😀 Taro-chane sounds both good, tasty and funny. One, note ... HDR, I am using iMAC 2020 (5K 500nit) and to be honest all of the movie looks overexposed. And this is not just yours video, every other YT with HDR looks bad on iMAC 5K. I can assume that this could look better on OLED or 1000nit screen (XDR display?) - but currently I would say 99% of even decent screen will display picture that is simply overexposed and loose content details with HDR. I am open for discussion with owners of their iMAC's or XDR displays ? Comment regarding your opinion! Is this just mine iMAC?
Nice bike for the price. I very nearly bought one, but ended up buying a 6-speed Brompton instead, despite the much higher price. One reason is that the gear ratios for the Royale 9-speed don't cover as wide a range and aren't as evenly-spaced as on a Brompton 6-speed. For bike nerds, here are some details. The Royale uses a Sturmey-Archer (SRF3) 3-speed hub with 33% steps (ratios of 3/4, 1.0, and 4/3) plus a derailleur with 13, 15, and 17T sprockets. That gives a total range of 232% [ (17/13) x (4/3) x (4/3) = 2.32]. Some of the gears are nearly identical, because 17/13 is ~1.31, which is very close to the 1.33 spacing between the internal hub gear ratios. The Brompton 6-speed also uses a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub, but it's a special Brompton wide-ratio (BWR) version that has 56% steps (~0.64, 1.0, ~1.57). That's combined with a 2-speed derailleur system with 13 and 16T sprockets. That gives a total range of 302% and much more even steps (because 16/13 is very close to the square-root of 1.56, i.e. the 56% internal hub step). The net result is 6 nearly-evenly-spaced gears with a remarkably wide range.
I really appreciate the public service you have provided by reviewing new bikes like the Mobot trifold. I have gone through your findings several times as research into my own purchase of a folding bike. In fact, I just returned from a shopping trip to Singapore during which I spend 3 days test riding a number of Mobot and Brompton folding bikes. Let me offer my opinions: As you have noted, the two bikes are remarkably similar. But I found the Royale 9-speed (GT M9) had a bit of a flimsy feel. The shifters and breaks in particular did not feel like they would survive much wear and tear. The Brompton 6 speed had a much more solid ride and components. The Royale 10-speed (EX M10) felt much sturdier, with Shimano parts. I also preferred the the shifting system (no internal hub) and the broader range of gear ratios. The Royale 10 speed with upgraded components was also forty percent less expensive, which is a huge issue given the cost of the Brompton. As noted by others, the Mobot folding mechanism tends to come undone to the point were I may get a strap to hold it together on buses and trains. Like the Brompton, the seat post is not long enough for my 183 cm, but fortunately the Brompton teloscoping seat post extender will fit the Mobot (but it will set you back another S$150). I would have had to buy that for the Brompton regardless.
Thuong is getting good with her English. I am impressed with this folding bikes, my wife is short and has a tough time finding a bicycle that works for her. And how cool is it these bicycles fit inside a hatchback easily for transport. These bikes will work nicely when your are transiting on your move.

Not that I need another bike but every time I see you review one of these I inch closer to purchasing one, I’d definitely get the 20” wheels and I also prefer the look of the straight bar as opposed to the Vshape, the bag doesn’t even look funky and looks like you can pack it pretty good, not that I would, great review.
Interesting that they chose a different pedal system to the Brompton. It’s nice to be able to have real platform pedals with pins, but I don’t think I would take the right one off since it doesn’t get in the way when it’s folded behind the tyre. Glad you got the right seatpost and handlebar for you Cruise. Now I just hope that Brompton step up the game and give us something new (belt drive and disc brakes for example) to keep up with this competition.
Belt drive on a Brompton would be amazing. I have belt drive on two other bikes, and I love not having to worry about oiling them or getting grease on my hands. Would be perfect for the Brompton. Not sure how well it would work though, as belt drives need to be fairly tight to stop the belts slipping. I think the rear wheel fold would introduce too much flex for a belt drive.

You really got me thinking about geting this bike. How easy is it to find aftermarket parts for the bike? Are they fairly standard (i.e. wheels, tyres, etc). Are the gears upgradeable if you decide to change or are they fixed?
My tip on how to fold the Royale to Thuong. - Instead of kicking the rear wheel to unfold it, simply lift the bike by holding the seatpost! Yes, lift the bike from the seatpost! Once you lift it, the rear wheel automatically goes to the rear! To lift it effectively, try to hold the seatpost at the bottom or near the frame, then lift. You don't have to lift it that high. The rear wheel goes to the back and once it does, just set the seatpost down. Done!
This is the same bike as Pikes under another brand name, right? I notice that the seatpost clamp and front carrier block are identical, and the front wheel can turn even when folded. Being identical to the Pikes is not bad at all though. Great bikes.

Allow me to answer my own question: a Brompton dealer in Singapore was able to sell me one for a little over 100 Singapore dollars. This is because the seat post size for the Brompton and the MOBOT are the same. This modification is absolutely essential for someone who is 183 cm tall - the MOBOT seat post is so short that I don’t think it would work for someone who was even 175 cm.
I have a few friends whom have tried the Mobot Royale here in Singapore & they didn't really like the ride despite the folding mechanism being quite good. They have since gotten Bromptons and 3Sixty. Personally, I can't say anything as I ride a road bike and fully modified mountain bike in Singapore. Though, folding bikes are very popular here.
I would have thought the ride would be very close to a Brompton - those bikes look virtually identical. Did your friends say what the differences with a Brompton were?
I haven't watched the folding bike vids in great detail but from what I've seen, this one seems to have the best design. Weight would be my only issue when needed to carry. A carbon fiber model would be great but expensive. I like how it easily rolls after folded.

