I started making my own flag tonight. I am on quarantine so I dug through the garage looking for scrap wood. This is really my first real woodworking project in 20 years. I thought I would get cute and use some old 2x6's that I had. I ripped strips off of them an inch wide. Put the strips together and they were all kinds of twisted. Used your jointer method using the level and it worked. Not perfect but good enough. I just enjoy doing this. I want to make stuff in my free time that can be a blessing to others. I can't pay the bills using my hands though lol. God Bless!

I just recently discovered your videos. You have come a long way with your TH-cam skills. Even your earlier videos are excellent compared to most. I also have noticed that you are more comfortable in front of the camera now, and your personality comes through. I've learned much from you about woodworking. And I also am enjoy watching your progress as a woodworker and a TH-camr. There are some talented woodworking folks out there that just don't have what it takes to produce good quality videos. Love the videos and how simple you explain the how to do it. My first attempt at the flag has different thickness and wasn't really happy with it, used 1x 5 1/2 pine boards, any suggestions would be appreciated. You inspired me to get back in the mood to make sawdust, thank you
Those skinny strips you have left over would make some great barbie furniture but I'm not sure there are any little girls that still play with them. I had my own business quite a few years back and those were great sellers around Christmas and for birthdays.

Very cool! I have also heard that used wet coffee grounds can be used to age or weather wood! I have tried it on small projects it seems to work! Apply Polly after that and your golden! Golden brown anyway!! Lol

Today I learned that when I use 1x4's instead of 1x6's, the left over strip on the 2nd cut is exactly the width I need for making runners for sleds on my table saw. It isn't the exact depth to go very deep into the miter slot but the width is perfect. Im going to see if this will work or if I'll need to glue 2 of them together. I thought it was a pretty cool discovery. 🙂

👍🏻🇺🇸 When I was a kid in school it was a normal thing to say The Pledge of Allegiance in California....Not anymore 😞 I believe they would love take the flag 🇺🇸 out of the schools in them liberal states. It would be a great thing to see that flag in the school’s classrooms and teach our children to respect their flag. My daughter is a Vice Principal in a California school and couldn’t take it anymore. So her and husband and kids sold their home and moved to the great state of Texas where teachers teach in a classroom and want to work and care about their students. Love your Flag 🇺🇸

Love the flags. My question, you put a wax and antiquing stain on prior to the finished seal coat, doesn't the wax keep the seal coat from adhering the the project?
I made a flag but I didn’t paint the white strips. I left them natural but hit them with the torch. I thought it looked pretty nice. It really brings out the grain.
I’d love to see how that turned out! I am kind of obsessed with all the variations to that technique and how beautiful it makes the wood grain! I just did a reclaimed wood wall and we did a deep burn and sanded with a brush wheel after on some of the pieces of the wall and all of the trim for the whole room and it was dirty dirty work but man was it worth it! I would be willing to bet it was gorgeous for your flag!
Great video, but just one question. I have made several flags and am having trouble getting the sharp clean stars as you have, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much
Matt great content and great delivery. You make these projects very easy to follow along. Im in the process of building a few of these for gifts. Couple questions. Is there a reason you dont use birch for the stripes as well. Also why use the antiqueing was vs burning the wood for the desired color? I ask these because im using some left over birch for the entire project and intend to burn them for the desired aged look but was hoping to head off any problems pending your response.
@@731Woodworks matt thanks for the reponse. I did some test pieces after sanding and then sanding and burning. Ill stick to just sanded and im seeing what you mean. I was able to round the ply over smooth but the edges are taking the stain darker.

i would like to make one for the 4th July with pallet wood - my question - which brand and make water based wood stain did you use? Can the flag be placed outdoors? is it a stain and sealer which offers all-weather defense in just one coat? is it a Semi-transparent stain that adds more grain-enhancing color and sun protection? Does it Provided mold and mildew resistant finish?
Hey Matt, thanks for all you input in helping us with woodworking. Question for you. Do you know why why when I rip 1x4's I noticed at times small gap between the board and the fence even though I use your technique to joint with a 4' level and make sure I keep the wood up against the fence? This is causing me to clamp down hard to close them up, don't like doing that. Any thoughts? Thanks.
How long of a board are you trying to joint. If they are longer than 4.5 to 5 feet it’s hard to make the table saw jointing method work well. If not, make sure the board against the level is touching on the ends and not in the middle and not on the ends. So if it’s warped, you eant the gap to be in the middle and not on the ends. Make sense?
For the stain, what base did you use? There is a clear, white, and white wash. I assume clear but I just wanted to be sure because I really like that wood grain look!
Great job man. Beginner question. I tried one time before to paint over stain with a cricut stencil. Turned out great until I brushed on the clear coat. The paint smudged some. I had given the paint like 24 hours to dry. Any idea why this would happen? I don’t remember what brands I was using. Maybe cheap paint/clear coat will do that?

