This video has actually been finished for well over a month, but back and forth with license holders for the outro delayed it a fair bit and I was too stubborn to drop it. I upload pretty much daily here if you want more content: th-cam.com/channels/dc_JyNaB5VJ0gdWUtWfGDg.html
Something to be said about the “Leda” monster, the graveyard monster, and the status monsters is that when they kill you it says “Player killed themself”
An addition to your theory: I think Tyler propably got the cancer working down in the mines, as dust lung can lead to cancer, and he would be exposed to a lot of dust, repairing electrical fixtures in a coal mine. This explains why there are references to the island being sick/tainted/infested, as the island/mine itself would have caused his illness. In addition it would also explain why the objective is to get to the mine, and destroy the source of the suffering, as his cancer came from down in the mine.
Coal has trace amounts of radioactive material, not something to worry about until your breathing in the dust or burnt fumes fore years on end, that’s why coal power plants give of the more radiation then nuclear reactors, all that exhaust is just let into the air instead of being treated in some way.
Remember the beginning of the game’s message. “I could handle it…I had already gone through so much worse. At the end of the day, i still had me.” So much more heart wrenching when you realize that by the end, he didn’t even have that.
In this case, "Me" (that is, Tyler himself) was his own greatest enemy. Lying to him, leading him astray, cutting him off from every human connection. And, ultimately, convincing him to end it all.
You know what I renember? I finally finished it and ACCIDENTLY was SO conservative, I did a meele only run with barely using my gun and ended the game (before picking up the shelves and finish the final part) with 100 magnum rounds and 100 shotgun rounds And I still had that after truly finishing it. All that while struggling in meele and having to play really smart just cause I wanted to be so-so conservative...
it's heartwrenching only if you count the part with dealing with the fate of his daughter which means he finally decided to accept what happened and move on to the afterlife, however if you skip that part, imo, I kinda feel like that it's all on him and not as heartwrenching because you choose to make him into someone who kinda deserves it and he'll still be trapped in that limbo until he can change, I like how the devs made it so that the player can literally both interpret and tailor Tyler to suit how you view the whole experience, there's also the new game+ to enhance the experience of your previous choice
27:12 my favorite thing about this entire video is that pyrocynical has an actual pickaxe for a bit but he couldn't go outside to grab an actual pebble or rock. absolute god of a gamer
I like how even though Pyro already knows the story, he still makes up theories to lead the viewers astray so that when he actually tells the story it hits so much harder
Even if there were a hidden 'leave immediately' ending, it'd still fit into the story the game tells. Without the closure of finishing the game, you'll eventually be drawn back to it, much like Tyler's struggle.
Would've been a nice touch IF after you first finish the game as it is intended(you hang yourself after you literally not fight to survive but in reality you fight in order to be able to hang yourself) there would be a "good ending" in which you start your next playthrough and you will have the option to just leave using the boat therefore completly avoiding falling in love with the island and its ppl which results in you going back to the mainland and living there the rest of your life or something, idk a tiny little story touch i guess, tho again avaliable only after you fifnish the game as intended so you can make sense as to what is happening and why you know.
To be honest, the "leave immediately" ending would probably just have the game fade to a black screen before just playing the opening cutscene again. Showing that he can always leave that place, but he hasn't addressed what brought him there, so he's doomed to return.
27:11 It is hilarious to me that Pyro acquired a ton of outdoorsman gear to dress up in, and even used a gnarly looking pickaxe for this bit, but couldn't manage to find a decently sized pebble. The man is truly a cave troll that never goes out, love it
@@OrionDawn15 Japan; but it's mainly ores like iron, copper, and aluminum along with coal and crude oil. Remember: there's a reason other than insane levels of nationalism and extreme pride from it's citizens that Imperial Japan was so willing to invade other places and take their resources before and during WWII, along with being willing to work with the Axis.
I can't imagine Pyro trying to explain to someone why he bought a winter jacket, fingerless gloves, a bulletproof vest, a hatchet, and a shovel all probably in the same week
Man, rewatching this video months later knowing the ending makes the whole game hit much harder. I interpret the enemies at the start being cut off by the gate and the radio man as the cathartic idea of suicide, his break from his pain is choosing to take the steps to end his life.
I feel like the rad suit has alot of symbolism. His chemotherapy killing the tumours but also cutting him off physically from the world as he has to leave his paradise and comfort zone
I like the fact that they actually allow you to disobey the voice and give Tyler a good ending, not done enough. Just taking the boat back out would be to run from his issues, but to defy the voice is to face the issues
not only to face the issues but also fight back against the thoughts in your head telling you that nobody loves you or that you are worthless since everyone in Tyler’s life loved and cared for him
And the fact that it's done not in just 1 decision to either "Kill Yourself" or "Dont", but in several smaller steps/discoveries; symbolic of how fighting back suicidal depression in real life isn't instantaneous but thorugh small victories.
It's interesting how this game portrays depression. It presents the path to self harm and suicide as the easiest, most straight forward path, but actually overcoming those demons and pushing onwards requires much more effort and persistence. Also it's weird watching this as someone named Tyler
I think that is a completely true statement (even if selfharm and suicide doesnt apply to everyone, those are understandable references for the misery one's going through) To stay in ones "comfort zone", meaning just living the way it is right now with that pain and misery and cope with it somehow is easier. but to overcome depression (or many other mental health issues) one has to figure out what the problems are to fix them. One after another even if it means stress, struggle, being tiring. Therapy helps in the way that you're told HOW to fight. But still you're the one doing it. To just keep going and keep pressing that "comfort zone" of yours and keep fighting. It will get better if you keep at it. THAT is hard. (Love and respect goes out to everyone here in the comment-section fighting this battle. Just Keep going
This is unironically becoming one of the best pieces of content on the platform, keep up the good work. Its great to see passion on a site slowly becoming more corporate.
I know this will probably fall upon deaf ears but I must say Pyro, the way you formatted this video was at the very least, absolutely beautiful. You practically played a game with the viewer mentioning the crack in the wall as a possibility just to plant the idea that there's another way around the boss. That and the game itself is absolutely beautiful. The story of Tyler with his battle of losing everything, and him genuinely losing it all before you the player can change the ending of how it all unfolds is absolutely gorgeous, I have nothing but respect for Pyro and Wadaholic, the combination of the tragic storyline beautifully crafted by Wadaholic and Pyros editing was so incredible I was almost in tears. Thank you both for this :)
i think something really cool is how when you're getting the radiation suit, the tumor you see is getting smaller and smaller, like chemotherapy at work. the whole island is a sort of happy place for tyler, evidenced by the painted shutters, and the fact that tyler has expressed his love for the inhabitants and the island itself. however, it has been warped in recent memories, being the only happiness tyler can recall, making him bitter of it's existence. it's littered with reminders of his past, and the sadness that comes with it.
This is a small detail but I highly appreciate it. The first 3/4 of the video is fairly lighthearted but as we start nearing the final quarter, everything starts to get more somber, less jokes, more grounded. Until eventually the finale is reached where all bets are off and everything is played out in full with the facts being given straight instead of being clouded by jokes. It’s a fantastic storytelling method and while it is small and seems obvious in hindsight to do, it helps set a certain tone and lets the viewer know to “pay attention, shit is going down”.
@@Flome810 i was able to hold it in at that time, i was mostly shocked but when he said we can reject the radio and that we have a choice, not cutting off connections, the fact that he was making progress, etc that shit warmed my heard to hard
