    Battery degradation is negligible where a decent battery temperature control system is fitted. The reason the Leaf battery degradation is around 3% per year on the older cars is simply because they have no battery temperature controls.

    Good to see that the MG is holding it battery. We have a 2017 Ioniq 28kWh and have just passed 100,000km and it's now 5 and a half years old, and according to EVNotify and also the range we are getting when full, we don't have any degradation of the usable battery. Looking at the information in EVNotify it also looks as though we have only used half of the hidden 10% of the battery, so we could assume, if the degradation doens't speed up, that we could get another 100,000km and 5 and a half years of driving before the degradation starts to impact the range.

Would be interested to know if youve seen much of an improvement in the charging Network since you where in Thailand last and what new EV models are available. I recall watching videos from your last trip and you showed that Imported EVs had a very high tax on them, so has this changed at all? Thank you and look forward to next video.

    A very informative video and would be awesome to see a range test on Model 3 LFP cars after 25k km. I had an MG and sold it at 10k kms and the range was still intact at 262kms after driving for that period which indicates there is a hidden buffer. Now I have switched to Tesla and find the battery efficiency on Tesla is unmatched. I am getting 11.6kwh/100 kms and in MG the best ever was 14kwh. I am from NZ and it's currently summer here. Look forward to seeing more great content from Thailand.

    Pretty decent. It’s definitely the TOP buffer you said.
    If MG had software read out of SOH of battery it would be a quicker way to find out degradation tbh.
    Start at like 110% SOH so you get extra 10% buffer

  • @jpdj2715
    @jpdj2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    (Introduction) In solid state memory (like SSD and flash memory cards), each memory cell rewrite is a bit of brown-out - plainly called "wear", elegantly called "degradation". The extent to which this happens is highly determinant of price (next to mainly speed and available to the user capacity).
    Manufacturers publish memory life time in "TBW" as this indicates how many times a cell can be rewritten and the firmware in the cards does a "wear leveling" process. How do we get cards that last longer? (A) with better and much more expensive memory cells or (B) through "over provisioning". In over provisioning, you may have 50% more capacity than visible to you and it is used in the wear leveling process. This could be done with cheap memory cell tech to get better TBW or with expensive cell tech to get enterprise or data center class SSD.
    (Question) Is it possible that the battery bank in the ZS EV is configured/sold with a level of over-provisioning of battery cells that are used in a wear leveling process? As the battery is the most expensive part of the car (assumption) this would be reflected in the price somehow, but as the car is a complex package that would be hard to identify.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Possible, but I find it very unlikely...

    • @CampGareth
      @CampGareth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wear levelling doesn't really apply to a battery pack, individual cells don't see differing loads and the wiring to be able to swap a cell for any other cell would be really complex.
      In SSD terms imagine the only way to use a drive is to write to every cell simultaneously. All cells see the same load. Some are weaker than others and will fail earlier, but we only have e.g. 10 of them and we need to expose all that capacity to the user. Some cars will overprovision so you have 12 cells of capacity but only expose 10 to the user, even then all 12 cells are in use and each cell sees 10/12 of a full load cycle extending its life, especially as that final little bit really damages the cell.

    I'd guess that it's more of a top buffer being eaten away if it charges slower towards the end, but if it charges the same it's most likely a bottom buffer.

    Does colder vs warmer climate affect degradation? MG ZS EV Thailand vs Norway.

    • @steilkurbler4973
      @steilkurbler4973 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I learned from LiPo cells in RC planes is that they like to be stored in colder enviroment, but like to be used at around 15-20°C. Storing them colder supposedly slows the degradation that happens over time(the one which happens without use). But I am not sure, if it transfers over to EVs batteries, because they are Li-Ion, so a bit different chemistry.
      I'd say something with Climate like Germany or even UK would be best for battery thermals. Not too hot, not too cold. But I am no expert after all.

    I only charge it to 100% when going on a road trip.

    I wonder if there is actual battery state of health report from OBD2 or not.

  • @Porkonfork
    @Porkonfork 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seeing the same in Aus, State of Charge 94% (unchanged since new) and State of Health down from 100% to 97.1% after 23k km. I think MG are hiding the degradation in the 6% (2.64 KwH) fenced off in the battery pack.