Lugging heavy bikes around with hand carried luggage would be a challenge while traveling. No doubt you'll figure it out. Maybe have bikes shipped to destinations in advance of your trips.
Thuong is really tall too, I had no idea you were so tall as you don't overwhelm your bike frames. How do you find getting frames that work well for you in Japan? I'm 188 and it was nearly mission impossible to get a decent mountain bike frame off the shelf in the 1990s even in the USA, much less Asia.

I love my Brompton - it’s an amazingly versatile bike. You’ll be surprised just how much luggage you can carry on those bikes - you can get lots of weight in the front luggage without affecting the handling at all. For taking them on Japanese trains, will you need to bag them up?
A lot of cheaper alternatives using the same folding system are popping up lately since the patents are expired. And yes, you need to put these in a bag to bring them on a train in Japan.

The hardware and the shape of frame, hinge and the curve of handlepost on that black bike is very similar to bike called "element pikes" which is very popular in Indonesia
Nice folders, I have MKS Grip Kings on my folder that go on and off the same way. Kudos to Mobot for designing the storage links for the pedals. I would run a small strap of some sort through the seat rails and the pedals as insurance against a bump that could do it. Btw, not to be contrary, but it looks like Thoung-chan has better leg extension with the purple bike. BTW, you can call your black bike Jr. ;-)
Some questions: with your telescopic seat post are you at full extension and if not how many more cm can you extend? What's the frame material? How many teeth on the cogs? What is the range of gear inches? Have you ever tried riding hands off the handlebars and does it track straight? The only other thing I'd be interested in is a fork with disc brake tabs so I could convert front wheel.
Maybe Thuong can try to try to lift the bike up with her right hand holding the seatpost (instead of the saddle) and swing it backward. That is how I do it on my Brompton.
I came across these when looking into Zizzo (which I will probably end up getting) however they only have 20 inch folding bikes and think these 16 bikes look awesome! I wish that these Brompton alternatives and others like it were available in the US to more easily try out and buy. As someone looking into casual riding a folding bike it is hard to justify Brompton's prices for something that folds compact in a similar way.

That bike on GCN just had SS couplers. Lots of bikes have been made with them for years, especially world touring bikes. As typical, GCN is just oblivious to the existence of anything not racing aero.

Definitely prefer 20" for comfort, but 16" for transportability

Nice review there. TWC I noticed the brake levers are almost completely facing down. Are the angles of the brake levers adjustable?
I think you can, but it messes with the fold if you do it too much possibly.

Brake lever downward. I had hurt my wrist before at this angle for a 2hr leisure ride.

Thx for comparing these against the Dahons'. excited to know about this bike for touring as we hv been avoiding the brompton's for yrs. Good to know there are now options. Unfortunately for us, we r still sticking to our Bike Friday (it just always works out better when something is custom built for u, everything is just at the right reach & the bike rides like no other bike. warning: they are expensive). but, already, I'm liking the mobots u got. question - can these mobots pull any trailers?
I've heard good things about Bike Friday, but never had a chance to try them. I think these should be able to pull a trailer.

The hardware and the shape of frame, hinge and the curve of handlepost on that black bike is very similar to bike called "element pikes" which is very popular in Indonesia

Nice folders, I have MKS Grip Kings on my folder that go on and off the same way. Kudos to Mobot for designing the storage links for the pedals. I would run a small strap of some sort through the seat rails and the pedals as insurance against a bump that could do it. Btw, not to be contrary, but it looks like Thoung-chan has better leg extension with the purple bike. BTW, you can call your black bike Jr. ;-)
Some questions: with your telescopic seat post are you at full extension and if not how many more cm can you extend? What's the frame material? How many teeth on the cogs? What is the range of gear inches? Have you ever tried riding hands off the handlebars and does it track straight? The only other thing I'd be interested in is a fork with disc brake tabs so I could convert front wheel.
There is still quite a bit of range in the telescopic seatpost.

Some folding bikes look cheap and tacky but this company has done a good job of a Brompton look alike time will tell🚲

You might want to upgrade the rear clip to a suspension type clip which can help absorbing the road bumps

Maybe Thuong can try to try to lift the bike up with her right hand holding the seatpost (instead of the saddle) and swing it backward. That is how I do it on my Brompton.

I came across these when looking into Zizzo (which I will probably end up getting) however they only have 20 inch folding bikes and think these 16 bikes look awesome! I wish that these Brompton alternatives and others like it were available in the US to more easily try out and buy. As someone looking into casual riding a folding bike it is hard to justify Brompton's prices for something that folds compact in a similar way.

This is definitely for the Asian market only (5’7”max!!!), unless you want to make modifications like you did.

I tried to locate the web site for this bicycle, only in Singapore I guess, not available in the US, at least I could not find it.
Dealers are only in Singapore, but they sell online and ship internationally I believe.

That bike on GCN just had SS couplers. Lots of bikes have been made with them for years, especially world touring bikes. As typical, GCN is just oblivious to the existence of anything not racing aero.

Thought about it, but decided not to for now.
A couple of months ago I purchased a Smart Motion E bike with a Gates Carbon drive belt , Great change , as in no chain , = ,no mess on the trousers 👖 and no stretched🔗 chain , I am surprised 🤨 that these companies have not built the new bikes with the belt drive : For me I'll never go back to the chain 🔗!

it's a moniker that adds a little warmth to a name, with the intention of giving off a feeling of closeness with the speaker. If you add "chan" you're implying that the object of your affection is cute and is someone/thing worth caring for.
Your seat post looks really tall, so I'd call the bike 'flagpole' or whatever that is in Japanese 😄