At my local lumber store I can get “appearance grade” Spruce. Also called paint grade at some stores. Basically it’s sanded already and requires less sanding. I also like the color of Spruce vs pine. Pine tends to be more yellow where Spruce is a whiter wood. When you stain it, the colors stay more true.
Thanks for the quick response. As I remember from years ago, down south you have yellow pine. Up here, Chicago, we have white pine which I have to assume looks like spruce. Thanks again

I asked the Sherwin Williams employee to make me up some red white and blue stains in American Flag colors. That’s what they gave me. Think it’s navy blue and crimson red

For what it’s worth I used exterior stain and exterior polyurethane on one I did for my daughter one year ago and so far so good. And that’s after a Chicago winter.

Too many people don't adjust for the difference in level. When quietly watching in the middle of the night, they turn on the saw, And suddenly the ROAR comes blasting out! 2. After you assembled the Stripes, you went back and sanded, and sealed the face of the flag, but you didn't touch the ends. Won't the ends stick out, as bright, solid, NON-distressed, NON-waxed Part of an otherwise distressed, waxed board? NOT critical, Just curious! --THANKS!
I would like to make a flag like you have their but continue the round edges all the way thru the stars, I would be using the stripes all the way. Any ideas on how to apply the stencil and paint without too much bleeding? Thanks.

Hello Matt Would your stencils in your amazon work good for hand carving with a Dremel. I would be happy to purchase thru you if so. I used a small stencil on first flag and used it as a guide when carving with my Dremel, which I like once I found the right bits. I plan to do both eventually, but thought I return a little since you got me started....p.s. The stencil i used was made of some type of thicknplastic
If you have a Cricut machine you could make the letters from vinyl if you can't write good lol. I'm always getn the wife to make me stuff out of vinyl lol
How do you ensure you don’t have glue squeeze out into the grooves created by rounding over the edges? Or if you do have squeeze out how do you get rid of it?
Love the project. Could you list the stains you used for the red white and blue? I did a quick search and I found "Crimson" for red, "Pure White", and "Navy Blue" from Minwax.
Not sure if it helps now or not but went to Sherwin Williams and got stain yesterday. Got the same Minwax water based. Here are the colors that seemed to look good. Red - MWB-55 Crimson , White - MWB-57 Pure White, Blue - MWB-51 Navy Blue. Hopefully this helps.
Hey Matt, I went to my Sherwin Williams today and they did not have the ability to make stain in colors like that. They did mix me some paint though. Must be an Indiana thing.
Hey mach51! I had that same issue with sherwin Williams and then went to Lowe’s and they had no issue mixing stains for my flag that were the same or close too what Matt uses in the video.
So do you have any tips/hints on how tight to do the clamps? I'm having a tough time making the pressure consistent across all four clamps. I want it to be tight enough to flip it but not so tight, that it starts to buckle.

She used an oil based pen like these: amzn.to/2PhxoRi They work very well for that type application. They are oil based, so if you use an oil based clear coat on top be sure to allow them to fully dry or they will smear. I waited 24 hours before applying the clear coat, but I used water based clear coat. (affiliate link)
On your measurement why do you add and 1/8 inch for the union (10 5/8) when the stripes are 10 1/2 ? Just curious if you oversize for a reason. Thanks and I love your videos

Cool. I’ve seen some use vinegar and steel wool to do the same aging process.

Awesome video! Could you use pocket holes to attach the panels together instead of the boards on the back? For a more seamless look?
Maybe, the thinner strips may be too thin to get a pocket hole to properly drill

Thanks. It would be hard to roundover the plywood and make it look right. I just liked the look of the wax.

