when i heard about the gelheads i looked straight into the comments and found none. pak, if you see this, please pin me so its more likely that one would reply so i can fully uncover this.
Now you see **snorts** the r-reason why Jelly is the greatest monster **fixes glasses** is because he looks like a ghost from Ghost-Busters which is why he is the best specimen🤓 Also, **Snorts** his death text is the best in the game because it has the most meaning in the game **fixes glasses** in which PakPak, who is a MASSIVE fool, doesn’t understand. You see, It actually means that the real specimen, is the friends we made along the way 😃🤓
Gelhead here! ...Gelhead is not the best by any means, but I have affection for him because of the horrible gasping noise and the fact that he was the exact moment I realized the game was actually going to have teeth after all. Also, the introductory note caught me very off guard. Basically, I like him because how incredibly off-guard he caught me xD
About specimen 10, I personally found it terrying but for not the usual reason. I found the cat-dos entry of the worm/eel thing before I found the one about the actual specimen 10, and since it of course said it's a worm like thing and that it is completely harmless. When I eventually did find his lair I was of course very tense, but when the worm came out the vent I felt relief funnily enough. I thought "Oh, I know this thing! It's harmless, the game is trying to scare me." But then it stops and the actual visceral thing comes out, completely destroying the relief I had found a second ago. So while it is not by favorite specimen, It gave me one of the most original scares I've ever had.
Similar to what Rise of the Resistance does with its drop, it shows you the drop a second before, you know it’s coming but it still surprises you. There’s a sense of relief in the escape that is quickly taken by the drop
What I really like about cardboard cutouts is that their scare factor is twofold. First is how you react to them in the early game, when you didn't expect anything, and then get spooked by the first appearance. Then you probably laugh or groan, and soon get used to them. But afterwards, in the later game, when you actually met real monsters, you become so tense, so on edge, that those innocent stumps and jellies start scaring you again. To the point where I saw some streamers yell, then rage at the stupid stump that scared them.
Adding to that, the green slime face changes at a certain room (dunno which one) and gets all bloody and black eyed, and stuff, plus the stress from the other specimens, really can scare the shit out of you
There's also ther fact that they become an obstacle when you try to run away if you're not paying attention, so if you get caught on one during a chase you could easily get screwed over
@@Jesse_69420nah, you become the host if you kill the previous host, if you survived 1000 rooms then you deserve be a specimen more special than only be a minion for a specimen
19:18 This line was originally a reference to Slenderman where he said he wouldn't pick up notes to avoid summoning the 'Tall Man'. Many people misunderstood and thought this was an actual enemy that would spawn if you kept picking up notes, so they stopped reading them and missed the whole story, leading to the line being changed.
Fun fact! Originally the note that has the *inserts obscure horror reference that no one gets and misinterprets as instructions somehow* was actually about avoiding picking up other notes to prevent summoning the "tall man", a reference to the Slenderman game. However, players took this as a hint that a specimen would attack you if you picked up the notes, so they had to change it.
So wait the instructions said “if you pick up notes something will attack you” and the devs *didn’t* expect players to therefore not pick up notes? I mean obviously it’s a slenderman reference (I find it pretty doubtful that slenderman was an “obscure reference no one got”, wasn’t that game hugely popular, like one of the first “viral” horror games of the internet?), but I would just assume that means this game added an enemy inspired by that one, not that the reference meant nothing at all.
@@thevenator3955 Haven't really played the game, but I doubt the note was a straight up "Avoid picking up other notes or the tall man will attack you." Given how the notes work, it would've probably been something more like the note writer going "Maybe if I pick up more of these notes, the tall man will show up."
@@thevenator3955 "Originally" means "when it was first released". It was obviously changed from Slenderman reference to this new version. Reading with understanding's fun.
@@zaiden2becausejustzaidenisusedIf I hadn't read your reply I wouldn't even have noticed That's on me for never reading usernames xD He's right tho, it does feel like a parody game at points but then it slowly goes back to actually scary
Funnily enough the “Beef Demon” before the 3d update chase had a different feel to it. Had severe rubber-band AI and huge bursts of speed, mix in that fact it travels through walls. It was basically a just a exhilarating run through bigger rooms and at moments would overshoot past in front of you. However it’s sorta disappointing that it was tone back a lot in the 3d update. It’s honestly nowhere near as threatening, intense, or interesting as the others nowadays.
