My RV Atwood Furnace isn't heating!

- Preparing to go on first camping trip of the year, and my Atwood 8500-IV would not heat. The blower was working, I could hear the click click sound and smell the odor of propane, but no heat. I tore it apart and replaced the bad burner and the electrode. Detailed tutorial.
Thanks for taking the time to document your repair. Very detailed and is exactly what I need to replace the gas valve. The furnace won't light until I bang on the gas valve, so its getting replaced.
I appreciate the kind words. Pretty easy repair. Hope the new valve gets it heating again.
I had the same issue with my Atwood furnace. I had a hole in my burner. Replaced both the burner and electrode following your video. Now the heat is on! Thanks for a GREAT video!
Hi Gary. That is great news.
Its really a pretty simple fix. Just helps to have a video.
Thanks for the compliment!
Thanks so much for the very informative video. My gas valve was full of bugs and debris. Muddobbers plugged up the burner and the exhaust after cleaning everything out and putting it back together it worked perfectly. Thanks to your video
Thats great to hear. Sure beats paying an rv tech to do the same thing. Enjoy your rv travels!!
Was it just me or did the whole furnace swap from the beginning of the video to the other side?
Your not the first to notice. I tried flipping the phone backwards during the filming. It was the first and last time I did it😄.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
As an electrician I have got all the electric measurement. Got 12 v between hvite and yellow- (sail switch and limit switch), 12v between blue and yellow -(termostat), and 12v between red and yellow for the 12v output ( electrode and ignite). With the old control board, the burner did turrn on and off with a few second delay. Did replace the old board with a new Atwood. Now the burner is working even. But the temp for the furnance is very low and take a longer time geting the inside temp. So I think I've got the same issue as you have had with the furnance and temp. Will check if there is an error code today. Im from Norway, so the english is not at the top.
Hi there. You english is amazing. Yes, I would pull the burner out and see if the screen has holes in it. And check the port on the gas supply. It could have small bugs or cob webs. Are you still living in Norway? Or living in the state?
Thanks so much for the comment and for watching the video.
Just did this. The burner was so corroded it fell apart when I pulled it out. Threw in a new burner head and ignighter since I was in there and installed a dinosaur board since I was over engineering.
Haha. Im assuming it fired up?
After watching your video I am wondering if this could be the same issue with my furnace, it works but is only blowing warm air instead of hot air. I live in my rv full time and really don't like having to use space heaters, at least our winter has been fairly mild but I still need to get it repaired. I believe you have given me a good direction to go with the repair, I appreciate it.
Hi Jim. Its a pretty simple repair.
If there are any holes in the burner screen, I would replace it.
Good luck. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Tip… when putting your furnace back together try to stay away from electric power tools simply because you’re drilling the screws into sheet metal and it’s very easy to strip the screws out. Also, the plastic shroud that covers the fan is plastic and you’ll want to snug those only with a standard screwdriver otherwise you’ll bust the thing all the hell. (Not to mention that fan shroud is very tough to find as it is obsolete.)
Hi Jeffery, good advise. There is alot of torque in a 20v screwgun. Doesnt take much!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day!
@@retirementwithpete9859 I find that that’s one big problem with hiring a professional to come out and fix stuff is they usually end up with stripped screws everywhere? So I’m learning to do things myself.
40 years of using a screwgun everyday, is a hard habit to break.😉
Thanks for the info in the video, but I saw something in it, you showed two different heaters #1 and 2# is backwards from each other but it doesn't matter, mine was like the second one it lights for about five seconds then out over and over, again Thanks for a great video.
Hey Glen, yes, you and several viewers caught that screwup.
I had filmed the first part of the video on a wrong setting on my camera. Didnt think anyone would notice, but I was very wrong😄.
Other than that, I hope it helps you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video mine went when I arrived 2200 miles from Home! Will follow you guide and report back. THX!
Hi Ed, thats unfortunate that it broke when your away from home.
Good luck on the repair. Its pretty straight forward and Im hoping it works for you!!
good job you got your furnace to go from working to working
Thanks Adam, it was a pretty easy fix, fortunately. I appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
sure thing bud
You had me going there when you had the camera upside down in the beginning. 😅
Haha, lets just say your not the first to notice!!
Very good stuff.
Thanks for sharing this process with us.
I appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
Could you please give me the Part-No. of the Electrode? Thank You 🙏
Hi Einsamer, the part number for the electrode is Atwood 34570.
