prior to 1949.
It is such an interesting topic, it managed for a moment to divert my attention from the history happening right now, way closer to my country.
BTW, as I understand, the resistance of some Taiwanese people (especially some indigenous groups) against Japanese rule continued, up to the Musha Incident/Wushe Rebellion in 1930.
Thanks Artur and you're correct. Even though Japan did conquer and occupy the island of Taiwan in 1895, there were still a number of battles fought by Formosan militias, including the Battle of Changhsing/Battle of the Burning Village that November. You also had a number of uprisings, like the Tapani incident in 1915, and guerrilla warfare in more remote parts of the island, which Japan never really exercised full control over.
I've actually looked into the Musha Incident/Wushe Rebellion myself and we may do an episode about it - especially if we reboot Ghost Events - because it mostly is forgotten nowadays, despite it being a particularly dark chapter of Japan's occupation of Taiwan.
I would personally be down for a video just about that!
Cool video! A video about the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (1931), the invasion of Rehe Province and the conquest of the Great Wall (1933), and the annexation of East Hebei (as Hopeh-Chahar political council) and the events leading to the Double-Seven Incident (Lugou/Marco Polo Bridge Incident) and the Tongzhou mutiny would be cool, unknown parts of what was the leadup for the Second Sino-Japanese war (and the Shanghai incident of February 1932 would be interesting too).

Conviently forgot the part where the "new republic" was supported by the Qing Dynasty and its founding memebers were Qing Loyalist. Their founding era name was Yong Qing which means forever Qing. The succession of the Republic of Taiwan is literally just a way for Qing forces to continue to resist Japanese forces after the treaty has been signed.

because it was Manchurian Dynasty in China during that time. Manchurian thought that it was fine to give up Taiwan island since the island are chinese island not manchurian island, they dont feel guilty of doing it

@@tsuze8243 Even though it was under the Manchu Dynasty, China was still administered by Han Chinese. There was also no Chinese in Xinjiang and Tibet but the Manchu Dynasty considered them part of China which applies to Taiwan too.

Thanks and you're correct: Japan led a punitive expedition to Taiwan in 1874, in retaliation for the killing of 54 sailors by aboriginal Taiwanese. This also kind of led Qing dynasty China to recognizing Japan's suzerainty over the Ryukyu Islands. And yes, there were a couple of attempts to colonize Taiwan, the most famous of which being that Murayama Tōan from Nagasaki. Honestly, I really want to cover that in a future video; so, I think you'll be hearing more about it at some point down the line!

Hey, thanks for the comment. We didn't cover the history of Taiwan under Japanese rule because this video is limited to just the Republic of Formosa, but we do have a completely separate video planned for the Japanese colony, as well as some other aspects of Taiwanese history!

China didn’t “abandon” Taiwan, it was lost like Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia and part of Siberia due to loss in war. 1945 Potsdam declaration clear stated the return of Taiwan and surrounding islands along with 9 dash line South China Sea territory to China. Potsdam is located in Germany and declaration was signed by US, UK, Russia and China (France was just liberated from WW2, didn’t participate the meeting). The Chinese government was Republic of China who later lost mainland to communist in civil war. There is never any treaty between two Chinese governments and has been in war since 1926, briefly paused during Japanese invasion. I know because I served in Republic of China navy for two years and our annual exercises were always landing in mainland to retake our homeland (both exercises were closely escorted by US seventh fleet, US blocked we launching attack even they were weak in recovering from culture revolution, we had stronger military force and better weapons back then).
Macau was not lost in war. It was rented from the Ming Dynasty onwards