When you mention 'The 3D Update', are you referring to the original game compared to the HD Renovation? Or, in the HD Renovation, was the Food Demon not 3D?
i didn't notice that at all in 2D in 2D the only specimens that actually got me was the alien inspired one due to me missing the hint about not running from it, and the puppet because i missed the hint about looking at it every other specimen in the game was just >walk to the exit calmly >sometimes run to the exit calmly so when the specimens did something else it severely hurt the game cause all i expect from it is mindless running
@@fortnitesexman I'd really like some kind of game where it's similar to SJM (Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion) but every entity/specimen has a different mechanic. Basically Doors but with more SJM inspiration rather than Rooms. Considering the only specimens that got close to/actually killed me were the ones which involved looking at it, being Ben (Specimen 6) and that thing from Karamari Hospital (The bandage head). That's only really because of how they shifted so majorly, if they weren't the only specimens with mechanics that were majorly different from each other, it would still be a surprise but not as (and with big quotation marks) 'unfair' of a shift.
19:15 - In Endless mode, you can find notes that are seemingly written by Spooky, and her plans to send messages to "LP people", in hopes of that attracting more LP people, and their "viewers" into her mansion. To Spooky's confusion, her message was stated to be "some sort of canned meat product" (spam). These notes also talk about Spooky discovering "short horror experiences as well as some sort of Italian cooking" (Creepy pastas) So yeah, Clearly developer had let's players in mind. (also the addition to humor element) (Also, these notes reveal a reason behind the name change)
@Spin overly simplified: German game studio, named "Spooky House Studios" threatened with legal actions for name/trademark infringement... Or as the notes put it: _"a worker from GL Labs brought me distressing news about the title of our house. It seems another house far away already has our title somehow and wants us to change ours. They must have a larger ghost army than ours, so further investigation is required."_ _"Today the worker said with enough funds we can dismiss this title metamorphosis, but I've decided to keep all funds toward dried noodle sustenance and scary things. I'm not sure how this other mansion is going to benefit from this."_
Calling creepypastas "Short horror experiences as well as some form of italian cooking" is actually genius and I am going to yoink it if I ever make a horror game.
Also the original note that people misunderstood as instructions was actually saying the person didn’t want to pick up notes to summon the tall man (slender man)
The Ringo music is less of an alarm, and sounds A LOT like the class bell that plays in Japanese schools to signal the start of class, which also makes sense with the naming and theme.
I love how passionate you are about describing this stuff. A lot of TH-camrs either coldly and clinically analyze things like a professor, or go the full AVGN angry critic route. I like when people are just passionately talking about a thing they enjoy.
@@ARStudios2000 It's so much more genuine too. A lot of reviewers and lets-players are very inorganic, like you are always intimately aware they are playing a character and doing a bit. It's why I really got into John Wolfe as a lets player: he doesn't overreact and screech his fool head off like an absolute bellend at every tiny little scare and is actually really sardonic and dry. It's a real breath of fresh air.
fr, it feels way more at home in a sense, like you're just listening to your friend passionately ramble about one of his newest hyperfixations. i like it. :)
Fun fact: prior to the Halloween update that added the dollhouse, some specimens you would consider to be good were actually buffed to make them scarier. The Deer Lord used to be underwhelming and slow until Akira gave it no clip. And I think Strawby was given a slight visual upgrade to make it more phantom like by adding special effects as it moves so you think its moving much faster than you think
Maybe the old you could even copy your behavior, like for instance maybe whenever a cardboard cutout appears on a wall it will stop and attack it, and maybe it could occasionally sprint towards you, and the cutouts could be what stall it
I think the Beef Demon is themed after the stereotypical "they're a cult worshipping a demon" plot that is so common in horror games. It checks most all of the boxes, from what I can tell. Player finds notes describing strange behavior, a violent outburst due to criticism, strange dreams; blood in the bathroom; the death screen text lines up with cultish theming perfectly.
The Taker was definitely a terrifying shift. When I first saw the number "731" on the wall I knew it was going to be exceptionally unpleasant, few organizations throughout history have rivaled Unit 731's ability to revel in the depths of human cruelty. The idea that it could be trying to take you from the very start without you even knowing it's there is brilliant horror.
When you saw 731 you knew it would be exceptionally unpleasant?? Why?! That shit adds up to 11! Do you even KNOW how happy that would make my superstition themed OCD to see?! 🤣😂
@@DivineAdversity777 Guess it depends on what someone already knows and associates with the number. I am a bit of a history nerd so I was already aware of Unit 731, consequently it's the first thing that comes to my mind when I see that number sequence.
12:45 It doesn't sound like an alarm clock. It sounds like a school bell or a little song they play before announcements over the PA system. That would fit more with the school theme and what a student would hear if they were late to class. What could be a cheery little tune would be anxiety-inducing at the thought of being late and getting in trouble. It's saying, "You've run out of time" and In the context of the ringu, its very ominous.