Don't let the thumbnail fool you. If you are in a dark place right now, two hours spent on this video will certainly show you a light at the end of whatever pitch-black hole or tunnel you're in. It sure helped me. Got 'em tears flowing near the end, too. Thank you, Pyrocynical. I hope more people watch this. There is hope. Live on. Don't waste your life.
>”erm… i dont like watching motivational videos or religious stuff or meditative crap” >”OMG PURO MADE ANOTHER SPINE CHILLING, SLOW BURN ALL IN LE HEAD MEANINGFUL GAMING VIDEO YASSS” the twink british guy is not that deep, bro
@@surrk1057 , so, just cuz I found some semblance of a will to live from what you consider a not-that-deep guy, it means I'm not supposed to put out my heartfelt message out there? I should have just ended it all right then and there, huh? Instead of stumbling onto this and getting something hopeful in return? If you think making fun of someone who was able to keep pushing forward in life because of a video essay, then I think you need to get yourself checked. And, yeah, I also do get the meme about Pyro making slop for people who love slop. Heck! I, myself, love to have fun with that notion. However, I did seriously find value and meaning in this particular work of his.
@@Dragonamy5 , never said this was the perfect video about this game. There's always a better version of anything out there. That's pretty normal. I have no idea what you're trying to get at with this.
Tbh I listen to this video and the Cry of Fear video too, almost daily because it actually helped me see light at the end of the tunnel and also makes long shifts feel less of a burn
I absolutely love the way Tyler says “ Tyler, I was wrong “ it sounds like he struggles to admit that he can get better, but in the end pushes through it to improve himself
Yeah, given that the voice actor was probably an ameateur (i haven't researched anything). Their delivery and production of his voice lines are amazing and executed incredibly well.
This entire video was edited so incredibly well, no part of it felt like you should've taken it out. The flow and story telling of it all was incredible, easily watched all 2 hours
As someone who's in a pretty dark place myself, I can relate with what happens throughout the game. The reluctance to admit that improvements have been made. The perspective twisting to suit my depression telling me that everyone hates me. And the heavy desire for suicide. It's horrible, to the point of it being suffocating. I try to see the good in life, but it's really tough when the negativity tends to weigh more. I have tried to get into therapy. I've called the suicide hotlines many times over. Nothing really seems to work. But knowing I'm not alone, that's all I need to know. I am not alone throughout this. Neither are you. Getting help can be tough, especially if you are as closed of a book as I am. But if I can hold off for two years of this non-stop, then you can too. Stay strong
"Tyler There was no other way. Even when we beat the disease, it was still a death sentence. She left us, everyone left us. The isolation, the loneliness. Tyler : We don't. I don't have to take it anymore." I cry tears as i write this, because i can really relate to this.
I find myself wondering if, with the twist in mind, the reason the island that Tyler so dearly loved and thought of as his dream come true and "home" ending up as such a hostile place to you and with the ultimate goal being the irradiated mine, is because deep down Tyler understood that all of his problems truly did start with the island and his adoration of it, from deciding to permanently stay there, trying to force a loved one to follow his lifestyle, and him ultimately getting cancer from presumably inhaling toxic substances inside there. It was never a paradise. He threw his life away in a spur of the moment decision to live there and couldn't cope with going back to the mainland or other people not loving it as much as he did. Now it's a decayed ruin that wants to take his life all over again. His darkness blames it on an infestation, the illness, but the island was always just a flight of whimsy and fantasy that was never going to last. Hiding danger, and for all Tyler talks about feeling isolated and lonely, the island already WAS that, he was just too caught up in his happy little fantasy of being in a small tight knit sea community to care. And here in the present, the island is once again the center of a fantasy, but now it's a dark, horrid one. In the bad ending you could say it's a symbol of how betrayed and isolated Tyler felt by everyone around him as everything began to go wrong. But in the good ending (and the Hunter Ending) I think you transform the fantasy into Tyler accepting that neither fantasy was ever good for him, that the place he called Home was never somewhere he should have stayed. That Fort Oasis was not his Happy Place. Hell, even the name could be symbolic. An Oasis in the desert, a perfect island in the sea, but ultimately just a mirage. The island took his life. And the island was going to do it again. Both times, by his own choice. Coming to terms with that and truly leaving the place behind is one of the main keys to getting the good endings, where you end up in a beautiful field away from the sea.
That was an amazing and very well articulated comment. Never thought about it in that way but that is definitely what Wadaholic was going for. One of the best parts of Pyro making this mod finally get the love it deserves is that it opens up a lot of discussion with people who may not have known about it otherwise.
And the letter about using a happy place to cope only supports this, especially when you see "happy place" written in blood at the end of the game. Everything he's gone through caused him to develop an unhealthy obsession with this island, turning it into the only place he could be happy. When everyone left he lost the one thing he built his entire mental stability on.
I just love it when games make the route to the good ending a little harder. It fits perfectly into the themes of the story. The bad ending is easy, it’s straight forward. Where as the good ending takes some work and a willingness to ignore the literal voice in your head until you. There’s something beautiful about the mere presence of the good ending and the ending or new game plus.
I really like that it didn't just settle for the spec ops thing, as that would have given me a similar reaction. It didn't just say "You could have quit at any time but you didn't. All the progress you made was negative hur dur." It actually allowed you to go out of your way to help tyler. This is something that IMO would've worked really well if someone wanted to make a game genuinely about facing consequences for killing monsters in an rpg, as opposed to undertale which gives you, better lore, more characterization, easier difficulty, and a good ending for following the massive [HINT: The monsters are people too, and it bad to hurt them].
I love a well done good ending. I think the worst implementation ive seen of a good ending is subway midnight, where a few of the puzzles have little extra bits to them and if you dont do all of them then you just die at the end and get a bit splash screen saying bad end.
I'm sure someone else has probably already said this but I think the New Game+ actually represents Tyler's cancer treatment. The bloody walls, the growths, etc. were representative of that in the original game and the Hunter itself even looks like a man made of tumors - it being unkillable would be Tyler's feelings of hopelessness over the years of treatment. And every chapter is like the treatments pushing it back, giving Tyler a bit more time to live but still feeling hunted by it as it hacks away at his body. Okay, now that I've actually watched the rest of that section, I feel even more sure: "The torment has ended" being Tyler's remission. The fact that you do kill the Hunter after so much pain and effort just keeping it at bay, really solidifies the idea that this is him beating his cancer.
It's a good theory but one hole is that Tyler didn't feel "free" when the cancer was cured so the ending wouldn't be as bright if it was just about the cancer.
@@alfalldoot6715 As someone who hasn't played the game, allow me to ask: How is his situation "bright" after he defeats his cancer? While the game says "the torment is over", it is entirely possible that isn't actually brightening his life - he doesn't feel all the way "better" or "cured" since everything negatively psychological still exists. The whole point of the story - at least, to me - is that overcoming his cancer didn't actually make his life any better. Once he "survived", he still had to live with everyone being done with his "shit". The love of his life was gone, the home he felt so close to became empty and dead, etc.
Most people imagine depression as just being sad if theyve never been. But it’s also really fucken scary. At one point I was contemplating suicide almost a decade ago when I was a freshman in high school. I was going to try and OD on my meds at the time but i stopped last second. That night I went to the hospital and was admitted into the psychiatric ward. It really helped me. I was in therapy before and after this. Now im a senior in college, working on finishing my bachelors in general psychology and ive been off meds (with doctors permission!! Dont go cold turkey, contact your doc first) for a few months now. I still sometimes get sad or have my moments of anxiety but Ive seen the depths and ive been working a lot. Im far happier now with a better vision on life.