The burner part number is Atwood 36043. Both are available on amazon. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck with the repair!!👍
Those little "grommets" can be a bear to get back on, I tried the proper tool for them and it turns out an old fashion needle nose pliers works the best. Just force the grommet closed and push it back in. Sometimes the gas flange nut will stay in the way of getting out the burner, you can go inside the RV underneath the cabinets or drawers and pull it back out of the way. Getting the screws back into the burner unit can be a little frustrating the holding screwdriver either won't come back off the screw or can't hold the screw steady enough to start it. A little sticky putty on a socket with a long extension will get the 5/16 inch hex screws started by hand. All in all not a bad job and it's good exercise for your fingers...
Hi Richard, it was a fun little repair. Its very satisfying to fix something, and save a trip to the dealer, or a call to the mobile tech. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
When servicing the furnace on your Tardis be sure to set your dimensional stabilizer to fixed mode otherwise the service panel and components inside it you need to work on may not be positioned where and or how they were before you looked way.
Thanks, i have a different vehicle, but should be very similar. I think i just need a new burner too.
Hey KD, good luck on the repair. Like they say, if its already broke, you cant break it any more. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I am hoping I have a similar problem. My fan is kicking on, my electrode is clicking and I am getting flame. I get flame for a few seconds, then it shuts the gas off. A few seconds later, it fires again, then shuts down. It does this until you shut off the furnace.
Does the electrode act like a thermocouple?
Sounds a little different than mine. I had no flame. The blower fan would come on, and it would try to ignite 3 times, then shut completely off. But its worth looking at the burner. If the screen has any holes in it, its worth replacing. Good luck on the repair, and let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@retirementwithpete9859 , I talked to my local RV repairman. He said that it was a dirty or clogged orifice. Haven’t dug into it yet, but I will let you know how it turns out.
Great!! I show that orifice on the video. Its a very small port. Sewing needle might clean it out. Let me know!
I have the same problem... turns on, but doesn't stay on
Hi Bob, if you feel comfortable doing it, I would pull the burner out. See if the screen has a hole in it. Also check the port for the gas flow. A tiny bug or a cob web could be blocking it. Let me know what you find!
Wish I had that patience
Hi Jennifer, im only patient if I can fix it😄. Luckly, this pne was pretty easy. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Great vid!
Thank you 😮
Hi John. It was a fun project, and its still working. Thanks for watching and commenting
Good job thanks
Thank you! Hope it helps!
What model of wh is this?
Hi Charles, ours was a 2004 Damon Challenger 348. We have since sold it!
Are you having issues with your furnace?
Thank you very much for this very good information and video.
Thanks Bill. I was surprised how easy it was. We have used the motorhome at least 10 times since the repair. And the furnace as worked great. Thanks for commenting and watching. Have a great holiday season!!
Your amazing.
Is it just me or you worked on 2 different furnaces????
Hi Acadian. Your not the first to comment on the reverse image, but it is just one furnace. Im better at working on an rv furnace than videoing with my adroid phone. I tried viewing the video, with the phone backwards. Not a good idea😄. It reverses the image!! The good news is the furnace is still working after 18 months. And im switching to a go pro hero 10. We will see how that goes. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Really good stuff!
Jeeeesh doesn’t anyone use a manual screwdriver anymore?
Haha, I have been spoiled by dewalt. Even my manual screwdrivers are magnetic.
I just love the speed!
Très bon
Merci!!
Great video!!!! Subscribed!!!!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
@@retirementwithpete9859 Thank you for making such high quality and informative videos. Is there any chance you could make a video on how to yield more blueberries from a blueberry bush?
We have been very fortunate with our bushes. They have produced a ton of berries. Literally! Our 200 plants produced 2600 lbs of berries. Thats a great idea for a series of videos on how to get more berries from your plants.
Ive learned alot over the past 10 years. I need to share it on TH-cam!
Is it me or at 1:20 did you move the exhaust port from the right side to the left side
At 3:18 you moved it back to the right side again I have to stop drinking
Your probably also on your way to a failing lp regulator with that much nastiness on the burner.
Its probably the original burner, so it was almost 20 years old. We owned it since 2013. We sold it last year and bought a new Montana 5th wheel.
YOU HAVE GOT ONE OF THE MOST SCREWED UP VIDS ON UTUBE. FIRST THE BURNER IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE THEN IT MOVES OVER TO THE LEFT SIDE THEN BACK OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE. WTH. IFFIN THEY AINT MIXED UP AFORE THEY IS NOW. I WATCHED 3 MINUTES AND GIVE UP ON THIS ONE.
Hi Bob. Yes, I screwed that one up. I do appreciate your comment and thanks for watching. Have a great Christmas Holiday!
Thank you. I will. Monkey see. Monkey. Do. 😂 I feel I got the same issue.🤞 great job. On the video.
Thanks so much. Its a pretty simple fix!!
Thanks for watching.
