    Boston accents are iconic in film and television. It is the local accent of Eastern New England, specifically to the city of Boston and its suburbs. However, Boston slang words and accents are also used throughout all of the states of New England.
    Actors like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg made the accent famous in several of their films. Movies like The Departed, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Good Will Hunting, Mystic River and Spotlight have made Boston a desired city to tell stories in.
    Bostonian's take pride in being from Boston, and we express it through their thick accents and unusual slang words. I hope you enjoy this video and have some fun trying some of our slang words out! :)

    I am a native Bostonian, but my parents moved the family to California when I was six. So, I grew up hearing both of my parents thick Boston accents. Here are a few more Bostonisms that I remember:
    tonic = soda
    frapp = milk shake
    dinner = lunch
    pocketbook = woman's purse
    parlor = living room
    aunt is pronounced "awwnt" in Boston, not "ant"
    and...my parents pronounced California as "Ca-li-FAWN-ya".

      Sarah, I lived in the next city ovahhh from this guy, in North Cambridge (blue collar area), and I can tell you people I grew up with almost always said "packey" instead of liquor store. Thing about Bostonians/Boston accents is most words sound choppy and shortened, which is by design. For example, if you knew a guy with the last name Sullivan, then he became "Sully" or "Sul" or similarly with even a two-accent last name in Kelly, which will become "Kel" within minutes.

    I grew up in Houston Texas, moved to Massachusetts in 1993, stayed until 2011, Came back to Texas and everyone seemed to feel intimidated by the accent I picked up in Mass. lol. I like watching these videos to keep my accent going, been told lately I don't have it anymore :-(
    BTW There are Dunkies in Houston so I'm good for that.

    I was born and lived in Boston til I was 8 and moved to the Midwest. I love hearing Boston accent. My mother was a lifeling Southie til we moved. She still used all those phrases and never lost her accent. People look at her funny when she talks. But I understand every word you said. It brings me right back to Mass.

    This is hilarious! I remember using a lot of these terms when I lived in Hartford, CT as a kid. We used to say "Dis Cat" ["this cat"] when talking about someone doing something dumb. When I moved south to NC, people didn't know what I was referencing when I said "dis cat." They were like, "What cat?" SMH.