My memories of depression are less scary and more strange, as in to say that I cant imagine myself in the same way. I remember the precise actions I took and my thoughts but the emotions I felt are now completely alien. I remember trying to come out to my friends and family that I needed help but everything ended up being misunderstood. Right before I planned my suicide I remember telling my mother I felt lonely and her response was to tell me to date someone. What I meant was that I felt that no one could sympathize with what I was going through. When I felt guilt my heart would sink so far that I needed to clutch my chest to make sure it was still beating. Even after I planned my suicide I spent months contemplating existence and the possibility of an afterlife and that hesitation ultimately failed my suicide attempt. But as of now its so alien to me that I still idiotically call it cowardice even though that cowardice is what kept me alive; I have had fond moments where I willingly risked my life to do things I enjoy. While I am at a point where I am glad that I completely overcame my illness, a part of me tries to cling on to that time because I felt like I lost something important with the cure. As of writing this I felt like I lost my sense of fear, now whenever fear would have been its almost always adrenaline and excitement. I still wonder about if my depression was because of the circumstances or If it was because of my mental weakness. As for the game, the severing of connections and isolation is far too realistic to be written by someone who did not experience this before. Telling yourself that the world will be better without you is a natural stage of suicide but its incorrect and only a coping mechanism to help make the easy way out not seem so horrific.
So, funfact about the "Happy Place" meditation the therapist suggests: The description given would be a recipe for disassociation. While that technique can be useful in helping people with all sorts of things, it is also the basis of a memory palace for instance, and it can be used to help control mood, if a person using it has the wrong experiences with it and the space becomes associated with fear or anxiety or loss of control, or if they don't develop some method of controlling the happy place such as conditions they need to be in in order to enter it, the person can end up overusing it, which can lead to a disassociation problem. Basically, your brain starts to have issues thinking of your physical surroundings and the fact you are physical and within your surroundings. While this is perfectly fine for very short periods of time, such as when you look into your memory to remember where something is, extended periods of time in disassociation leads to things like body dysmorphia, impulse control issues, or even delusions and hallucinations. So basically what I'm trying to say is that the Therapist our radio dude had may have actually made his issues worse by barely teaching his patient about the things to avoid with this coping technique. How's that for some Silent Hill shit?
I have been "playing" in a "happy place" since I was young, it just started as a way of making my own stories. But when i saw it in the videogame, I get shivers. I also have some of the "symptom" you describe
@@Dervitox ground yourself. Live in your senses for a long while, taking the time to pay attention to them. See a therapist if you need to and tell them about what you think you are dealing with. And remember, that space in your head doesn't have to be a bad thing, but it does have to be used responsibly. In addition, take time to ask yourself what you are feeling, and think about that, so it becomes more manageable to deal with them.
Fun thing to note is while you don't have something so on the nose about it like the Dead Space 1 titles, I like how the Chapters all reflect Radio Tyler's (at least attempts) to completely devastate his own mind enough to go through with it. From the Arrival to a dark place, the Decay and determination to make loved ones and friends Forgotten, to fall into a mental Storm, take the wrong path down the Crossroads, Regress from any efforts the therapy made to embrace the Madness and Chaos that'd lead to committing either way. The final chapter being Resolve says a lot, since it applies in both cases. A resolve to end it all, or a resolve to keep going despite it all.
It's always the best when you're watching a video like this and you become emotionally attached to the world, story, and gameplay. Props to Pyrocinical for honoring the work of wadaholic with a full two hour long video. I can imagine how rewarding it is to have something like this made on your work.
The fact that this is specifically a doom mod made me imagine a special "back to the roots" game mode where you do in fact play as doom guy and just shred through all the abominations of the island effortlessly and now I can't stop thinking about that
I love how both this game and Cry of Fear have alternate endings that basically make you go out of your way to do things differently to overcome your illness. It's a powerful message and shows how the devs treated the subject with care.
It's fantastic. Shows that the road to recovery isn't easy at all. It won't fix everything either. But at the end of the day, it's a path worth taking.
not to mention how (i forget if its the same for cry of fear but for this one) it makes the game harder when you try to overcome the illness like having to miss out on certain weapons and ammo showing how its easy to let the illness overcome you but if you try hard enough, you can come overcome it
Especially since the true/good ending is so obscure that it's almost impossible to get it without outside help. Not to mention that the game never even hints at the mere existence of a different ending
@@tabnk2 wich is fitting in the context you need help, to get better you don't know there is a different answer until we tell you there is one its bullshit for sure, but quite fitting
the leda enemy behaving like scp-173 makes a lot of sense, because the enemy only moves when you aren't looking, just like how she moved away from the island when the MC (forgot his name, just came back to comment this) wasn't able to see her
I like the touch of, as you’re getting the radiation suit parts, the tumor goes down; the suit is representative of his treatments, and the growth disappears when you assemble it
Pyro’s long form content is truly special. The amount of depth, gameplay, storytelling and humor is perfectly balanced and the music is amazing. Don’t ever stop, Niall.
1:03:40 I know it breaks the immersion of the horror game but I love when game devs do little things like this, just something goofy for the player to have a laugh with
"There was no other way. Even when we beat the dicease, it was still a death sentence." This is probably Tyler telling himself that even if he beat his cancer, he would still feel isolated and abandoned. The writing in this game is splendid and dark in such a fascinating way.
The hunter is legit terrifying. The fact that each chapter gives you a time limit before he arrives and the fact your only shown a prompt like 10 minutes before the hunter arrives means you have to keep track of time yourself while making a mad dash to the end. It’s a terrifying and frantic race against the clock plus the red coloring really adds to the terrifying frantic atmosphere as well.
The smile that grew on my face when you started discussing how to counter the depression Tyler holds within himself, man... There's always another way. No matter how hard it is. Seeing that represented in gameplay just...hits so hard.
It was a lovely hidden ending, leaving the player with the thought that if they ignore the commanding voice that haunts them, they may find what actually needs to be done to escape it and get what they really want. Really awesome vid from Pyro, as always! He’s turned me onto a lot of awesome stuff lately.
I love he technically cosplayed through explaination like literally having a pickaxe while explaining how crafting the heads of hammers and its handles work. Just for the bit, amazing.
I actively avoid anything Horror normally, but i enjoyed this and the Cry of Fear Video from you a lot. The way you summarize the Plot and talk about the Themes and Overall feel of the game makes for such Interesting Videos.
Tbh this humorous interpretation of the game is a bit misleading. Original Cry of Fear atmosphere was depressing and dark. I bet the same is with this game (didn't play this one).
I guess Silent Hill pioneered the concept, but I do love horror games that are allegories for mental illness. The darkest parts of your mind are fucking terrifying, and most of the time you have to confront them alone. The idea that the most obvious path to reach the game's "goal" is to burn your connections and destroy your memories hits incredibly close to home for most people who have dealt with depression. When everything feels so bleak and your mind is made up, it takes real willpower to not push people away from you. You think you're protecting them from your inevitable end, but you're only leading yourself farther into darkness.
Pyro has unironically become the best channel for analysis. He’s really well spoken and knows how to combine that with humor perfectly. Top tier as always.