The Chinese on both shores of the strait have this mania of ignoring international law to better shield their preposterous claim from the uncomfortable truth. They both ignore the April 17, 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki that cancels any future Chinese claim to Taiwan. And they ignore the September 8, 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty that did not cede Japanese Taiwan to China.
Contrastingly, Chinese from both shores of the Taiwan Strait, always love to remember the Cairo press release, a mere war time statement of intention. But they never quote that innocuous clause of said unsigned press release: “The Three Great Allies ... covet no gain for themselves and have no thought of territorial expansion."
When the US dropped Chiang “Peanut” Cash-my-check on Japanese Taiwan, “Peanut” had already signed the UN Charter. “Peanut” knew that under UN Charter articles 73 and 76, his mission was to shepherd Taiwan, a colonial possession taken from the enemy, toward independence. “Peanut” knew that China would only be able to control Taiwan as a UN trust territory and for a limited amount of time.
For example, the UN entrusted Italy with supervising the progresses of its former colonial possessions in Africa. Within ten years those territories became independent. The same fate awaited former Japanese Taiwan under the Atlantic Charter and UN Charter-prescribed right of self-determination of colonized peoples.
Unfortunately for Japanese Taiwan, American useful idiots unloaded their chattel of Chinese laborers of THE RAPE OF JAPAN (Chinese: 日本大屠殺) on Japanese Taiwan with mission to occupy it. In our civilized world military occupation does not mean annexation. But try teaching this to uncouth Chinese warlords.
The September 8, 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty (SFPT) ceded Taiwan neither to the Chinese people not to Taiwan inhabitants who deemed themselves Chinese in accordance with “Refuse Of China” (ROC) law unlawfully and hastily applied by fiat on WWII allies-occupied JAPANESE Taiwan.
Owing to SFPT article 2 (b), the allied powers of WWII and Japan, together 49 nations, remember that neither the Chinese people, nor “Refuse of China “ (ROC) people enjoy the sovereignty of Taiwan. Recognizing the importance of SFPT as regards post-WWII Taiwan’s unsolved international status helps understanding why:
- the US never recognized the sovereignty of Taiwan to the Chinese the US had unloaded on Japanese Taiwan on Oct. 25, 1945;
- UN Resolution 2758 does not impinge on the still undecided international status of Taiwan;
- the US and other allied powers only take note (tongue in cheek) of the preposterous claim common to the Chinese on both banks of the Strait of Taiwan, that Taiwan belongs to China;
- the Taiwan Relation Act (TRA) alludes to “the people ON Taiwan” instead of “the people OF Taiwan”.
The January 1, 1979 “Taiwan Relations Act” (TRA) speaks of “the people ON Taiwan“ (在台人民) instead of “the people OF Taiwan” (台灣人民) with well-founded reasons. The TRA is grounded into the SFPT. US Congress took into account the unlawful January 1946 mass naturalization of Taiwanese Japanese Komins and the September 8, 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty territorial disposition article 2 (b) that did not cede Taiwan to China, to any China.
As pointed out in the TRA through its use of the phrase “the people ON Taiwan (在台人民), all “Refuse of China” (ROC) passport-holders, that is the whole population of Taiwan, are deemed Chinese and alien on non-Chinese, formerly Japanese and currently US-protected Taiwan. One can not be Chinese or deem oneself Chinese and enjoy the sovereignty of Taiwan.
As long as “Refuse of China (ROC) retains currency ON Taiwan, the whole population of Taiwan remains “the people ON Taiwan” instead of “the people OF Taiwan”. The international status of such Taiwan will remain indefinitely undetermined. To normalize its currently undetermined international status, Taiwan needs to renounce "Refuse Of China" (ROC) and renegade Chinese Kinmen and Mazu Territory (renegade Chinese KMT).
Chinese KMT stalwarts managed to betray the intent of Congress and the letter of TRA when in their Chinese language translation of the “Taiwan Relations Act”, they intentionally translated the original “people ON Taiwan” (在台人民) into “the people OF Taiwan” (台灣人民). That malign translation error misled true natives of Taiwan, Lee Deng-hui, Chen Shui-bian and Tsai Ing-wen, into upholding that cringe, that bane of Taiwan, “Refuse Of China” (ROC).
SFPT Signatory powers enjoy equal right to occupy former Japanese Taiwan. SFPT signatory powers should take the lead in laying down the law and drawing their clear collective red line so that China can no longer misconstrue each partner country’s “one China policy” as slavish rehash of its own preposterous ’one China principle”.
Macau is rented by Ming to Portuguese.
Hongkong is rented by Qing to British.
Postdam war actually never mention about giving Taiwan back to ROC but US just let ROC took over because KMT are their allied. PRC, ROC, US, and Japan still not make agreement about status of Taiwan.

Republic of Formosa was extremely controversial. Supporters of Taiwanese independence (pan green) sees this as the start of their republic. However, from the Declaration of Independence it is clear that the republic is anti-Japanese but not anti-Qing. In fact, it wishes to be a tributary state of Qing China. (The Declaration of Independence is literally filled with crazy praises of the “Great Qing” ) This video is slightly biased because it downplays this fact, which really agitates many people. Please take more respect in both sides argument when talking about controversial topics.

The history of Japan at that time is interesting. The story of the Bando POW camp, the rescue of British soldiers by Shunsaku Kudo, the construction of a dam by Yoichi Hatta in Taiwan, involvement in the Battle of Kinmen Island by Lieutenant General Nemoto, etc.
Definitely, there's a lot of stories from that period of Japanese history that aren't very well known outside Japan. I'm sure we'll highlight more than a few of them in some future episodes!

It looks pretty similar, but that's actually the national flag of Great Joseon c. 1893. There's quite a few variants of the Taegeukgi and we might explore the history of Korea's flags more in-depth at some point on the channel!

You are wrong. By the royal abdication decree of the last Manchu emperor Puyi, the whole Qing empire including Manchuria and Outer Mongolia was to be handed over to the Republic of China. It’s the will of the emperor. Puyi also became the citizen of the People’s Republic of China in his later years.