Personally I thought it sounded like some sort of Japanese school video game music, she is introduced in a Japanese school after all (and she also reminds me of the school girl video game in kararami hospital)
@MrSquiggly Karamari Hospital, and the whole Japanese school themed locale fitting with the graphic novel mini game could also link to some entities possibly originating from different locations within the DLCs
42:13 It all makes sense now… Specimen 11 is likely made of beef. Concidering the biblical references and theme of specimen 11. I feel like he is meant to be the physical embodiment of Gluttony, one of the 7 deadly sins!
Heyo other dev here, loved the video so much! Def wanna point out some funny / interesting things. -I've never heard the "Fog Maze" reference to Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time as "Simon Says", interesting. -In studio, we call Spec 3 our "stupid dog" It's based off Resident Evil -Spec 4, I still need to fix the flashlight ;__; She's based off games like Corpse Party and the movie Ju-on. -Spec 5 also has a funny lil Star Wars reference in there. -You talking about people interpreting things incorrect must be infuriating: It can be sometimes where people don't realize the "walking sim" part of it is giving you a false sense of security like you said at the beginning of the game. We purposely leave some things ambiguous though because we believe the human mind on its own can make things a lot more scary than we could. -Spec 6 is the one majority of people die to and consistently. He's had a lot of changes, initially he was like a Weeping Angel and didn't move at all when you looked at him, but then we saw people cheesing that mechanic to heal. So we changed it to it's current iteration which is that when he laughs, that's his indication that he's dropping down, you move slightly forward and turn around when you hear the laugh to avoid getting hit, then you turn around again and keep moving forward until you hear the laugh again. If you stare at him, he'll just get mad and zoop back up and fall back down and hit you again. We've tried balancing him but speeding him up isn't the most wise as we've seen countless players have so many issues since it's the first spec that changes the whole, just run forward gimmick. -Spec 7: We wanna give it a Death Scene but we don't wanna rush it or force an idea. We wanna make something we will think fits the spec the best. It's also based off NES Godzilla / Gygas from Earthbound. We're also trying to figure out recahse ideas for Endless Mode. -Spec 11 is odd because he's from an OG Akuma Kira Little Big Planet map. -Chase themes all have a 50% chance to play so that you never know when and if you're being chased unless you find out the hard way. -Spec 12: Akuma Kira and I were obsessed with Too Many Cooks, an Adult Swim short, so the design of the old man is based on that. -Spec 13 is currently in a revamp state, half of it is currently live, with her chase, her area and slightly her design. All the specs are getting updates to their 3D models to have more detail, better animations, etc -Eagerly waiting for the Dollhouse DLC video and see what you think and how you interpret it! Thanks for making the video, I super enjoyed it and also sorry for the WALL OF TEXT TO TAKE THE DEAD TO TAKE THE DEAD TO TAKE THE DEAD
maybe have the player character be pulled into specimen 7 (wall of flesh specimen if i got the number wrong) and the death scene can be its “skin” and the player’s melting together while the player is struggling to escape, maybe the upper half of the body could be being pulled by hands from the wall? idk just an idea
honestly a terrifying concept for specimen 7 could be quick flashes of the player covered in blood, melting, but just vague enough for you not to see it, along with the vague poetic text
This game is such brilliant concept. It's like if you take the last 30 minutes of "Cabin in the Woods" and turned that into a survival horror game. The multiple references to other horror media really add to that feeling too.
It even has Cabin in the Woods's thing where it has one or two legit crossovers that you only find in small out of the way spots (The Special Infected from Left 4 Dead in Cabin, and White Face from Imscared in Spooky's)
Fun fact me and my sister call the final boss "cheese man" because the first time we encountered him was the room that slowly gets thinner and thinner. We made a joke about how the room was like a wedge of cheese when we were walking down it, cue us getting killed by the "cheese man"
Won’t lie, I love your videos and how you do a Psudeo-Let’s Play and break down the game. Your reviews are detailed, fun, creative, and twice the charm of most content out there. And now you’re reviewing this masterpiece of what one indie developer can do. Thank you! I genuinely get super excited about this game, as it was the game that made me love indie horror. I remember dying to Specimen 6 on my first run, and being both terrified, and wanting to keep going. This game was that opening for me. Maybe one day we can get a look at how Inscryption turned the card like rouge game on its head, or how Evil Within is a great masterpiece as well. I’d love to see you tackle those games.
12:40 I think its reminiscent of the Westminster chimes Japanese schools use for their school bells, hence late to class aspect. It's awesome you were able to pick up on the detail with the melody, it made me realize that a lot of thought was put in theme composition.
