If you think about it, it makes sense the traders would want to coordinate to keep Team Fortress 2 open, so the game seems more popular than it is. You see articles even now of mainstream news places talking about how impressive it is the numbers it's still pulling. Only for like 85 percent of it to be bots.
Seeing how not a lot of the comments here talk about the bots, I wanna give my 2 cents into the situation Firstly, their motive: There was a post on Reddit made by one of the bot hosters, regarding why they did it. Their "justification" was to stir up trouble to the point Valve *has* to intervene or else the news might give them flak for letting racism and such run rampant (this prompted the F2P mute). Others have more negative motives, baring simply to see people suffer and thrive whenever someone post about their bots; and the last is to sell you bot immunity. Secondly, Shounic, a well-known TF2 player who dig into TF2 coding, stated TF2's codes are like end-game Jenga. That is to say any changes made could very well cause some irrelevant bugs to appear, and can be devastating sometimes. This made many ppl who works at Valve reluctant to touch TF2. Also, hosting bots isn't hard or require good computers. They can open virtual machines and run 50 bots at once, and they can make new bots faster than you can ban them. This is a war Valve do not wanna escalate, because it will require increasing manpower the more it goes on.

The less you update the game, the more bots are compatible to it since it's consistently the same build for a long time. That's what bots and bothosters feed off of: the game being the same build for long periods of times. If Valve just dropped small patches everyday it would be practically impossible to bot. This is why after x64 update you can barely see bots.

It's always been suspected and talked about in approximate terms but this is pretty much the first and only time that hard data (as accurate as possible) has been compiled and presented cohesively with thorough analysis. At least, from a TH-camr with enough reach for it to get noticed.
Worth mentioning, I assume the guy that collects 2 mil cases per year doesn't make more than 1 cent per case. The cases usually cost 3 cents and, with Valve's fee, you get only one cent, per case. I mean, yeah, it's still a lot, seeing how there's 2 mil of them. There's no way that the guy can receive the invasion case (the one worth 10$) because the case only dropped for a specific amount of time during the Invasion update, that's why it's so expensive. Just like in CS, how the sticker capsules that drop the Titan Holo or the IBUYPOWER Holo are worth 10s of thousands, because they don't drop anymore. I wonder how the guy manages to sell the cases without making them cost.. nothing.
Steam Community Market isn't the only way to sell cases. There are third-party sites that do basically the same service but charge lower or no fees, and there's trading where even though there is no official currency, players use common craft items as improvised money which can eventually be traded up to much more valuable items including keys.
