- You've got to feel sorry for this guy. First he hits the wall and then he breaks the tailshaft. But it has some power, watch it twist up off the line.
Sorry guys, I finally got around to fixing the aspect ratio on this video. Now you can watch it how it was meant to be seen. :)
I can't believe so many have watched this.
That suspension setup is amazing
Hahaha looks someone spent all his money under the hood and left the stock suspension on!
Jacob O'Brien that’s the point with these vl turbos
@@theautofromhell6529 more sag in the rear the less wheel spin. Drag racing 101, guy from 8 years ago.
Jeez there's some haters on here. The guy got a crappy Australian car with a great Japanese engine, probably built the thing in his shed at home on a shoestring budget, and went racing. Massive props for that. At least he's having a go. With racing it's the mistakes you make and learn from that make you a better driver, builder, and racer. Keep it up dude.
Stephen Turner Japanese engine in a Aussie car, There's the problem right there end of story
Stephen Turner this doesnt look like a shoestring budget to me mate
Definitely a no budget car, I've seen it before and these guys worked on my VL Calais over 10 years ago

Its a ford motor in a holden
More like hectic Habib has a bad day at the track😂
Definitely a habib driving it
WTF , did you put landcruiser springs in that thing. Looks like a monster truck
Needs to be higher, it handles too well
That thing goes down the track like a car that's been written off and then cut n shut back together with random junk yard parts. Engine's strong though.
I used to have one of these, and I can remember it feeling more like a boat than a car
@ me installing nitrous on my Camaro !
@rioross
Nissan RB series 3-litre straight six is the standard motor, but they did also have the factory turbocharged option. It was pretty much the quickest thing around (in Australia) when it was released. They are the Buick Grand National of Australia. :)
I love that pause and the 'holy mother of god'. Gets me all the time.
@elementalfunk It's quiet because it's a turbo car. It's twisting because it's got plenty of power but probably very little money spent on suspension set-up.
@phatgtx yes the rb30 in the VL commodore did come out with factory turbo model, the rb30 in the skyline did not have a factory turbo.
The Turbo - the drive train - all going to be comprehensively buggered by the end of the day..
The wildest dragster I ever seen --- no traction , and broken suspension and still 12 sec !! Thats a hell of a driver. Those stupid coments are from people with no fantasy - bored kids ... one even like to watch Hondas - man ! I don't feel sorry for him - sometimes shit happends - but respect for using this as a dragster :-)) A lot of work to make it better...
gotta love all the heros in here having a go without knowing anything. Car went mid 10s in the 140mph that day. Car has now run 9.20 @ 108mph (broke gearbox shifting into top)
quite amazing how much went wrong with the car in one day
@JLangevin
Not really sure, he wasn't a particularly big guy, I can only assume that the springs are just sagged from years of having just a driver in the car.
Nice 8° bank angle!
everyones quick to act like a keyboard hero, this is actually i very well known vl in Melbourne and built and been to some of the best shops down here he's just had a bad day and put the wrong springs in for the track, this thing is weapon! and looks amazing in person
Hectic Habib strikes again with his “mad boost”. 😂
I'd say there was either something broken in the suspension or too low of a spring rate on the right rear. Maybe broken shock absorber mount. Did you wind up finding the problem?
You can see the car is leaning to one side & bouncing going down the track. So much for safety 1st. If something doesn't look right stop & inspect & avoid an accident.
imagine how fast it would be with the right suspension... that would fix that walking burnout thing too....
@texturedmuffin
No half shafts on a VL Commodore, they're a live axle rear end. Of course he could have broken an axle but I think that would have been very apparent if it had happened. It certainly wouldn't have launched the way it did.
bounces like its got hydraulics at the end of the track everytime.
@blownhemi One other thing... why is the car leaning so far to the right at rest? He the suspension dialed in and preloaded or something?
i remember this car from danny's shop i was way too busy drooling over pannic an platnm fuck they were some nice cars
I know FA about settung up a car for the drags, but that thing has a shite load of torque... shouldnt the rear right be stiffened to compensate for that?
XCHSER and PANNIC we're two beasts, always at Bell ST maccas back in a day
Ah, good on him for having a go, but god damn thats funny.
Concerning the gear: NO!
Concerning the angle: YES!
Ah well, at least he kept rolling right down the middle of his lane when the car broke!!!
Have to give the guy credit....he doesnt quit
holy compressor surge, Amongst other fails. Good video, I needed a laugh.
considering how quiet it is, the power is insane
what engine usually comes in these cars?
Obviously the turbocharger isnt a stock unit, but engine is it attached to?
@xXxDANMANxXx Turbo chargers can have a muffling effect. He's also likely running a muffler on top of that.
@scwolf81 How do you know that the sheetmetal used by Holdens was not up to standard?....I worked there for 10 yrs at the Elizabeth plant in the body shop where the shells were assembled,and know for a fact that this is not the case...yes,they had design faults,as do many other cars out there,but using substandard materials was not one of them
@donkeykong8u thats great champ, but why does he not belong on the track? Gotta start somewhere.
@JLangevin
Many Commodore owners don't run one because of the factory two piece tailshaft set-up. It keeps the front half short enough that it doesn't dig in.
Not making excuses for anyone but that's what most Commodore owners believe
I love the BOV hahaha this thing is a mean machine though :D
Sounds goooooooood!
2 questions: why is it so quiet? and why is it twisting, i dont see how torque could do that when the diff is splitting it up?
holy shit!!! he got some nerves to race with that kind of suspension...
I love cars like this. Nothing really to look at but all the good stuff is under the bonnet. Looks to me like this is a work in progress so don't slate it for the bits that still need doing. In any case, the car is leaning like that because of the huge torque the engine has, the soft suspension and the big tyres. If the owner was to give it a stiffer setup then the engine would be able to transfer more power through the wheels instead of wasting it through moving the suspension. Nice runs.