The thing with Specimen 7, and this was pointed out to me before, is that it’s so slow, realistically the only way to die to it is to either be stupid or give up entirely. Which is thematically appropriate all things considered. I love it for that reason alone (though nothing can beat my love of the Dear Lord, as I’ve even used it in a D&D campaign)
I personally have seen someone walk into a dead end and then proceed to do a complete 180 into the specimen despite it very clearly being there. They had like 5 seconds to react but just walked into it. I was honestly shocked and flabbergasted, like i have never seen ANYONE die to it except when on purpose. And then there was this person just casually walking into it with a blank no thoughts expression. Also Deer Lord best specimen.
@@adelinaarmstrong9423 it was a horror themed side-quest for my party at about level 8-10, the Deer Lord in my setting was a creation of the Chaotic Evil deity and as such, was unkillable, but the party would’ve ultimately had sealed him away using their mafia connections and the power of capitalism. It… makes more sense in context I promise
Honestly would LOVE a follow up video on this talking about the monsters/dolls from the Kaminari Hospital and Doll Houss DLC respectively, as well as the unknown specimens from the game’s endless mode maybe? Always found the latter mode super interesting in how it incorporates monsters from both of The DLC’s as well as creatures from other horror games.
This game has always been a comforting memory for me that it felt like most people seemed to just completely forget about. I didn't realize how old it was now! So excited to watch this video on it.
My favourite thing about Beef Demon is that its the only one that can just leave the entire mansion at will unlike the others, guy doesn’t care about any containment methods the mansion has for other specimens and i find that funny, I enjoy how it kinda just breaks the rules in its kill method despite it having the second largest kill count behind Taker by not retaining the souls of victims and the nature of its existence. Also i argue the simplicity of its design adds to its unnerving nature. i just find the Specimen pretty neat (ALSO ITS MUSIC IS A BOP)
@@100yrs7 i’m more-so talking about the Cat Dos entry talking about how Beef Demon can just leave whenever he wants, i’m not sure if breaking the fabric of space counts if it can’t let Deer lord leave willy nilly
Yeah, I found PakPak's Chad vs Virgin meme comparison very absurd considering one of the standards given was that Specimen 8 "only kills violent people" and Specimen 11/Food Demon "kills a lot of people to compensate for low self-confidence." It might be because of the visual medium (also PakPak is making a joke) but I would be more afraid of the specimen WITHOUT discernment for its victims. At least, that's how I would measure "Chadness" of an inexplicable horror. Also, depending on one's belief systems, having your soul wiped from existence by Beef Demon could be leagues scarier than being trapped inside the rib cage of a furry god. Although if you're Buddhist that might be close to heaven, to be honest.
@@HeinzBeanz2002 If he can rip throught he fabric of reality itself, traverse *and* exist there (as shown by the death scene) how is that not being able to leave ? He probably just hunts there.
This might just be the best Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion analysis video I've seen so far. From the facts to the humor to the editing, this is the peak. Kudos
@@Spectralanomaly6 it has been confirmed by the creator themselves that that was pure coincidence. The monsters design is based off of gigyas from earthbound
Fun fact, you can mess with the CatDOS a bit to find information on four other specimens (The Dolphin, Mattress Man, Lines, and Paina) that are from other Akins Kira games, and also implies that there are several other specimens the player doesn’t end up encountering.
@@stormy_does_stuff This easter egg was in the game way before endless mode was made, and just checked and none of these secret specimens appear in the game either.
@@ABoyNamedCharlotte after room 900, click modify house layout six times and then open Specimen 9’s entry. From there, you’ll get specimen 9’s boss form and the four secret specimens.
The beef demon slander had me on my toes, but you clarified that he was a sacrificial lamb for your comedy, so I'm willing to let it slide as he does deserve such important roles for his beefdom.
I find it hard to believe the wall of flesh was not inspired by Giygas from Earthbound. Besides the aesthetic similarities, it is said that Giygas was also inspired by a trauma.
That’s probably the case, although the name is quite possibly a reference to terraria which has a boss of the exact same name. Wouldn’t have even thought about the earthbound reference bc I was too blinded by terraria nostalgia😂 but the idea that it’s based on trauma definitely leads a lot of credence to your theory!!
My favorite is still Specimen 12's host. Aside from foreshadowing the ability to turn into a Specimen, I also love how he outclasses you in combat by managing to knock aside your weapon. It really gives you the feeling of his experience in how he was selected as the host due to his sheer combat prowess.