@Abu Yep, the short answer is that he's not worth watching. The long answer requires a lot more articulation. MauLer is a video essayist and a host of EFAP. His video essays are long winded, repetitive garbage. He should learn a thing or two about editing a script, because he regularly repeats himself without adding or elaborating on anything, just writing the same statement in different ways. "This film has earned the title of being very left leaning." "This film has very much pushed an agenda." "I'm simply pointing out that the film is clearly left leaning, which is frustrating for everybody who enjoys Star Wars and does not lean left." "Those who love the film had to theorize plots and fan theories..." "They have to create fan theories..." "They have to create their own story in their own heads..." "This would be an example of someone writing the script for Ryan." "Stop writing the script for them it's really annoying me." "...but there is something about them you guys may not have noticed, people writing Ryan Johnson's script for him." MauLer is the definitive example of a college student who has nothing interesting to say, who will bloat out their paper with a bunch of filler and regurgitation to meet a word count. MauLer fanboys will uncritically respond to detractors of him by saying "long man bad," because they're very unwilling to accept that so many people versed with superior essayists (many of which make videos that are just as long as MauLer's) find his videos to lack substance. Him and his friends / guests regularly abuse the use of the word "objectively" to the point it looses it's original meaning. Objectively: In a way that is based on facts and not influenced by personal beliefs and feelings. Art: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. "Objectively good" and "objectively bad" are oxymoronic statements, objectively. People using information in a piece of art to inform their conclusions on the art doesn't make their opinion any less of an opinion, or even make their assessment on information in the art factually correct. Mauler made a lot of mistakes in his Dark Souls 2 video on the PvP mechanics, a lot of what he states is just factually wrong. No critic is infallible to being factually wrong on something, and them obsessing with making claim to their critique as "objective" is laughable. The people on the EFAP crew don't even make a good argument for their own position on this matter. Shadiversity in his wealth of infinite genius, made a video that argued for objectivity in art so poorly, it only reinforces the notion of subjectivity. He says there are different standards that different people will judge art by. So in other words... objectivity is: 1. something that is popularly believed (this is somehow not opinion based). 2. a made up, arbitrary standard that validates a position (also not an opinion apparently). EFAP gets worse. Imagine a whole podcast that regularly has guests like Aydin Paladin who cite "sources" like Quillette (eugenicist, pseudoscience quackery) in her videos, or E;R (a cryptofascist who's comment sections are littered with with pro Hitler and other far right talking points. His Steven Universe videos are a very blatant example of making fascist ideology more palpable to those who don't pay attention and assume it's all just jokes. On his alternate channel, one of his Steven Universe videos is basically just a "name the Jew" compilation. He's also admitted to saying that he brings people to come to the "Jewish Question" by joking "until the punchline really lands." In one his Death Note videos, he made fun of Heather Heyer's murder that happened during the Unite the Right rally).
When I saw you talking about the Radiation Suit, It looked similar to the art of the "Radio Man" during the beginning parts of the video. By the end, It makes more sense now. That was pretty clever!
he said he's working on a Fear and Hunger video on one of his recent videos but obviously he's still working on it and I bet we will see it here soon or sometime this year
I' not typically a fan of "it was all a dream" type twists, but it does work in ths game's favour how foreshadowed it is and how the twist's nature ties into what you're supposed to do for the endings.
It was not a "it was all a dream" twist. Cancer, Fort Oasis, Leda, depression - all of it WAS REAL. The monsters and the entire scary setting was an imagination of the protagonist yes, but it is not a "it was a dream" twist. It was a metaphorical and symbolical representation of his thoughts, emotions and expiriences. The real "it was all a dream" twist whould be if Tyler woke up on Oasis and there whould be no cancer, no mental health problems, he whould still be with Leda and still had his friends - THAT is a real "it was all a dream" type of twist.
@Damsen you would also need to really dedicate yourself to find alternate perspectives and integrate them into your self, so it does fit narratively, it's not the straightforward, mindless, "going through the motions" that we are used to. But also from a pure gameplay perspective it is a touch inaccessible for a first time player
Thank you, Pyro. I went into this video thinking it'd be haha funny and keep the big sad away for 2 hours or so, but your narration on this game and it's story has actually changed my perspective on the very dark place I'm currently in myself. Please never stop making content, you never fail to brighten my day. Thank you again.
man, i feel you - maybe, obviously i don't know your story and how you actually feel... i started crying a lot during the video to be honest, even after 3 months of clinical therapy. even if i'm not the most positive or the best place myself, i believe in you and hope you can do it. and... if you feel overwhelmed... don't be scared to seek help. whether it's friends or professional - the latter having helped me a lot even if i wasn't able to fully overcome it - and... even if it was scary, to me at least. i've also lost some "friends" on my path (well, some of them also triggered my downward spiral - which was just a matter of time though, even if it wasn't for what they did), i was very self destructive and... well... i don't even know if i lost some them or just pushed them away, but... i do think it was all for the better. some... some of whom i've never expected expressed true support for me and helped where they could and... whilst i felt guilty about that, it... does... feel nice to be appreciated (sound warning: mercy from overwatch) and still liked, even if you feel totally irredeemable and just like a burden to others.
The fact that there’s two endings about hope has me believe the canon ending is Tyler overcoming his depression, and beginning the path to reconstructing his life. The game is a story of hope disguised as a survival horror nightmare.
the interesting thing is Total Chaos was actually way longer under development, back in 2004 it was just exploring a spooky house or hotel while John Romero was chasing (or floating) after you, the 2008 version was a little more sci-fi and had a multiplayer mode with a Counter Strike style buy menu , 2012 was more found footage (because of the camera), and so in 2014 it would finally shape up into the Total Chaos we know also, i was surprised by the whole hideout thing, where you can store items, remove radiation and such, along with a bed (i suppose there was supposed to be a sleep deprivation mechanic in the mod which explains Tyler yawning), honestly, i'd love to see that hideout mechanic in the remastered version (though it would be rare like the mobile gas stove), also would be interesting to have a survival mode to hold on as much as you can while using your hideout for stuff and buying items and such anyways, it's so great to see WADaholic back on Total Chaos, i will be waiting patiently
If I had a nickel for every time pyro reviewed a horror mod about someone having severe hallucinations representing their internal struggles and mental illness, fighting off mind demons with regular bullets and weapons, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
Tyler killing himself in the mines might be related to his Lung Cancer. Maybe he worked in the mines, or the fumes from all the industrial work gave him lung cancer. So him choosing to make the mines his final place of rest might be a metaphor for how he sees his experience with cancer as what metaphorically killed him, separating him from his "paradise" and ruining his connections with everyone.
It would genuinely make a lot of sense. I was wondering during the video if he had smoked or was around a lot of smoke or dangerous fumes which resulted in his cancer. Having that theory in mind its truly even more devastating that this has all happened to him. I'm glad there's still an ending where he is able to make it out on the other side.
I'd add as well that it could also be irrational resentment to the mines. Since the mines dried up at Fort Oasis, it caused the Fort to shut down. So, he sees all the troubles coming from the mines as they caused his Paradise to be abandoned before he could return
"I'll be honest... I'm a huge coward." Your Cry of Fear video starts off with that line and it excites me. It's one of those videos that's long enough to rewatch from time to time without it getting stale. And now we have this. And now I have another video to watch back to back. No line to start it off but a melancholy game start track. Can't wait to binge watch this into oblivion throughout the year.

