One thing I like is just how little lore there is. Its weird to say, but not knowing just what Ao Oni is, makes it scarier. A lot of indie games find themselves making novels of lore, which end up lessening the horror.
Aaron was an unexpected, but *very welcome* addition! Very funny guy and I love his enthusiasm! I like the additional joke comments interspersed with the run-through of the game. And I also like discussing what works or doesn’t work mixed into the summary as well so the video doesn’t feel like a basic summary with only the closing thoughts being analysis. I noticed this is the writing style, but I think you’ve utilized it the best here Also agreed: Oni Cat is the best creature ever

Back then I was into Hetalia and there was a fan version of Ao Oni called Hetaoni. I've seen more Hetalia rpg maker games too, there was also a Danganronpa one. Ahhh Ao Oni was one of the first indie horror games I really heard of. Watched PewDiePie play it back in the day, and I've been interested in the genre of indie horror since then. Cool stuff!
Gotta admit it’s absolutely wild hearing you explain the plot at the beginning and realize how much has been added to the game in post. The game used to be even more stripped down - like I remember there only being four characters and the bully characters weren’t even a thing, it was just friends checking out a spooky house together
really enjoyed Aaron in this, -i checked to see if he had a youtube channel and was shocked he doesn't- it was nice to hear him talk and how he explained things, as well as his avatar which was very creative imo hope to see more of him in future videos, he's a hoot EDIT: Aaron has a channel! fishgaylord7526 in the replies below :-)

Now, that's real horror. Not "indecipherable auto-generated noise", it's about the execution. I love how it goes against the now popular tropes like "main character hides in a closet, the villain peeks inside in a drawn-out and tense scene but then doesn't see them", it's always changing it up. The cell scene, the textbox hide, the fake partymember, all that. There's a charm to that raw but original nature of it. It's creative.

Ngl the one thing I wish they retained was the room to get one of the item with Blob Oni. It's really funny seeing the supposed monster that had almost killed you more than a dozen times be turned into this slow moving blob that mainly just serves as a guard dog to one specific item.
It would have been good if Blob Oni was the only one left in the cage after the others escaped because he’s still trying to catch up
What's strange is, I swear at some point or another ending, you were able to save your friends from the onification (or something like that)
Cont.
I also remember something about them being perverted in some way
@@thatoneyokai5109you sure you not thinking about corpse party?
Positive. I vaugely remember at somepoint within the Ao Oni series where after your friends were turned into one of them (or at least its how I took it when I was a kid.) You were able to save them from being said Ao Oni.@@invertebrado
@@thatoneyokai5109 you’re probably thinking of an Ao Oni fan game! There were a bunch that were fairly popular. You MIGHT be thinking of Nira Oni, that has similar ideas to what you’re talking about, but it’s hard to say with all the different fan versions out there.
@@invertebradoUgh, corspe party..everytime i think of it nowadays i just get sad and a little annoyed
I always loved the Takuro menu jumpscare
that actually caught me off guard first time around, hell i didnt even realize the oni shapeshifted as i legit thought he escaped. yeah i was dumb back then.

😂 I love how the stats don't change, it still refers to this big purple demon as highschooler with 1hp.
Man what a throwback. I thought I was going mad misremembering some sequences; I didn't realise there were multiple versions! Drove me insane wondering where the old character art went and not seeing people talk about it. Fun video! Thanks for your time, hope you're doing well.
I always thought that the oni was just a fucked up photoshopped picture of yanderedev
One thing I like is just how little lore there is. Its weird to say, but not knowing just what Ao Oni is, makes it scarier. A lot of indie games find themselves making novels of lore, which end up lessening the horror.
Completely agree
I honestly feel that this would be a small price to pay if the lore is interesting.
@@puppymaroon964Most of the time it isn't
Aaron was an unexpected, but *very welcome* addition! Very funny guy and I love his enthusiasm! I like the additional joke comments interspersed with the run-through of the game.
And I also like discussing what works or doesn’t work mixed into the summary as well so the video doesn’t feel like a basic summary with only the closing thoughts being analysis. I noticed this is the writing style, but I think you’ve utilized it the best here
Also agreed: Oni Cat is the best creature ever
@fishgaylord I didn't mean this as an insult, but I have a hard time understanding your speech in this video because of your accent/mic quality (even TH-cam's auto CC doesn't catch it well). Thankfully, Ben provided subtitles in the Let's Play parts.

