So refreshing to read positive comments on the 70's. I am always saying the 70's were the best decade. Life was fun and so much simpler. Nothing works today, then you could ring a company and speak to someone, these days it is usually a robot or you have to wait 45 mins then get cut off, or do these silly caption things before someone will speak to you. As someone else put it the country today is finished shame. Bring back the 70's oh I wish we could. Music was the best, loved the flared jeans not like some today that are like leggings. I could go on.
Despite all the Tory media propaganda regarding the 1970s those that lived it knows what a great time it was for most people..I left school without qualifications and you could walk in to a different job every week. Jobs could be had with the railways, the police, the fire brigade, the Post office, loads of decent unionised public sector jobs. I had my own Victorian conversion council flat in the middle of Islington (for £22 per week) at 19 years of age having just got married. Most of my mates were married by their early 20s and none thought they might not get their own place and afford a family. I had a great car and was in the pub at least 3 nights a week and never worked more than 40 hours.
I remember it well. it did not rain for weeks and there were water shortages when the reservoirs started to dry up. The tarmac was sticky, the grass brown, it was bloody hot!
Went to do a roof job (stone slabs) even with roof ladders couldn't get on that roof . but yes the 70's had a lot of problems but the music was great and life was simpler.
Our local corner shop ran out of Coke , ice lollies and ice creams , it was boiling , local outdoor swimming pools were chock a block , what a fantastic summer .
people actually speaking to each other and not shouting down a phone....problem's...yes, but the way of life was so much peaceful in many ways...probably because we didnt have 24hr news telling us about the world's problems!!
I started work in 1974 and got married in 1979 (aged 21). The majority of people were happy with their lot and whilst there were those that made a lot more money than others, communities still looked after each other. That all changed when Maggie decided to fight the unions in the 80’s and brought down the pits. Life was never the same after that.
Isn’t it strange how we see things differently. Living in Luton, it was sickening seeing regular strikes throughout the country. It was crippling us then, as we can see the result of that now. It took Maggie to break that awful hold, the unions had over our country. The Empire was falling quick enough without that additional restriction on labour doing it’s function. I’ve recently seen the development of the West Midlands into many miles of rolling green countryside, as opposed to soot engrained dour towns. No industry, but see above paragraph for that. I’ve also seen the still very poor valleys of South Wales, but ask, whatever use could that place have been, once the coal was virtually exhausted? That is a great pity, as the hearts of the Welsh people are golden and generous. Do we ever learn?
Women without tattoos, slim, no woke, no pride marches, no free plastacine marches, better music, no social media, no mass immigration, safer, you could afford a house, why do most people wish we could go back to the 70/80's, much better times.