Something I noticed is that all the specimens (besides 1) seem to have gone through or witnessed some sort of tragedy. Gel's note makes him sound like he's in constant pain. Subject 5 is trapped in the facility and constantly hungry. The archetype Ringu's based off of is a woman who's been brutalized and comes back for revenge. Bab's a little mysterious but any theory about her usually points back to her being a punishment for the cult. Ben's puppets were thrown in the river and he subsequently drowned. Wall of Flesh is the physical manifestation of the protagonist's mental health. I never played Lost in Vivo but my guess is that Deer Lord is a protector for deer against humans. The host for Parasite has been forced to give up their free will entirely. Food Demon is a physical manifestation of working in food service, probably. A massacre occurred in the Mansion and the Old Man was possessed by it. The Siren is, "An ancient water dwelling creature believed to be a lost soul who died tragically during the Deluge," according to CAT-DOS. And finally, Taker is a survivor from Unit 731 who was flayed alive. Along with the entire Dollhouse and Karamari Hospital lore, the entire mansion's built off of tragedy. And every death screen has this undertone of giving into suffering or giving into mob mentality, instead of fighting for yourself. By fighting through the mansion, you fought through a bleak world and by escaping during the ending of Dollhouse, it's like you fought to find something to live for, in a way. Or maybe I'm looking way too much into the funny cardboard game.
The Wall of Flesh seems like a reference to Gyiyg to me. The wall being very reminiscent of how it appears in Earthbound, while the cat is more like how it appears in Beginnings.
@@lordofstalebread6020 ‘Giygas’ is just the spelling used in Earthbound. There’s also the spelling ‘Giegue’ which is used in Beginnings. Because there’s no consistency I prefer to use the Japanese spelling ‘Gyiyg’ as it’s the same across both games.
Regarding Specimen 3's disproportionately cool kill sequence: Akuma Kira has said in interviews that the quality of the game's content is mostly dependent on how far into development he made it rather than any active decision to make some parts more stand-out than others. To put into perspective, Specimen 3 was one of the first things added to the game while its kill sequence was one of the most recent, only being added to the game shortly before the release of the Doll House DLC.
wow makes sense I want to be on their team for making the jumpscares cause I got an idea for strawby you wake up in a cell, Strawby watching you. text popping up, "I wasn't pure, You aren't either." before she runs at you and hits you in the head.
The Deer Lord is personally my favorite specimen and always will be. I love everything, from its design, voice, and death screen. It just feels so fitting in this mansion, and I'm so fascinated by the lore behind it. (Also, their chase theme is just an absolute banger in my opinion)
Man, I'm super late to this but it's incredibly interesting to see a relatively fresh perspective on Spooky for someone such as myself, who's been a Spooky veteran since 2014. Awesome video.
It's so weird to see this game again for the first time in years. The last time I played it, it was still called "Spooky's House of Jump Scares", entities were rendered with sprites and not models, hell, I don't even think the game was on Steam at that point! I really need to pick this gem up again and see all the new stuff. Thanks for making me remember Spooky's Mansion!
Ringu was a LOT scarier before the 3d update. She had several sprites/transformations when chasing/attacking and it was overall way better than just her approaching and opening her silly mouth. Great video man, I wasn't very interested in this, but I'm glad I did click it. It was very good, I would wholeheartedly love if you did Karamari Hospital and Dollhouse. Ps. I loved the plushy and I would much rather have that than an immersion-breaking human lol
I think you're thinking of something else. There's two versions of Ringu, the endless version (which can also show up in the dollhouse) is the one that transforms into the one with the multiple arms. Thats the one that covers the screen with static. Its considered a different enemy to specimen 4.
One of the most astonishing things I have ever learned is that Akuma Kira, the creator of this game started out making Garrys Mod maps. That just makes this game 10x better for me
Glad to see this game get some love, nobody ever talks about Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion or "Spooky's House of Jump Scares" anymore, which is a shame cause its one of my favorite Indy horror games of all time, i really hope it gets a sequel someday.
Afterwards, use the pwn hammer to break either crimson altars, or demon altars in order to receive cobalt, palladium, mythril, orichalcum, adamantite, and titanium so you can begin fighting your first hardmode boss
I remember that when this game was still trending I downloaded it from a pirate website, but when I played the game it was only the mansion with NOTHING ELSE inside it, kinda like the backrooms nowadays. There were no cute jumpscares, no nothing so I just wandered around in the empty hallways for minutes and that freaked me out so I deleted it
4:09 That poem is the one of 3 nods to the Resident Evil series which I love. This one specifically is a reference to that one journal you get in RE1 "Itchy Tasty"...
Ringu reminds me of a legend in Japan where if you hear about the legend, then in four weeks you'll be put in an eternal coma where you'll be stuck in a dream world of an abandoned shopping mall with others who fell victim. I can't help but draw connections between the two, I wonder if she was somewhat inspired by multiple things, that legend included
I find the centipede specimen oddly cute and adorable as well, that may just be because I find arthropods in general adorable. I primarily find arachnids and myriapods cute.