@@totororaptors I have! I loved it but I can't rewatch it. The fact that the series never finishes in the UK is upsetting. Which is a shame since its one of Pyro's best work and I would have loved to rewatch that one as well.
I would say that this is the better “free” game, I am EXTREMELY fond of psychological media, there’s something about the human psyche that I really love. And this game in theory is inside a persons mind, a reflection of ones personality and state. Tyler’s world is as ruined, decrepit and hostile just as his mind and yet he does nothing about it.
It's genius. The way it depicts depression is just perfect. When you're depressed, you feel as if shutting everyone off, not caring about yourself at all is "how you're meant to play the game". It's scary, painful, like the basic game. You hate it but you don't really have the resolve to change it and you have this feeling that that's just how things have to be. But do they? Trying to keep hope is even more painful, like the new game+. Odds are stacked against you and you feel like it's not fair. There may not even be a "secret ending" after all, making all the effort just worthless. But, to be honest, just like in the game, the only way to unlock that secret ending is to truly believe the fact that getting through all the toughest enemies with your shitty weapon and zero consumables is gonna be worth it in the end. I absolutely loved the video, keep up the good work Pyro :)
I also love how the "good ending" is not a binary good/bad choices. All the monsters you must leave behind to ensure the good ending look grotesque; not something you might spare in any other game. Its deformity comes from Tyler's shattered mental state aswell, and for how disgusting it looks, keeping them alive is the hard but right thing to do; you're not leaving them to rot, you're giving yourself a chance to salvage them. I'll say it is even better than Cry of Fear in this approach.
I love this comment. And absolutely adore how nuanced the game is in his it incorporates story telling in such subtle ways. In the midst of games being redundant copy paste cheap cash grab. This feels like a beacon of hope for creative and authentic art.
It's a really small detail but I absolutely adore how your ending summary puts "I don't have to take it anymore" and "...I was wrong" right next to each other, you can almost hear the difference in his voice! As silly as it sounds I've personally been going through the same thing (finding better ways to cope w/ depression and reaching out to others) and that sentiment is SO real--the almost begrudging admission to yourself that you were wrong to want to die, the fact that the road to recovery is literally fighting yourself every step of the way, really meaningful stuff; genuinely dude this video fuckin' slaps
- Weapon durability - Light and heavy attacks with stamina management - Dark story told by item descriptions, mute protagonist - Carry capacity limits Has Pyro found the Dark Souls of Doom 2 mods?
I like how Pyro went out of his way to make a collection of items related to the game. *There's just something about having a giant burlap sack labeled FLOUR behind him*
knowing that you're basically playing a game that is a suicide note is so sickeningly amazing. props to the game developer on their spectacular work and pyro and the co for bringing this game to light.
This game is a good depiction of the personal hell one puts themselves as a result of their own self destruction and it looks super unique from the rest as well. Still can’t believe this is on the Doom 2 engine of all games.
i also noticed that when you died to most enemies, the text on the left corner says you killed yourself. dont know if thats an engine thing but seems like foreshadowing to whats actually going on. super interesting video, mad props. one thing that bothers me though, the report note written in 1991 talks about events that happen in 1994 😅😅
Anyone else notice how Fort Oasis seems to share a lot of parallels with the real-life Hashima Island? Both were established for the purpose of housing employees of an undersea coal mine and were subsequently abandoned, leaving behind eerie deteriorating concrete structures that cover most of the landmass. I wouldn't be surprised if Hashima Island was direct inspiration for Fort Oasis.
1:17:17 I think this letter may actually be foreshadowing the ending twist of this all being in TJ’s head, since he would have learned to put himself in a mental sanctuary (for him, Fort Oasis) from his therapist, and now the darker side of his mind has manipulated that strategy by turning his paradise into his torture chamber
Pyrocynical when he sees a horror game made on a retro engine where the supernatural plot and monsters are symbolic of the player character’s mental health:
You know with the ending in mind. I wonder if the invisible enemy In the grave yard is a representation of Tyler's cancer? It's invisible, comes out of no where with no warning, and it's close to a part of Tyler's mind he hid away.
I have been so heartbroken over the fact that I can't seem to get Total Chaos to work correctly on my rig with the textures not loading in right. But thankfully I have been able to enjoy it vicariously through this video.
This video is amazing. The lore in Total Chaos is outstanding and I really love it. Both fighting cancer and a mental illness is extremely difficult which is beautifully portrayed in the game's design. The story of Tyler is thought-provoking to say the least. I really hope this isn't the case, but I feel like the developer may have took inspiration from himself, or from someone he knows, having suffered from cancer or a mental illness. Any how, I believe that Total Chaos is spreading awareness of mental illness. By seeking help, being with the people you love, and never giving up, that's when you prove the dark thoughts in your mind wrong.
That's a nice way of looking at it, as less of a suggestion of nihilistic coldness as it portrays itself but secretly a vain attempt in hoping to not have to completely destroy more things that he Tyler wants to hold close.
I like both these thoughts. If I'm following, that we can identify with/as our destructive tendencies and desire to preserve them because of that identification. I also like the idea that Tyler's 'don't bother' is a still a 'knowing' resignation from trying so long to conflict with his demons, where finding a less tensioned way to approach them might be better. He is the guide in some way. Maybe he now finally knows that the monsters are symptoms rather than the source.
In my opinion it demonstrates the tenacity of Tyler's loved ones, much to the frustration of depressed Tyler. They hold on to him, almost unkillable. It's almost a waste of time to push them away, as they notice his struggle and it only worries them more.
Coming back to this video after while because I’m reading a book in my senior year called “When Breath Becomes Air”. It’s a memoir of a neurosurgeon developing severe cancer and it documents his experiences and life after his diagnosis. He knows he’s going to die and stuff. There’s a part where he discusses the inkling of hope he was given after his tumor shrank, so begins doing more physical therapy associated with building strength and endurance for long and brutal surgery stretching hours on end. He end up not being able to go through the the whole thing because he gets cold feet, so his assistant has to finish the last few steps. He can’t go back to normal because of his cancer diagnosis, he’s lost something that made him whole. It’s a pretty interesting parallel to draw tbh.
Just finished the video, and words can’t describe how great this was. The story was very intriguing and kept me engaged the whole way through. Same for the gameplay. And that outro montage was fucking magical. Keep it up, pyro.
Spoilers: One thing I thought you'd mention is the note where the doctor tells Tyler to try and find a "happy place" in his mind. That's the island you explore. Of course, the happiest place Tyler could think of was Oasis Island, but even that was twisted and corrupted by his dark mindset. Such a simple fix couldn't possibly help him now, he's too far gone.
imma be honest all those notes and tragic backstory leading up to the "Tyler, Welcome Home." and tyler hallucinating "Happy place" on a door to hundreds of monsters which he will fight and kill is just badass as hell
Unironically love the usage of props in the live-action bits. It makes what would normally be a basic "man-look-at-camera-and-talk" segment much more fun to watch, and overall makes things feel more coherent and thought out. Also that coat is pretty rad.
@@loui6244 in this particular case I am using the word "unironically" unironically rather than just as a meme, which of course is an ironic thing to say, but I feel like internet culture has descended to such a point that just saying you like something isn't enough, it's become necessary to use terms that make it clear that you *actually* enjoy it and aren't just doing a Le Epic Irony.
It's Gzdoom, which is actually Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 2's expansions TNT/Plutonia, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Chex Quest and a couple of other games, and then the port's developers added more features and code languages to use. For instance, the ability to make sloping floors comes from Hexen. Back before universal map formats we had to set maps to run 'doom in hexen format' to have access to the line definitions that let us slope a floor.