Not sure exactly. I just asked the Sherwin Williams guy to mix up American flag colors in water based stain

Yes, 3/4” sanded birch plywood. Works much better for stenciling stars

Matt I noticed that the grain of the plywood union ran north and south. Might have been better to run it with the orientation of the stripes.

2 quick things-
1. Playing music when using machines- GREAT!
Too many people don't adjust for the difference in
level. When quietly watching in the middle of the night, they turn on the saw, And suddenly the ROAR comes blasting out!
2. After you assembled the
Stripes, you went back and sanded, and sealed the face of the flag, but you didn't touch the ends.
Won't the ends stick out, as
bright, solid, NON-distressed, NON-waxed
Part of an otherwise distressed, waxed board?

I would like to make a flag like you have their but continue the round edges all the way thru the stars, I would be using the stripes all the way. Any ideas on how to apply the stencil and paint without too much bleeding? Thanks.
Stick on stencils work well. Need a cricut or someone with one to make it for you
Quick question can you explain the union cut part trying to build one and I’m not quite sure what that is , sorry not fully familiar to finer woodworking .

Would your stencils in your amazon work good for hand carving with a Dremel. I would be happy to purchase thru you if so. I used a small stencil on first flag and used it as a guide when carving with my Dremel, which I like once I found the right bits. I plan to do both eventually, but thought I return a little since you got me started....p.s. The stencil i used was made of some type of thicknplastic
I used them to trace stars onto the boards, then Dremel them out. Boy is that a lot of work!
I read on the finish that it can yellow white finishes. Is it ok to use on non distressed flags?

If you have a Cricut machine you could make the letters from vinyl if you can't write good lol. I'm always getn the wife to make me stuff out of vinyl lol

How do you ensure you don’t have glue squeeze out into the grooves created by rounding over the edges? Or if you do have squeeze out how do you get rid of it?
I have squeeze out. Use a damp rag to get it up.
Love the project. Could you list the stains you used for the red white and blue? I did a quick search and I found "Crimson" for red, "Pure White", and "Navy Blue" from Minwax.
Sorry, I didn’t get the exact colors. I just went to Sherwin Williams and had them mix red, white and blue stains for me in a water based mixture.
Not sure if it helps now or not but went to Sherwin Williams and got stain yesterday. Got the same Minwax water based. Here are the colors that seemed to look good. Red - MWB-55 Crimson
, White - MWB-57 Pure White, Blue - MWB-51 Navy Blue. Hopefully this helps.

I use Crimson and Navy Blue oil based stain from MinWax. I like the deeper finish. I also torch the wood before staining
I don’t have a Brad nailer, would just a hammer and nails work? Also what size nails should I use?
yes you can, just use some small finish nails about 1" long or so

You put wax down and then the water base clear coat. Doesn’t the wax effect the clear coat finish? Thanks
Typically I do it the other way around
Regarding the back - what about a single cut to flag size piece of plywood, glued and clamped on?

Hey Matt, I went to my Sherwin Williams today and they did not have the ability to make stain in colors like that. They did mix me some paint though. Must be an Indiana thing.

Hey mach51! I had that same issue with sherwin Williams and then went to Lowe’s and they had no issue mixing stains for my flag that were the same or close too what Matt uses in the video.

Hey quick question... how come you put wax on , then cleared over the wax? Wouldn’t you clear it, then wax last ?
I do clear coat first then was last.
So do you have any tips/hints on how tight to do the clamps? I'm having a tough time making the pressure consistent across all four clamps. I want it to be tight enough to flip it but not so tight, that it starts to buckle.
I just snug em up. I don't have an method. Just till they feel snug and all the joints are tight.
Do you also use the 1/4 round over bit on all four edges of the union portion?

What did your wife use to write the Pledge with?
She used an oil based pen like these: amzn.to/2PhxoRi They work very well for that type application. They are oil based, so if you use an oil based clear coat on top be sure to allow them to fully dry or they will smear. I waited 24 hours before applying the clear coat, but I used water based clear coat. (affiliate link)

On your measurement why do you add and 1/8 inch for the union (10 5/8) when the stripes are 10 1/2 ? Just curious if you oversize for a reason. Thanks and I love your videos
I have found that is the right size to work out perfectly for me when everything is squeezed together with the clamps.
Sorry dumb question but what wood are you using for the star part is it cut out of plywood or something else?

Is there a reason why you rip the boards down for the stripes instead of just using 1x2’s to begin with?