Not sure if this was already said but to help you understand how Ben aka specimen 6 works: Teleports behind you if you aren't looking, simple. If you stare at him for about 10 seconds whilst the game considers you as in an idle state (which for some bizarre reason, strafing counts are still being idle), then he teleports behind you to attack.
Spooky's is in my top 10 favourite games of all time, and it's genuinely hard to see any actual discussion around it, which makes me sad because I love it so much. It's such a unique type of horror that I've never seen before or since, and is a massive source of comfort in my life. As a diehard Spooky's stan, thank you for making this :') it was really nice hearing someone else go super in-depth about something I care about so much, and I definitely hope you cover the DLCs at some point! Also THANK YOUUU for giving specimen 13 the credit she deserves, I personally LOVE her and find her section genuinely terrifying so i'm glad to see you disagree with the majority opinion of her being shit. #justiceforspecimen13
Spooky's is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, so it makes me really happy to see a video that really dives into everything it does so well: from the atmosphere, to the comedy, to the between-the-lines storytelling. Very nice work!
I really hope that this video gets viral like your tattle tail video, the amount of effort you put in these videos should be seen by more people honestly
Honestly the period from like 2014-2016 was probably some of the best for gaming in general like EVER. FNAF, this game, Undertale, Tattletail, and so many other amazing titles came out during this period
When I first played this game I was about 15 years old, and the Ringu ghost's death animation terrified me back then. I think it's cause of how unexpected it was. Definitely a hidden gem of a game and a great video.
Ive gotten into Spookys Mansion just recently, and oh my god I dont understand why its not talked about more. It has some major backrooms vibes due to most of the antagonists/cryptids not having a common theme, and each room can have a completely different vibe from one another. The game over poems are my absolute favorite though.
I think ringu’s song sounds more like the modern school bells, the ones that use a tone instead of an actual bell. I think the game is supposed to be vaguely Japanese inspired, which makes sense because in a lot of Japanese media they also use the tone bells. Also fits the theme because if you’re in the hallway during the bell, you’re late for class
45:10 this HAS to be the inspiration for Duskmourne in Magic the Gathering. A demon named Valgavoth was trapped inside a mansion, and couldn’t expand his power beyond the walls of the mansion. His solution? Forcefully expand the walls until the entire plane (basically his own little universe) was the house.
Empty schools are unsettling because they're hubs of activity. It's like the opening scene to 28 Days Later, when Jim is in the abandoned hospital and walks out to the empty streets of London. You just know inherently that "this isn't right."
50:04 While it's been ages since I played (literally when the update for the last batch of rooms came out), I remember Specimen 13 being really boring because she would stop when you got on a crate. Also the rooms were chocked full of crates so you were never really in danger of being caught. It just felt like forced timeout until your stamina regenerated. As far as I remember it didn't have the patrolling pattern you described. Also, having played Amnesia thus having a direct point of comparison, it felt like a poor imitation of the water monster from it. The Amnesia one forced you to stay in water by forcing you to interact with things away from the safety of high ground to progress which the siren lacked.
YOU GET IT!!! this is one of my favorite indie horror games of all time and akuma kira is SO GOOD at what they do. have you played their other titles? would love to see similar videos about those games from someone who appreciates spooky's jumpscare mansion (or spooky's house of jumpscares as we would call it back in the day) as much as i do
Lost in vivo is amazing and the dozen or so smaller games they have are all pretty interesting. It is kind of funny how the game corpse ocean was basically just iron lung before iron lung
8:21 fun fact: my baby sister, used to go to this daycare, but then the woman who ran the daycare quit because she had a “ mini heart attack” which she claimed to be her official diagnosis.
20:49 this part is so true- and it’s still impressive to me that somehow there was at least one creepypasta made from every character in my little pony and I do kinda miss that sort of silly angsty creativity
30:00 WIth how the visuals look, it might actually be partially inspired by Giygas from Earthbound 2. Your interpretation is also vastly different from what I thought it was back when I watched the game fully. I thought the cat was inspired by Kyubey from Puella Madoka and the wall of flesh was actually a vile lingering true form evil behind it. I like your explanation there much more though.
I've been a massive fan of this game ever since it came out (almost 10 years ago now!) and I have to say, I'm so excited that it's getting the recognition it deserves in recent times. I remember every step of the way watching this game be developed with new story beats and new monsters being added every step of the way. It holds a dear place in my heart and will always be one of my favorite games of all time! It also introduced me to the developer's (Akuma Kira) other work, Lost In Vivo, which is also one of my favorite games now!