This is actually a really interesting way to look at the history of a game. Would now like to see something on mad father as that's just something i remember being my fav rpg maker horror game.
27:14 fun fact! Every map can be colored so that no regions of the same color touch (excluding corners) with at most four colors. It took like a million pages of math and nerd shit and a big computer to prove that
My god this game is so nostalgic. It was such a big hit in korea that every youtuber / streamer did a lets play at least once
definitely did not expect to find a daybreak fan artist on youtube today
I'm most familiar with the final version, but the other ones have their charms. I particularly like the one with multiple endings where you can choose to save or abandon your friends.
32:21 I started the video rolling my eyes hearing its a collab but honestly you guys are hilarious together and its quire wholesome
Back then I was into Hetalia and there was a fan version of Ao Oni called Hetaoni. I've seen more Hetalia rpg maker games too, there was also a Danganronpa one. I would love for you to check that one out because they did change some stuff and the story was way crazier and more emotional, when I played Ao Oni afterwards I actually liked Hetaoni more than that.
hetalia rpg maker games was a whole phase in my life and honestly i miss it.

Gotta be honest, I can't believe this channel exists, literally a channel where all the nostalgic and fascinating horror typa games are talked about!
About to binge alot of your videos

Tbh I do think the doll puzzle is genius
I honestly love it when puzzles look so complicated and complex …. Only for them to have a very simple solution
Signalis actually did this with quite a bit of the puzzles and it got me every time
I recently learned of this game so I feel like I can actually appreciate this going into it. I always enjoy your commentary/ takes on things, and I especially enjoy when I have the chance to learn something new about a game I've already been aquatinted with. Thanks for always going the extra mile
i love the ben cinematic universe going on please show your friends more often they’re funny af

Ahhh Ao Oni was one of the first indie horror games I really heard of. Watched PewDiePie play it back in the day, and I've been interested in the genre of indie horror since then. Cool stuff!
26:53 Bro this caught me so off guard , I was not expect the Oni to just sonic speed inside 😂

Gotta admit it’s absolutely wild hearing you explain the plot at the beginning and realize how much has been added to the game in post. The game used to be even more stripped down - like I remember there only being four characters and the bully characters weren’t even a thing, it was just friends checking out a spooky house together
Did you finish the video?
really enjoyed Aaron in this, -i checked to see if he had a youtube channel and was shocked he doesn't- it was nice to hear him talk and how he explained things, as well as his avatar which was very creative imo
hope to see more of him in future videos, he's a hoot

@@amirwheeler2842nah bro busted😭
He was far too excited to see the ao...... oni
I felt uncomfortable when he said that
Now, that's real horror.
AAAA YOUR BACKGROUND MUSIC IS HOTEL DUSK OST!!! LOVE IT!!! SO GLAD MORE PEOPLE ARE USING THIS BECAUSE I ODDLY HEARING A LOT OF IT NOW!!!
How come I'm just now finding your channel? Your content is so good!
Keep up the good work king. You're making great videos here.
My favorite adaptation of the Ao Oni story has to be Nira Oni, where it's set inside of an abandoned Hospital instead of a giant mansion.
Oh cool, another person who knows about Nirai Oni! Easily the best Ao Oni game in my opinion.
Yea, i was shocked when I discovered that it wasn't the canon sequel
32:15, I tought Ben was going to shoot him before he could finish the sentence.
G: Only TF2 fans would understand the reference.
Great video! I personally consider the jump scare with the Takuro Oni to be the best jump scare of all time. It really got me!
21:54 I would've been too scared to leave the closet too 😅
The oni appearing behind the textbox has got to be one of the most hilarious moments in an rpg maker horror game.
Holy shit what a time capsule! I used to be really into whatever amount of lore the game had. Plus, finding a room of wonky purple dudes moving unnaturally is still kinda scary.
Re: Kinder always makes me cry.
Not just because of how tragic the game was at points, but because of what happened to the game creator IRL after how that game ended. If only the world were kinder...