In addition it would also explain why the objective is to get to the mine, and destroy the source of the suffering, as his cancer came from down in the mine.
good point
Damn the first intelligent person I'm a youtube comments section
Coal has trace amounts of radioactive material, not something to worry about until your breathing in the dust or burnt fumes fore years on end, that’s why coal power plants give of the more radiation then nuclear reactors, all that exhaust is just let into the air instead of being treated in some way.

Remember the beginning of the game’s message.
“I could handle it…I had already gone through so much worse.
At the end of the day, i still had me.”
So much more heart wrenching when you realize that by the end, he didn’t even have that.
In this case, "Me" (that is, Tyler himself) was his own greatest enemy. Lying to him, leading him astray, cutting him off from every human connection. And, ultimately, convincing him to end it all.
I get it.
Because of the voice on the radio.
You know what I renember? I finally finished it and ACCIDENTLY was SO conservative, I did a meele only run with barely using my gun and ended the game (before picking up the shelves and finish the final part) with 100 magnum rounds and 100 shotgun rounds
And I still had that after truly finishing it.

@@user-ARCON_GRID either that or its just killing yourself early, both fit with ending the isolation.

Just taking the boat back out would be to run from his issues, but to defy the voice is to face the issues
th-cam.com/video/hvk2-PtmxAk/w-d-xo.html Its finally here
Just kidding please dont kill me
Really good symbolism from the developer
not only to face the issues but also fight back against the thoughts in your head telling you that nobody loves you or that you are worthless since everyone in Tyler’s life loved and cared for him
And the fact that it's done not in just 1 decision to either "Kill Yourself" or "Dont", but in several smaller steps/discoveries; symbolic of how fighting back suicidal depression in real life isn't instantaneous but thorugh small victories.
Also, it's one guy who made this mod.
It's interesting how this game portrays depression. It presents the path to self harm and suicide as the easiest, most straight forward path, but actually overcoming those demons and pushing onwards requires much more effort and persistence.
Also it's weird watching this as someone named Tyler
Might make it more immersive lol
its even more of a mindfuck when not only are you named Tyler, but also have depression. Honnestly, the good endings message really resonated with me.
I think that is a completely true statement
(even if selfharm and suicide doesnt apply to everyone, those are understandable references for the misery one's going through)
To stay in ones "comfort zone", meaning just living the way it is right now with that pain and misery and cope with it somehow is easier.
but to overcome depression (or many other mental health issues) one has to figure out what the problems are to fix them.
One after another even if it means stress, struggle, being tiring.
Therapy helps in the way that you're told HOW to fight. But still you're the one doing it.
To just keep going and keep pressing that "comfort zone" of yours and keep fighting. It will get better if you keep at it.