There’s a sense of relief in the escape that is quickly taken by the drop

goddayum that must've been fucking perplexing, this is why spooky's is goated.
Adding to that, the green slime face changes at a certain room (dunno which one) and gets all bloody and black eyed, and stuff, plus the stress from the other specimens, really can scare the shit out of you
I got terrified of him whenever I wasn’t being chased by anything 😭
There's also ther fact that they become an obstacle when you try to run away if you're not paying attention, so if you get caught on one during a chase you could easily get screwed over

Ah

That explains it

No matter how much it was specified, people would've thought it was an actual enemy.
@@thevenator3955 Haven't really played the game, but I doubt the note was a straight up "Avoid picking up other notes or the tall man will attack you." 19:15 - In Endless mode, you can find notes that are seemingly written by Spooky, and her plans to send messages to "LP people", in hopes of that attracting more LP people, and their "viewers" into her mansion. To Spooky's confusion, her message was stated to be "some sort of canned meat product" (spam).
These notes also talk about Spooky discovering "short horror experiences as well as some sort of Italian cooking" (Creepy pastas)
So yeah, Clearly developer had let's players in mind. (also the addition to humor element)
(Also, these notes reveal a reason behind the name change)
So why did the name get changed?
@Spin overly simplified:
German game studio, named "Spooky House Studios" threatened with legal actions for name/trademark infringement...
Or as the notes put it:
_"a worker from GL Labs brought me distressing news about the title of our house. It seems another house far away already has our title somehow and wants us to change ours. They must have a larger ghost army than ours, so further investigation is required."_
_"Today the worker said with enough funds we can dismiss this title metamorphosis, but I've decided to keep all funds toward dried noodle sustenance and scary things. I'm not sure how this other mansion is going to benefit from this."_
@@atlachanacha that’s a pretty great in-universe reference to real life events

Heyo other dev here, loved the video so much! Def wanna point out some funny / interesting things.
-I've never heard the "Fog Maze" reference to Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time as "Simon Says", interesting.
-In studio, we call Spec 3 our "stupid dog" It's based off Resident Evil
-Spec 4, I still need to fix the flashlight ;__; She's based off games like Corpse Party and the movie Ju-on.
All the specs are getting updates to their 3D models to have more detail, better animations, etc
-Eagerly waiting for the Dollhouse DLC video and see what you think and how you interpret it!

The thing with Specimen 7, and this was pointed out to me before, is that it’s so slow, realistically the only way to die to it is to either be stupid or give up entirely.

Yeah, I found PakPak's Chad vs Virgin meme comparison very absurd considering one of the standards given was that Specimen 8 "only kills violent people" and Specimen 11/Food Demon "kills a lot of people to compensate for low self-confidence." 35:34 Who's idea was it to go to burger King? Specimen 8:"Yours"

Regarding Specimen 3's disproportionately cool kill sequence: Akuma Kira has said in interviews that the quality of the game's content is mostly dependent on how far into development he made it rather than any active decision to make some parts more stand-out than others. To put into perspective, Specimen 3 was one of the first things added to the game while its kill sequence was one of the most recent, only being added to the game shortly before the release of the Doll House DLC.
wow makes sense I want to be on their team for making the jumpscares cause I got an idea for strawby
you wake up in a cell, Strawby watching you.
text popping up, "I wasn't pure, You aren't either."
before she runs at you and hits you in the head.
@@ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYE Damn, this had me shaking, they should DEFO hire you
Huh? I thought it always had that kill sequence
"What you thought was a hot fish babe, was actually a BIRMINGHAM RESIDENT" made me laugh way harder than i should've
46:45 even more importantly, poison gas.
RELEASING NEUROTOXIN❗❗❗❗
Ringu was a LOT scarier before the 3d update. She had several sprites/transformations when chasing/attacking and it was overall way better than just her approaching and opening her silly mouth.
Great video man, I wasn't very interested in this, but I'm glad I did click it. It was very good, I would wholeheartedly love if you did Karamari Hospital and Dollhouse.
Ps. I loved the plushy and I would much rather have that than an immersion-breaking human lol
Yeah, the plushie is cute as hell
I think you're thinking of something else. There's two versions of Ringu, the endless version (which can also show up in the dollhouse) is the one that transforms into the one with the multiple arms. Thats the one that covers the screen with static. Its considered a different enemy to specimen 4.
Silly?
"she drowns you and then reveals that she is british" i genuinely laughed so much at that 😭
One of the most astonishing things I have ever learned is that Akuma Kira, the creator of this game started out making Garrys Mod maps. That just makes this game 10x better for me
10:20 the spider cutout during the spider chase scene was well timed.
