    As a Bostonian I can back him up that people always exaggerate the accent when they try it. It’s actually more subtle than you think. Kinda laid back. Or maybe we just feel that way because we’re from here.

      What amazed me, was how different the Boston accent is from the Worcester accent. I'm not from there, but lived there for about 15 years and you can tell the difference. I think you're right though. It is more subtle than most people do it, but it's not subtle in general, which is why I think people tend to exaggerate it.

    • @fezzik7619
      @fezzik7619 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@somersetcace1 yeah I grew up just south of Worcester and it’s definitely different there. I live in Boston now and still have my central Massachusetts accent, but can slip into Bostonian easily enough. If you’re not from around here though it’s hard to imitate. I probably couldn’t get Kentucky or Texas right though so 🤷‍♂️

    I love when actors try to explain their original accents and then slip into them for the rest of the conversation. Like they don't start off talking with them but once it's acknowledged that they originally spoke like that, or explain where they are from, they get trapped in it.

      Dominik Beitat+ I don't think people in one region of the US have a problem understanding each other. But there are regional accents in the US (and in Canada) that are easy to hear, especially if you are from North America. Some are more pronounced than others, and the Boston accent is one that is very strong. If you've ever listened to President John Kennedy, that's a strong Boston accent. If you've ever listened to Bernie Sanders, that's a strong New York City accent (Brooklyn, actually). If you've ever seen the TV show Columbo in English, Peter Falk has a strong New York City accent. I could go on, but yes, there are regional accents here.

    How many people are going to comment that his voice sounds different? Have you really only ever seen him on The Office? Yes, his "Jim" voice was very low and extremely quiet. He says many things under his breath. That is called playing a character. Also his voice was a bit huskier then. He is louder and projects in front of a live audience. Also he's a voice actor and director so he's often shouting into megaphones on set, and probably overextending it. It's a bit more course and raspy these days. Probably the only real difference.

    I dated a New York actress living in Maine who always delighted in mimicking my accent, I could never tie my dogs out there and tell them to "guard the house" without her gleefully yelling "Garhd the howse! Garhd the howse!"
    John's right, do it easy and smooth. Don't force the whole R>H thing. Also, never say the 'g' in 'ing.' Its goin', not going, for example.
    And if you visit, they're not grinders or hoagies they're subs. Any soft drink is soda(h) and it's THE Sox, not Red Sox, Pats, not Patriots, and the Bru'uns, not Bruins...
    And if you love something here, says its 'wicked.' Wicked good, wicked awesome...
    I've read some books on English dialects and accents and John can tell Emily many experts say New England accents are closer to how Brits use to talk in many parts of England than how they speak there today. So his accent is fine, kids.

    Can anyone explain to me why the Boston accent has such an allure in this country? People love it. And hell, I'm not complaining having been born and raised here. But like, it's legitimately a cheat code for talking to girls out of state or out of country. It must be what English dudes feel like when they come to the US and suddenly they're interesting just because of the way they talk. I have stumbled into some very, very fortunate experiences in my life just for being halfway decent looking and having this accent, and nothing else.

    Yes, finally. Less political satire (getting super burnt out on it) and more of this. Loved this interview. Super funny.

      Tons of people I know say caramel instead of carmel but you're dead right ... it's cahmel.

    People definitely overdo it but it's different all over Mass! I'm live about 45 minutes from Boston in Fall River and we have more of a New York/Boston Mix of an accent. I've met people from all over Mass and it's so different depending on the city

    We all very much love a rich kid from the suburbs of Boston explaining the Boston accent. It's supah accurate, kehd.

      Yeah people with this accent are mostly from the urban areas or older aged. I grew up just one town over from where John Krasinski grew up (though his town is a bit more urbanized and closer to Boston than my suburb) and while you'd get a decent amount of adults with the accent growing up they were mostly in blue-collar spaces looking back. We all grew up accent-less. We'll use it sometimes for fun like it we're talking about the gahden or mahcus smaht kehd