Thank you both for this :)
I saw this!
i think something really cool is how when you're getting the radiation suit, the tumor you see is getting smaller and smaller, like chemotherapy at work. the whole island is a sort of happy place for tyler, evidenced by the painted shutters, and the fact that tyler has expressed his love for the inhabitants and the island itself. however, it has been warped in recent memories, being the only happiness tyler can recall, making him bitter of it's existence. it's littered with reminders of his past, and the sadness that comes with it.
Read my name actually
This is a small detail but I highly appreciate it. The first 3/4 of the video is fairly lighthearted but as we start nearing the final quarter, everything starts to get more somber, less jokes, more grounded. Until eventually the finale is reached where all bets are off and everything is played out in full with the facts being given straight instead of being clouded by jokes. It’s a fantastic storytelling method and while it is small and seems obvious in hindsight to do, it helps set a certain tone and lets the viewer know to “pay attention, shit is going down”.

I wonder if Tyler also gained arcanaphobia In fort oasis, maybe with the massive amount of bugs and spiders in the mines.
I agree with your entire comment, and honestly the fact that the name "Fort Oasis" and it's symbolism never struck me is mind-blowing in itself.
I hope even if they're maybe not together again that he gets to be in Leda & Cora's lives & he lets them into his :)
Until you what?
@@derpfluidvariant0916 monsters are people too but they also try to kill you.
Though personally i like how the best ending is the hardest one.
Also, the good ending adding some extra difficulty is a nice way to point you on the right path.
Your ideas are cool stranger! Didn't even read into that before I saw this comment tbh.
i like your theory!
@@gabby3036 Tyler at the end of ng+ exits his home into a bright and colorful field, that sounds pretty bright to me
Most people imagine depression as just being sad if theyve never been.
Glad you’re getting better dude!

