Santorini also gave us the legend of the lost Atlantis, which was saved as a myth by Plato! Myths in ancient Greece were certainly oral traditions that were passed down from generation to generation until the discovery of writing, when their recording began.

Santorini was named by the Latin Empire in the thirteenth century, and is a reference to Saint Irene, from the name of the old cathedral in the village of Perissa - the name Santorini is a contraction of the name Santa Irini. Most residents are Catholics and descendants of Crusaders who were Hellenized but are aware of their own cultural identity. Before then, it was known as Kallisti ("the most beautiful one"), Strongili ("the circular one"), or Thera. The name Thera was revived in the nineteenth century as the official name of the island and its main city, but the colloquial name Santorini is still in popular use.

I was born in Waddon in 1965. Grew up in Old Coulsdon. So many memories of Croydon high St. Allders at Christmas with the beautiful, classy window displays. Little woods standing opposite. The Whitgift Center was magical at Christmas Catching the green 409 or 411 bus outside Allders for my journey home. Surrey St. Market on a sunny Saturday morning was a delight. I've lived in the US for 30 plus years now. Almost can't bear to look at what Croydon's become......

@@BrianTaylor-b2dYou were actually worse than the Germans because when you saw that you were losing the war you brought in the Turks who proceeded to massacres and ethnic cleansing of 200,000 Greeks from their centuries-old homes. In other words, you did to Cyprus what your masters in Great Britain are doing today, they Islamized the island. Divide and rule! Do you understand now?

I was born in 1956. The 70's were great but also hard ... I had to cope with things I doubt 19 year old today could manage. My first son was born in June 1976, yup that long long hot summer. No such thing as disposable nappies and even a twin tub washing machine was a luxury I didn't have. I had a very old burco boiler and a little, goodness knows how many hands, spinner. Then to top it all, we had a water shortage. At first, the water was on for one hour a day, so I'd fill everything, the bath, burco boiler, buckets, bottles etc. Then that stopped and I had to walk to a water tank some 200 yards away to collect water. Try doing nappies and everything else in that situation ... but guess what, I did along with thousands of others! Having a telephone in the house was still a luxury, so calls had to be made from a phone box 🙂. I'd put my newborn into his big proper pram and walk two miles into town to do my shopping and thought nothing of it. We'd speak to our babies and kids instead of ignoring them. Life was hard at times yes, but it was soooo much more enjoyable than it is in these so called more modern times.