Looks like he put a set of super duper high king springs
awesome video, huge torque trying to put the fucker on its roof!! dont change anything (apart from the prop shaft!!) dancing down the quarter!! good on yer cobber!
@XxAtomic646xX
I didn't say it LOOKED like a GNX, only that it was like a Buick GN in that it's a Turbo Six and it was one of the quickest cars in Australia the year it was released.
@antmandcm to much power for a manual ??what planet are you from? depending on his turbo size and everything hes probably better off with a manual
@DeanosAAAA I was thinking the same thing watching it. Going fast is more than just sheer horsepower.....doing something about that suspension alone will improve his time.
Once it's fixed of course.
A stock "Le Car" might have done as well?
well gotta give the guy credit as he made effort building a car and taking it to the track.
looks like from that hit in the wall he decided to break the whole damn car haha
@hemiwarlord
Which Centura was that, I usually remember such things. That's right, this was the Chrysler Drag day wasn't it?
Yeah, that body flex should never have happened. He really need to fix that suspension. The car dropped a nut.
The problem here is the suspension and the driver!
You couldn't have said it better!.
I'm gonna have to agree to this tbh lol
@blownhemi id like to add to that...i think a very weak frame and or unibody...needs tubed chassis and like you say suspension is very important
Still got the original fitted shocks and springs I see...
That's cuttin the wind Son!!!!!!!
that was my thought. The weight in the drivers seats keeps him from staying in a straight line!
@texturedmuffin
Actually, you got that back to front. We (Australia) are right-hand-drive, you guys in the US are left-hand-drive.
oh shit that's funny a bad day in the track... loved it!!!!!!
@1UPONTO
Sounds familiar, NSW or Victorian car?
1:01 and that, my friends, is the effects of high amounts of torque
Fastest taxi I've seen in quite a while
I mean is that normal where they are, just smash the wall and they use the damn leaf blower to blow the bumper fender and broke headlight off the track and he just backs up and drops it in drive again at 6000 rpm????
I don't gotta feel sorry for this guy. If he is too stupid to put all that power into the engine and not get everything else to cope, why would feel sorry for him.
I'm just glad he didn't smash into any of those nice Valiants :D
That thing looks like it'd be an unstable daily, I wouldn't sit next to him at a stoplight, much less racing. Scary.
Maybe if he had like, the same shocks on the left and right....
lol the car was tilted to the right since first run, amazed that it drove straight
That's at Heathcote Park right?
has this guy never heard of suspension preload? Air shocks maybe? the car's not supposed to point at the wall when you launch.
Hello there, drive shaft. Ow... look what these people have done to your brother.
R.I.P. Differential
i think the diferential is messed up... the torque goes only one one weel and therefore the bad suspesion effect......
that was very entertaining, great vid, poor bloke and poor VL. ha.
have you ever thought of lowering it? Would do it justice in some ways.
Yep, that is indeed a Holden car....
Serious suspension set up issues there haha.
Damn, someone fix that suspension setup!
That thing is never gunna track straight.
where did you find this car at the junkyard?
To much power for the car to handle haha
im gonna ask one question. why does the car lift its front left side when floored down?
wouldnt it lift the same height both sides? or maybe is the rear right side that is getting lower, but could you explain that ?
its the torque from the engine twisting the car that direction
ok thx
Because the driver is weighing down the right side
just mean or did everyone lean their head while watching the yellow car?
Was that the drive shaft?
i was tilting me head slightly when watching this lol
That car should have not made it past stage. Not safe
obviously some frame reinforcement needed or sub frame connectors. its probably too late though lol
On the first launch surely you noticed it feeling different - not normal...
Did you even check the diff and all the suspension? There is no doubt it is a quick machine, but with all that torque something has to give. You don't know when something is wrong until it breaks then you fix it stronger than it was before.
Cheers
That thing floats like a boat :P
love it mate. she's a keeper for sure, new tail shaft in oder tho bad luck.
Too much weight on that one side!!!How much boost is there????
What's he using for springs balloons?
@blownhemi Well I guess that makes sense. i personally would think it would just be extra piece of mind given how cheap they are. It makes sense to me now why it seemed to be so short. Thanks for the reply! (Thumbs up)
@audiavantveesix: did u read what i just wrote? the reason he kept going that day is becuase it's 3 hours from home, and he enjoys it.
CAR HAS NOW GONE 9.20@108 MPH, BROKE GEARBOX SHIFTING INTO TOP (POWERGLIDE), WILL BE IN THE 8's SHORTLY
respect to the driver able to run 12 seconds in a car specially modified to kill the driver
You have to give credit when it's due. At least he's having a go unlike many people i know who are too scared that the mythical power and times they have talked up to their mates will be found to be a lie.
But really, that car shouldn't be allowed on the track. It sits crooked, it doesn't track straight, and worst of all, it's mechanically weak.
Have to be positive though, a few weekends and the right parts and it could be a really nice street car. 2 more cylinders might help too.
This car gives off black air force energy
lol, laughed so loud my neighbors heard me
he broke the suspension on the first launch... and hate the sound of turbo's .This video is proof of that
Damn, he's got to be nuts to drive the car with bad suspension like that. Must of blown his budget & didn't get to it.
Looks as if he broke the driver's side rear half-shaft on that first launch... after watching the 2nd launch crash and how much sideways action he was getting and then the tons of torque that appear to make the drivers side rise up like the dodge charger from the movie F.A.T.F. anyone else get the "broken axle vibe" from this?
this is funniest bad lack I've ever seen :D
forgot to say, held the manual vl turbo record too until WHONXT took it years later