Hello Sr Pelo :D

Hola Amigo!
It's the funni man!

I like to think that Tyler probably wrote or put that joke in to make himself laugh alittle before continuing his suicide quest.

Imagine all the construction work Pyro is going to do with the pickaxe he bought for a 5 second gag..

@@mechcannon Mauler? Lmao.
@@mechcannon Long man bad (but unironically)
@Abu Find out for yourself man. He's great at what he does, people are just easily misled
"This film has earned the title of being very left leaning." "This film has very much pushed an agenda." "I'm simply pointing out that the film is clearly left leaning, which is frustrating for everybody who enjoys Star Wars and does not lean left." "Those who love the film had to theorize plots and fan theories..." "They have to create fan theories..." "They have to create their own story in their own heads..." "This would be an example of someone writing the script for Ryan." "Stop writing the script for them it's really annoying me." "...but there is something about them you guys may not have noticed, people writing Ryan Johnson's script for him."
MauLer is the definitive example of a college student who has nothing interesting to say, who will bloat out their paper with a bunch of filler and regurgitation to meet a word count.
My thoughts exactly. I saw the mask and thought "That's the suit the radio man has"

The fact that there’s two endings about hope has me believe the canon ending is Tyler overcoming his depression, and beginning the path to reconstructing his life. The game is a story of hope disguised as a survival horror nightmare.
A survival horror nightmare is a pretty good explanation of trying to get out of the mindset Tyler is in.
the interesting thing is Total Chaos was actually way longer under development, back in 2004 it was just exploring a spooky house or hotel while John Romero was chasing (or floating) after you, the 2008 version was a little more sci-fi and had a multiplayer mode with a Counter Strike style buy menu , 2012 was more found footage (because of the camera), and so in 2014 it would finally shape up into the Total Chaos we know
also, i was surprised by the whole hideout thing, where you can store items, remove radiation and such, along with a bed (i suppose there was supposed to be a sleep deprivation mechanic in the mod which explains Tyler yawning), honestly, i'd love to see that hideout mechanic in the remastered version (though it would be rare like the mobile gas stove), also would be interesting to have a survival mode to hold on as much as you can while using your hideout for stuff and buying items and such

@@totororaptors I have! I loved it but I can't rewatch it. The fact that the series never finishes in the UK is upsetting. Which is a shame since its one of Pyro's best work and I would have loved to rewatch that one as well.
This game looks incredible. It hardly even looks like a doom mod. It’s amazing to see the dedication put into this.
Because it isn't, it's a GZdoom mod. This means things like true 3D are on the table.
While yes, It does feel more like you're in a depressed man's mind formed into Fort Oasis, but I feel like I enjoy Cry of Fear more.
Preforming for you
Whats the name of the game? He didnt even put a link in the discription. Just self promoted shit

- Weapon durability
- Light and heavy attacks with stamina management
- Dark story told by item descriptions, mute protagonist
- Carry capacity limits
Has Pyro found the Dark Souls of Doom 2 mods?
totally
The Dark Souls of "Classic Doom" is Hideous Destructor in my opinion.
He’s not mute tho! He yawns!
- Annoying dog enemies that can corner and kill you rapidly
actually he was talking to himself throughout the whole game
I like how Pyro went out of his way to make a collection of items related to the game.
*There's just something about having a giant burlap sack labeled FLOUR behind him*
i fuckin loved when he held the pickaxe and then had to photoshop a rock in like its the less realistic thing to get
knowing that you're basically playing a game that is a suicide note is so sickeningly amazing. props to the game developer on their spectacular work and pyro and the co for bringing this game to light.

Yeah seems very likely to me

@@plummeted ah okay thanks for the explanation

1:17:17 I think this letter may actually be foreshadowing the ending twist of this all being in TJ’s head, since he would have learned to put himself in a mental sanctuary (for him, Fort Oasis) from his therapist, and now the darker side of his mind has manipulated that strategy by turning his paradise into his torture chamber
Pyrocynical when he sees a horror game made on a retro engine where the supernatural plot and monsters are symbolic of the player character’s mental health:
Mental illness symbolism has been done many times over but when a game does it well, god damn, it does it _really_ well

What?
You know with the ending in mind. I wonder if the invisible enemy In the grave yard is a representation of Tyler's cancer? It's invisible, comes out of no where with no warning, and it's close to a part of Tyler's mind he hid away.
It also blocked his path and led to a harder recovery because the cancer wasn't the only issue.
We're lucky to have you, Pyro. True quality content right here and I am thankful for it everytime I see you upload
You watched the entire two-hour video within 15 minutes?
Facts, I’m in a hard time right now and pyro really helps me out.
Cringe comment 🤓
Pyro the 🐐
Mmmmmm I dunno, message kinda cringe
I love how even Tyler's mind says, "Dont bother killing the enemies" as if he still cares about his connections and inner demons
Pyro just having a real life version of each of the game's items is just pure dedication

Spoilers:
One thing I thought you'd mention is the note where the doctor tells Tyler to try and find a "happy place" in his mind. That's the island you explore. Of course, the happiest place Tyler could think of was Oasis Island, but even that was twisted and corrupted by his dark mindset. Such a simple fix couldn't possibly help him now, he's too far gone.
he did? 1:17:17
"Get rid of that yee-yee ass haircut, Tyler." truly the best voice acting ever
imma be honest all those notes and tragic backstory leading up to the "Tyler, Welcome Home." and tyler hallucinating "Happy place" on a door to hundreds of monsters which he will fight and kill is just badass as hell
Unironically love the usage of props in the live-action bits. It makes what would normally be a basic "man-look-at-camera-and-talk" segment much more fun to watch, and overall makes things feel more coherent and thought out. Also that coat is pretty rad.

fun fact: one of such mods that make a game completely different was the original Team Fortress, which was a Quake mod
Making this game in Doom 2 is like turning a stick into a spider and selectively breeding it into a dolphin that you can teach how to drive a tank.