Glad to see this game get some love, nobody ever talks about Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion or "Spooky's House of Jump Scares" anymore, which is a shame cause its one of my favorite Indy horror games of all time, i really hope it gets a sequel someday.
Well it does have a DLC so that's probably the closest thing we have to a sequel
It also have a FNF mod 🤓
I don't care about your opinion, chills is one of the best songs ever
@@QuasarXP_ lol this is my first time ever hearing a fnf mod about this, but I'll definitely check it out
I hope so too, but we still haven’t gotten the build your own mansion dlc yet so we finna wait for a while
YAY I LOVE FNF MODS@@QuasarXP_
27:00 use bees, the wall of flesh will be dead in under ten seconds and you can go to hardmode easily
There were no cute jumpscares, no nothing so I just wandered around in the empty hallways for minutes and that freaked me out so I deleted it
Strange, is that a sort of anti piracy measure or something?
@@ochuspin Probably just had the options on that removes all specimens and the "jumpscares" like the cut-outs from the game.
Same, I’m a big fan of bugs
Hooray! Hello fellow lover of many small legs.
Bug lover here! Yeah, it's pretty darn cute
Not sure if this was already said but to help you understand how Ben aka specimen 6 works:
Teleports behind you if you aren't looking, simple. If you stare at him for about 10 seconds whilst the game considers you as in an idle state (which for some bizarre reason, strafing counts are still being idle), then he teleports behind you to attack.
One other thing is that you don't need direct line of sight, you can just look in his general direction even with walls in the way and he won't move.
Yup, essential to juggle him through walls in endless mode when dealing with multiple specimens.
3:51 WHY THAT MUSIC! YOU’VE KILLED ME! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Spookys jumpscare mansion was always too scary for me, though I love that you're doing a deeper video on it, the game is awesome

I love how Specimen 1 has 4 confirmed fatalities, all from people suffering heart attacks.
Implying anything is trying to rip off somthing else, somthing pyrocinical would shamelessly steal almost a year before 36:19
Spooky's is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, so it makes me really happy to see a video that really dives into everything it does so well: from the atmosphere, to the comedy, to the between-the-lines storytelling. Very nice work!
I really hope that this video gets viral like your tattle tail video, the amount of effort you put in these videos should be seen by more people honestly
Doing a pretty good job of it so far
50:13 she was definitely reworked, never used to patrol.
29:37
I would make the doors invisible
Because sometimes when you face your Trauma there seems like there's no escape
Honestly the period from like 2014-2016 was probably some of the best for gaming in general like EVER. FNAF, this game, Undertale, Tattletail, and so many other amazing titles came out during this period
13:47 I'd argue there are more people on earth that find this hot then there are people who find this scary.
5:57 Maybe the true specimen is the friends we made along the way.
49:26 "what you thought was a hot fish babe is actually a Birmingham resident" took me out especially being from Birmingham, you're not even wrong xD
Ringu and her theme actually caused me to lose sleep even back in the original version, both just really messed with my head haha
Great video!
Empty schools are unsettling because they're hubs of activity. It's like the opening scene to 28 Days Later, when Jim is in the abandoned hospital and walks out to the empty streets of London. You just know inherently that "this isn't right."
The Silent Hill area was so well done, it was the first part of the game where I felt like reality was starting to break down.
The story is flawless
Monster terrifying
The twist flawless as always
The humor amazing
The voice lines perfect
Dlcs scratch my brain real good
50:04 While it's been ages since I played (literally when the update for the last batch of rooms came out), I remember Specimen 13 being really boring because she would stop when you got on a crate.
13:49 I'm pretty sure there's even people out there that enjoy that stuff.. uhh
Akuma kira is an incredible horror game dev tbh, he also made lost in vivo which is my favorite horror game
They also made Lunacid, an absolutely bizarre ARPG.
Fun fact: deer lord was basically ringo but slower but then he was buffed and now he's like this.
8:21 fun fact: my baby sister, used to go to this daycare, but then the woman who ran the daycare quit because she had a “ mini heart attack” which she claimed to be her official diagnosis.
real.
20:49 this part is so true- and it’s still impressive to me that somehow there was at least one creepypasta made from every character in my little pony and I do kinda miss that sort of silly angsty creativity
I think the wall would've been super cool if the rooms and hallways were shifting and rotating in real time as you run through them
30:00 WIth how the visuals look, it might actually be partially inspired by Giygas from Earthbound 2.
(If you're wondering about the backstory of Deer God, it's "revealed" in that game!) I'd love to see you cover the two DLCs for the game in the future, but for now, you've earned my subscription. :)
49:29 The funny thing is in Alabama we have a city named Birmingham so whenever you said that I was taking aback because the people that live up there ain't far off from that picture
